Gender Disparities Present Within The Legal Profession, Olivia M. Sanders May 2023

Gender Disparities Present Within The Legal Profession, Olivia M. Sanders

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the problem of gender disparities present within the legal profession in order to discover their causes and ways to mitigate them. Currently, there are a variety of gender disparities in the legal profession. Women are paid less than their male counterparts, are exposed to sexual harassment and violence more often, and receive fewer leadership opportunities, to name just a few of these disparities. While these disparities are documented in larger firms, little data exists on the extent of such issues in smaller firms, especially in the southeastern United States. Accordingly, I interviewed eight individuals with their juris …

Aging An Ancient Maya Population From Actuncan, Belize Using Dental X-Rays, Kaitlyn Nicole Cash

Honors Theses

My goal is to determine an accurate age at death estimation of an ancient Maya population from the archaeological site of Actuncan, Belize. This was done by measuring the lengths of the coronal pulp cavities in the individuals’ teeth. I used X-Ray images to measure the coronal pulp cavities of the teeth and estimated age using multiple regression formulae for premolars, molars, and incisors to make age estimations. The formulae came from two studies, Ikeda et al. (1985) and Drusini (2008), that form the basis of my research. Ikeda et al. (1985) was the first to use this aging method, …

The Effect Of Land-Based Repeated Sprint Training In Hypoxia Compared To Normoxia On Anaerobic Capacity, Repeated Sprint Ability, And 100-Yard Swimming Performance: A Single-Blind Crossover Study, John Holohan

Dissertations - ALL

For over fifty years, athletes have attempted to induce additional improvements in middle and distance race performance by supplementing their sea-level conditioning programs with hypoxic training to improve aerobic capacity. The apparent success of this practice fostered an interest in applying hypoxic training to improve single-sprint, repeated sprint, and team sports performance. In response to this interest, a novel hypoxic training approach, referred to as repeated sprinting in hypoxia (RSH), was proposed. RSH training is similar to training in normoxia (RSN). Both consist of performing multiple short sprints (≤ 30 seconds) on a work-to-rest ratio that does not permit complete …

However, the advent of meter-scale laboratory generated lava flows allows for safe and detailed study of active basalt flows. By using natural basaltic material at natural eruption temperatures, …

Space And Time In Kant's Inaugural Dissertation, Dante Dauksz May 2023

Space And Time In Kant's Inaugural Dissertation, Dante Dauksz

Dissertations - ALL

In one of his more famous Reflexionen, Kant wrote that the year 1769 gave him a “great light.” The first major publication to appear in the wake of Kant’s “great light” is the Inaugural Dissertation, a work in which he articulated some of his most characteristic doctrines for the very first time. Among these various doctrines, perhaps the most famous is Kant’s novel theory of time and space. In particular, there are two central claims which Kant attempts to establish about time and space in the Dissertation. First, that our representations of time and space are not empirical concepts acquired …

The Biophysics Of Bacterial Collective Motion: Measuring Responses To Mechanical And Genetic Cues, Merrill Einar Asp May 2023

The Biophysics Of Bacterial Collective Motion: Measuring Responses To Mechanical And Genetic Cues, Merrill Einar Asp

Dissertations - ALL

Mechanobiology is an emerging field investigating mechanical signals as a necessary component of cellular and developmental regulation. These mechanical signals play a well-established role in the differentiation of animal cells, whereby cells with identical genes specialize their function and create distinct tissues depending on the physical properties of their environment, such as shear stiffness. These differences arise from the cell’s ability to use those incoming signals to inform which genes it expresses and what molecular machinery it builds and activates. Understanding the various missing factors that cause cells with specific genes to express an emergent phenotype is termed the genotype-to-phenotype …
