Sitravatinib is an immunomodulatory tyrosine kinase inhibitor that can augment responses when combined with programmed death-1 inhibitors such as nivolumab. We report a single-arm, interventional, phase 2 study of neoadjuvant sitravatinib in combination with nivolumab in patients with locally advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) prior to curative nephrectomy (NCT03680521). The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) prior to surgery with a null hypothesis ORR = 5% and the alternative hypothesis set at ORR = 30%. Secondary endpoints were safety; pharmacokinetics (PK) of sitravatinib; immune effects, including changes in programmed cell death-ligand 1 expression; time-to-surgery; and disease-free survival …
Combining Granular Aerogels With Additively Manufactured Porous Structures For Broadband Sound Absorption, L. Paige Nobles, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Bhisham Sharma
Combining Granular Aerogels With Additively Manufactured Porous Structures For Broadband Sound Absorption, L. Paige Nobles, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Bhisham Sharma
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Our recent investigation [1] showed that the absorption behavior of granular aerogel agglomerates with average particle diameters less than 50μm is dominated by periodically spaced, high absorption peaks and troughs. While the absorption peaks, especially at lower frequencies, are desirable from an engineering application perspective, overcoming the loss in high frequency performance remains a challenge. Furthermore, the practical application of granular aerogels is limited by the difficulty in handling them. In this work, we propose a new design for a broadband noise absorber achieved by layering the aerogel granules within a 3D printed porous network. The design provides …

Study Of The Impact Of Boundary Conditions On Acoustical Behavior Of Granular Materials And Their Implementation In The Finite Difference Method, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Tongyang Shi, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Granular materials display significant differences in their acoustical response when tested in a standing wave tube, compared with the behavior of more traditional sound absorbing materials such as fibrous webs and foams. The latter materials can often be modeled as an equivalent fluid with the further assumption that the material properties do not depend on the input signal level. In contrast, the level dependence of the acoustical behavior of granular materials has been observed in measurements of glass bubbles, as reported in previous studies, for example. When the input level is low, the absorption coefficient of the glass bubble stack …

Prediction Of Acoustical Behavior Of Granular Material Stacks As Measured In A Standing Wave Tube By Using A Biot Theory-Based Model, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Tongyang Shi, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The acoustical behavior of granular materials, such as activated carbon and silica gel, has drawn attention in recent studies, due to their favorable properties such as good low frequency sound absorption. Like other more traditional porous materials, granular materials can also be tested in a standing wave tube for a convenient assessment of their acoustical properties. However, the behavior of granular materials stacked in a standing tube is more complex than that of traditional materials. For example, the response of lightweight glass bubbles reveals a clear dependence on the sound pressure level of the input signal. Also, when tested in …

Acanthamoeba species, Naegleria fowleri, and Balamuthia mandrillaris are opportunistic pathogens that cause a range of brain, skin, eye, and disseminated diseases in humans and animals. These pathogenic free-living amoebae (pFLA) are commonly misdiagnosed and have sub-optimal treatment regimens which contribute to the extremely high mortality rates (>90%) when they infect the central nervous system. To address the unmet medical need for effective therapeutics, we screened kinase inhibitor chemotypes against three pFLA using phenotypic drug assays involving CellTiter-Glo 2.0. Herein, we report the activity of the compounds against the trophozoite stage of each of the three amoebae, ranging from …
Improved Distributed Coordination Of Multi-Robot Systems In Unknown Environments, Zhun Cheng
Improved Distributed Coordination Of Multi-Robot Systems In Unknown Environments, Zhun Cheng
Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research
Swarm robot control algorithms intend to compute and coordinate the paths of a group of robots, known as a swarm, to perform certain tasks. To cooperate a swarm of robots, constant communication often is needed. However, when the robots are deployed to areas where communication network is unsteady, or unavailable, like underwater, underground, or remote areas. A continuation of the author’s summer research, this semester the multi robot RRT* was improved by using individual rewire processes and recalculating communication point when deemed inaccessible. This allows the planning scheme to be extended into the unknown space.
Performance Evaluation Of Pgm-Free Catalysts In Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Towards Sustainable And Cost-Effective Energy Solutions, Minju Lee
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The research presented in this report focuses on evaluating the performance of hydrogen fuel cells using platinum-group-metal (PGM)-free catalysts and optimizing their operation by varying cathode back pressure. The objective was to achieve similar or better performance compared to conventional platinum-based membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) while reducing the reliance on rare earth materials. A series of experiments were conducted using synthetically fabricated PGM-free MEAs, with results indicating that higher input pressures led to a significant increase in power output, reaching nearly 70% of the performance of the conventional platinum, ruthenium, and carbon-based MEAs. This research contributes to the overall understanding …

Perception Of Threat And Intent To Harm From Vocal And Facial Cues, James Tompkinson, Mila Mileva, Dominic Watt, Burton A Mike
School of Psychology
What constitutes a “threatening tone of voice”? There is currently little research exploring how listeners infer threat, or the intention to cause harm, from speakers’ voices. Here, we investigated the influence of key linguistic variables on these evaluations (Study 1). Results showed a trend for voices perceived to be lower in pitch, particularly those of male speakers, to be evaluated as sounding more threatening and conveying greater intent to harm. We next investigated the evaluation of multimodal stimuli comprising voices and faces varying in perceived dominance (Study 2). Visual information about the speaker’s face had a significant effect on threat …

