Trade-Offs Between Temperature And Fitness In Euschistus Heros (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae): Implications For Mass Rearing And Field Management, Ana Paula Frugeri Barrufaldi, Rafael Hayashida, William Wyatt Hoback, Leon G. Higley, Jose Romario De Carvalho, Regiane Cristina De Oliveira

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is one of the most abundant soybean stink bug pests in Brazil. Temperature is a key factor that affects its development and reproduction, and fluctuating temperatures may impact the development and reproduction of E. heros differently from those under constant temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of constant and fluctuating temperature on the biological characteristics of E. heros in three successive generations. Treatments consisted of six constant temperatures (19oC, 22oC, 25oC, 28oC, 31oC and 34 …

Academic Librarians' Opinions On Social Justice Advocacy, Judith L. Brink Drescher May 2023

Academic Librarians' Opinions On Social Justice Advocacy, Judith L. Brink Drescher

Librarian Presentations

This session will reveal the results of 113 academic librarians surveyed regarding their views on social justice advocacy. As part of a mixed-methods exploration, both quantitative and qualitative elements will be explored. Beyond a comprehensive survey administered, librarian advocates describe how they approach issues of social justice, what the benefits are of addressing inequities within academic libraries, what barriers they've encountered in their advocacy efforts and initiatives, and what advice a more experienced advocate might offer to a peer with less knowledge who is interested in becoming more involved.

Social And Emotional Development Of Toddlers Post-Covid-19 Pandemic, Alice M. Bygd May 2023

Social And Emotional Development Of Toddlers Post-Covid-19 Pandemic, Alice M. Bygd

Counselor Education Capstones

The COVID-19 pandemic created a significantly different world for infants and very young children to grow and develop their social and emotional skills. These infants are now today’s toddlers. They were born or spent the earliest months of their lives in a society that was lacking the naturally occurring social and emotional experiences that children have had in the past. Research on the social and emotional development of young children since the COVID-19 pandemic is lacking greatly. This is due to how close the lived experiences of a pandemic for society are to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The …

Transformer-Based Feature Fusion Approach For Multimodal Visual Sentiment Recognition Using Tweets In The Wild, Fatimah Alzamzami, Abdulmotaleb El Saddik May 2023

Transformer-Based Feature Fusion Approach For Multimodal Visual Sentiment Recognition Using Tweets In The Wild, Fatimah Alzamzami, Abdulmotaleb El Saddik

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

We present an image-based real-time sentiment analysis system that can be used to recognize in-the-wild sentiment expressions on online social networks. The system deploys the newly proposed transformer architecture on online social networks (OSN) big data to extract emotion and sentiment features using three types of images: images containing faces, images containing text, and images containing no faces/text. We build three separate models, one for each type of image, and then fuse all the models to learn the online sentiment behavior. Our proposed methodology combines a supervised two-stage training approach and threshold-moving method, which is crucial for the data imbalance …

Increasing Racial Diversity In The North American Plant Phenotyping Network Through Conference Participation Support, David Lebauer, Alexander Bucksch, Jennifer Clarke, Jesse Potts, Sonali Roy

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

A key goal of the North American Plant Phenotyping Network (NAPPN) annual conference is to cultivate a new generation of scientists from diverse backgrounds. As part of their effort to diversify the plant phenomics research community, NAPPN acquired funding to cover all attendance costs for participants from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) for the 2022 annual meeting. Seven award recipients represented the first attendees from HBCUs in the conference’s 6-year history. In this commentary, we report on the impact of the conference awards, including lessons learned, and the future of the award.

Milton Time Final Report, Jacqueline Rounsavill, Eleanor Geno, Alessandra Costantini, Brian Miller, Mia Bohi-Green

Final Reports in ENST 411: Environmental Community Projects

Our main focus with this project was to hold a well-attended event in Milton, PA on Earth Day (April 22nd) that raised awareness for TIME’s “The Landscape of Main Street” Museum. We wanted this event to be accessible to all ages and marketed towards, but not limited to, the Milton community. Additionally, we hoped this event would generate attendance to the museum, educate attendees (especially children) on Milton’s history and ecology, get local businesses involved, and ultimately generate excitement within the community; getting residents more involved and bringing people together. We planned that this event would also include a brochure- …

Faculty Research 2023

BACKGROUND: High sequence identity between segmental duplications (SDs) can facilitate copy number variants (CNVs) via non-allelic homologous recombination (NAHR). These CNVs are one of the fundamental causes of genomic disorders such as the 3q29 deletion syndrome (del3q29S). There are 21 protein-coding genes lost or gained as a result of such recurrent 1.6-Mbp deletions or duplications, respectively, in the 3q29 locus. While NAHR plays a role in CNV occurrence, the factors that increase the risk of NAHR at this particular locus are not well understood.

METHODS: We employed an optical genome mapping technique to characterize the 3q29 locus in 161 unaffected …

A Deeper Understanding Of Noise Effects On Cetaceans, Jason N. Bruck May 2023

A Deeper Understanding Of Noise Effects On Cetaceans, Jason N. Bruck

Faculty Publications

Recent research with cetaceans under human care is illuminating just how dolphins are affected by human-made noise both in terms of their ability to cooperate as well as their ability to habituate to such noise. This research is providing granular detail to regulators assessing the problems associated with anthropogenic effects and is highlighting a role for behavior/cognition research in conservation.

The Impact Of A Culturally Responsive Approach In Science Education On Kindergarten Students, Monique Hite-Patterson May 2023

The Impact Of A Culturally Responsive Approach In Science Education On Kindergarten Students, Monique Hite-Patterson

Dissertations

Classrooms today are more ethnically and linguistically diverse. Unfortunately, students of color demonstrate a history of marginalized educational inequities (Williamson et al., 2007). These marginalized educational inequities impact academic achievement across all content areas especially literacy, math, and science. To improve the academic performance of students who are culturally, racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse, methods of instruction and pedagogy that better facilitate learning among diverse student populations must be instituted (Ladson-Billings, 2005). A mixed methods study was conducted in response to the need to examine the impact of using culturally responsive strategies on kindergarten student’s attitudes towards science and their …

Liturgy & Life: How The Divine Service Connects With The Rest Of The Week, Benjamin Janssen May 2023

Liturgy & Life: How The Divine Service Connects With The Rest Of The Week, Benjamin Janssen

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

On vicarage, I was blessed to spend many hours with a faithful member named Ginger, who, alongside her husband Walter, runs and operates the congregation’s robust food and clothing distribution center. This center is completely run by volunteer efforts out of the undercroft of the church and successfully feeds and clothes 150 families a month. This work both serves the neighbor in need and brings the congregation into contact with many of those living in the immediate community. In short, it is a blessing to the congregation and the surrounding community. Therefore, at the end of each service day, I …
