BACKGROUND: The Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) compilation includes 73 defined implementation strategies clustered into nine content areas. This taxonomy has been used to track implementation strategies over time using surveys. This study aimed to improve the ERIC survey using cognitive interviews with non-implementation scientist clinicians.

METHODS: Starting in 2015, we developed and fielded annual ERIC surveys to evaluate liver care in the Veterans Health Administration (VA). We invited providers who had completed at least three surveys to participate in cognitive interviews (October 2020 to October 2021). Before the interviews, participants reviewed the complete 73-item ERIC survey and marked …

Pancreatic development requires spatially and temporally controlled expression of growth factors derived from mesenchyme. Here, we report that in mice the secreted factor Fgf9 is expressed principally by mesenchyme and then mesothelium during early development, then subsequently by both mesothelium and rare epithelial cells by E12.5 and onwards. Global knockout of the

Assessing Clinical Social Workers’ Self-Efficacy Regarding Perinatal Mental Health Disorders, Ashley Sullivan

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation sought to explore social workers’ perceived levels of knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness of perinatal mental health. This study looked at how identifying as a parent, different social work licensures, and having additional training on perinatal mental health affect social workers' knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness responses. Utilizing a quantitative survey, this dissertation found having additional training on perinatal mental health to have a significant impact on social workers’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness.

Exploring social workers’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness of perinatal mental health allows for self-reflection of one's own ability to assist this vulnerable population. Continued research in this …

From Big Farm To Big Pharma: A Differential Equations Model Of Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella In Industrial Poultry Populations, Rilyn Mckallip Apr 2023

From Big Farm To Big Pharma: A Differential Equations Model Of Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella In Industrial Poultry Populations, Rilyn Mckallip

Honors Theses

Antibiotics are used in poultry production as prophylaxis, curative treatment, and growth promotion. The first use is as prophylaxis, or prevention of common bacterial diseases. The crowded conditions in concentrated animal feeding operations necessitate management of infectious disease to ensure overall animal health and the profitability of such operations. In these farms, between 20,000 and 125,000 birds are raised in shed-like enclosures [3], with an average of less than one square foot of space per chicken [34]. Antibiotics are currently used in chicken farms to manage and prevent common bacterial diseases such as respiratory and digestive tract infections, as well …

The Enigmatic Self: An Ongoing Exploration Of Literary Selfhood From The American Renaissance To Contemporary Young Adult Literature, Helene Leichter Apr 2023

The Enigmatic Self: An Ongoing Exploration Of Literary Selfhood From The American Renaissance To Contemporary Young Adult Literature, Helene Leichter

Honors Theses

Assuming the near impossible task of sorting through and delineating various conceptions of the self in and throughout literary and civil history, literary critic Irving Howe adopts a highly perceptive and profoundly analytical approach to the enigmatic individual. In the article quoted above, "The Self in Literature," Howe consolidates what he believes to be the most promising attempts at coding and decoding abstractions of the self across numerous literary, philosophical, and sociological texts. The success of Howe’s analysis lies in his ability to simultaneously embrace and scrutinize seemingly incompatible notions of bodily and spiritual discourse. With the knowledge that such …

Reflections: A Meditation On Ballet And Pain, Claire Madeline Silverman Apr 2023

Reflections: A Meditation On Ballet And Pain, Claire Madeline Silverman

Honors Theses

The defining details of the character of Giselle are that she loves to dance even though she knows it could kill her (for she has a frail heart), and that she is in love with a peasant boy named Loys, though she knows her mother dislikes him. She is defiant, determined to follow her desires.

