Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Introduction: Cerebral malaria is one of the most severe manifestations of malaria and is a leading cause of acquired neurodisability in African children. Recent studies suggest acute kidney injury (AKI) is a risk factor for brain injury in cerebral malaria. The present study evaluates potential mechanisms of brain injury in cerebral malaria by evaluating changes in cerebrospinal fluid measures of brain injury with respect to severe malaria complications. Specifically, we attempt to delineate mechanisms of injury focusing on blood-brain-barrier integrity and acute metabolic changes that may underlie kidney-brain crosstalk in severe malaria.

Methods: We evaluated 30 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers …

Novel Pathways To Tailor Charge And Spin In Materials And Investigating The Impact On Sensing And Electrochemical Energy Applications, Aruna Narayanan Nair

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Catalysis is integral to our daily lives, as it streamlines and accelerates numerous chemical reactions essential for producing various materials, fuels, and chemicals. With the rising demand for clean, sustainable energy sources, optimizing catalytic materials and processes becomes increasingly vital. In the realm of renewable energy production, catalysis is crucial for efficiently converting energy from sustainable resources, such as solar, wind, and biomass, into chemical energy stored in fuels or directly into electrical energy. The electronic charge distribution in materials significantly influences their physical and chemical properties, facilitating the development of advanced electronic, optoelectronic, sensing, and energy conversion devices. Since catalysis …

Mental Health Resources For Low Income Individuals, Jasmine G. Marin May 2023

Mental Health Resources For Low Income Individuals, Jasmine G. Marin

Whittier Scholars Program

There are many barriers that low income individuals and populations face in accessing mental healthcare, including lack of health insurance that makes it hard to afford care, distance from clinics especially for people who live rurally, lack of transportation, inability to take time off work, and the stigma of mental illness coupled with poverty. Systemic racism in medical settings also plays a significant role in low income minority groups’ lack of access to quality care, as doctors prioritize those with insurance. Unfortunately, poverty itself can cause major stressors which puts families at higher risk for mental illness and substance abuse, …

Implementation Of A Standardized Universal Protocol Process At A Large Academic Medical Center, Lisa Ann Heard May 2023

Implementation Of A Standardized Universal Protocol Process At A Large Academic Medical Center, Lisa Ann Heard

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Decreasing the risk of wrong site, wrong procedure and wrong patient surgery is an essential healthcare safety initiative. The Joint Commission’s Universal Protocol along with the World Health Organization (WHO) Safe Surgery Checklist were designed to aid in this patient safety effort and have been implemented in hospitals worldwide.

Local Problem: Perioperative and procedural areas at the project hospital areas have adopted the Universal Protocol and Safe Surgery Checklist. Despite agreement in their importance, there is a lack of uniform application of all components. This leads to variation in practice which may impact team compliance with the protocol and …

Superfluous Judicial Activism: The Takings Gloss, Michael Allan Wolf May 2023

Superfluous Judicial Activism: The Takings Gloss, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

In the summer of 2021, the Supreme Court released opinions in three Takings Clause cases. The Justices did not focus primarily on the dozen words that compose that Clause. Instead, the Court considered the expansive judicial gloss on those words, the extratextual aspects established by takings opinions over the last 100 years, since the “too far” test introduced by Justice Holmes in Pennsylvania Coal. The “Takings Gloss” is the product of holdings expanding the meaning and reach of the Takings Clause, a tangled web of opinions that have troubled lawyers, judges, and commentators for several decades. With the latest contributions, …

Intrinsic Tame Filling Functions And Other Refinements Of Diameter Functions, Andrew Quaisley May 2023

Intrinsic Tame Filling Functions And Other Refinements Of Diameter Functions, Andrew Quaisley

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tame filling functions are quasi-isometry invariants that are refinements of the diameter function of a group. Although tame filling functions were defined in part to provide a proper refinement of the diameter function, we show that every finite presentation of a group has an intrinsic tame filling function that is equivalent to its intrinsic diameter function. We then introduce some alternative filling functions—based on concepts similar to those used to define intrinsic tame filling functions—that are potential proper refinements of the intrinsic diameter function.
