I’Ll Be Goldenrod And You’Ll Be Aster: The Case For Revolutionizing Western Methods Of Teaching Using Indigenous Ontologies, Joanna Logerfo
Master's Theses
An interesting facet of living as a human in the 21st century is contending with the end of the world. It’s been imagined in a thousand ways over the past twenty years. Will it be zombies? Aliens? An AI revolution? Or will it perhaps be something more mundane, more “down-to-Earth”? The floods, the droughts, the famines, and all the rest of the cataclysmic global events that occur every year have taken center stage in the world-ending debate, parading under a name as threatening and expansive as the Boogeyman: climate change. A recent article from NPR covered the United Nations’ 2022 …

Using Cesium-137 To Determine Sedimentation Patterns In Two Proglacial Lakes - Lago Argentino, Argentina, And Lake Josephine, Montana, Usa, Louis Miller
Geology Honors Projects
Glaciers are a key driver of bedrock erosion and sediment transport in alpine settings, and subsequent sediment deposition in proglacial lakes records glacial retreat, subglacial erosion rates, and other evidence of environmental change, like wildfires. Sedimentation in these proglacial lakes can reflect a variety of processes and characteristics such as glacier and lake size, proximity to the glacier, depositional patterns, other sources of sediment in the basin, and summer melt rates. Accurate dating of lake sediments in glacial systems can be challenging, particularly on sub-millennial timescales due to limited terrestrial organic matter in these environments. Atmospheric fallout of cesium-137 from …

Hakoah Wien: Kraft Als (Ver)Einigung Und Siedlung Der Unbeständigen Post/Modernen Identität, Owen N. Sayre
German Studies Honors Projects
The Sport Club and in particular football team Hakoah Wien is one of the best known examples in its time for contemporary theorists interested in analyzing the austrian-jewish identity of the 1920s. However there are many developments in austrian studies such as “jewish difference,” “co-constitutionality,” “the spatial turn” and “decolonization.” What, in this context, does it mean for a sports club to materially propagate the ideas of a liberatory religious and national identity, while representing an oppressive austrian identity on the world stage? This question has a lot to do with the concrete history of property rights and jewish oppression …
Through The Looking Glass: Investigating Incivility Through A Cognitive Process Lens, Melissa Sorenson
Through The Looking Glass: Investigating Incivility Through A Cognitive Process Lens, Melissa Sorenson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Experiencing incivility at work is a common phenomenon that individuals encounter. The effects of experiencing incivility are not bound to the workplace and continue to negatively impact individuals after they leave work. However, little is known about the mechanisms which transmit the experience of incivility at work to a person’s non-work domain. One such mechanisms that may be associated with the negative impact of incivility at work in the nonwork domain is depletion, which represents a reduced state of cognitive impact. Additionally, the use of active coping mechanisms may buffer the effects of experienced incivility on depletion. In this study, …

Gpr-160 Receptor Signaling In The Dorsal Vagal Complex Of Male Rats Modulates Meal Microstructure And Cart-Mediated Hypophagia, Marcos J. Sanchez-Navarro, Tito Borner, Benjamin C. Reiner, Richard C. Crist, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten, Lauren Stein, Matthew R. Hayes
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
The g-protein coupled receptor GPR-160, recently identified as a putative receptor for the cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide, shows abundant expression in the energy-balance control nuclei, including the dorsal vagal complex (DVC). However, its physiological role in the control of food intake has yet to be fully explored. Here, we performed a virally mediated, targeted knockdown (KD) of Gpr160 in the DVC of male rats to evaluate its physiological role in control of feeding. Our results indicate that DVC Gpr160 KD affects meal microstructure. Specifically, DVC Gpr160 KD animals consumed more frequent, but shorter meals during the dark phase …
Poverty, Flooding & Grassroots Organizing: An Analysis Of The War On Poverty & The 1977 Flood In Central Appalachia, Brooklyn Lile
Poverty, Flooding & Grassroots Organizing: An Analysis Of The War On Poverty & The 1977 Flood In Central Appalachia, Brooklyn Lile
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There is a long history of environmental exploitation and disastrous flooding in Central Appalachia. The region has long been plagued by exploitative practices such as strip mining and mountaintop removal which have stripped vegetation from land, leading to more disastrous floods and more frequent floods. With repeated floods comes a vicious cycle of substantial damage and destruction, as well as inadequate time and resources for full recovery before the next flood strikes. Consequently, floods and poverty have been cyclical, interlinked, and inseparable. Thus, this paper explores the relationship between poverty, flooding, and relief by analyzing the connections between the War …

