A Pastor's Fine Art Collection: From Down-To-Earth To World-Renowned, Lily Hampton May 2023

A Pastor's Fine Art Collection: From Down-To-Earth To World-Renowned, Lily Hampton

Undergraduate Theses

Art collecting and the methods of acquiring art are constantly changing with the times. While some world-class collections are filled with a wide range of art types-- paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs--the public has little knowledge of how these pieces are chosen and accumulated. Competition in the art scene is undoubtedly a factor, but an argument can be made about whether some collectors choose works for highly personal reasons. The subject of this thesis is a local fine art collection, the Mary and Al Shands Collection of the Great Meadows estate based in Crestwood, Kentucky. This stunning in-home art gallery is …

Transcendence: Exploring The Connections Between Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Identities And Experiences Of Nature Through Art, Mc Jackson

Undergraduate Theses

“Transcendence: Exploring the connections between transgender/gender non-conforming identities and experiences of nature through art” is the written portion of a creative thesis revolving around an immersive art installation and short film. Transcendence, the installation, was created to promote connection by exploring the overlap between transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) experiences and experiences of nature. Part of this installation is a short film of interviews conducted with transgender and GNC individuals about nature, their gender experiences, and the transcendent nature of the two. The written thesis analyzes existing literature on nature as a restorative, therapeutic, spiritual setting, offers insight into …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Hunger As A Weapon, Tad Schnaufer, David Himmelgreen May 2023

Gnsi Decision Brief: Hunger As A Weapon, Tad Schnaufer, David Himmelgreen

GNSI Decision Briefs

Overview

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs places physiological needs as the foundation of all others.i The needs of food, water, and shelter are referred to as objects indispensable to survival (OIS). A person will think of little else until these basic needs are met, hence the power OIS have over populations. The concept of hunger as a weapon dates to the beginning of written history with Homer’s Iliad describing the siege of Troy. In war, military leaders often consider foodstuffs as it relates to their war effort while analyzing ways to use this basic need against their foe. As the quote …

An Analysis Of The Higher-Order Thinking Requirements Of An End-Of-Course Ela Assessment, Timothy J. Dowd May 2023

An Analysis Of The Higher-Order Thinking Requirements Of An End-Of-Course Ela Assessment, Timothy J. Dowd

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Higher-order thinking has been promoted in the American classroom for several decades. Summative assessments have the dual role of ascertaining the student’s proficiency and also providing them with opportunities to employ various cognitive behaviors and to offer them with opportunities to demonstrate their ability to think in complex ways. The creators of one such summative assessment, the North Carolina End-of-Course English II Test, claim that their test provides up to 40% of its items at the higher-order of thinking. The purpose of this convergent mixed-methods study was to investigate how the language found in the released items on the North …

Nonprofit Employee Work Engagement: A Ripple Effect Impacting Communities, Isabel Raymundo May 2023

Nonprofit Employee Work Engagement: A Ripple Effect Impacting Communities, Isabel Raymundo

Nonprofit and NGO Studies Student Projects

The nonprofit sector is experiencing a growth in professionalization, and as such it is important to pay attention to keeping employees engaged at work to be able to compete in a competitive job market. As most nonprofit employees do direct service work, keeping employees engaged should be a primary focus since the sector is known for burnout. Not only is work engagement essential for employee retention, but due to the intensity of the work to meet the mission of the organization, keeping employees engaged is better for the overall health of the organization. If employees are engaged in their work, …

Improving Primary Care Based Post-Diagnostic Support For People Living With Dementia And Carers: Developing A Complex Intervention Using The Theory Of Change, C Bamford, J Wilcock, G Brunskill, A Wheatley, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Background The need to improve support following a diagnosis of dementia is widely recognised, but it is unclear how this can best be achieved within UK health and social care systems. A task-shared and task-shifted approach has been recommended, but there is limited guidance on how to achieve this in practice. As part of a programme of research, we developed an intervention to enhance the role of primary care in post-diagnostic care and support for people living with dementia and carers. Methods We used the Theory of Change to develop a complex intervention informed by initial literature reviews and qualitative …

Patterns Of Antiseizure Medications Prescribing In People With Intellectual Disability And Epilepsy: A Narrative Review And Analysis, David Branford, James J. Sun, Lisa Burrows, Rohit Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

People with intellectual disabilities (PwID) have a bidirectional relationship with epilepsy. Nearly 25% of PwID have seizures and 30% people with epilepsy are thought to have a significant intellectual impairment. Furthermore, 70% of PwID are thought to have treatment-resistant epilepsy. In the United Kingdom, antiseizure medications (ASMs) are the second most widely prescribed psychotropic agent for PwID. However, it is unclear what the current evidence and patterns is on current prescribing of ASMs, including when and how a case is made to withdraw them. A narrative review along with an analysis of large-scale NHS Digital published data (2015–2020) on several …

