The Literary Language Of Privacy—How Judges' Use Of Literature Reveals Images Of Privacy In The Law, Elizabeth De Armond
The Literary Language Of Privacy—How Judges' Use Of Literature Reveals Images Of Privacy In The Law, Elizabeth De Armond
Georgia State University Law Review
George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. When we think of literary works and privacy, that is the first book that comes to mind, and the same is true for judges penning privacy law opinions too. Although the novel is notable for expressing fears of authoritarian overreach, other literary works offer judges a tool for describing the plights of parties before them—parties who seek to vindicate breaches of privacy in many different forms. Nineteen Eighty-Four particularly suits cases that challenge government surveillance or non-governmental wiretapping. References to Franz Kafka and Joseph Heller illuminate other privacy harms, such as unease with governmental collection, …
High Time To Revisit Federal Drug Sentencing: The Confusing Interplay Between Controlled Substances And Career Offender Sentence Enhancements, Carly Knight
Georgia State University Law Review
The 1970s in the United States were largely defined by wars, both foreign and domestic: the Vietnam War and the War on Drugs, respectively. As part of President Richard Nixon’s anti-drug offensive, Congress enacted the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), part of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970. The CSA organized—and criminalized—various drugs into schedules based on their permissible uses and potential for abuse. As states enacted their own versions of the CSA, some states chose to criminalize additional substances that were not included in the CSA.
The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 and the United States …
Targeted Sanction Effects, Nour Alhajjeh
Targeted Sanction Effects, Nour Alhajjeh
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This paper provides an analysis of sanctions effects by examining different cases where sanctions were implanted in countries such as Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Cuba. These sanctions have raised various issues that caused a lack of resources, migration, a raise in the death toll, inflation, and a decrease in the GDP of the countries in which they were applied by the United States and the United Nations. The main question is whether broad sanctions had effective outcomes for those stated countries and how can targeted sanctions be better or bring out similar results.
Trace Dna Detection Using Diamond Dye: A Recovery Technique To Yield More Dna, Leah Davis
Trace Dna Detection Using Diamond Dye: A Recovery Technique To Yield More Dna, Leah Davis
Master's Theses
This study aspires to find a new screening approach to trace DNA recovery techniques to yield a higher quantity of trace DNA from larger items of evidence. It takes the path of visualizing trace DNA on items of evidence with potential DNA so analysts can swab a more localized area rather than attempting to recover trace DNA through the general swabbing technique currently used for trace DNA recovery. The first and second parts consisted of observing trace DNA interaction with Diamond Dye on porous and non-porous surfaces.
The third part involved applying the Diamond Dye solution by spraying it onto …
An Adaptive Digital Predistortion Process Consisting Of An Fir Filter And Lms Algorithm For Use In Rf Power Amplifier Linearization, Alexander R. Vita
An Adaptive Digital Predistortion Process Consisting Of An Fir Filter And Lms Algorithm For Use In Rf Power Amplifier Linearization, Alexander R. Vita
Master's Theses
Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifiers (PA) are fundamentally non-linear due to their design and environmental effects, this non-linearity reduces performance and introduces distortion to the system. To improve the linear region of operation an adaptive Digital Predistortion Process (DPD) is used consisting of an adaptive Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter utilizing the Least Means Square (LMS) algorithm. Unlike other DPD processes this one is adaptive in nature and requires no calibration allowing the digital pre-distorter to keep up with the dynamic changes in the PA non-linearity. The performance of this process is evaluated on the ability to increase the linearity …
What Are You Crying For?: Renegotiating White Masculine Hegemony Through Melodramatic Excess In The 1990s Films Of Tom Hanks, Bryce Thompson
What Are You Crying For?: Renegotiating White Masculine Hegemony Through Melodramatic Excess In The 1990s Films Of Tom Hanks, Bryce Thompson
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
This thesis studies the emergence of a renegotiated masculinity in the 1990s predicated on the expression and containment of anxieties around White masculinity and an appropriation of the melodramatic mode. By establishing a historical and theoretical foundation from which to understand and analyze this unique cultural moment, this thesis demonstrates how such a renegotiation acted in tandem with a larger reactionary project. This foundation includes a critical review of the “crisis of masculinity” of the 1990s defined in Sally Robinson’s (2000) work; an engagement with the nature, reproduction, and self-preservation of hegemony, as explored through traditional theorists like Raymond Williams …
The Rape-Revenge Genre In The Digital Age Of Heightened Visibility: The Rise Of Female Storytellers And Fourth-Wave Feminism, Marynell Dethero
The Rape-Revenge Genre In The Digital Age Of Heightened Visibility: The Rise Of Female Storytellers And Fourth-Wave Feminism, Marynell Dethero
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
The rape-revenge cinema genre has continued to evolve since its initial emergence in the 1970s. Many of the most popular films belonging to the genre produced in the 1970s, like Meir Zarchi’s I Spit on Your Grave (1978) or Wes Craven’s directorial debut The Last House on the Left (1972), have been criticized heavily by film critics and scholars for their exploitative tropes. However, I argue that regardless of the production value of the films, the rape-revenge genre is inherently feminist because sexual violence is and always has been an inherent issue to the feminist movement and because the genre …
