Queer Representation In The Horror Genre: An Analysis Of Queer Stereotypes, Makenna N. Lambert May 2023

Queer Representation In The Horror Genre: An Analysis Of Queer Stereotypes, Makenna N. Lambert

Honors Theses

Queer representation has been present across all genres of film since the dawn of filmmaking. Much of the early representation of queer identities originated in the horror genre, specifically during the time of the Motion Picture Production Code (1934-1968). However, many negative stereotypes and tropes still common in media today originated in this time period. Films like Dracula’s Daughter and Bride of Frankenstein included stereotypes like the overly effeminate, weak gay man, the aggressive, ugly lesbian, and the concept that queer people are predatory. Modern-day horror films have started to stray away from these harmful tropes, including more well-rounded and …

Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim May 2023

Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Art therapy is an increasingly popular approach for addressing trauma and anger in clinical settings. This literature review explores the connections between art therapy, trauma, gender, and anger, drawing on a range of studies and theoretical perspectives. Background is provided on the history of anger within the context of societal institutions, interpersonal power dynamics, psychiatric nosology, and social justice movements. The review concludes that art therapy is ideally suited as a trauma-informed approach to addressing anger in the therapeutic setting. This is due to the unique opportunities that art making provides for helping individuals express and process their emotions nonverbally, …

A Modeling Framework To Develop Materials With Improved Noise And Vibration Performance For Electric Vehicles, Javad Baqersad, Seyed Jamaleddin Mostafavi Yazdi, Seongchan Pack, Foroogh Rouhollahi May 2023

A Modeling Framework To Develop Materials With Improved Noise And Vibration Performance For Electric Vehicles, Javad Baqersad, Seyed Jamaleddin Mostafavi Yazdi, Seongchan Pack, Foroogh Rouhollahi

Mechanical Engineering Publications

The automotive and aerospace industries increasingly use lightweight materials to improve performance while reducing fuel consumption. Lightweight materials are frequently used in electric vehicles (EVs). However, using these materials can increase airborne and structure-borne noise. Furthermore, EV noise occurs at high frequencies, and conventional materials have small damping. Thus, there is an increasing need for procedures that help design new materials and coatings to reduce the transferred and radiated noise at desired frequencies. This study pioneered new techniques for microstructure modeling of coated and uncoated materials with improved noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. This work uses the microstructure of …

Why Understanding Food Choice Is Crucial To Transform Food Systems For Human And Planetary Health, Krystal K. Rampalli, Christine E. Blake Ph.D., Rd, Edward A. Frongillo Ph.D., Joseph Montoya

Faculty Publications

What, how and why people eat has long been understood to be important for human health, but until recently, has not been recognised as an essential facet of climate change and its effects on planetary health. The global climate change and diet-related health crises occurring are connected to food systems, food environments and consumer food choices. Calls to transform food systems for human and planetary health highlight the importance of understanding individual food choice. Understanding what, how and why people eat the way they do is crucial to successful food systems transformations that achieve both human and planetary health goals. …

The Influence Of Rejection On Life And Health Outcomes Among Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Adults In The U.S., Trye Mica Price May 2023

The Influence Of Rejection On Life And Health Outcomes Among Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Adults In The U.S., Trye Mica Price

Theses and Dissertations

Rejection is a widespread and problematic issue that impacts transgender and gender non-conforming individuals throughout their lives. Transgender people are likely to experience gender-based rejection from their families, at school during their youth, from employers and co-workers, and religious organizations. Past research has shown that rejection from certain people and organizations can influence outcomes such as homelessness, sex work engagement, and issues with psychological distress. For instance, familial rejection has been shown to be a consistent factor associated with homelessness and mental health issues among gender minorities. However, there is limited knowledge on how school, workplace, and religious rejection can …

A Phenomenographic Study To Explore The Perceptions And Experiences Of Diversity Directors In Council Of Educational Standards And Accountability Member Schools, Joel Hazard May 2023

A Phenomenographic Study To Explore The Perceptions And Experiences Of Diversity Directors In Council Of Educational Standards And Accountability Member Schools, Joel Hazard

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Dissertations

Currently, a scarcity of research exists on Diversity Directors in faith-based independent Christian schools. There also remains a lack of empirical data that explains how independent schools, faith-based or not, can take action to diversify their student population, supporting students of color, and how they can measure progress toward these goals. Despite this current lack of research, there has been a significant increase in the number of full-time Diversity Director positions in faith-based independent Christian schools. Diversity Directors continue to see their role grow and become more complex as emerging issues and increased diversity enter their school community.

