Real-Time Adaptive Detection And Recovery Against Sensor Attacks In Cyber-Physical Systems, Lin Zhang May 2023

Real-Time Adaptive Detection And Recovery Against Sensor Attacks In Cyber-Physical Systems, Lin Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) utilize computation to control physical objects in real-world environments, and an increasing number of CPS-based applications have been designed for life-critical purposes. Sensor attacks, which manipulate sensor readings to deceive CPSs into performing dangerous actions, can result in severe consequences. This urgent need has motivated significant research into reactive defense. In this dissertation, we present an adaptive detection method capable of identifying sensor attacks before the system reaches unsafe states. Once the attacks are detected, a recovery approach that we propose can guide the physical plant to a desired safe state before a safety deadline.Existing detection approaches …

Stream Temperature As A Tracer Of Interactions Amongst Hydrological Processes, Atmospheric Exchange, And Human Activity, Jeffrey Wade May 2023

Stream Temperature As A Tracer Of Interactions Amongst Hydrological Processes, Atmospheric Exchange, And Human Activity, Jeffrey Wade

Dissertations - ALL

The water temperature of global river networks (also referred to as ‘stream temperature’ or ‘river temperature’) is an influential control on numerous aspects of water quality and riverine ecology, impacting rates of solute processing, dissolved oxygen content, and habitat viability for aquatic ecosystems. River water temperatures arise from the complex interplay of hydrological processes, atmospheric forcings, anthropogenic disturbances, making river thermal regimes challenging to understand and predict at the reach, regional, and global scale. In the absence of widespread water temperature observations, models are commonly used to simulate aspects of water temperature variability by integrating the influence of basin-specific controls …

The Role Of Centrosome-Based Structures During Embryonic Development, Abrar Adnan Aljiboury May 2023

The Role Of Centrosome-Based Structures During Embryonic Development, Abrar Adnan Aljiboury

Dissertations - ALL

The centrosome is a versatile cellular organelle that plays important roles in cell division and ciliogenesis. These functions are achieved through the different substructures of the centrosome including the centrioles, centriole appendages, and the pericentriolar matrix (PCM). Even though the various roles of the centrosome substructures in ciliogenesis and spindle formation have been extensively studied in vitro and in vivo using invertebrate models, our knowledge about whether these roles are maintained or diverge during vertebrate embryonic development remain lacking. Here, we use zebrafish and human cells as vertebrate models (chapters 2, 3, and 4) in comparison to C. elegans (chapter …

Algaas Coating Studies For Present And Future Gravitational Wave Detectors, Nicholas Anthony Didio

Dissertations - ALL

With the first observation of a binary black hole merger in GW150914 \cite{150914Discovery}, LIGO heralded a new era in the field of observational astronomy. It was the first observation of any astronomical object by measuring its gravitational wave signature, opening a new window to the cosmos. A few years later, the first astronomical event to be observed by both electromagnetic waves and gravitational waves was made \cite{Cowperthwaite2017GW170817, Abbott2017GW170817}. Gravitational wave detectors are multi-kilometer long interferometers measure changes to their length imparted by passing gravitational waves that are smaller than an atomic nucleus. Such extreme precision requires extensive mitigation of many …

Deportation Of Refugees: The Politics Of Refugee Control In The United States, Jaisang Sun May 2023

Deportation Of Refugees: The Politics Of Refugee Control In The United States, Jaisang Sun

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation offers an interdisciplinary analysis of the emergence of a deportation regime in the United States that increasingly targets refugees as subjects of removal. Its aim is to investigate how and why some refugees are deported from the United States to places of persecution or to places where they have no ties. Despite the fact that it is formally illegal to deport refugees, the Untied States government has maintained and strengthened this practice of governing noncitizens since the 1980s. By doing so, I illustrate that U.S. refugee deportation policies are a historical result of the hegemony of the executive …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are being adopted as components in software systems. Creating and specializing DNNs from scratch has grown increasingly difficult as state-of-the-art architectures grow more complex. Following the path of traditional software engineering, machine learning engineers have begun to reuse large-scale pre-trained models (PTMs) and fine-tune these models for downstream tasks. Prior works have studied reuse practices for traditional software packages to guide software engineers towards better package maintenance and dependency management. We lack a similar foundation of knowledge to guide behaviors in pre-trained model ecosystems.

In this work, we present the first empirical investigation of PTM reuse. …

Drawing As Process: Expansiveness Through Constraint, Ciel Miao May 2023

Drawing As Process: Expansiveness Through Constraint, Ciel Miao

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

This paper explores the concept of drawing as a time-based practice, where the process is the core of the artwork rather than the finished product. I divide my artistic concerns into four chapters, each advancing on the previous one, to discuss my drawing practice, which allows for exploration of time and space across a wide array of media and styles of representation. I embrace impulse and intuition in the mark-making process, letting go of control while prioritizing the form of depicted figures over their image. This paper highlights the importance of my inner contradiction and how the process reflects my …

Melting, Dripping, Becoming: The Operations Of Memory From The Perspective Of Wax, Naomi Yu May 2023

Melting, Dripping, Becoming: The Operations Of Memory From The Perspective Of Wax, Naomi Yu

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

In my thesis, I explore how different compositional and material techniques are used to re-create a memory. Looking at artists such as Kiki Smith, Guadalupe Maravilla, and Anselm Keifer, I investigate the ways in which they utilize 2D and 3D materials to re-create feelings of memory.

I argue that the art object can conserve and portray memory through metaphorical acts of preservation. I will be specifically studying the acts of encasing and layering as a means to simulate the feelings of memory. I argue that these metaphorical actions create an artificial sense of time that imbues these objects with created …

Electric Vehicle (EV) has become one of the promising solutions to the ever-evolving environmental and energy crisis. The key to the wide adoption of EVs is a pervasive charging infrastructure, composed of both private/home chargers and public/commercial charging stations. The security of EV charging, however, has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper investigates the communication mechanisms between the chargers and EVs and exposes the lack of protection on the authenticity in the SAE J1772 charging control protocol. To showcase our discoveries, we propose a new class of attacks, ChargeX, which aims to manipulate the charging states or charging rates of …

Feature Selection From Clinical Surveys Using Semantic Textual Similarity, Benjamin Warner May 2023

Feature Selection From Clinical Surveys Using Semantic Textual Similarity, Benjamin Warner

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Survey data collected from human subjects can contain a high number of features while having a comparatively low quantity of examples. Machine learning models that attempt to predict outcomes from survey data under these conditions can overfit and result in poor generalizability. One remedy to this issue is feature selection, which attempts to select an optimal subset of features to learn upon. A relatively unexplored source of information in the feature selection process is the usage of textual names of features, which may be semantically indicative of which features are relevant to a target outcome. The relationships between feature names …
