Exploring The Association Of Student-Teacher Relationships And Mathematics Teaching Styles With Star Renaissance Mathematics Scores In A Group Of Middle School Students At A Midwestern School., Sydney Lund

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

This study aimed to explore the relationship between middle school students’ perceived student-teacher relationships, students’ perceived mathematics teachers’ teaching styles, and middle school students’ Fall benchmark Star Renaissance mathematics assessment scores at a Midwest public school. The positivist paradigm served as a lens to formulate this cross-sectional correlational study. A Qualtrics questionnaire was developed and contained the Student Version of The Teacher-Student Relationship Inventory (S-TSRI), an adapted version of The Teaching Styles Inventory, and a selection of demographic variables (e.g., grade level, gender, family structure). The Star Renaissance mathematics assessment Fall 2022 benchmark was introduced to the database after …

Effectiveness Of A Question Formulation Rubric With Second-Year Medical Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Jonathan D. Eldredge, Melissa A. Schiff, Jens Langsjoen Apr 2023

Effectiveness Of A Question Formulation Rubric With Second-Year Medical Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Jonathan D. Eldredge, Melissa A. Schiff, Jens Langsjoen

Publications

OBJECTIVE: The FAC (Focus, Amplify, Compose) rubric for assessing medical students' question formulation skills normally accompanies our Evidence Based Practice (EBP) training. The combined training and assessment rubric have improved student scores significantly. How much does the rubric itself contribute to improved student scores? This study sought to measure student improvement using the rubric either with or without a linked 25-minute training session.

METHODS: Randomized Controlled Trial. The authors tested the hypothesis that a 25-minute training session combined with use of a rubric would lead to higher scores than a brief explanation of this rubric alone. All 72 participating second-year …

The Rotational Period Distribution Of Massive Magnetic White Dwarfs, Zorayda Martinez Apr 2023

The Rotational Period Distribution Of Massive Magnetic White Dwarfs, Zorayda Martinez

Honors Theses

Rapidly rotating white dwarfs (WDs) have the potential to come about by either double degenerate mergers or weak coupling between the core and the outer envelope during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). For both cases, knowledge of the rotational period distribution places tight constraints on the evolution of angular momentum transfer. Here we present initial results from a study of the rotational period distribution of 19 massive (M > 0:9M), magnetic, DA WDs observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and 17 observed with ground-based telescopes and analyzed with the Lightkurve python package. We present periodograms, folded light curves, and …

The Traditional, Scriptural “Mary's” Characterization, Olivia Johnson Apr 2023

The Traditional, Scriptural “Mary's” Characterization, Olivia Johnson

Undergraduate Theses

Women named “Mary” commonly appear in the Gospel accounts, and these stories of the “Marys,” namely the anointing Mary, Mary the sister of Martha, and Mary Magdalene, have been commonly associated with one another throughout Christian history. In researching the commentaries and interpretations produced within the patristic and medieval centuries (2nd-13th century), in conjunction with the biblical passages in which she appears, we can begin to understand how tradition has characterized the identity of “Mary.” This research explores the tradition surrounding this woman, particularly her key characteristics stemming from her posture as the “Woman at Jesus’ feet” and Jesus’ unique …

Cultural Concepts Of Distress And Clinical Intake Processes For Chinese And Chinese American Populations In The United States, Jasmina Harambasic Apr 2023

Cultural Concepts Of Distress And Clinical Intake Processes For Chinese And Chinese American Populations In The United States, Jasmina Harambasic

Undergraduate Theses

Research shows that Chinese Americans underutilize mental health services more than any other ethnic group in the U.S. This project aims to explore the mental health experiences of Chinese American and immigrant communities, with a specific focus on clinical intake processes, including interviews and screening assessments. Cultural concepts of distress refer to ways that cultural groups experience and communicate mental distress, and an exploration of these illness experiences within Chinese American populations can inform how to adapt or develop screening and interview tools to fully capture personal narrations of illness during intake processes in preparation for treatment. Challenges that may …

British Imperialism And Cultural Anxieties In Christina Rossetti’S Goblin Market, Krystyn Stacy Apr 2023

British Imperialism And Cultural Anxieties In Christina Rossetti’S Goblin Market, Krystyn Stacy

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Goblin Market (1862) by Christina Rossetti is a narrative, fantasy poem about two sisters, Lizzie and Laura, who face temptations from goblin men who, on the surface, sell fruit at a market, but whose addictive wares physically debilitate their customers to the point of death. Given that the release of this poem in the thick of England’s Victorian era coincides with the reign of the British Empire, I read and understand it in light of that historical context. In this reading, Goblin Market conveys cultural anxieties about what the British Empire means for England, specifically as it deals with commercial …

Resource Allocation Methods In Vanets: A Systemic Literature Review, Andrew Trombly

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Autonomous vehicles take on a more prominent part of our everyday life activities. As the number of vehicles grows, so does the need for resources to ensure safe and consistent operations of these vehicles. Today’s networks and power grid are already used heavily just supplying resources for our day-to-day lives and leisure. The continuous increase in demand for such resources drives the need for more advanced resource management tools and techniques and more precise resource allocation schemes. This paper is a systematic literature review on the current methods and research trends for resource allocation in vehicular networks. The purpose of …

Mathematical Modeling Of The Marital Interaction Dynamics, Iris Gomez Apr 2023

Mathematical Modeling Of The Marital Interaction Dynamics, Iris Gomez

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

We may never think the marriage interaction can be mathematically modeled. It is indeed possible applying only fundamental college math. By the Rapid Couples Interaction Scoring System, a videotaped interactive discussion between a couple and detailed aspects of their emotions are coded to give scores for each one of the couple. Humor and smiling are important for good relations generating positive scores, while anger or criticism are bad for relations generating negative scores. These scores are employed to construct score curves for both the husband and wife reacting to each other. We establish discrete mathematical models for these score curves …