Balancing Multiple Worlds: The Multiverse And The Fractured Asian American Experience In Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022), Austin Kang
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
This thesis examines the ways in which the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) employs the philosophical ideas concomitant with the multiverse hypothesis in order to narrate an emotionally poignant, yet somewhat typical story about a multi-generational Asian American family. This thesis argues that the film uses its characters as vehicles to not only illustrate the multilayered nature of Asian American realities through the allegory of “auto verse-jumping” across the multiverse, but also to philosophically contemplate and respond to the existence of the multiverse via its presentation of conceptual parallels. The film employs the hypothetical existence of the …
The Disintegration Of Marriage In Ryusuke Hamaguchi’S Happy Hour (2015), Afra Nariman
The Disintegration Of Marriage In Ryusuke Hamaguchi’S Happy Hour (2015), Afra Nariman
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
By using Happy Hour as a case study, this thesis argues Ryusuke Hamaguchi's approach to the Japanese home drama genre presents a changing perspective on the institution of marriage in contemporary Japanese society, reflecting shifts in gender roles and the growing trend of singlehood amongst Japanese youth. This perspective contrasts with the values portrayed in Ozu's films, which emphasize the vitality of marriage and the necessity of forming a family for happiness. The thesis analyzes the thematic and narrative elements of Happy Hour, focusing on the portrayal of marriage as a source of alienation and loneliness. It also discusses the …
Desire For Transformation: The Actualization Of Self-Identity Through Change In The Films Raw And Titane, Owen Bradford
Desire For Transformation: The Actualization Of Self-Identity Through Change In The Films Raw And Titane, Owen Bradford
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
The aim of this thesis is to illustrate a distinction between the films of The New French Extreme and Ducournau’s Raw and Titane, in their handling of gender and identity, primarily in regard to how these films handle transformation and self-identification. Ducournau explores themes of cannibalism, the linking of desire and violence, and transformation in order to disrupt hegemonic conceptions of sex and gender binaries. the disruptions to these binaries are initially perceived as monstrous, due to the implementation of genre conventions, they play on perception of the monstrous feminine, to reveal cultural perceptions that these transgressions are dangerous, …
Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants: A Study Of Burnout And Quality Of Life, Lori Light
Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants: A Study Of Burnout And Quality Of Life, Lori Light
University Honors Program Senior Projects
This study examines whether flight attendant lifestyles, including commutes, relationships, home life, and seniority, are associated with burnout levels, quality of life, and difficulty detaching from work during time off. Participants were collected through a private Facebook page for Southwest Airlines flight attendants, and responded from varying locations, seniority groups, and demographic categories. It was hypothesized that being employed during the pandemic would indicate higher burnout levels, regardless of whether participants opted to fly during that time. In addition, we proposed that commuting flight attendants that travel to their base by airplane have a lower quality of life and psychological …
The Effects Of Circadian Rhythm Disruption On The Behavior, Lifespan, And Fertility In Drosophila Melanogaster, Isaiah Thomas
The Effects Of Circadian Rhythm Disruption On The Behavior, Lifespan, And Fertility In Drosophila Melanogaster, Isaiah Thomas
University Honors Program Senior Projects
Circadian disruptions can have adverse behavioral and/or physiological effects on organisms, impacting their overall health and reproductive fitness. The circadian biology of Drosophila melanogaster was disrupted through exposure to excessive nighttime light. Locomotor, lifespan, and fecundity/fertility assays were used to quantify the negative effects of artificial-light-at-night (ALAN) in Oregon-R and w1118 wildtype flies. Control flies were kept in a 12:12 hr. light-dark cycle (LD) while the experimental flies were kept in a 12:12 hr. light-dim-light cycle (LDim) of 4 lux to mimic exposure to ALAN, a form of photopollution. The data showed significant behavioral differences in the active-rest phases of …

Factors Impacting The Mental Health Stigma In The African American Community With A Focus On African American Males, Juniel Figures
Factors Impacting The Mental Health Stigma In The African American Community With A Focus On African American Males, Juniel Figures
Undergraduate Honors Theses
There have been numerous studies done on various topics involving mental health with different populations, for mental health plays such a significant role in everyone's lives. Mental health essentially drives how individuals think, feel, and act. However, mental health tends to be overlooked with minority populations, thus causing the number of studies done on minority populations to be so little. This study will focus solely on the African American community, for the African American community experiences this mental health stigma that is not seen so often with the White population due to certain factors. Males also experience higher levels of …

The Full Degree Spanning Tree Problem, Sarah Acquaviva
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Given a graph G, we study the problem of finding a spanning tree T that maximizes the number of vertices of full degree; that is, the number of vertices whose degree in T equals its degree in G. We prove a few general bounds and then analyze this parameter on various classes of graphs including grid graphs, hypercubes, and random regular graphs. We also explore a related problem that focuses on maximizing the number of leaves in a spanning tree of a graph.