The purpose …

Occurrence Of Radionuclides And Hazardous Elements In The Transboundary River Basin Kyrgyzstan–Kazakhstan, Mariya A. Severinenko, Vladimir P. Solodukhin, Bekmamat M. Djenbaev, The National Academy Of Science Of The Kyrgyz Republic G. Lennik, Baktiyar T. Zholboldiev, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Important for irrigation, the transboundary river basin between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan is vulnerable to geochemical and anthropogenic sources of pollution. The use of water use indices, together with measurements of the elemental and radionuclide composition of the water and bottom sediments, provides a means for evaluating the continued use of the water from this region. Recent monitoring shows the highest concentrations of hazardous contaminants include lead and thorium contained in the bottom and banks of the Kichi-Kemin River. These contaminants are likely remnants of an accidental spill at the Aktyuz tailing dump in 1964. The specific activity of the Th-232 …

A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. This scenario predicts exotic B-meson decays into a baryon and a dark-sector antibaryon (ψD) with branching fractions accessible at B factories. We present a search for B→ΛψD decays using data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying B meson and requiring the presence of a single Λ baryon in the remaining particles. No significant signal is observed, and bounds on the B→Λψ …

Prevalence, Trends, And Predictors Of Domestic Violence Among Nigerian Women; An Analysis Using 2008, 2013 And 2018 Waves Of The Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (Ndhs), Nkemdilim Chukwueme

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Domestic violence (abbreviated DV for this study) among women in African settings is often considered a ‘family matter’ and requires limited external interference. This study aims to identify the national and regional prevalence, trend in prevalence rates, influencing factors in predicting domestic violence among Nigerian women, victims’ response in seeking help, and potential victim-centered digital solutions to addressing domestic violence. In Nigeria, little has been done to assess; a nationally representative prevalence of DV among Nigerian women in the last decade to see if there are changing trends in prevalence; extensively investigate the influence of socio-demographic factors in predicting DV …

Photodynamic Therapy Agents: The Power Of Mjöllnir To Eradicate Cancer, Sidney M. Hopper May 2023

Photodynamic Therapy Agents: The Power Of Mjöllnir To Eradicate Cancer, Sidney M. Hopper

Honors College Theses

After its discovery back in the 1900s, photosensitizers became a critical study for potential treatments and cures for medical issues, including cancer. It was discovered that porphyrins appeared to target and accumulate in proliferating cells, and to reach the cells, a certain wavelength of light with maximum absorbance associated with the porphyrin was necessary to achieve cell death. Photodynamic therapy involves making use of porphyrins or metalloporphyrins as activators when exposed to such light. When activated, these compounds generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as HO- or O2-, which can react with nucleic acids found in DNA and RNA. In …

How Did Healthcare Affordability Change For U.S. Adults With Intellectual Disability After The Implementation Of The Affordable Care Act?, Nastassia Vaitsiakhovich May 2023

How Did Healthcare Affordability Change For U.S. Adults With Intellectual Disability After The Implementation Of The Affordable Care Act?, Nastassia Vaitsiakhovich

Population Health Research Brief Series

Individuals with intellectual disabilities are marginalized in the United States and have worse health outcomes than their peers without disabilities. Lower socioeconomic status and a reliance on social welfare benefits and public health insurance programs often create barriers to access to care. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) aimed to make healthcare services more accessible. This brief summarizes the findings from a recent study that examined patterns in healthcare affordability under the ACA or noninstitutionalized adults ages 18-64 with intellectual disabilities. The findings suggest that the ACA increased the likelihood that adults with intellectual disabilities would access medical, specialty, …

The Association Of Dementia Caregiver Employment With Sleep Quality: Does Being A Spouse Matter?, Jasnoor Kaur

Honors College Theses

Background: Family caregivers for a person living with dementia (PLwD) can experience stress and burden which may relate to health consequences such as poor sleep quality. This study aimed to 1) examine the association between caregiver employment status and sleep quality and 2) understand how this association may be moderated by the relationship of the caregiver to the PLwD.

Methods: A sample of primary caregivers for a PLwD (N = 100) were interviewed in person in 2017. A linear regression with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score as the outcome and employment status as the key predictor, and …
