A Greener Shade Of Blue And Yellow: Sweden's Path To Environmental Leadership, Katherine Delfay May 2023

A Greener Shade Of Blue And Yellow: Sweden's Path To Environmental Leadership, Katherine Delfay

Student Theses 2015-Present

In 2021, Sweden was identified as the world’s most sustainable country and coined as a leader in global climate action. This paper analyzes the approach that Sweden takes to maintaining their sustainability as a nation and establishing environmentalism as a core value. Sustainability has deep roots in the country’s political and economic sectors, giving Sweden potential to be the world’s first net-zero nation. The first chapter demonstrates Sweden’s proportionately low environmental impact compared to other developed nations. The United States is used as a point of comparison throughout this paper in order to emphasize the progressiveness of the Swedish government …

Heatwaves In The Arctic: Their Effects On Northern Alaska, Tayler M. Rogers May 2023

Heatwaves In The Arctic: Their Effects On Northern Alaska, Tayler M. Rogers

Student Theses 2015-Present

Images of polar ice caps melting and news of global sea levels rising have dominated the media’s coverage of climate change during the past three to four decades. Focusing on these broad-scale impacts without further context does not adequately explain the complexities of what is currently happening in the Arctic and SubArctic Regions. This paper examines why changes to natural cycles like sea ice melt and permafrost thaw are posing significant threats to both human and non-human life. Shifts from the natural pattern of warming and melting in the Arctic, caused by external, human-induced pressures, have thrown these cycles into …

All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen May 2023

All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen

Honors Projects

Accutane is a pill-based derivative of Vitamin A used to treat cystic acne. The process to start and continue the medication each month is tedious and full of potential for error. This is especially true for female patients who are able to become pregnant as they have the additional step of monitoring and updating their birth control through an online portal. Patients are treated like numbers and there is little to no customization within Accutane treatment from patient to patient. To make this worse, reliable information about the drug is scarce and many turn to social media platforms or other …

Faculty Research 2023

Diverse inbred mouse strains are important biomedical research models, yet genome characterization of many strains is fundamentally lacking in comparison with humans. In particular, catalogs of structural vari- ants (SVs) (variants R 50 bp) are incomplete, limiting the discovery of causative alleles for phenotypic vari- ation. Here, we resolve genome-wide SVs in 20 genetically distinct inbred mice with long-read sequencing. We report 413,758 site-specific SVs affecting 13% (356 Mbp) of the mouse reference assembly, including 510 previously unannotated coding variants. We substantially improve the Mus musculus transposable element (TE) callset, and we find that TEs comprise 39% of SVs and …

Using Odr Platforms To Level The Playing Field: Improving Pro Se Litigation Through Odr Design, J.J. Prescott May 2023

Using Odr Platforms To Level The Playing Field: Improving Pro Se Litigation Through Odr Design, J.J. Prescott

Law & Economics Working Papers

In a few short years, court-connected ODR has shown itself capable of dramatically improving access to justice by reducing or eliminating barriers rooted in the simple fact that courts have traditionally offered dispute resolution services only during certain hours, only in particular physical places, and primarily through traditional face-to-face proceedings. Given the monopoly that courthouses have long had on resolving many legal issues, too many Americans have discovered their rights are simply too difficult or costly to exercise. As court-connected ODR systems spread, offering new types of dispute resolution services everywhere and often at any time, people will soon find …

Seed Aid: The Importance Of Local Decision-Making, Eva Chappus May 2023

Seed Aid: The Importance Of Local Decision-Making, Eva Chappus

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This policy paper focuses on the disconnect between donor and recipient states regarding seed aid and the implications of seed aid on local agricultural sovereignty and sustainability; it proposes that a reevaluation of international seed aid policies is needed. International food security organizations and food aid donors should prioritize local seeds for seed aid purposes to support local biodiversity and food sovereignty, and the stability and sustainability of local agricultural systems in the long term. Making adequate and accurate assessments of situations is crucial, and sourcing locally is an integral aspect of supporting local seed systems. The fundamental problem with …

2017 Charlottesville Riots – Media Coverage Paper Media And Terrorism, Abran Bartlett-Miller, Kareem El Damanhoury

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This paper intended to dissect the similarities and differences of media coverage for a very significant recent event--the 2017 Charlottesville "Unite the Right" riots and anti-racism protests. A focal moment within this series of events is the car attack by perpetrator James Alex Fields Jr., a white-supremacist responsible for the death of one woman and countless other injuries. The analysis reflects the coverage of this event through the lens of MSNBC and Fox News, two politically contrasting domestic news sources. An emphasis on media framing, which is loosely how media is manipulated to make the consumer think about a certain …

