The Majority As The Minority: A Single Case Study Exploring Campus Environment And The Retention Of Racial Minority Students Attending A 2-Year Technical Hbcu In South Carolina, Meaghan Sharon Avery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The existing retention literature focuses on White students and non-White students in predominantly White institutional (PWI) environments. Furthermore, prevailing literature tends to concentrate on varying factors that influence these students to be retained at their respective institutions. Retention factors in differing contexts, such as historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), have been studied to a much lesser degree. Moreover, even fewer studies exist on how the campus environment at 2-year HBCUs influences retention or departure. Using a qualitative case study methodology, this study explores how the institutional environment of a rural southern 2-year technical HBCU influences the retention of racial …
Jurisdictional Conflicts In Adult Guardianship, David M. English
Jurisdictional Conflicts In Adult Guardianship, David M. English
Faculty Publications
The case of Britney Spears has shined a spotlight on guardianship, a subject area in which there has been increasing interest in recent years. The events surrounding Ms. Spears s case all occurred in a single jurisdiction, California. But with Americas increasingly mobile population, an individual for whom a guardianship is sought may have contacts with multiple states and, in some cases, foreign countries. Furthermore, following the appointment of a guardian, the guardian or individual subject to guardianship may move to another jurisdiction; it may become necessary to transfer the guardianship proceeding to another jurisdiction or seek ratification of a …
Compassion Fatigue Seen In Ems Workers Treating Chronic Opioid Users, Amelia Kruse, Jason Wasserman
Compassion Fatigue Seen In Ems Workers Treating Chronic Opioid Users, Amelia Kruse, Jason Wasserman
Posters
Opioid use and misuse has been rising nationwide since 1999, as have the number of opioid-related deaths. This has not been limited to illicit drug use, but accelerated by prescribing practices that have ignored concerns about addiction. Emergency services have seen an increasingly high volume of opioid overdose and injury patients, but little additional support to respond to this crisis. This study seeks to investigate EMS workers perceptions of the opioid crisis and the barriers they face to providing adequate response.

In any clinical setting, the patient’s preferences are respected and valued by the medical team. As clear as that may seem, that can be tough when considering all the perspectives of what makes up a patient’s best interest (BI), especially for a minor. In the literature, there is wide disagreement about the interpretation of BI. The primary goal of this project is to unearth the perspectives that play into a pediatric patient’s best interest and delineate how and whether family interests should be considered.

Differences In Rational And Relational Autonomy During End-Of-Life Care, Michael Balce, Mark C. Navin, Abram Brummett, Jason Wasserman

Within biomedical ethics, the principle of autonomy focuses on a patient’s right to make choices about his or her medical decisions and care. Along these lines, patients can then make decisions based on their own beliefs, attitudes, and customs, which is referred to as rational autonomy. However, shared-decision making is often more complicated than this, and patients often desire input from their spouse, family, and other trusted individuals, which is termed relational autonomy. These two concepts of autonomy drive different approaches to an individual’s perceptions and choices regarding medical-decision making during the end of one’s life.

Between an adult patient and physician they are the only two people that have a say in the patient’s medical treatment with the patient having the final say. In pediatrics, there is a patient, parent, and physician which adds a third party that is a proxy decision maker for the child but lacks absolute authority over the child’s treatment. The goal of this study is to give a sense of the diversity of the pediatric ethics literature regarding parent/physician disagreements and to address ambiguities about pediatric interventions.

Navigating when to intervene against parents’ wishes is a difficult task in pediatrics. Different frameworks have been proposed, but disagreements remain. One problem debated about in pediatric intervention principles often refer to different kinds of interventions (e.g. calling Child Protective Services, consulting the Ethics Committee). This project reports results of a critical scoping review of recent bioethics literature about the concept of pediatric intervention principles.

The Flexner Report, written in 1910, may have revolutionized medical education, but it also recommended and led to the closure of all but two Black medical schools. While recent decades have lead to increased attention to diversity and inclusion, representation of historically marginalized groups among students and faculty has been slow to materialize.
Black Lives Matter protests encouraged a national dialogue over the need for more effective DEI initiatives and increased antiracist material in medical school curricula. Organizations such as White Coats 4 Black Lives developed “Call to Action” letters to medical school administrations across the country.

The Best Interest Standard (BIS) has been a much-debated guidance principle in clinical ethics with ambiguous definition and application. In this study we focus on the conceptions of best interests that differ according to which kinds of interests are included. While there is wide agreement that ‘best interests’ include the physiological welfare of a patient, there is still substantial disagreement about which other interests are included in wider accounts of welfare, the balancing of those other interests, and whether interests are objective or subjective.

Surrogate decision making is a key component in the hierarchy of medical decisions, whereby an assigned individual makes choices on behalf of a patient incapable of making the decision themselves. Although this is common in healthcare, there are still many questions about best surrogate practices and ethical credibility. This capstone project aspires to map these concepts and discuss issues related to the current landscape of surrogate decision making with regards to medical ethics through the use of a systematic literature review.

