An Investigation Of Peak Shape Models In Chiral Separations, Ryan Jacob Burk May 2023

An Investigation Of Peak Shape Models In Chiral Separations, Ryan Jacob Burk

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

The use of superficially porous particles in chromatography has led to significant improvements in separation efficiency. However, peak asymmetry in enantiomeric separations causes performance comparisons across particle types a challenge. In this study, we screened 28 pharmaceutically relevant compounds and developed practical methods to reduce peak asymmetry in normal phase chiral chromatography. The use of additives was found to be effective in reducing peak tailing for all compounds, including neutrals. Additionally, we observed that solvent mismatch with the eluent can cause system peak interference, which can be managed by reducing injection volumes. To more accurately assess the performance of the …

Patients With Heart Failure – A Qualitative Study, Elisa St. Clair Stehling May 2023

Patients With Heart Failure – A Qualitative Study, Elisa St. Clair Stehling

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

PATIENTS WITH HEART FAILURE – A QUALITATIVE STUDY People living with heart failure manage their diagnosis in diverse ways. The lived experiences of qualitative study participants are valuable for helping healthcare providers understand patient perspectives. When interviewed, the themes expressed by people living with heart failure aligned with the resilience theory by Greene (2002). Healthcare providers can use this theory to guide questions when interviewing people with heart failure and designing effective plans of care for this group of patients. Participants with heart failure were recruited for the phenomenological research project using ResearchMatch.org - an online volunteer organization of people …

Work Engagement, Burnout, And Well-Being In Nursing Professional Development Practitioners, Marlene Torres Porter May 2023

Work Engagement, Burnout, And Well-Being In Nursing Professional Development Practitioners, Marlene Torres Porter

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

This article-based manuscript dissertation will follow a two-manuscript process. The two manuscripts are related to work engagement, burnout, and well-being in the nursing professional development (NPD) practitioner. The first completed manuscript is a literature review that examines personal resources that affect work engagement, uncovers strategies to improve work engagement, and discusses the implications for the NPD practitioner. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria for the literature review identifying self-efficacy, resilience, optimism, meaning, mattering, hardiness, and grit as personal resources influencing work engagement. Strategies identified to improve work engagement included policy development, implementing self-awareness programs, and providing resilience, strengths, and gratitude …

Leveraging Population Genomics Across Two Taxonomically Diverse Non-Model Systems To Understand Patterns Of Disease Transmission And Consequences Of Hybridization, Zachary Lamar Nikolakis May 2023

Leveraging Population Genomics Across Two Taxonomically Diverse Non-Model Systems To Understand Patterns Of Disease Transmission And Consequences Of Hybridization, Zachary Lamar Nikolakis

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The field of population genomics has been mainly applied to questions centered around understanding molecular variation, impacts of evolutionary processes, and the history of populations. Here I leverage population genomic techniques across two different systems to understand patterns of disease transmission across heavily monitored and controlled parasite populations and consequences of hybridization between divergent rattlesnake lineages. I employed multiple genome sequencing techniques with new methods to infer close-order relatedness from highly inbred human blood fluke populations in order to understand transmission pathways across a region experiencing a resurgence in disease. I then use a comparative population genomic approach by sampling …

Medication Safety In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Fatoumata Jallow May 2023

Medication Safety In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Fatoumata Jallow

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

This article-based thesis comprises two manuscripts on medication safety strategies in community-dwelling older adults. A phenomenological method was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with 28 community-dwelling older adults over 65 years who took five or more prescription medications daily. Caregivers were encouraged to participate in interviews. The objective of the first manuscript was to explore the roles of patients, pharmacists, and providers in medication safety from the perspective of community-dwelling older adults. Inductive thematic analysis revealed six themes indicating varying perceived roles of medication safety by older adults. In addition, results show that the provider and pharmacist roles overlap but …

No Longer Scared To Fail, Kira Soricelli May 2023

No Longer Scared To Fail, Kira Soricelli

RhetTech

My narrative is about how bullying and social media affected my school experience growing up. It is an important piece on suicide awareness and mental health advocacy. I hope that by sharing my story, it will encourage people to be more comfortable talking about mental health issues and solutions as well as recognizing the validity of this global problem. I am proud to look at my experiences in college (such as being Secretary of the Random Acts of Kindness club) as I reflect on my past experiences that made me who I am today.

