Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of iohexol on standardized quantitative urine culture results in dogs. The authors hypothesized that the presence of iohexol in inoculated urine samples would result in lower bacterial concentrations (CFU/mL) and, therefore, decrease culture sensitivity.

SAMPLE

Urine samples were aseptically collected during cystoscopy from a single client-owned dog untreated with antimicrobials.

PROCEDURES

An experimental controlled study. The urine sample was divided into 38 aliquots (0.5 mL each) that were used as negative controls or inoculated with an equal amount of Escherichia coli (105 CFU/mL). Different volumes (0.1 and 0.5 mL) of contrast or saline were added …

Don’T Cite Funk, Oskar Liivak May 2023

Don’T Cite Funk, Oskar Liivak

Catholic University Law Review

For patent eligibility the Supreme Court continues to rely on its 1947 opinion in Funk Brothers Seed v. Kalo Inoculant. It is one of the most cited cases for patent eligibility and the Supreme Court relies heavily upon it. It forms one of the foundations of the current eligibility test in Mayo v. Prometheus. This article argues that this reliance is in error. Funk is just not appropriate for modern patent eligibility. Interestingly this view is not new. Ever since its appearance in Flook, the Supreme Court’s use of Funk has been dogged by criticism that faults the Court for …

Hydropower Development In South Asia: Data Challenges, New Approaches, And Implications For Decision-Making, Thomas Hennig, Tyler Harlan, Bryan Tilt, Darrin Magee May 2023

Hydropower Development In South Asia: Data Challenges, New Approaches, And Implications For Decision-Making, Thomas Hennig, Tyler Harlan, Bryan Tilt, Darrin Magee

Urban and Environmental Studies Faculty Works

In recent years scholars have advanced our understanding of the biophysical, socioeconomic, and geopolitical impacts of dams and hydropower infrastructure around the globe. Databases and maps have emerged that allow global comparisons between countries and river basins. However, reliable and freely available data do not exist for many regions. As a result, data limitations and quality issues persist, which limit the quality of analyses based on these datasets. This is particularly true in regions where hydropower infrastructure development is proceeding most rapidly, including South Asia's Third Pole region. We identify and describe serious quantitative and qualitative data dilemmas of existing …

A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Plastic Pollution From Environmental Sampling To Surveying: Quality Assurance, Freshwater Contamination, And Popular Opinions, Laura Audrey Thomasina Markley May 2023

A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Plastic Pollution From Environmental Sampling To Surveying: Quality Assurance, Freshwater Contamination, And Popular Opinions, Laura Audrey Thomasina Markley

Dissertations - ALL

Plastic pollution is a global problem impacting every environmental compartment, from the air in Mount Everest to urban freshwater supplies. The scope and magnitude of the plastic problem requires an interdisciplinary approach that addresses human and environmental dimensions. I look to inform circular economy approaches through three phases of research: 1) individual waste generation and perceptions of waste and plastic issues; 2) methods and quality control evaluation for quantification of freshwater microplastics; and 3) temporal and spatial variation in plastic particle dynamics over a 3-year period in an urban lake compared with a rural lake in Central New York. In …

Menu For Home Cooking, Zherong Hu

Theses - ALL

The purpose of this thesis is to chronicle the influences and origins of my work and how they ultimately led to the discovery of my current practice. While my childhood and high school experiences in China were the foundation for my art practice, my undergraduate and graduate school experiences in the United States are what allowed me to search, discover, and explore my roots. I begin the paper by describing who and what influenced me to pursue art as a calling. I then briefly refer to some of my undergraduate work for context. Next, I will address some of the …

Sexual Scripts And Sex Tips: Construction Of The Spiciest Subject Through Sex Educational Content On Tiktok, Ashley G. Hay May 2023

Sexual Scripts And Sex Tips: Construction Of The Spiciest Subject Through Sex Educational Content On Tiktok, Ashley G. Hay

Theses - ALL

This thesis investigates the changing shape of sex education online, particularly sex education that is pointed toward young audiences in algorithmically-constrained communities on TikTok. Drawing from rhetorical theory, critical sexuality studies, and critical algorithm studies, I situate sex education on TikTok within a broader paradigm of sexual scripting and sexual subjectification processes that participate in the cultural neoliberal sphere. I explore how sex educational TikToks rhetorically construct technosexual agents through digital pedagogies while navigating complex algorithmic constraints—and to do so, I analyze two emergent sexual scripts in these videos: that of orgasm and aftercare. While orgasm discourses fold neatly into …

Imago River: From Archive To Stream, Daisy Wiley May 2023

Imago River: From Archive To Stream, Daisy Wiley

Theses - ALL

I track the often imperceptible: ideological undercurrents that fade in and out of comprehension, the hidden knotted roots of cultural mythologies, historical specters conjured anew... It can feel nearly impossible to name the narratives and logic embedded in the spaces we inhabit. Mythologies rooted in excess, exclusion, rampant expansion, and extraction are contrived to justify the sacrifice of peoples, cultures, and lands. My studio practice unearths these ideologies through place-specific materials, (counter-) archives, and traced histories.

