Not So Set In Stone: A Digital History Of The Macalester College Campus, Andie Walker May 2023

Not So Set In Stone: A Digital History Of The Macalester College Campus, Andie Walker

Individually Designed Interdepartmental Major Honors Project

College communities are constantly in flux, as students typically remain in school for only four years. However, parts of the physical environment of a college campus might last for centuries. This project investigates the evolution of Macalester College’s campus and asks the following questions: What has guided the design decisions for new buildings and structures at Macalester throughout its history? How have people interacted with, manipulated, and potentially subverted these spaces and places? How is settler colonialism physically embodied at Macalester? These questions have illuminated the ways that people have attempted to control the space and place that makes up …

Market Concentration And Political Outcomes, Xueyan Cao May 2023

Market Concentration And Political Outcomes, Xueyan Cao

Economics Honors Projects

U.S. industries have become more consolidated over the past decades. This trend has raised concerns regarding its impact on society. This paper delves into the connection between market concentration and political outcomes. By integrating lobbying data from the Center for Responsive Politics with industry-wide economic data from 2003 to 2019, I utilize several multivariate models to investigate the link between concentration and lobbying expenditures at the aggregate U.S. industry level. I also conduct three representative industry case studies: commercial banks, airlines, and general merchandise stores. The results are mixed. While there is a negative association between market concentration and lobbying …

Rising Costs Of Universities And The Impact On Teaching Effectiveness And Student Outcomes, Patrick Hanna May 2023

Rising Costs Of Universities And The Impact On Teaching Effectiveness And Student Outcomes, Patrick Hanna

English (MA) Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to track the rising costs of attending higher education institutions and the professional development of professors compared to secondary and primary educators. While university and college administrations around the United States enjoyed exponential growth in pay, faculty and staff pay has remained stagnant for over 40 years. The increase in costs of attendance despite the stagnant pay for professors highlights the diminishing return on investment for attaining a higher education degree. By examining the concepts of education production function and extrapolating the findings to apply to postsecondary institutions, the lapse in educator development comes …

Enhancing Station Level Direct-Demand Models With Multi-Scalar Accessibility Indicators, Luis Enrique Ramos-Santiago

Open Access Publishing Fund

Direct-demand models (DDM) are increasingly being used for a diversity of transit research and practice purposes. Yet few station-level DDM studies have explored the use of composite indicators of metropolitan accessibility in predicting demand. After all, provision of access to metropolitan destinations is one of the main goals of rapid-transit systems. Furthermore, to this author’s knowledge no study has explored potential interactions with local-level accessibility indicators that are typically included in station level transit DDMs. This study explores these possibilities and uses Los Angeles multimodal rapid-transit network as a representative case study of a system that operates in a dispersed …

However, the preweaning performance of the crossbreed of Katahdin (Kt) and East Friesian (EF) in Missouri still needs to be characterized. So, this preliminary study aimed to evaluate the preweaning performance of lambs (1/2EF x 1/2Kt) from Katahdin ewes crossbred with East Friesian Ram. Forty-three lambs born in Spring 2022 from 27 of second lambing Katahdin ewes and one-year East Friesian ram were weighted and tagged at birth, after five days of colostrum, were weighed every …

Temporal, Phenotypic, And Quantitative Characterization Of Thyroid Infiltrating Mononuclear Cells During Development Of Spontaneous Autoimmune Thyroiditis In Obese Strain Chickens, Katelyn M. Clark May 2023

Temporal, Phenotypic, And Quantitative Characterization Of Thyroid Infiltrating Mononuclear Cells During Development Of Spontaneous Autoimmune Thyroiditis In Obese Strain Chickens, Katelyn M. Clark

Poultry Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Obese strain (OS) of chickens spontaneously develops autoimmune thyroiditis and is a well-established biomedical model for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in humans. Both conditions are characterized by the infiltration of the thyroid glands with mononuclear cells resulting in destruction of the thyroid tissue and impairment of the thyroid’s endocrinological functions. Past studies have described mononuclear cell infiltration in thyroids of the OS chickens, but the time-course, cell composition, and relative amounts of the various mononuclear cells infiltrating the thyroids has not been well defined. In this project, the mononuclear cell infiltrate was characterized phenotypically and quantitatively in OS chickens over the …

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Studying DNA interactions is advantageous to developments in the medical field since DNA and its interactions affect our health greatly. In addition, it is important to understand how the bendability of DNA depends on metal ions, which are essential for various fundamental processes in cells. In this work, we investigate the use of FRET and self-assembled bent DNA molecules to quantify DNA interactions with magnesium ions. We measured that the FRET efficiency increased at higher concentrations of magnesium ions. We also ran simulations to further understand the mechanisms. These observations show that magnesium ions increase the stability and flexibility of …

Reworking Hospitality: The Social Practices Of Arab Immigrants In Granada, Spain, Sarah Falknor

World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses

“Right now, you and me sitting here, this is hospitality.” My eyes darted left and right to the surrounding street for a moment as I took in the feeling of a sticky, metal chair against my legs and thirst settling in my throat. This was not the kind of Arab hospitality I had read about in books -- the extravagant kind that absolutely involves food and three days of accommodations before the hosts can ask the reason a guest is in their home. This felt to me like exactly what it was, a random interview with a stranger conducted in …

Outreach To Distance Learning Faculty: A Scoping Review, Christina Hillman, Lucinda Ward May 2023

Outreach To Distance Learning Faculty: A Scoping Review, Christina Hillman, Lucinda Ward

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

This scoping review examines the techniques used by academic librarians for outreach to distance learning faculty From 533 initial records, librarians included 16 articles and identified five recurring themes: in-person visits, synchronous workshops, electronic communication, branding and personalization, and campus partnerships. Despite the prevalence of literature about outreach and marketing in academic libraries, there has been little research on connecting with distance education faculty. This review highlights the need for continued exploration of this topic, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to blur what it means to be a distance learning faculty.

Improper Ferroelectricity In Ultrathin Hexagonal Ferrites Films, Xin Li, Yu Yun, X. S. Xu May 2023

Improper Ferroelectricity In Ultrathin Hexagonal Ferrites Films, Xin Li, Yu Yun, X. S. Xu

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Suppression of ferroelectricity in ultrathin films of improper ferroelectric hexagonal ferrites or manganites has been attributed to the effect of interfacial clamping; however, the quantitative understanding and related phenomenological model are still lacking. In this work, we report on the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition of epitaxial h-ScFeO3 films with different thicknesses through in situ reflection highenergy electron diffraction. Based on the interfacial clamping model and the Landau theory, we show that the thickness-dependence of the ferroelectric Curie temperature can be understood in terms of the characteristic length of an interfacial clamping layer and the bulk Curie temperature. Furthermore, we found …

The Role Of Cytochrome P450 2e1 In Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion Injury And Reactive Oxygen Species Formation, Nouf Alwadei May 2023

The Role Of Cytochrome P450 2e1 In Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion Injury And Reactive Oxygen Species Formation, Nouf Alwadei

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

The mechanisms of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which occurs during liver transplantation or surgery, are poorly understood. The central pathophysiological phenomenon of this injury is the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Recent studies suggest that P450 enzymes may contribute to ROS generation, which may occur through their uncoupling and/or release of heme and iron after their degradation. Among P450 enzymes, CYP2E1 is unique because it is considered a leaky enzyme, producing significant ROS through uncoupling in the absence of substrates, accelerating its own degradation and reducing its half-life. In this dissertation, we generated and characterized a HepG2 cell line …