Perils Of The Heroine: The Historic Role Of Woman In Comics, Britain Bray
Perils Of The Heroine: The Historic Role Of Woman In Comics, Britain Bray
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
Now more than ever the comics industry is welcoming diversity in its creators and stories, but with its historically misogynistic past, what legacy are creators inheriting? This essay seeks to explore that history, delving into the various eras of American Comics and how sexism shaped them. From the earliest heroines of the 40s, the ground-breaking feminist indie comics of the 70s, and the rampant female sexualization of the 90s, examples of brilliance and drudgery will be investigated in order to gain a better understanding of how comics became what they are today.
It's A Match: Shaadi.Com, Tinder, And The Fantasy Of Frictionless-Ness, Purvi Rajpuria
It's A Match: Shaadi.Com, Tinder, And The Fantasy Of Frictionless-Ness, Purvi Rajpuria
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
In this essay I carry out case studies of Shaadi.com and Tinder to unpack the cultural principles underlying the apps that shape our interpersonal relationships today. I demonstrate that these apps are grounded in a fantasy of frictionless-ness, or the desire to shield the self from discomfort caused by external factors, and argue that this is a fraught cultural ideal. My analysis reveals that a fantasy of frictionless-ness gives birth to a cultural landscape of rampant subjectivity and tepid morality, which hampers our ability to form deep and meaningful connections with each other. Recognising the flaws of such a fantasy, …

This essay explores the potential for narrative art (film, literature, comics) to be a transformative experience in the life of the consumer (viewer, reader) through a sensuous, embodied interaction with that work of narrative art. Drawing from film, narrative and comics theory as well as primary sources, I show that there is potential for consumers to engage in reading and viewing in an embodied way that allows them to take on these experiences as new memories, highlighting the ability of art to engage our senses in a manner that is similar to everyday lived experiences. In contrast with some theories …
The Dark House And Its Inhabitants, Emily Bielski
The Dark House And Its Inhabitants, Emily Bielski
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
From the inception of the genre, Gothic horror has been fixated on the domestic space in distress. This essay explores domestic archetypes and roles of the Gothic novel, serving as a “tour of the house”, analyzing the iconography of the dark castle, and how it externalizes and exacerbates the fears and behaviors of its inhabitants. The power dynamic of the household is starkly divided by the expectations and authority of masculine and feminine figures. In turn the “house” becomes a vehicle for the anxieties of the inhabitants—both experienced and inflicted—regarding gender, sexuality, isolation, and abuse. Exploration of the visual and …

Personal Narratives & Their Unique Personalities, Aayesha Ejaz
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay uncovers the motives behind memoir-writing, and explores the idea that it can serve as a gift—offering the audience some consolation by sharing one’s personal and emotional experiences. Since memoir-writing is an act of generosity, the essay also endorses the principle of crafting these narratives with love and one’s being—hands, voice, and other tangible ingredients. It focuses primarily on explicit storytelling through music, picture books, comics, et al. It also looks at some relevant terms like catharsis, misfit, vulnerability, and rigid gender roles in our world (school and society). On the whole, the essay encourages finding an outlet for …
Mothering As Feminism, Meera Patel
Mothering As Feminism, Meera Patel
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This critical essay proposes the concept of mothering-as-feminism, with the intention of interrogating American ideals of mothering and caregiving. Reforming the way we view mothering, as it relates to feminism, requires a re-evaluation of the American role of women and mothers—and how they are portrayed (and therefore seen and understood), valued, and supported. Focusing on the evolution of feminist theory throughout the past 70 years, as well as personal and secondary experiences, I demonstrate how political and social change occurs generationally and is dependent on the education of our children. Ultimately, I show the important role children’s literature plays …
Ambivalent Images, Beloved Objects: Building Bridges Between Picture Books And The Tangible World, Danielle Ridolfi
Ambivalent Images, Beloved Objects: Building Bridges Between Picture Books And The Tangible World, Danielle Ridolfi
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
"Ambivalent Images, Beloved Objects" examines how pedagogical theories prioritizing objects and direct sensory experiences in early childhood can be applied to the creation of picture book illustrations. In doing so, it positions picture books as educational tools, and advocates for the importance of using them not to recreate nature, but to connect readers with the tangible world of natural and human-made objects that our digital-driven culture eclipses. It strives towards a unifying pedagogical and aesthetic philosophy that accomplishes what illustrator Eric Carle characterizes as a bridge between the tactile world of objects and the world represented in illustrations.
This exploration …

Altered postural control in the trunk/hip musculature is a characteristic of multiple neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Previously it was not possible to determine if altered cortical and subcortical sensorimotor brain activation underlies impairments in postural control. This study used a novel fMRI-compatible paradigm to identify the brain activation associated with postural control in the trunk and hip musculature. BOLD fMRI imaging was conducted as participants performed two versions of a lower limb task involving lifting the left leg to touch the foot to a target. For the supported leg raise (SLR) the leg is raised from the knee while the …

The number one threat to the digital world is the exponential increase in ransomware attacks. Ransomware is malware that prevents victims from accessing their resources by locking or encrypting the data until a ransom is paid. With individuals and businesses growing dependencies on technology and the Internet, researchers in the cyber security field are looking for different measures to prevent malicious attackers from having a successful campaign. A new ransomware variant is being introduced daily, thus behavior-based analysis of detecting ransomware attacks is more effective than the traditional static analysis. This paper proposes a multi-variant classification to detect ransomware I/O …

Efficient Approaches For Qubit Mapping On Nisq Computers, Sri Sesha Sailaja Lakshmi Tulasi Khandavilli
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
—Quantum computing is gaining momentum in revolutionizing the way we approach complex problem-solving. However, the practical implementation of quantum algorithms remains a significant challenge due to the error-prone and hardware limits of near-term quantum devices. For instance, physical qubit connections are limited, which necessitates the use of quantum SWAP gates to dynamically transform the logical topology during execution. In addition, to optimize fidelity, it is essential to ensure that 1) the allocated hardware has a low error rate and 2) the number of SWAP gates injected into the circuit is minimized. To address these challenges, we propose a suite of …
