Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The housing deficit in Alaska is growing annually. The Municipality of Anchorage is in dire need of Affordable Housing. The housing sector has been the bedrock of most developed nations' economies. Housing construction indices are vital for measuring economic developments in emerging countries. Urban dwellers make up about 55% of the global population. This share is predicted to rise dramatically by 2030, adding 1.6 billion people to urban regions. Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly India, China, and Nigeria, will account for 90% of this rise. (U.N. 2020). The building sector wants to alleviate Alaska's affordable housing shortfall, but government regulations, …

An Assessment Of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists' Attitudes And Behaviors In Culinary Medicine And The Role Of The Rdn, Ellen Mcewen

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Culinary medicine (CM) is an emerging practice that combines evidence-based guidelines for health and disease management with practical food preparation techniques.1,2 Americans spend little time in the kitchen. Meanwhile, chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are increasingly common in the American population. CM can teach practical, buildable skills to help alleviate these conditions. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts who are well-positioned to be leaders in CM interventions but current research suggests an overall lack of understanding in how RDNs engage in CM in their work. Most RDNs work in the clinical setting, which …

Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy Through A Trust In Science Training Intervention, Nathan Dumessa

All Dissertations

Vaccine hesitancy is an ongoing public health issue that has been underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic and has implications for future pandemics and other vaccines. This research aimed to understand and address the factors associated with hesitancy. Study 1 was a correlational study that measured several factors that could predict vaccine hesitancy among Black and White participants recruited online (n = 364). Findings suggest that trust in science was the strongest predictor of attitudes towards the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, which in turn strongly predicted vaccine hesitancy. Study 1 established the direct and indirect relationships between several predictors of …

Air Coupled Impact Echo Testing Of Buried Concrete Pipes, Yash Kumar Dhabi May 2023

Air Coupled Impact Echo Testing Of Buried Concrete Pipes, Yash Kumar Dhabi

Doctoral Dissertations

Concrete pipes constitute an integral part of the buried infrastructure, and non-destructive testing (NDT) plays an important role in their maintenance effort. Impact echo (IE) is a well-established NDT technique that is widely used for the investigation of concrete structures. In this technique, the thickness (or resonant) frequency is first measured by inducing (compression) P-wave into the structure using an impact source and recording the elastic wave generated using an accelerometer. From the knowledge of P-wave velocity of the medium, the unknown thickness and subsurface defects are then established. To effectively apply this technique, the transducer should be properly coupled …

Insufficient Effort Responding, Elizabeth L. Regland May 2023

Insufficient Effort Responding, Elizabeth L. Regland

Doctoral Dissertations

The quality of self-report data has long been a concern, with increasing attention to the issue of insufficient effort responding (IER). Researchers have made considerable progress in developing techniques for handling IER (Meade & Craig, 2012; Huang, Bowling, Liu, & Li, 2014). This dissertation examines the use of IER best practices in survey research within the management literature through a series of essays. The results of the first study indicate that there is a lack of methodological transparency regarding how IER is addressed in the management literature. Simply stated, few authors report addressing IER in their manuscripts; thus, no conclusions …

Neonate Atlantic Sharpnose Shark (Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae) Relative Abundance And Body Condition In Two South Carolina Estuaries Varying In Urbanization, Rileigh E. Hawk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization near estuaries has been shown to affect the growth and survival of juvenile sharks using the system as a nursery. North Inlet and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, are similarly-sized, tidally-dominated, bar-built estuaries with extensive Sporobolus-lined tidal creeks but differ in degree of human impact. Previously, Murrells Inlet was shown to have a lower abundance and diversity of large sharks than North Inlet and Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) were shown to use North Inlet as a primary nursery. To examine potential differences in neonate shark abundance and growth between a developed estuary, Murrells Inlet, and a protected estuary, North …

BACKGROUND: Vascular Dementia (VaD) refers to dementia caused by cerebrovascular disease and/or reduced blood flow to the brain and is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. We previously found that in middle-aged rats subjected to a multiple microinfarction (MMI) model of VaD, treatment with AV-001, a Tie2 receptor agonist, significantly improves short-term memory, long-term memory, as well as improves preference for social novelty compared to control MMI rats. In this study, we tested the early therapeutic effects of AV-001 on inflammation and glymphatic function in rats subjected to VaD.

