Function Of Septin Proteins In Cryptococcus Neoformans In Cell Wall And Plasma Membrane Integrity And Homeostasis, Emma Hatchell May 2023

Function Of Septin Proteins In Cryptococcus Neoformans In Cell Wall And Plasma Membrane Integrity And Homeostasis, Emma Hatchell

Honors College Theses

Cryptococcus neoformans is a pathogenic basidiomycetous yeast that causes meningitis in immunocompromised patients. This lethal fungus is sometimes referred to as the “sugar coated killer” due to its polysaccharide capsule. It is estimated that 152,000 cases of cryptococcal infection occur each year and result in 112,000 deaths. The ability of C. neoformans to adapt to host temperature is a main factor responsible for virulence. Septins are conserved filament-forming GTPases that are confirmed to be involved in cytokinesis and morphogenesis and have been implicated in heat stress response and virulence of C. neoformans. C. neoformans genome encodes four septins, Cdc3, …

Risk-Based Decision-Making Modeling For Wastewater Pipes, Sai Nethra Betgeri May 2023

Risk-Based Decision-Making Modeling For Wastewater Pipes, Sai Nethra Betgeri

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation research work described here has three primary objectives under risk-based decision making. (1) The development of a comprehensive sewer pipe condition rating model that incorporates many environmental, structural, and hydraulic parameters. (2) The development of a sewer pipe deterioration model used to predict future overall condition states of the pipe, as well as determining the probability of failure at any given age of the pipe. (3) The development of a comprehensive consequence of failure model that assesses the consequence of sewer pipe failure using economic, social, and environmental cost factors.

The Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) was …

Mother Goddess As Mother Nature, Elizabeth Ungar May 2023

Mother Goddess As Mother Nature, Elizabeth Ungar

Senior Theses

This paper analyzes the connection between the Ancient Mother Goddess and the modern EcoFeminist movement by illustrating similar traits and symbolic images that they share. I first examine how far back the mother figure was praised in human history, and how images of the feminine body connect to the nurturing aspect of our Earth in Paleolithic times. I then analyze the Mother Goddess figure through three ancient religious Goddesses; the Hindu Goddess Devi and all of her embodiments, the Ancient Egyptian Goddess Isis, and the mother goddess Gaia in Greek mythology.

Animal Agriculture Is The Missing Piece In Climate Change Media Coverage, Coni Arévalo, Jo Anderson May 2023

Animal Agriculture Is The Missing Piece In Climate Change Media Coverage, Coni Arévalo, Jo Anderson

Agriculture

For many years now, climate researchers have been warning that the world can’t meet its Paris Agreement climate goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C without reducing meat consumption. Multiple studies have affirmed that between 11.1 and 19.6% of global emissions come from meat and dairy production, and leading global food and climate agencies are also in agreement, recommending that people, particularly those in the Global North, reduce meat consumption in favor of a plant-rich diet.

The effects of animal agriculture on the environment and climate are vast: It is a leading cause of deforestation, it’s responsible …

Reducing The Vulnerability Of Electric Power Infrastructure Against Natural Disasters By Promoting Distributed Generation, Gasser G. Ali, Islam H. El-Adaway, Charles Sims, J. Scott Holladay, Chien Fei Chen May 2023

Reducing The Vulnerability Of Electric Power Infrastructure Against Natural Disasters By Promoting Distributed Generation, Gasser G. Ali, Islam H. El-Adaway, Charles Sims, J. Scott Holladay, Chien Fei Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Natural disasters cause significant damage to the electrical power infrastructure every year. Therefore, there is a crucial need to reduce the vulnerability of the electric power grid against natural disasters. Distributed generation (DG) represents small-scale decentralized power generation that can help reduce the vulnerability of the grid, among many other benefits. Examples of DG include small-scale photo-voltaic (PV) systems. Accordingly, the goal of this paper is to investigate the benefits of DG in reducing the vulnerability of the electric power infrastructure by mitigating against the impact of natural disasters on transmission lines. This was achieved by developing a complex system-of-systems …