“White People Can Join Too”: A Critical Autoethnography On The Concept Of “Whiteness” In Relation To Middle Eastern American/Iranian American Racial Identity, Meredith Granmayeh May 2023

“White People Can Join Too”: A Critical Autoethnography On The Concept Of “Whiteness” In Relation To Middle Eastern American/Iranian American Racial Identity, Meredith Granmayeh

RhetTech

When discussions surrounding race in the United States occur, the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) ethnic minority group tends to be disregarded and their thoughts and concerns ignored. The classification of MENA people as “white” on all government documents in this country despite backlash from this group has led to a sense of racial confusion/frustration. I explore this issue through the critical autoethnography medium, a newer type of essay that combines personal narrative and academic elements in order to craft cultural commentary on or about a specific social identity. In the submitted work, I begin with and frequently revisit …

The Imbalanced Identity: To First-Generation Immigrant Parents, Isha Alam May 2023

The Imbalanced Identity: To First-Generation Immigrant Parents, Isha Alam

RhetTech

Imbalanced Identity is an opinion piece in the form of an open letter directed towards first generation immigrant parents, centered around personal conflict with identity that stems from being raised with conservative Islamic values while being exposed to Western ones. It sympathizes with the struggle that immigrant parents experience when raising their children in a new culture, while critiquing the intolerance and resulting lack of communication that creates a barrier between parent and child.

The Besa Code Of Honor: Albanian Muslims Who Saved The Jewish People During World War Ii, Chloe Freeman May 2023

The Besa Code Of Honor: Albanian Muslims Who Saved The Jewish People During World War Ii, Chloe Freeman

RhetTech

This Fall in my Composition & Rhetoric course, we learned about the Albanian Muslims and how during World War II there was no discrimination against Jews in Albania. We covered the Besa Muslims which was something new to me that I thought was both important and historic. In my paper, I make the argument that their willingness to sacrifice, put themselves in danger, and save people of a different religion was selfless, heroic, and remarkable for a country with hardly any Jewish population. My paper tells the stories of two specific Albanian Muslims who helped shelter and assist their Jewish …

Roles For Mycobacterial Dinb2 In Frameshift And Substitution Mutagenesis, Pierre Dupuy, Shreya Ghosh, Allison Fay, Oyindamola Adefisayo, Richa Gupta, Stewart Shuman, Michael S. Glickman

Publications and Research

Translesion synthesis by translesion polymerases is a conserved mechanism of DNA damage tolerance. In bacteria, DinB enzymes are the widely distributed promutagenic translesion polymerases. The role of DinBs in mycobacterial mutagenesis was unclear until recent studies revealed a role for mycobacterial DinB1 in substitution and frameshift mutagenesis, overlapping with that of translesion polymerase DnaE2. Mycobacterium smegmatis encodes two additional DinBs (DinB2 and DinB3) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis encodes DinB2, but the roles of these polymerases in mycobacterial damage tolerance and mutagenesis is unknown. The biochemical properties of DinB2, including facile utilization of ribonucleotides and 8-oxo- guanine, suggest that DinB2 could be …

Blessed Are The Peacemakers: The Future Burden Of Intrastate Conflict On Poverty, Jonathan D. Moyer

Frederick S. Pardee Center for International Futures: Faculty Scholarship

Intrastate conflict generally undermines human development but its effect on global poverty across different income thresholds remains poorly understood. This paper analyzes how many people will live in poverty due to intrastate civil conflict in 2030, 2050, and 2070 using the International Futures model and shared socioeconomic pathways, forecasting 12 scenarios for 179 countries. A baseline conflict scenario leads to an additional 148.2 million (range: 50.7 to 186.0 million) people living in extreme poverty (Sustainable Development Goal.

Firstly, we introduce SwitchFlow, a scheduling framework that addresses the limitations …

The Uncertain Judge, Courtney M. Cox May 2023

The Uncertain Judge, Courtney M. Cox

University of Chicago Law Review

The intellectually honest judge faces a very serious problem about which little has been said. It is this: What should a judge do when she knows all the relevant facts, laws, and theories of adjudication, but still remains uncertain about what she ought to do? Such occasions will arise, for whatever her preferred theory about how she ought to decide a given case—what I will call her preferred “jurisprudence”— she may harbor lingering doubts that a competing jurisprudence is correct instead. And sometimes, these competing jurisprudences provide conflicting guidance. When that happens, what should she do?

Drawing on emerging debates …

In Defense Of Chapter 11 For Mass Torts, Anthony J. Casey, Joshua C. Macey May 2023

In Defense Of Chapter 11 For Mass Torts, Anthony J. Casey, Joshua C. Macey

University of Chicago Law Review

This Essay argues that bankruptcy proceedings are well-suited to resolving mass tort claims. Mass tort cases create a collective action problem that encourages claimants who are worried about available recoveries to race to the courthouse to collect ahead of others. This race can destroy going concern value and lead to the dismemberment of valuable firms. Coordination among claimants is difficult as each one seeks to maximize its own recoveries. These are the very collective action and holdout problems that bankruptcy proceedings are designed to solve. As such, bankruptcy proceedings are appropriate means of resolving mass torts as long as they …