In this thesis I use the practice of fly fishing to trace the historical ecology of the Onondaga Lake watershed. To support this framing, …

Media Literacy And Entertainment Media: A Comparative Experiment For Understanding Student Engagement And Enjoyment, Shannon Burth May 2023

Media Literacy And Entertainment Media: A Comparative Experiment For Understanding Student Engagement And Enjoyment, Shannon Burth

Theses - ALL

Media literacy has become increasingly important, as our digital media landscapecontinues to grow and change. Countless studies have been done to explore the importance and impact of media literacy interventions. However, existing studies infrequently measure levels of enjoyment and engagement associated with these interventions. By applying the theoretical lens of edutainment and critical enjoyment, this research will hypothesize that entertainment media will be most engaging, enjoyable, and enduring for media literacybased activities. Using an experimental design (N = 44), this study will compare these variables across three conditions (memes, ads, news headlines). The findings from this study lack statistical power …

End-To-End Decision Focused Learning Using Learned Solvers, Yehya Marwan Farhat May 2023

End-To-End Decision Focused Learning Using Learned Solvers, Yehya Marwan Farhat

Theses - ALL

Achieving fusion of deep learning with combinatorial algorithms promises transformativechanges to AI. Creating an impact in a real-world setting requires AI techniques to span a pipeline from data, to predictive models, to decisions. Aligning these components together requires careful consideration, as having these components trained separately does not account for the end goal of the model. This work surveys general frameworks for melding these components, we focus on the integration of optimization methods with machine learning architectures. We address some challenges and limitations associated with these methods and propose a novel approach to address some of the bottlenecks that arise.

Philosophical Approaches To Evaluating Critical Thinking As Diminished Empathy: A Qualitative Analysis Of News Framing Of Student Loan Forgiveness, Maleeha Bhadki May 2023

Philosophical Approaches To Evaluating Critical Thinking As Diminished Empathy: A Qualitative Analysis Of News Framing Of Student Loan Forgiveness, Maleeha Bhadki

Theses - ALL

Critical thinking has long been recognized across disciplines as being solely rooted in problem-solving and logical argument construction. By using Miranda Fricker’s Epistemic Injustice: The Power and Ethics of Knowing as a core theoretical framework, this study aims to deconstruct the ways in how news framing has shaped critical thinking over vast periods of time through an exploration into the ways in which thinking has been socially understood in an otherwise largely technologically immersed world. Using a rhetorical criticism approach, 33 news articles and segments are analyzed from a variety of popular news sources from several platforms that are commonly …

Computational Biophysics Of The Lipidome, Faris Amer May 2023

Computational Biophysics Of The Lipidome, Faris Amer

Theses - ALL

Lipids are an essential building block for human life. The amphipathic properties of these molecules enable them to form the cell membranes that act as a barrier between a cell’s interior and exterior. By forming membranes, lipids are directly involved in various cell processes and in the regulation of membrane transport. In this work, we explored the effects of membrane asymmetry on red blood cells and on two types of placental cells. Membranes were analyzed using molecular dynamics simulations after utilizing existing experimental data. Changes in cholesterol partitioning and in membrane properties such as density and area per lipid revealed …

From Avoidance To Healing: The Portrayal Of Death In Contemporary Children's Literature, Jiayun Xu

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines the portrayal of death in children's literature from three different perspectives. Firstly, it explores how authors approached the topic during the Victorian era when death was an everyday reality due to rampant diseases. Secondly, it analyzes how authors depict death in different ways, including involuntary death, the pursuit of the sublime, and the nature of life cycle. Thirdly, it explores how authors address children's psychological states when dealing with death, including reducing pre-death pain, using poetic expression, promoting healing from grief, and associating memory loss with death. Finally, the author creates a children's book that confronts the …

Comparing Response Outcomes For Simultaneous And Sequential Lineup Procedures, Gabriella Larson May 2023

Comparing Response Outcomes For Simultaneous And Sequential Lineup Procedures, Gabriella Larson

Theses - ALL

After witnessing a crime, eyewitnesses are typically presented with a six-person lineup, either simultaneous or sequential, and asked to pick out the perpetrator from the six faces presented. These eyewitnesses may or may not be asked to provide a confidence rating for their decision. Current research remains split on if simultaneous or sequential lineups provide the best opportunity for correct identifications of the perpetrator (hits) while limiting incorrect identifications of innocent lineup members (false alarms or foil IDs), though most recently there has been a shift towards adopting the sequential procedure in police departments. Furthermore, it is not clear how …

Recent Changes In Mercury Cycling Within The Conterminous United States, Connor Ian Olson May 2023

Recent Changes In Mercury Cycling Within The Conterminous United States, Connor Ian Olson

Dissertations - ALL

The natural cycling of mercury (Hg) has been augmented by anthropogenic activities, including mining, waste incineration, and the combustion of fossil fuels. The subsequent enrichment of Hg in air, soils, and surface waters has caused concern, due to the adverse health effects of mercury on humans and wildlife. In the United States, policies like the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and the Mercury and Air Toxics Rule have led to decreases in domestic emissions, but global emissions have increased in recent years and now dominate U.S. emissions. As a result, uncertainties remain regarding how quickly and to what extent …