Interdisciplinary Approaches To Pediatric Aquatic-Based And Land-Based Therapy, Danielle E. Scheck
Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations
With various injuries, diseases, and conditions continuing to grow and expand with our rising population size, so does the need for therapeutic intervention. To assist in the rehabilitation process, aquatic therapy may be used by multiple healthcare professionals to best benefit their clients through the aquatic medium's unique hydrodynamic and hydrostatic qualities. The aquatic medium is particularly beneficial to the pediatric population as water is usually naturally motivating and "fun." Occupational and physical therapists are among the professionals qualified to perform "aquatic-based" therapy in addition to or in place of more traditional "land-based" therapy. This project aims to expand on …

Adversarial Deep Learning And Security With A Hardware Perspective, Joseph Clements
All Dissertations
Adversarial deep learning is the field of study which analyzes deep learning in the presence of adversarial entities. This entails understanding the capabilities, objectives, and attack scenarios available to the adversary to develop defensive mechanisms and avenues of robustness available to the benign parties. Understanding this facet of deep learning helps us improve the safety of the deep learning systems against external threats from adversaries. However, of equal importance, this perspective also helps the industry understand and respond to critical failures in the technology. The expectation of future success has driven significant interest in developing this technology broadly. Adversarial deep …

The Efficacy Of Neuroleptics On Mental Health Disorders, Rathea Hersi
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
Mental health disorders affect a lot of people in the world and can be triggered by a wide variety of reasons. The treatment of mental health disorders varies based on the type of disorder one is dealing with, as well as the symptoms that each portrays. While history has changed how people view mental health disorders, it also shows that the models of treatment used have not always been beneficial to the wellness of human beings. Research shows that there are different ways in which mental health disorders affect the brain, which means that a study of the different parts …

This paper serves to inform and explain the treatment of Black women within the healthcare system. Black women and their babies are dying at insane rates in the United States. Most of the deaths are preventable. The numbers are alarming and have caught the eyes of society and the government. This tragedy is serious and brings many questions. This paper and my research are created to answer most of those questions. The main question is why the maternal mortality and morbidity rates for Black women are higher than any other race. This question is my research question and the foundation …

Telecontraception: An Evaluative Research Study On Birth Control Accessibility Via Smart Phone Applications, Salma Yazmin Atiya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Birth control accessibility in the United States continues to be a growing issue. Studies have shown that barriers such as transportation to clinics, ability to obtain an appointment at a clinic, having time off work or school, cost, lack of insurance, and residing in contraceptive deserts prevents women from obtaining birth control. However, with telemedicine on the rise, new technologies are becoming available, such as telecontraceptionâ??a recent innovation, where people can obtain birth control through a website or an app on smart phone devices. Telecontraception could potentially serve as a tool to narrow the birth control accessibility gap for uninsured …
Intra-Ethnic Sociocultural Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences Of Transnational Populations Of Latin American Origin In The Borderlands, Selfa Chew
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This research explores transnational capitals affecting the educational experiences of populations of Latin American origin in the borderlands, using a qualitative methodology: testimonios. Several schools of thought, including Critical Pedagogy, Critical Race, Latina/o Critical, and Marxist theories direct this examination of heterogeneous educational experiences and outcomes in Latinx populations. This study concludes that the educational path of Latinx students is determined in part by different forms of tangible and intangible capitals, held by students and their families in their countries of origin, transferable across borders, and operating through intersectional systems of oppression. Using Marxist theoretical frameworks, including Bourdieuâ??s theory of …

Volatility Modeling Of Time Series Using Fractal And Self-Similarity Models, William Kubin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The study uses various methods to compare financial and geophysical time series scaling parameters and long-term memory behavior. The Cantor Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (CDFA) method is proposed to provide more accurate estimates of Hurst exponents. The CDFA method is applied to real-time series and the results are verified. The study also analyzes the memory behavior of daily Covid-19 cases before and after the announcement of effective vaccines. Low and high-frequency dataâ??s influence on the Hurst Index estimation is investigated, and a new PCDFA method is proposed. The stability of the Dow Jones Industrial Average is analyzed using a multi-scale normalized …
Nonparametric Estimation Of Elliptical Copulas, Panfeng Liang
Nonparametric Estimation Of Elliptical Copulas, Panfeng Liang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Elliptical copulas provide flexibility in modeling the dependence structure of a random vector. They are often parameterized with a correlation matrix and a scalar function, called generator. The estimation of the generator can be challenging, because it is a functional parameter. In this dissertation, we provide a rigorous approach to estimating the generator in a Bayesian framework, which is simpler, more robust, and outperforms existing estimation methods in the literature. Based on the proposed framework in this dissertation, other researchers may modify the model for other types of generators in their own research.
Microscopic And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid Effect On Astrocytes, Lizbeth Vanessa Martinez Lopez
Microscopic And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid Effect On Astrocytes, Lizbeth Vanessa Martinez Lopez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Astrocytes, one of the most abundant cell components in the central nervous system (CNS), have been a research target in the last few years. Several studies have found that astrocytes are not only mere supporters of neurons but also of essential processes developed in the CNS. Their malfunction could induce neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. Thus, further understanding of astrocytes and their role is of high interest to develop possible new treatments and methods of disease diagnosis, especially in brain cancer. The plant Larrea tridentata (La Gobernadora in Mexico or Creosote bush in the United States) is known to have …
