Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Disease biomarker analysis has become a crucial tool for diagnosing and evaluating disease prognosis, especially with the increasing understanding of diseases at the molecular level. Abnormalities in various biomarkers can indicate diseased states, and can be used to rapidly and specifically detect and quantify diseases using optical biosensing techniques (Gao et al., 2023). Optical biosensing techniques have several advantages over traditional methods including higher sensitivity, specificity, and faster analysis times (Plikusiene and Ramanaviciene, 2023). It also allows for non-invasive sample collection. With advancements in optical biosensing technology, many medical conditions including cancers, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders can be accurately …

Creating Safe Spaces For African American Male Students, Zakeya Tanae Good
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In American society, the African American male population is often misinterpreted and misunderstood. The media has played a pivotal role in creating, as well as maintaining, negative and unbalanced perceptions of African American males. This societal phenomenon has become prevalent in the education system as it begins the cycle of perceived stereotypes and exposes African American male students to school experiences that are influenced by personal biases and discrimination. This study served two purposes: (1) to explore the experiences of school leaders as it relates to the interactions with African American male students, and (2) to gain a better understanding …

An Analysis Of Burnout And Wellness Of Healthcare Workers Based On Patient Population And Healthcare Worker Location, Spencer Brandenburg
Undergraduate Theses
Healthcare workers, even with all of the positive work that they do, often suffer from increased burnout and decreased wellness/quality of life. This problem is not new and has been steadily worsening for many years, however, there are factors which impact burnout and wellness that have not been analyzed or have produced mixed results in prior burnout and wellness literature. There has been little to no research done on the impact of patient population demographics on burnout and wellness in healthcare workers, and the research analyzing the impacts of demographic healthcare worker location has consistently produced mixed results often based …

Detecting Ai Generated Text Using Neural Networks, Jesse Guerrero
Detecting Ai Generated Text Using Neural Networks, Jesse Guerrero
Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)
Since the creation of the perceptron in the late 1950’s, neural networks have been used as a theoretical model for machine learning but have been limited by the computational proficiency of our machines. Over the past three decades, increasing computational power has allowed neural network research to flourish at an unprecedented rate. For this research, we explore the topic of detecting machine generated text by using a neural network that learns how to read language. Particularly, we took a pre-trained model, RoBERTa, and used it to distinguish between human, mutation, and synthetic text. The topic of machine generated detection has …

The Boise State University Microgravity Team has been challenged with designing a mechanical Zip-tie tool to be used during EVA missions on the ISS. NASA is looking for a new tool that will allow astronauts to fasten zip-ties to secure wires and hoses. This tool would need to have a number of zip-ties stored internally, be quickly reusable, and would need to be easily and safely operated by an astronaut in a single handed operation.

In this work, we report on the effects of hypoosmotic stress, cholesterol depletion, and pore-forming toxin on physical properties of membranes, such as lipid order and fluidity. To achieve our goals, we employed Red Blood Cells as model membranes, and Laurdan as a solvato-chromic indicator of the membrane state. The generalized polarization function of Laurdan’s fluorescence was measured in different environmental conditions, and the experimental data were interpreted in terms of changes in lipid order and fluidity as previously reported for lipid membranes undergoing temperature-induced phase transitions. Our experiments indicate that hypoosmotic stress leads to a reduced lipid order and …

Social Spending, Poverty, And Immigration: A Systematic Analysis Of Welfare State Effectiveness And Nativity In 24 Upper- And Middle-Income Democracies, Amie Bostic, Allen Hyde
Sociology Faculty Publications
Previous research has highlighted the disadvantaged position immigrants often face in the economy, particularly when it comes to labor market outcomes such as employment or earnings. Extending this literature, the present study evaluates the economic exclusion of immigrants, conceptualized not as labor market outcomes but as relative poverty. This study examines the relationship between welfare generosity and immigrant poverty across rich western democracies and compares this relationship with that of native poverty. One publicly held belief is that immigrants disproportionately benefit from welfare generosity, while the literature on welfare chauvinism suggests greater social spending may not necessarily benefit immigrants. Furthermore, …

Data collection is a vital component in any organization in regards to keeping track of user activity, gaining statistics and improving the user experience, and user identification. While the underlying basis of data collection is understandable, the use of this data has to be closely regulated and documented. In many cases, the VCDPA (Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act) outlines the guidelines for data use, data controller responsibilities, and limitations however nonprofit organizations are exempt from compliance. Colleges and universities, although still held to some degree of limitation, range in permissiveness with what data they choose to collect and retain but …

HER2-targeted therapy has improved breast cancer survival, but treatment resistance and disease prevention remain major challenges. Genes that enable HER2/Neu oncogenesis are the next intervention targets. A bioinformatics discovery platform of HER2/Neu-expressing Diversity Outbred (DO) F1 Mice was established to identify cancer-enabling genes. Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) associated with onset ages and growth rates of spontaneous mammary tumors were sought. Twenty-six genes in 3 QTL contain sequence variations unique to the genetic backgrounds that are linked to aggressive tumors and 21 genes are associated with human breast cancer survival. Concurrent identification of TSC22D3, a transcription factor, and its target gene …