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Reactions between Rongalite (Na+O-SOCH2OH) and epoxides were studied with the aim of developing new synthetic routes for the procurement of sulfone diols. This class of compounds contains essential building blocks in the construction of sulfur heterocycles, which have been implied in the development of several medicinal compounds. Thus far, the desired diols have not been isolated. During control experiments with bromo alcohols, an unknown product was isolated but remains to be identified.
Dynamics Of Inertial And Non-Inertial Particles In Geophysical Flows, Nishanta Baral
Dynamics Of Inertial And Non-Inertial Particles In Geophysical Flows, Nishanta Baral
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
We consider the dynamics of inertial and non-inertial particles in various flows. We investigate the underlying structures of the flow field by examining their Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS), which are found by computing finitetime Lyapunov exponents (FTLE). We compare the behavior of massless noninertial particles using the velocity fields from four models, the Duffing oscillator, the Bickley jet, the double-gyre flow, and a quasi-geostrophic geophysical flow model, with that of inertial particles. For inertial particles with finite size and mass, we use the Maxey-Riley equation to describe the particle’s motion. We explore the preferential aggregation of inertial particles and demonstrate …
Environmental Drivers Of Stress In Red Pandas (Ailurus Fulgens) : Behavior And Space Use Changes In Response To Redesigned Naturalistic Enclosures, Alexis Michelle Lawson
Environmental Drivers Of Stress In Red Pandas (Ailurus Fulgens) : Behavior And Space Use Changes In Response To Redesigned Naturalistic Enclosures, Alexis Michelle Lawson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Animal welfare encompasses the physical and mental state of an animal, as well as how that animal is cared for. Recently, zoological settings have shifted from strictly housing animals to improving the welfare of the animal such that the goal of captivity is for residents to thrive. This is especially crucial as global wildlife numbers and biodiversity continues to decrease due to anthropogenic impacts such as poaching, mining, habitat destruction, fragmentation. Further confounding this issue is climate change, air pollution, invasive species, ocean acidification, and more. In particular, the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is an endangered species whose declined 50% …
Effects Of Guest Interactions On Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera Bonasus) Behavior In A Zoo Touch Tank, Lauren Hope
Effects Of Guest Interactions On Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera Bonasus) Behavior In A Zoo Touch Tank, Lauren Hope
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Touch tanks are increasingly popular exhibits at zoos and aquariums, and are at the center of scientific engagement with the public. Touch tanks can provide benefits to marine species through conservation outreach and research, and to guests through education, recreation, and stress reduction. Cownose rays are a popular species found in touch tanks due to their putative stress tolerance and docile nature. Yet, questions remain about ray tolerance to captivity, and studies are rare on their behavioral responses to touch tank environments and guest interactions. Here, I used an observational study to examine: (1) baseline ray behavior in a touch …
The Characterization Of Minicoopr Cell Line Clones For The Expression Of Wild Type Form Of Icer, Samantha Moscoso
The Characterization Of Minicoopr Cell Line Clones For The Expression Of Wild Type Form Of Icer, Samantha Moscoso
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The transcriptional repressor Inducible cyclic-AMP Early Repressor (ICER) is an isoform of the cAMP-responsive element modulator (CREM) gene. ICER protein has tumor suppressor activity by regulating cAMP-induced transcription. ICER has been found to be effective in providing an anti-tumor effect when in many tumors including melanomas. Melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer that begins when there is an overproduction of melanocytes. Using a zebrafish model for melanoma, our laboratory has recently demonstrated that zebrafish that are expressing ICER in their melanocytes succumbed to malignancies at a much faster rate than the control Green Fluorescent protein (GFP)- expressing fish. …
Neural Correlates Of Sub-Clinical Grandiose Cluster B Personality Disorders, Adriana Lavarco
Neural Correlates Of Sub-Clinical Grandiose Cluster B Personality Disorders, Adriana Lavarco