Giselle wasn’t one of the ballets that stuck out to me when I was younger. I loved the Tchaikovsky ballets — Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker — and later Romeo and Juliet (Macmillan’s version) became my favorite. Giselle existed at my periphery. It’s …

Efficacy Of Tetris In Reducing Fear Response To Horror Films, Alivia Kelley Apr 2023

Efficacy Of Tetris In Reducing Fear Response To Horror Films, Alivia Kelley

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Experiencing horror on screen is a cathartic experience that employs the essential human emotion of fear. Many people are too afraid to watch horror movies. Viewing a horror movie is intended to invoke an acute fear response, but this response can extend for more than 90 minutes. Horror movies invoke a fear response that makes the sight on the screen indistinguishable from a real threat. This fear response can invoke PTSD-like trauma symptoms, such as flashbacks. Tetris has been used to alleviate these intrusive memories by overriding the traumatic visual stimulus with a visuospatial distraction increasing the cognitive load. Horror …

Culturally Responsive Curriculum And Achievement Gaps, Barbara Figueredo Apr 2023

Culturally Responsive Curriculum And Achievement Gaps, Barbara Figueredo

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The achievement gap is a phenomenon that has been observed throughout schools in the United States. It often describes and reveals disproportions in test scores and general academic achievement in students intersected with their race and socioeconomic status. In Florida, for example, The Florida Department of Education (2015) measured, as part of their “New School Grades Mode1” where one of their goals was to address the achievement gap, the percentage of student scoring a three or higher on core subject standardized testing in 4th grade students throughout the state. It shows the differences in the achievement of students taking these …

Advance Care Planning: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Gabrielle Alanna Harvey Apr 2023

Advance Care Planning: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Gabrielle Alanna Harvey

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Advance care planning (ACP) is a topic that can be difficult for patients and providers to discuss due to lack of time, knowledge, communication skills, and discomfort surrounding the subject (Barkley et al., 2019; Hafid et al., 2021; Halpert et al., 2022; Marin, 2022). Delayed or absent ACP discussions may lead to nonbeneficial care, increased healthcare costs, end of life suffering and increased post-death family distress (Halpert et al., 2022; O’Hanlon et al., 2018). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to increase the discussions and documentation regarding ACP in a family practice setting. The PICOT question guiding …

Migration Of Elk (Cervus Canadensis) And Barriers To Movement, Levi Watkins Apr 2023

Migration Of Elk (Cervus Canadensis) And Barriers To Movement, Levi Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

Movement patterns of animals are varied, complex, and can be influenced by environmental and anthropogenic factors. One form of animal movement, migration, is influenced by environmental factors that alter the timing, duration, intensity, and likelihood of migration. Additionally, features of the landscape, both natural and anthropogenic, can alter how animals move through their seasonal and home ranges. Movement patterns can be impeded or prevented by features such as railroads, rivers, and roads. Here we explore characteristics of elk (Cervus canadensis) migration by evaluating the strategies of migration exhibited and the factors that influence migration of elk in central and eastern …

Powerful Partnerships: Examining Home-School Engagement In The Virtual Setting, Joshua Scott-Pineda Apr 2023

Powerful Partnerships: Examining Home-School Engagement In The Virtual Setting, Joshua Scott-Pineda

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

Over the years, establishing, maintaining, and expanding partnerships with families has proven to be a challenging task. Although there have been legislative efforts to improve the situation, they have been ineffective. Researchers have identified two possible causes: inadequate communication, or low parent self-efficacy. Then, a global pandemic upended everything, and schools had to completely shift to remote option, prompting a need to reevaluate engagement strategies altogether. This project aimed to investigate the views of experts, examine the communication strategies implemented by skilled teachers, and propose small modifications that could enhance the bidirectional relationship between schools and families.

Wastewater Surveillance Of Sars-Cov-2 Genomic Populations On A Country-Wide Scale Through Targeted Sequencing, Florencia Cancela, Natalia Ramos, Davida S. Smyth, Et Al. Apr 2023

Wastewater Surveillance Of Sars-Cov-2 Genomic Populations On A Country-Wide Scale Through Targeted Sequencing, Florencia Cancela, Natalia Ramos, Davida S. Smyth, Et Al.