Promoting Engagement Through Socioscientific Inquiry At The Middle School Level, Kaitlyn Kalehuawehe
Undergraduate Theses
Learning science is not just about facts. It is an area that has the potential to expand beyond the classroom. There is a concern for students having negative associations with science, and not seeing the relevance it plays within their lives. The curriculum should reflect science's value within society and its influence on complex issues. Learning science in the context of socioscientific issues (SSI) can promote an understanding that connects science to society and everyday life. The main objective of this thesis is the see how the use of SSI in the middle school classroom can promote student engagement and …
The Bellarmine Bee Bed: Organizing A Native Plant Garden Using Feedback From The Local Community, Kate Moran
The Bellarmine Bee Bed: Organizing A Native Plant Garden Using Feedback From The Local Community, Kate Moran
Undergraduate Theses
Animal pollinators are the cornerstone of healthy ecosystems. Their survival is essential for the persistence of entire food chains: from the flowers they cross-pollinate directly, to the animals who depend on those plants for nutrition. The establishment of pollinator gardens—particularly ones that consist of native plants—is an effective way to enhance their biodiversity, abundance, and well-being.
The main goal of this thesis is to construct a pollinator garden that maximizes the benefits for animal pollinators using feedback from local gardeners. A survey was used to gather information about the popularity and preferences of 40 flowering plants, and after analyzing the …

Confessions Of Crooks: An Analysis Of How Art Influences Society's View On Antiheroes And Redemption Through An Original Short Story Collection, Connor Thomas Wilkerson
Undergraduate Theses
The twenty-first century has successfully bred the notion that everyone who commits a morally reprehensible action is themselves a morally reprehensible individual with absolutely no redeeming factors. This notion, however, simply isn’t accurate as it is shown in not only some of the most popular media of the age but also some of the most famous crimes of the age that people who commit heinous actions aren’t always entirely heinous. With this thesis, I plan to make an argument that condemns judgement on the morality of individuals without knowing their full stories. Specifically, I plan to write a short story …
A Potential Role Of Gsk-3beta In The Development Of Pain Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Emily Ernst
A Potential Role Of Gsk-3beta In The Development Of Pain Post-Spinal Cord Injury, Emily Ernst
Undergraduate Theses
Chronic neuropathic pain is a very common consequence following spinal cord injury (SCI) and poses significant clinical challenge. Current treatments are largely ineffective and as a result, patients are often left with debilitating pain at and below the level of the spinal cord injury. After spinal injury, a cascade of events occurs within the nervous system. One important aspect of this cascade for investigation is the anatomical changes that occur post-SCI. There is evidence of maladaptive sprouting/growth in sensory nerve fibers that is thought to play a role in the development and amplification of pain signals. Sprouting of primary afferents …

Enhancing Neural Text Detector Robustness With Μattacking And Rr-Training, Gongbo Liang, Jesus Guerrero, Fengbo Zheng, Izzat Alsmadi
Computer Science Faculty Publications (Archived)
With advanced neural network techniques, language models can generate content that looks genuinely created by humans. Such advanced progress benefits society in numerous ways. However, it may also bring us threats that we have not seen before. A neural text detector is a classification model that separates machine-generated text from human-written ones. Unfortunately, a pretrained neural text detector may be vulnerable to adversarial attack, aiming to fool the detector into making wrong classification decisions. Through this work, we propose µAttacking, a mutation-based general framework that can be used to evaluate the robustness of neural text detectors systematically. Our experiments demonstrate …

Sexual Experiences And Gpa Among First Time College Freshmen, Marcus Lafrenz
Student Research Symposium 2023 (Archived)
The college experience presents newfound freedom to explore risky behaviors, such as drinking, drug use, or unprotected sexual activity. Previous research reveals that risky sexual behaviors can lead to multiple sex partners, STIs, and unwanted pregnancies. Few studies examine how college students’ sexual experiences relate to their academic performance. This study tested if sexual activity and the number of sexual partners were associated with GPA. 111 first-year students reported whether they had ever had vaginal intercourse and their number of sexual partners in the last six months. Regression models revealed that freshmen who reported ever having sex had a lower …

Effects Of Tempering Temperature On Gas Turbine Fan Cases, Seth Utter
Effects Of Tempering Temperature On Gas Turbine Fan Cases, Seth Utter
Honors Scholar Theses
The project aimed to investigate the effects of tempering temperature on metals used for gas turbine engine fan cases as a major relevant concern is containing blades in during blade-out events. There are three ways to accomplish this: using a thicker metal, incorporating different materials into the case, or heat treating the metal. This project focused on the third solution: reviewing the impact toughness and hardness of fractured samples and their equivalent ductile-to-brittle transition shear faces. Given its availability, 1045 steel, as opposed to aerospace grade metals, was used for in-house testing. The data obtained from these experiments were then …