Associations Between Cannabis Use, Polygenic Liability For Schizophrenia, And Cannabis-Related Experiences In A Sample Of Cannabis Users, Emma C Johnson, Sarah M C Colbert, Paul W Jeffries, Rebecca Tillman, Nicole R Karcher, Elliot C Nelson, Arpana Agrawal, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Risk for cannabis use and schizophrenia is influenced in part by genetic factors, and there is evidence that genetic risk for schizophrenia is associated with subclinical psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). Few studies to date have examined whether genetic risk for schizophrenia is associated with cannabis-related PLEs.

STUDY DESIGN: We tested whether measures of cannabis involvement and polygenic risk scores (PRS) for schizophrenia were associated with self-reported cannabis-related experiences in a sample ascertained for alcohol use disorders (AUDs), the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). We analyzed 4832 subjects (3128 of European ancestry and 1704 of African …

Navigating Political Discussions Online: The Role Safe Spaces Play In Women's Political Participation On Twitter, Ayla Oden May 2023

Navigating Political Discussions Online: The Role Safe Spaces Play In Women's Political Participation On Twitter, Ayla Oden

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study analyzes how women navigate political discussions online. Social media breeds high-conflict spaces where threats and incivility are more likely to persist. To avoid ad hominem attacks or harassment from online, male users, women may be more likely to use “safe spaces” online, including stereotypically feminine conversations regarding “women’s issues.” The purpose of this study is to analyze how women discuss politics online and whether there are differences in the issues discussed by men and women on Twitter. Using three studies, I examined these differences and their relationship to the threats women face online and their political behavior offline. …

New Insights Into The Paleovegetation Of The Ancient Underwater Forest Located In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Karla Lizarraga Garcia May 2023

New Insights Into The Paleovegetation Of The Ancient Underwater Forest Located In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Karla Lizarraga Garcia

Master's Theses

A well-preserved remnant of an ancient bald cypress forest (hereafter, Underwater Forest) constitutes the only known archive of a glacial refuge on the once exposed continental shelf of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. This forest existed around 41-72 yBP (MIS 3-5) according to the existing dating methods applied on previous studies. As the climate conditions and sea levels changed, the vegetation of this glacial refuge shifted from bald cypress forests to open marshes, altering the vegetation dynamics. The present research analyzed four new cores (21DF-5A, 21DF-5B, 15DF-6, and 16DF-3A), which provided additional insights into the vegetation that once existed in …

Destruction Or Disruption: Political Violence Inconsistencies In Liberation Movements, Julia Lemmon May 2023

Destruction Or Disruption: Political Violence Inconsistencies In Liberation Movements, Julia Lemmon

Honors Thesis

Political violence is seldom viewed as an appropriate means to achieving a goal. Despite extensive studies produced on the reasons for using political violence, the scholarly world fails to consider comparing why some groups choose violence while their counterparts do not. Why is violence such an attractive method to some organized political groups, but not to others? Drawing on case studies of liberation movements, I attempt to understand what impacts the outcome of political violence during these movements. This study cross examines the Algerian Independence War with India’s nonviolent independence movement and the nonviolent independence movement of East Timor with …

Antisemitic Rhetoric From Influential Individuals On Social Media During The Recent Rise Of Jewish Hate In The United States Of America, Jimmy Warshawsky, Jason Jarvis Ph.D.

Honors Thesis

Experts have said that in recent months, we have been living through the highest point in American antisemitism we've ever had. Much of this is because of certain very influential people like Donald Trump and Kanye West who have been spreading antisemitic tropes and conspiracies on the internet. In this paper, I will first discuss the history of antisemitism in America to give important and relevant context to my study. I will then explain the recent rise in antisemitism and address viewpoints from various experts and contributors on what, why, and how this is happening. I’ll go over each of …

Human Impacts On Erosion In Starved Rock State Park, Illinois, Usa, Savannah Leigh Thielbar May 2023

Human Impacts On Erosion In Starved Rock State Park, Illinois, Usa, Savannah Leigh Thielbar

Theses and Dissertations

State and National parks are some of the most visited wildlife areas within the United States, making local geologic features more susceptible to human-induced change. As more people visit these parks throughout the year, we see major impacts on the interactions between biological and geological processes. This study determines if human activity, through rock carvings, influence erosion within Starved Rock State Park and provides a new perspective on our compounding anthropogenic influence on Earth. Through natural stream and artificial human erosion, the base of the bedrock slope potentially changes at a much faster rate than the upper portion of the …