The HR 2562 system is a rare case where a brown dwarf companion resides in a cleared inner hole of a debris disk, offering invaluable opportunities to study the dynamical interaction between a substellar companion and a dusty disk. We present the first ALMA observation of the system as well as the continued Gemini Planet Imager monitoring of the companion's orbit with six new epochs from 2016 to 2018. We update the orbital fit, and in combination with absolute astrometry from GAIA, place a 3σ upper limit of 18.5 M J on the companion's mass. To interpret the ALMA observations, …

Beyond States: A Constitutional History Of Territory, Statehood, And Nation-Building, Craig Green May 2023

Beyond States: A Constitutional History Of Territory, Statehood, And Nation-Building, Craig Green

University of Chicago Law Review

The United States has always been more than simply a group of united states. The constitutional history of national union and component states is linked to a third category: federal territory. This Article uses an integrated history of territory, statehood, and union to develop a new framework for analyzing constitutional statehood. Three historical periods are crucial—the Founding Era, the Civil War, and Reconstruction—as times when statehood was especially malleable as a matter of constitutional law. During each of those formative periods, the most important constitutional struggles about statehood and the union involved federal territories.

Conflicts about territories reveal an important …

Taming Wildcat Stablecoins, Gary B. Gorton, Jeffery Y. Zhang May 2023

Taming Wildcat Stablecoins, Gary B. Gorton, Jeffery Y. Zhang

University of Chicago Law Review

Cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins, are all the rage. Investors are exploring ways to profit off of them. Governments are considering ways to regulate them. While the technology underlying cryptocurrencies is new, the economics is centuries old. Oftentimes, lawmakers are so focused on understanding a new technological innovation that they fail to ask what exactly is being created.

In this case, the new technology has recreated circulating private money in the form of stablecoins, which are similar to the banknotes that circulated in many countries during the nineteenth century. The implication is that stablecoin issuers are unregulated banks. Based on lessons learned …

Textbook Affordability At Smith College: Affirming Smith's Commitment To Creating An Inclusive, Equitable And Accessible Educational Community, Natalie Laroche May 2023

Textbook Affordability At Smith College: Affirming Smith's Commitment To Creating An Inclusive, Equitable And Accessible Educational Community, Natalie Laroche

Other Student Projects

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group’s (PIRG) Education Fund, notes that “in 2020, 65 percent of students surveyed reported skipping buying a textbook because of cost” (Vitez & Nagle, n.d.). The costs of course materials are rising at astronomical rates. According to the Student PIRGs, “the cost of textbooks and course materials has increased at three times the rate of inflation since the 1970s” (Xie, 2023). Textbooks are unnecessarily expensive and are increasingly a barrier to education access and student success. Extensive research has demonstrated that while publishers can get away with (and profit off of) high prices, students who …

Narratives Of Feminist Resistance: Women's Bodily Autonomy And The Dystopian Mode, Grace J. Bromage May 2023

Narratives Of Feminist Resistance: Women's Bodily Autonomy And The Dystopian Mode, Grace J. Bromage

English Honors Theses

This undergraduate thesis examines how dystopian fiction has responded to the sociopolitical issue of restrictions on women’s bodily autonomy, a question that has become more timely since the reversal of Roe v. Wade in Summer 2022. Particularly, I aim to understand how readers can use dystopian novels to shape real-world dialogue and how authors can use narrative strategies to encourage readers to resist oppression. My first chapter takes a broad approach, tracing the development of dystopian fiction from a genre to a mode and using Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time (1976) as a case study of how …

Through Her Eyes: Learning And Teaching About Racism Through "To Kill A Mockingbird" And "The Bluest Eye", Sloane Larsen May 2023

Through Her Eyes: Learning And Teaching About Racism Through "To Kill A Mockingbird" And "The Bluest Eye", Sloane Larsen

English Honors Theses

This thesis argues that Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird both merit a place in te United States’ secondary education systems by using use them in the classroom to encourage students to recognize and challenge their biases, perspectives, and choices. One of the many complex questions this thesis addresses is the efficacy of teaching students about racism using such novels. Teaching these novels through Critical Race Theory could help create a new generation of students who are more likely to address and challenge their biases and privilege. At the same time, this approach requires …

The Art Of Mukluk Making; The Preservation Of Yup'ik Boots, Jolene D. Lyon May 2023

The Art Of Mukluk Making; The Preservation Of Yup'ik Boots, Jolene D. Lyon

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The Art of Mukluk Making has been dwindling for the past 50 years in my lifetime; with the passing of the elderly women within the Yup’ik community, they took this skill’s expertise with them. Today only a tiny handful of elders are alive to share their proficiency. Those interested in the traditional role want to learn to preserve the knowledge to make them for their children and family members; others want to make them for the challenge of wanting to learn, and some for the simplicity of keeping the culture alive. No matter how it is perceived, teachers and experts …