Land Dispossession And Native American Climate Adaptation: The Hopi Tribe, Jessica M. Curran May 2023

Land Dispossession And Native American Climate Adaptation: The Hopi Tribe, Jessica M. Curran

Student Theses 2015-Present

Since the 16th century, Native American communities have lost over 99% of their historical land. New settlers came in and completely destroyed the natives’ way of life, disregarding the love and respect that was once shown for mother earth. Flash forward to the 21st century and we are now struggling with the constant rising threat of climate change. However, this is not an equal fight. Past studies have shown that Native American communities are more vulnerable to climate change hazards compared to the general United States population due to their existing disparities. This paper focuses on the Hopi Tribe and …

The Value Of Zoos And Aquariums; A Perspective Via The Bronx Zoo And New York Aquarium, Reiariel D. Garcia May 2023

The Value Of Zoos And Aquariums; A Perspective Via The Bronx Zoo And New York Aquarium, Reiariel D. Garcia

Student Theses 2015-Present

Zoos and aquariums have always been a controversial topic. The image of animals behind bars is synonymous with zoos and aquariums from all over the world and that's all most people see. Zoos and Aquariums go much deeper than that negative perception and the notion that we are “locking away” animals solely for our selfish entertainment clouds zoos and aquariums higher purposes. Chapter 1 focuses on the histories of zoological parks, it brings to light some of the environmental problems zoos and aquariums are striving to fix while revealing to us why zoos possess such stereotypes. Chapter 2 dives into …

A Human-Animal Dialogue: Positive Reinforcement Training In Zoos And Aquariums, Kathryn Bennett May 2023

A Human-Animal Dialogue: Positive Reinforcement Training In Zoos And Aquariums, Kathryn Bennett

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses the benefits of positive reinforcement training in zoos and aquariums across America, and why this form of training is best for both the animals and people. There is a long standing public debate about the appropriateness of keeping wild animals in zoos and aquariums and their treatment within these facilities. The way in which some animal care facilities have historically managed animal behavior using dominance-based training, which uses methods such as punishment and deprivation, has rightly come under criticism and has proven to provide poor animal welfare. This poor mis-management has fueled an anti-zoo and aquarium agenda …

An Oasis In Crisis: Lesotho Highlands Water Project Turned Drought, Justine Wendt May 2023

An Oasis In Crisis: Lesotho Highlands Water Project Turned Drought, Justine Wendt

Student Theses 2015-Present

Water insecurity in underdeveloped countries is one of the most pressing issues for the longevity of our exponentially developing global economy. Countries like Lesotho, which are land-locked within another, more developed country, have few resources for water, food, and power without the aid of external forces. This paper investigates the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), its relationship to South Africa, and the ramifications faced by local communities. Further, this paper can serve as a case study into what we can avoid in the future, as water initiatives are both inevitable and crucial. Chapter 1 explores quantitative data regarding water scarcity …

Fighting Heat And Rain: New York City’S Climatic Problems And The Effect On The City’S Urbanism, Moises D. Lopez

Student Theses 2015-Present

Severe weather events have come about as a result of the changing global climate, which have drastically changed local and global environments. These events have destroyed many homes, land areas, and, unfortunately, lives. Therefore, it is important for cities that are highly populated to be aware of the great damage a severe weather event can bring. New York City (NYC) has been hit with many severe weather conditions, and with over 8 million habitants, it is important that this city should be prepared for any future weather events that may occur. This paper analyzes the effects of heat waves and …

Factors Associated With Referral To Genetic Testing Among Patients At High Risk Of Cancer, Garrett C. Havican May 2023

Factors Associated With Referral To Genetic Testing Among Patients At High Risk Of Cancer, Garrett C. Havican

Health Science Doctoral Thesis

There is mounting evidence that genetic testing can help inform individuals about their breast, ovarian, pancreatic, colorectal, and prostate cancer risk. With this information, a mutation carrier can determine the right procedural path to reduce their cancer or recurrence risk. Further guidance with the decision comes from national evidence-based guidelines and discussions with genetic counselors or trained healthcare providers. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with whether a patient at high risk of cancer undergoes a referral to genetic testing and the factors that influence that decision. A secondary analysis was conducted of local source data from a …