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

SARS-CoV-2 surveillance of viral populations in wastewater samples is recognized as a useful tool for monitoring epidemic waves and boosting health preparedness. Next generation sequencing of viral RNA isolated from wastewater is a convenient and cost-effective strategy to understand the molecular epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 and provide insights on the population dynamics of viral variants at the community level. However, in low- and middle-income countries, isolated groups have performed wastewater monitoring and data has not been extensively shared in the scientific community. Here we report the results of monitoring the co-circulation and abundance of variants of concern (VOCs) of SARS-CoV-2 in …

Preoperative Frailty And Adverse Outcomes Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery In Us Veterans, Salil V. Deo, Yakov Elgudin

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Contemporary guidelines emphasize the value of incorporating frailty into clinical decision-making regarding revascularization strategies for coronary artery disease. Yet, there are limited data describing the association between frailty and longer-term mortality among coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study (2016–2020, 40 VA medical centers) of US veterans nationwide that underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Frailty was quantified by the Veterans Administration Frailty Index (VA-FI), which applies the cumulative deficit method to render a proportion of 30 pertinent diagnosis codes. Patients were classified as non-frail (VA-FI ≤ 0.1), pre-frail (0.1 < VA-FI ≤ 0.2), or frail (VA-FI > 0.2). We used …

Physiological Signals And The Effects On Prediction Of Future Blood Glucose Values In A Deep Learning Model, Andrew Rearson Apr 2023

Physiological Signals And The Effects On Prediction Of Future Blood Glucose Values In A Deep Learning Model, Andrew Rearson

Theses

Diabetes is a chronic disease that currently has no cure. However, in the last decade, life- changing technology for people with diabetes has advanced primarily due to new sensors that continuously measure glucose. Individuals with diabetes manually use this data for diabetes management, but the artificial intelligence community has seen the increase in data as an opportunity to work towards automating diabetes control. The project developed deep-learning neural networks incorporating blood glucose measurements measured by a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and physical activity data from a wearable health sensor (WHS) to predict future glucose values and compare how different configuration …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

S-Adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) analogs are adaptable tools for studying and therapeutically inhibiting SAM-dependent methyltransferases (MTases). Some MTases play significant roles in host–pathogen interactions, one of which is Clostridioides difficile-specific DNA adenine MTase (CamA). CamA is needed for efficient sporulation and alters persistence in the colon. To discover potent and selective CamA inhibitors, we explored modifications of the solvent-exposed edge of the SAM adenosine moiety. Starting from the two parental compounds (6e and 7), we designed an adenosine analog (11a) carrying a 3-phenylpropyl moiety at the adenine N6-amino group, and a 3-(cyclohexylmethyl guanidine)-ethyl moiety at the …

One Small Step For A Writing Center: Adapting To Reimagined Spaces, Jacqueline Borchert Apr 2023

One Small Step For A Writing Center: Adapting To Reimagined Spaces, Jacqueline Borchert

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations

Due to innovations in higher education, writing centers are increasingly moving away from the stereotypical, make-shift classroom to a variety of innovative spaces. This presentation uses the stories and voices of the tutors whose experience and development are affected by space to acknowledge the dynamic shift many writing centers are undergoing. Within the context of one-to-one peer tutorials in spaces not owned by any individual campus unit, this presentation provides considerations to increase understanding of how these new spaces shape tutors’ interactions with people and the space itself.

Is There Causation In Fundamental Physics? New Insights From Process Matrices And Quantum Causal Modelling, Emily Adlam Apr 2023

Is There Causation In Fundamental Physics? New Insights From Process Matrices And Quantum Causal Modelling, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this article we set out to understand the significance of the process matrix formalism and the quantum causal modelling programme for ongoing disputes about the role of causation in fundamental physics. We argue that the process matrix programme has correctly identified a notion of ‘causal order’ which plays an important role in fundamental physics, but this notion is weaker than the common-sense conception of causation because it does not involve asymmetry. We argue that causal order plays an important role in grounding more familiar causal phenomena. Then we apply these conclusions to the causal modelling programme within quantum foundations, …