METHODS: Male, middle-aged Wistar rats (10-12 m), …

Gerstner, Maryam Rahman, Katherine B. Peters, Maciej Mrugala, Ashley Ghiaseddin

Neurosurgery Articles

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumor. They are slow growing and often incidentally found tumors that arise from the arachnoid villi. As they grow, they have a greater likelihood of becoming symptomatic with seizures being one of the most clinically significant symptoms. Seizures are more likely to present as a symptom of larger meningiomas and meningiomas that compress cortical areas particularly those in non-skull base locations. These seizures are often managed medically, utilizing the same anti-seizure medications that are used to treat other causes of epilepsy. We discuss common anti-seizure medications used including valproate, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin, lacosamide, …

Preserving Constitutional Integrity In The Age Of Cyberwarfare: A Paper Tiger, Or Death By A Thousand Cuts?, Darren Singh

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The Constitution is meant to serve as a necessary constraint on unilateral Executive military actions. Today, nation-states and non-state actors can launch devastating cyberattacks on the infrastructure, economy, military, and democratic systems of the United States. These attacks do not fall within the realm of “hostile actions” necessary to constitute war. Cyberattacks from adversaries are best deterred with offensive cyberattacks of our own. The President is the best actor to superintend and direct this active defense. Neither the Constitution nor the War Powers Resolution, however, offer a framework for how the United States may respond to these threats while also …

Differentiating Reading Profiles Of Children With Specific Comprehension Deficits From Skilled Readers: A Systematic Review, Daibao Guo, Luxi Feng, Tracey S. Hodges

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

The primary goal of the present systematic review was to examine the criteria and measures used for assessing students with specific comprehension deficit (SCD), who have adequate decoding skills, but still perform poorly on reading comprehension assessments. From a systematic review of 32 studies, we found four predominant selection approaches for classifying students with SCD and a wide range of measurements of reading skills used to distinguish students with SCD from skilled readers. In addition, to develop a reading profile for students with SCD, we performed a meta-analysis to quantify the characteristics of SCD by comparing their reading skills to …

Does Learning A Skill With The Expectation Of Teaching It Impair The Skill’S Execution Under Psychological Pressure If The Skill Is Learned With Analogy Instructions?, Daniel A. R. Cabral, Marcos Daou, Mariane F. B. Bacelar, Juliana O. Parma, Matthew W. Miller May 2023

Miller

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Having learners practice a motor skill with the expectation of teaching it (versus an expectation of being tested on it) has been revealed to enhance skill learning. However, this improvement in skill performance is lost when the skill must be performed under psychological pressure due to ‘choking under pressure.’ The present study investigated whether this choking effect is caused by an accrual of declarative knowledge during skill practice and could be prevented if a technique (analogy instructions) to minimize the accrual of declarative knowledge during practice is employed.

Design: We used a 2 (Expectation: teach/test) x 2 (Instructions: analogy/explicit) …

That Looks Easy!: Evidence Against The Benefits Of An Easier Criterion Of Success For Enhancing Motor Learning, Juliana O. Parma, Mariane F. B. Bacelar, Daniel A. R. Cabral, Keith R. Lohse, Nicola J. Hodges, Matthew W. Miller

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

OPTIMAL theory predicts providing learners with a relatively easier criterion of success during practice enhances motor learning through increased self-efficacy, perceptions of competence, and intrinsic motivation. However, mixed results in the literature suggest this enhancement effect may be moderated by the number of successes achieved by learners practicing with the difficult criterion. To investigate this possibility, we manipulated quantity of practice to affect the absolute number of successes achieved by learners practicing with different success criteria. Eighty participants were divided into four groups and performed 50 or 100 trials of a mini-shuffleboard task. Groups practiced with either a large or …

Decolonial Public History In Practice: A Collaborative Project On The Role Of Indigenous Women In The Fish Wars Of Washington State Of The 1960s And 1970s, Rachel Klade

History Graduate Projects and Theses

During the 1960s and 1970s, the waterways of the Pacific Northwest played host to fish-ins held by Indigenous communities as they sought to protect their way of life and ensure the continued recognition of their treaty rights to fish on and off their reservations. The Treaty of Medicine Creek of 1854 and Treaty of Point Elliot of 1855 guaranteed the fishing and hunting rights of Indigenous groups of the Pacific Northwest in “all usual and accustomed grounds and stations.” Due to impacts from hydroelectric dams, a growing lumber industry, sportsmen fishing, and other stresses on the waterways, salmon populations declined …

Effects Of Pubertal Growth Variation On Knee Mechanics During Walking In Female And Male Adolescents, Andrew W. Froehle, Brian A. Edwards, Matthew Peterson, Brian Meyerson, Dana Duren

School of Health and Exercise Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction: Puberty substantially alters the body's mechanical properties, neuromuscular control, and sex differences therein, likely contributing to increased, sex-biased knee injury risk during adolescence. Female adolescents have higher risk for knee injuries than male adolescents of similar age engaging in similar physical activities, and much research has investigated sex differences in mechanical risk factors. However, few studies address the considerable variation in pubertal growth (timing, pace), knee mechanics, and injury susceptibility within sexes, or the impact of such growth variation on mechanical injury risk.

Objectives: The present study tested for effects of variation in pubertal growth on established mechanical …