Causal Effects Of Green Infrastructure On Stormwater Hydrology And Water Quality, Caitlin G. Eger May 2023

Causal Effects Of Green Infrastructure On Stormwater Hydrology And Water Quality, Caitlin G. Eger

Dissertations - ALL

Applications of green infrastructure to stormwater management continue to increase in urban landscapes. There are numerous studies of individual stormwater management sites, but few meta-analyses that synthesize and explore design variables for stormwater control structures within a robust statistical framework. The lack of a standardized framework is due to the complexity of stormwater infrastructure designs. Locally customized designs fit to meet diverse site conditions create datasets that become messy, non-uniform, and difficult to analyze across multiple sites. In this dissertation, I first examine how hydrologic processes govern the function of various stormwater infrastructure technologies using water budget data from published …

In theoretical foundation and methodology, the study drew on theories of symbolic interactionism and discourse, as well as key theoretical understandings of identity. Data were collected from six participants over the course of nine months through interviews, participant observation, and audio-recordings of the team’s planning sessions. The findings from this study show that each participant constructed multiple identities, such as team leader or …

Civility, Epistemic Injustice, And Criticality: Toward A Praxis Of Affective Democratic Friction, Sally J. Sayles-Hannon May 2023

Civility, Epistemic Injustice, And Criticality: Toward A Praxis Of Affective Democratic Friction, Sally J. Sayles-Hannon

Dissertations - ALL

Socially-privileged students’ discomfort in the social justice classroom as injustice is dramatically increasing in public discourse, especially as the Anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) movement thrives. It is in the current climate of Anti-CRT that social justice educators must be vigilant of how classrooms could reproduce the very injustices they seek to problematize. Coupled alongside social justice educators’ fears of job security and violence—physical, emotional, and epistemic—calls for civility that function to mute discomfort about systemic injustices could easily creep into classrooms. I claim civility can function speciously—when appeals to civility falsely claim, even if well-intentioned, to create just, open dialogue. …

Findings illustrated the presence of ableism surrounding the lives of individuals with IDD. This ableism was apparent within many aspects of the participants lives and experiences during IPSE. Ableism across larger systems was impacting access to higher …

Estimating Dry Deposition Of Atmospheric Aerosols By Rain Washoff From Urban Surfaces, Alexander James Johnson May 2023

Estimating Dry Deposition Of Atmospheric Aerosols By Rain Washoff From Urban Surfaces, Alexander James Johnson

Dissertations - ALL

Dry deposition refers to the set of processes by which particles and gases are removed from the atmosphere in the absence of precipitation. Predicting particle dry deposition onto surfaces in populated areas is important for estimating the depletion of concentrations of airborne particles moving downwind and for calculating the accumulation of particles onto surfaces. However, there are no standard criteria for estimating dry deposition to surfaces in cities. The equivalent of the throughfall method for urban areas (urban throughfall) involves collecting fresh rain above building roofs while simultaneously sampling rain washoff draining from the roofs. It has not yet been …

Artificial Intelligence Assisted Motor Learning For Speech Sound Disorders Impacting /ɹ/: The Percept Project, Nina R. Benway May 2023

Artificial Intelligence Assisted Motor Learning For Speech Sound Disorders Impacting /ɹ/: The Percept Project, Nina R. Benway

Dissertations - ALL

Approximately 1-2% of the American population enters adulthood with a residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) that impacts the clear pronunciation of speech sounds, most frequently /ɹ/ in fully-rhotic dialects of American English. RSSD is commonly encountered by clinicians, but traditional treatment practices have not been consistently effective in improving an individual’s clarity of /ɹ/. Unresolved RSSD may lead to a lifelong negative impact on quality of life. Recent research has shown that motor-based intervention, which involves high intensity speech practice that adapts in difficulty, can improve production of /ɹ/ even for those who have not responded to traditional treatment. However, …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Due to the advances in DNA markers, kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers could accelerate breeding programs and genetically improve drought tolerance. Two previously reported KASP markers, TaDreb-B1 and 1-FEH w3, were investigated in this study for the markerassisted selection (MAS) of drought tolerance. Two highly diverse spring and winter wheat populations were genotyped using these two KASP markers. The same populations were evaluated for drought tolerance at seedling (drought stress) and reproductive (normal and drought stress) growth stages. The single-marker analysis revealed a high significant association between the target allele of 1-FEH w3 and drought susceptibility in the spring …

Meta-Analysis Of Driving Behavior Studies And Assessment Of Factors Using Structural Equation Modeling, Duong Ngoc Hai, Chu Cong Minh, Nathan Huynh

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to understand the factors that influence unsafe driving practices by examining published studies that utilized the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict driving behavior. To this end, it reviews 42 studies published up to the end of 2021 to evaluate the predictive utility of TPB by employing a meta-analysis and structural equation model. The results indicate that these studies sought to predict 20 distinct driving behaviors (e.g., drink-driving, use of cellphone while driving, aggressive driving) using the original TPB constructs and 43 additional variables. The TPB model with the three original constructs is …