Long Non-Coding Rna Hsr-Omega Provides Scaffolding For The Nuclear Domain B-Body, Soobin An

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

The structural organization of the cell nucleus poses many intriguing questions. One of them is the organization of nuclear domains (ND), sharp-bordered nuclear compartments concentrating a range of nuclear proteins. In this study, we used the recently discovered B-body as a model to investigate the mechanisms governing the formation of NDs. The nuclear B-body forms in the cellular precursors of flight muscles in developing Drosophila pupae. Prior to myoblast fusion, the splicing factor Bruno (Bru) concentrates into a single, large B-body but transitions into multiple smaller speckles in a diffused nuclear pattern after the commencement of myogenesis. We hypothesized that …

Secondary Data Analysis: Predictors Of Employment Among Young Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Eduardo Santos Del Rosario May 2023

Secondary Data Analysis: Predictors Of Employment Among Young Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Eduardo Santos Del Rosario

Theses & Dissertations

Young adults with cerebral palsy have lower employment rates as compared to young adults in general, as they may be confronted with complex interactions between cognitive delays, physical impairments, activity limitations, participation challenges, and personal and/or societal barriers as they progress to adulthood. These challenges are clear, the solutions, less so. Understanding the predicting factors of employment is vital to future generations of this population. The purpose of this study is to identify predictor variables and examine the relationship of those variables to employment. It has explored existing Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA-911) data through the lens of the International Classification …

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

To evaluate a potentially valuable tool to study cancer progression and metastasis, we characterized a novel murine model composed of a parental oncogene-transformed embryonic fibroblast line and five cell lines isolated from progressively advanced tumors. Lines derived from distant metastases displayed significantly greater rates of motility, invasiveness, and extracellular acidification than lines derived from a primary tumor or local metastases. A comprehensive proteomic analysis of these cells showed numerous oncogenes to be upregulated and tumor suppressors to be downregulated in the advanced lines, and provided novel targets for future examination. The first cell line capable of extravasation displayed particularly high …

Why Education Matters: Understanding Islamophobia In The United States, Cintya Felix May 2023

Why Education Matters: Understanding Islamophobia In The United States, Cintya Felix

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Since 9/11, there has been a significant increase in anti-Muslim racism which can be linked to misinformation, misconception, and stereotypes reinforced by a lack of an educational upbringing. In this paper, I examine the extent to which an individual's education level in the United States contributes to Islamophobia. Using an original data set of responses to the questions in the Chapman University Survey of American Fears (CSAF), I find a moderately strong relationship between the highest level of school an individual has completed or the highest degree they have received, and the degree to which they are afraid of Muslims. …

This piece of art is a short film about a girl who returns to her old high school to become an assistant football coach due to struggling to find her identity outside of sports. Over the last several years, we have seen many women play very significant roles in football, which is primarily a male dominated sport. This film demonstrates an accurate depiction of the challenges women may face when they work in a position that is superior in a male dominated field. Additionally, the film also displays the struggles that athletes often face when they retire from a sport, …

Lwir Spectral Variability Integration And Improvements To An Earth Observing Statistical Performance Model, Runchen Zhao May 2023

Lwir Spectral Variability Integration And Improvements To An Earth Observing Statistical Performance Model, Runchen Zhao

Theses

Remote sensing systems can be used to identify objects without physical contact. In hyperspectral remote sensing systems, pixels from a 3D hypercube can be described as a one-dimensional spectra. This one-dimensional spectrum can contain information about surface reflectance and emissivity variation as a function of wavelength, and is often thought of as the materials spectral signature or fingerprint. This spectral signature can be used in applications such as spectral target detection. To study the spectral signatures variation and its impact on target detection, for example, a parameter trade- off study is often needed. In this research, a full-spectrum spectral imaging …

Suprathreshold Auditory Processes In Listeners With Normal Audiograms But Extended High-Frequency Hearing Loss, Srikanta K. Mishra, Qian-Jie Fu, John J. Galvin Iii, Andrea Galindo

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Hearing loss in the extended high-frequency (EHF) range (>8 kHz) is widespread among young normal-hearing adults and could have perceptual consequences such as difficulty understanding speech in noise. However, it is unclear how EHF hearing loss might affect basic psychoacoustic processes. The hypothesis that EHF hearing loss is associated with poorer auditory resolution in the standard frequencies was tested. Temporal resolution was characterized by amplitude modulation detection thresholds (AMDTs), and spectral resolution was characterized by frequency change detection thresholds (FCDTs). AMDTs and FCDTs were measured in adults with or without EHF loss but with normal clinical audiograms. AMDTs were …