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The Cluster B personality disorders (PDs) include antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), and histrionic personality disorder (HPD). With impulsivity being a commonly shared symptom across the cluster B personality disorders, specifically in BPD, the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was targeted for TMS. Since these personality disorders are grouped together due to their shared ‘dramatic’ characteristics, the current study aimed to investigate the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on the presence of cluster B personality disorder traits in 13 healthy participants. We found that there is a significant decrease in …
Social Exclusion : How Inhibition And Excitation Of The Dorsal Lateral Prefrontal Cortex (Dlpfc) Influences Feelings Of Social Exclusion, Anthony Minervini
Social Exclusion : How Inhibition And Excitation Of The Dorsal Lateral Prefrontal Cortex (Dlpfc) Influences Feelings Of Social Exclusion, Anthony Minervini
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Social exclusion refers to the experience of rejection by one or more people during a social event. Cyberball, a computer program, is one of the most common tools for analyzing social exclusion. Cyberball simulates a game of catch in which any number of individuals or computer- generated players can pass a virtual ball to one another. Regions of the brain that underlies pain perception include networks lined to the Dorsal Lateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC). Direct manipulation of this area may provide a better understanding of how the DLPFC can influence the perception of social exclusion. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was …

Effects Of Time, Temperature, And Cooking Vessel On Antioxidant Potential, Ph, And Degrees Brix In The Processing Of Black Garlic, Victoria Gargano
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Garlic, from the allium family, is known to contain organosulfur compounds. These compounds contain antioxidants, which provide a plethora of potential health benefits. Black garlic is created by processing regular garlic at temperatures ranging between 60-90°C, with high humidity for upwards of one month. The process of making black garlic alters these components, potentially increasing the antioxidant capacity. This end product yields a garlic that is a deep black color with a sweet flavor, pungent aroma, and a soft malleable texture. Black garlic is increasing popularity within the culinary world with more products making it to market shelves. PURPOSE: To …
The Role Of Attentional Control And Social Influence In Risky Decision Making, Samantha Salernitano
The Role Of Attentional Control And Social Influence In Risky Decision Making, Samantha Salernitano
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
People often are required to make decisions in a collaborative environment, including decisions that deal with risky or uncertain outcomes. The present thesis investigated the role of both social influence and individual cognitive factors (attentional control) in risky decision making. Two measures of attentional control (a Stroop task and a Go/No-go task) were completed by participants. Risky choice was then measured through a hypothetical monetary gambling task where participants made choices between a smaller-guaranteed reward or a larger-risky reward. Three blocks of the risky-choice task were completed. Participants in the individual condition completed all three blocks of trials individually. For …
How Race And Gender Moderate The Effect Of Facial Trait Inferences On Leadership Perception, Calista Wong
How Race And Gender Moderate The Effect Of Facial Trait Inferences On Leadership Perception, Calista Wong
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Research on first impressions suggests that facial trait inferences guide judgments in many domains, including perceptions of leadership ability. This study explored the extent to which race and gender moderate such inferences on the perception of leadership. A total of 179 participants rated facial stimuli on one of three traits: leadership ability, dominance, and warmth It was hypothesized that perceived warmth would benefit Black male targets more than White and Asian male targets, and perceived dominance would benefit male White and Asian male targets more than Black male targets. No strong hypotheses were specified for female targets, as research on …
The Language Of Mechanical Support In Children: Is It ‘Sticking’, ‘Hanging’, Or Simply ‘On’?, Julia Marie Hauss
The Language Of Mechanical Support In Children: Is It ‘Sticking’, ‘Hanging’, Or Simply ‘On’?, Julia Marie Hauss
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Research has found that children begin to differentiate in the terms they use to encode support. In English, BE on, the Basic Locative Construction (Levinson & Wilkins, 2006; “put on” in dynamic events) tends to encode support-from-below (e.g., cup on table), whereas lexical support verbs (e.g., hang, stick, tape, glue, etc.) tend to encode mechanical support. We see this differentiation in semantic space by six years of age (Johannes et al., 2016). Although this differentiation occurs, we can still use BE on to encode all types of support, just as we can use a variety of lexical verbs (e.g., the …