The Importance Of Faculty Mentorship In Higher Education, Ashley Martinez, Rafika Islam, Julianne Ramirez

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Faculty mentorship can have an impact on a student's academic performance and career exploration in higher education. Several studies have highlighted the stressors that can hinder students from pursuing higher education, including the gap between themselves and their peers. However, data has supported that many of these concerns are not only addressed by faculty support but oftentimes are resolved by the increased opportunities these mentorships provide. Faculty mentoring programs, such as the Faculty Advising Program, offer students the consistent guidance and resources needed to thrive during their time in college. The data presented for our poster is from our own …

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Many individuals face persistent inequalities in income, housing, employment, education, and health care access. Recent research demonstrates that such inequities indeed affect one's mental health and well-being. Our research focuses on depression among the Hispanic population of Bexar County. According to data from Policy Map, approximately 60-70 percent of Bexar County’s population identifies as Hispanic. Only 18.4 percent of the general population in the county reports medically diagnosed depression. We suspect that dramatically higher rates of undiagnosed depression exist among Hispanics. Hispanic individuals tend to face underdiagnosis due to factors such as lower socioeconomic status, stigma and stereotypes, racial disparities …

Examining The Association Between Awareness And Acceptance Of Impermanence And Humility, Caitlin Weldon, Briella A. Nava, Ho Phi Huynh Apr 2023

Examining The Association Between Awareness And Acceptance Of Impermanence And Humility, Caitlin Weldon, Briella A. Nava, Ho Phi Huynh

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

People who appreciate their smallness compared to the vastness of the world can detach themselves from their egos and become humble. We argue that humility is not only about the relative size of the ego, but also about the relative
time in which the ego exists. The current study examined the relationship between awareness and acceptance of the fleeting nature of time (impermanence) and humility. We collected data from 257 adults residing in the United States
through an online study. Participants completed a measure of impermanence and measures of humility. Bivariate correlations suggested that there were significant positive correlations between …

Exploring The Association Between Humility And Self-Compassion, Analise Espinoza

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Humility is virtue that allows one to pursue life with limited pride or arrogance. Humble people tend to view themselves accurately, and tend to be aware and appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. We wondered whether humble people would be more self-compassionate. Self-compassionate people are more likely to treat themselves with kindness, and mindfulness, especially when faced with adverse events. As such, it would make sense that humble people, who have the ability to assess their own faults and gifts, can extend themselves grace and kindness in the face of adversity. To test this association, we asked participants to complete an …

Health & Humility By Proxy: Examining Medical Companions’ Perspective On Physician Humility, Brianna Williamson Apr 2023

Health & Humility By Proxy: Examining Medical Companions’ Perspective On Physician Humility, Brianna Williamson

Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)

Humility has been assessed from numerous angles in psychology. Previous research has examined physician humility and its relevance to quality of care and doctor-patient relationships. In the past, humility—as defined by the patient perspective—has been shown to increase patient trust, overall health outcome, and other positive factors. In the current study, we will explore humility from the perspective of medical companions (someone who accompanies the
patient to their doctor's visit). Using an online study, 304 participants were asked to rate physician humility and list exemplary behaviors seen at their most recent visit. Patients usually have established rapport with their medical …

Long Term Monitoring Of Grand Ravines Park Restoration: An Authentic Research Opportunity For Jenison High School Students And Beyond, Karina C. White

Masters Projects

Access to authentic research is limited at the 7-12 science education level. At the same time, many local restoration projects would benefit from, but don’t have access to a long-term system of monitoring. This project seeks to unite those two needs by developing a protocol for 7-12 classrooms to be able to participate in authentic research through long-term monitoring of a local restoration project. The protocol developed in this project was used by Jenison High School students at Grand Ravines Park. Grand Ravines Park is a recently acquired Ottawa County park with a history of anthropogenic disturbances. Shortly after the …

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is emerging as an alternative archival memory technology. Recent advancements in DNA synthesis and sequencing have both increased the capacity and decreased the cost of storing information in de novo synthesized DNA pools. In this survey, we review methods for translating digital data to and/or from DNA molecules. An emphasis is placed on methods which have been validated by storing and retrieving real-world data via in-vitro experiments.

To recycle waste material produced by fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers, a recycler was designed and manufactured to convert plastic scraps into usable filament. The device does so by breaking down plastic material to a uniform size with the shredder, melting and compressing these pieces into a cylindrical strand with the extruder, and wrapping this strand around a filament spool with the spooler. As the device is mostly made from commercially-available components, it is easily maintainable and user-serviceable, while also costing less than similar devices on the market.

Genetic studies of Alzheimer disease (AD) have prioritized variants in genes related to the amyloid cascade, lipid metabolism, and neuroimmune modulation. However, the cell-specific effect of variants in these genes is not fully understood. Here, we perform single-nucleus RNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) on nearly 300,000 nuclei from the parietal cortex of AD autosomal dominant (APP and PSEN1) and risk-modifying variant (APOE, TREM2 and MS4A) carriers. Within individual cell types, we capture genes commonly dysregulated across variant groups. However, specific transcriptional states are more prevalent within variant carriers. TREM2 oligodendrocytes show a dysregulated autophagy-lysosomal pathway, MS4A microglia have dysregulated complement cascade genes, and …

Pancreatic development requires spatially and temporally controlled expression of growth factors derived from mesenchyme. Here, we report that in mice the secreted factor Fgf9 is expressed principally by mesenchyme and then mesothelium during early development, then subsequently by both mesothelium and rare epithelial cells by E12.5 and onwards. Global knockout of the