The Efficacy Of Neuroleptics On Mental Health Disorders, Rathea Hersi
The Efficacy Of Neuroleptics On Mental Health Disorders, Rathea Hersi
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
Mental health disorders affect a lot of people in the world and can be triggered by a wide variety of reasons. The treatment of mental health disorders varies based on the type of disorder one is dealing with, as well as the symptoms that each portrays. While history has changed how people view mental health disorders, it also shows that the models of treatment used have not always been beneficial to the wellness of human beings. Research shows that there are different ways in which mental health disorders affect the brain, which means that a study of the different parts …
Behavior Determined By Biological Processes, Alyss Kerl
Behavior Determined By Biological Processes, Alyss Kerl
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
The paper is about the condition known as Human Colony Collapse Disorder (HCCD), which has been seen in several communities around the world, is characterized by a sharp fall in population, social cohesion, and economic stability. This study seeks to investigate the root causes and potential remedies for HCCD. The well-known Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which affects honeybee populations and causes entire hives to collapse owing to a confluence of variables including environmental stressors, illness, and inadequate nutrition, is comparable to HCCD in certain ways. This project's goal is to look at probable HCCD causes and contributing variables, as well …
Black Fatherhood: A Critical Component For Urban African American Student Success, Cameron Steel
Black Fatherhood: A Critical Component For Urban African American Student Success, Cameron Steel
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
A multitude of studies express that father involvement has an impact on student achievement and learning outcomes for urban African American students (Palm & Fagan, 2008). Although biological fathers are extremely vital to our community, a biological connection between a parental figure and their student is not essential to these correlational outcomes. The absence of fathers in the urban African American community has had a negative impact on students' self-esteem, academic efficacy, and general livelihood. Realistically, it is not a viable solution to place fathers in homes or force them to stay and remain active participants in their child's K-12 …

Inadequacies In Nutritional Counseling In The Perinatal Population, Tiffany Fry
Inadequacies In Nutritional Counseling In The Perinatal Population, Tiffany Fry
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Obesity continues to increase at unprecedented levels and warrants immediate provider attention at the perinatal level to improve the health of the present and future generations. Reduction of this condition can reduce risk factors leading to morbidity and mortality. Guidelines exist for the prevention and management of obesity, yet little focus is placed on prevention in the perinatal population. Lack of consistent and healthy lifestyle in the perinatal population has the potential to not only place the mother at risk for obesity but also her unborn child. The overall purpose of the scholarly project is to identify any potential …
Differences In Crowding And Stress Experienced By Emergency Medicine Physicians Prior To And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Caroline Grace Barrows
Differences In Crowding And Stress Experienced By Emergency Medicine Physicians Prior To And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Caroline Grace Barrows
Honors College Theses
Burnout in Emergency Medicine physicians has become an increasingly apparent problem in the United States. This psychological syndrome is a result of emotional exhaustion, detachment, and an overwhelming sense of ineffectiveness (Maslach & Leiter, 2016). Work demands within the emergency department are likely to produce chronic exposure to stressors. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic likely contributed to amplifying workplace stressors, suggesting that the rate at which burnout developed was elevated. In the present study, data were collected from Emergency Medicine physicians at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina prior to the start of and during the COVID-19 …
Identification Of Sva-Mediated 3’ And 5’ Transductions In Human Genome Sequences, Emily C. Golba
Identification Of Sva-Mediated 3’ And 5’ Transductions In Human Genome Sequences, Emily C. Golba
Honors College Theses
Transposable elements (TEs) are sequences of DNA that can move, or transpose, within a genome. Retrotransposons are TEs that propagate via a “copy and paste” mechanism where the elements are transposed to a new genomic location via an RNA intermediate. Short interspersed element (SINE)-VNTR-Alu elements (SVAs) are non-autonomous retrotransposons that use long interspersed element 1 proteins to mobilize. SVAs are currently active in the human genome and often are characterized by the mobilization of sequences adjacent to the 3’ and 5’ ends of insertions, known as transduction events (TDs). TDs were a focus of this study due to their contribution …
Investigating The Role Of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes In Triazole Drug Efficacy And Toxicity In Whole Organism Zebrafish Model, Heather Cosh
Investigating The Role Of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes In Triazole Drug Efficacy And Toxicity In Whole Organism Zebrafish Model, Heather Cosh
Honors College Theses
Invasive fungal infections account for nearly 1.5 million deaths a year and therefore are considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The first line of therapy towards these infections are antifungal drugs in the triazole class such as voriconazole, posaconazole, itraconazole, and isavuconazole. However, these antifungal drug therapies fail in a large number of patients and can produce toxic side effects, therefore increasing the risk of mortality worldwide. While prior research has demonstrated the efficacy of these drugs in mitigating fungal growth in vitro, it is unclear why these drugs fail to protect patients infected with fungal …
