Towards A Reliable Machine Learning-Based Model Designed For Translating Sign Language Videos To Text, Maitha Essa Mohammad Ahli May 2023

Towards A Reliable Machine Learning-Based Model Designed For Translating Sign Language Videos To Text, Maitha Essa Mohammad Ahli

Theses

Communication serves key roles in building relationships through sharing feelings, passing information, and connecting with others. Communication among the hearing impaired remains a significant stumbling block in today’s society since their communication means demands for an interpreter each moment. Various researchers agree that successful communication calls for the involvement of all individuals in a conversation and thus, deaf and hearing-impaired people require precise and welcoming communication to promote their working and learning relationships. Sign Language Recognition (SLR) is a critical and auspicious approach to promoting communication among hearing-impaired people. Sign languages greatly benefit from Machine Learning based translation techniques since …

Parental Differential Treatment And Its Impact On The Sibling Relationship: A Literature Review, Kanisha Pierre-Noel May 2023

Parental Differential Treatment And Its Impact On The Sibling Relationship: A Literature Review, Kanisha Pierre-Noel

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Parental differential treatment (PDT) may happen for a number of reasons. Each child is different; therefore, each child has their own individual personality and may differ developmentally or in temperament. These differences can make parenting individual children challenging. These differences can cause some parents to show preference toward one child over another because their behavior may be easier to handle. While the difference in treatment due to varying situations and developmental needs is understandable, children may still be sensitive to the increased parental attention shown to another child and be negatively affected by it. PDT explores the differences in parenting …

In order to extract neutrino oscillation parameters, long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments rely on detailed models of neutrino interactions with nuclei. These models constitute an important source of systematic uncertainty, partially because detectors to date have been blind to final state neutrons. Three-dimensional projection scintillator trackers comprise components of the near detectors of the next generation long-baseline neutrino experiments. Due to the good timing resolution and fine granularity, this technology is capable of measuring neutron kinetic energy in neutrino interactions on an event-by-event basis and will provide valuable data for refining neutrino interaction models and ways to reconstruct neutrino energy. Two …

Uniqueness Of Relaxation Times Determined By Dielectric Spectroscopy, Mengchun Wu, Karin J. Bichler, Bruno Jakobi, Gerald J. Schneider May 2023

Uniqueness Of Relaxation Times Determined By Dielectric Spectroscopy, Mengchun Wu, Karin J. Bichler, Bruno Jakobi, Gerald J. Schneider

Faculty Publications

Dielectric spectroscopy is extremely powerful to study molecular dynamics, because of the very broad frequency range. Often multiple processes superimpose resulting in spectra that expand over several orders of magnitude, with some of the contributions partially hidden. For illustration, we selected two examples, (i) normal mode of high molar mass polymers partially hidden by conductivity and polarization and (ii) contour length fluctuations partially hidden by reptation using the well-studied polyisoprene melts as example. The intuitive approach to describe experimental spectra and to extract relaxation times is the addition of two or more model functions. Here, we use the empirical Havriliak-Negami …

The Relationship Between Sustainable Supply Chain Management Controversies, Sustainability Practices, And Firm Performance: The Role Of Different Organizational Resources And Environmental Turbulence, Amir Naderpour May 2023

The Relationship Between Sustainable Supply Chain Management Controversies, Sustainability Practices, And Firm Performance: The Role Of Different Organizational Resources And Environmental Turbulence, Amir Naderpour

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores the relationship between sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) controversies and sustainability practices, and their direct and indirect effects on firm performance. SSCM controversies refer to the conflicts between companies and stakeholders due to the negative impact of the company's activities on different pillars of sustainability throughout the supply chain. I study the direct relationship between SSCM controversies - measured by indicators in the Sustainalytics database (Tamayo-Torres et al., 2019) – and future sustainability practices. Using resource-based view, and the influence of investments in other resources on this relationship, I posit that the relationship between SSCM controversies and …

How Did Healthcare Affordability Change For U.S. Adults With Intellectual Disability After The Implementation Of The Affordable Care Act?, Nastassia Vaitsiakhovich

Center for Policy Research

Individuals with intellectual disabilities are marginalized in the United States and have worse health outcomes than their peers without disabilities. Lower socioeconomic status and a reliance on social welfare benefits and public health insurance programs often create barriers to access to care. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) aimed to make healthcare services more accessible. This brief summarizes the findings from a recent study that examined patterns in healthcare affordability under the ACA or noninstitutionalized adults ages 18-64 with intellectual disabilities. The findings suggest that the ACA increased the likelihood that adults with intellectual disabilities would access medical, specialty, …

Sursum Corda As A Call For Repentance And Faith, Sebastian Grünbaum May 2023

Sursum Corda As A Call For Repentance And Faith, Sebastian Grünbaum

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

This article examines Chemnitz's understanding and interpretation of the Sursum Corda in his work the Lord’s Supper. Chemnitz’s theological adversaries had been claiming that the Sursum Corda was evidence that the early church did not believe that the true body and blood were on the altar. They argued that the believer had to go up to the Lord (who sits on the right side of the Father) in faith and eat mere bread in this faith.3 Chemnitz aimed to correct this understanding by showing that the Fathers did not understand the Sursum Corda in this way but rather as an …

MFA in Visual Art

I create immersive installations, performances, and time-based media artworks that delve into stories of belonging, feminism, and language as power. These stories offer a potential for transformation from viewer to participant and a shift in how our world is seen and experienced. Through an exploration of perception and affect, I challenge dominant narratives, prompting a contemplation of contemporary power struggles for control.

In this text, I examine the impact of historical borders and migration on my life while also investigating questions of home, shared values, and rituals that contribute to one’s sense of belonging. I also highlight my commitment to …

Haptic Preservation Of Cultural Ephemera: An Extended Reality Solution Using Stereoscopic Experience Replication For Victorian Parlor Culture, Paige Sandheinrich, James Hutson

Student Scholarship

This study presents a solution to the problem of interacting with, while simultaneously preserving, fragile cultural heritage, such as Victorian parlor culture artifacts, which are essential cultural heritage items but at risk of damage and deterioration. The proposed multi-sensory experience uses extended reality (XR) technology, head-mounted displays (HMD) and haptic feedback via haptic gloves, providing an immersive experience that allows people to interact with these artifacts in a virtual environment. By replicating the experience of a Victorian parlor, this study provides a glimpse into the past and provides valuable resources for researchers. The proposed solution not only provides access to …

Big Ideas In Sports Analytics And Statistical Tools For Their Investigation, Benjamin S. Baumer, Gregory J. Matthews, Quang Nguyen

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sports analytics—broadly defined as the pursuit of improvement in athletic performance through the analysis of data—has expanded its footprint both in the professional sports industry and in academia over the past 30 years. In this article, we connect four big ideas that are common across multiple sports: the expected value of a game state, win probability, measures of team strength, and the use of sports betting market data. For each, we explore both the shared similarities and individual idiosyncracies of analytical approaches in each sport. While our focus is on the concepts underlying each type of analysis, any implementation necessarily …
