Cover Crop Application On Dredged Sediments Increases Corn Yield Through Microorganism-Associated Enzyme-Driven Nutrient Mineralization, Ashley N. Julian, Louise M. Stevenson, Megan A. Rúa May 2023

Cover Crop Application On Dredged Sediments Increases Corn Yield Through Microorganism-Associated Enzyme-Driven Nutrient Mineralization, Ashley N. Julian, Louise M. Stevenson, Megan A. Rúa

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background & Aims

Common strategies to mitigate soil degradation of agricultural soils include cover crop application and soil amendment addition. Applying dredged sediments as a soil amendment is gaining popularity since they often provide benefits other amendments lack; however, their use with cover crops is largely unexplored. To understand how cover crop use changes the restorative properties of dredged sediments, we assessed soil physical and chemical properties, enzymatic activities, and corn yield for plots of dredged sediments with and without a cover crop.

Methods

We assessed soil texture, bulk density, water content, pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, calcium, magnesium, …

3-D Printed Microstructures With Zno Nanoflower For Antimicrobial Applications, Henry Yuqing May 2023

3-D Printed Microstructures With Zno Nanoflower For Antimicrobial Applications, Henry Yuqing

Theses

Many studies have been conducted to combat the bacterial infections problem by creating antimicrobial surfaces. However, the majority of them require complex manufacturing processes and expensive equipment. In this study, a cheaper and easy to be fabricated antimicrobial surface has been developed. First, a micropatterned 3D printed structure was fabricated. Then it was coated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflower. The study demonstrated that micropatterned structure served as an “armor” to the nanostructure from plastic scraper and finger abrasion. To test the antimicrobial performance of the surface, the chip was immersed in 2E8 CFU/mL Escherichia coli (E. coli) suspension and incubated …

Implementing An Infant-Driven Feeding Practice Model, Ann P. Nguyen May 2023

Implementing An Infant-Driven Feeding Practice Model, Ann P. Nguyen

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Neonatal feeding practices have been the focus of many quality improvement studies due to large variations in care practices. Traditionally, the model for neonatal feeding has been a volume-based approach, one that focuses on a prescribed quantity consumed rather than the infant’s physiologic and developmental maturity (Fry et al., 2018). Recent literature has emphasized the benefits of a more developmentally supportive feeding approach in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), the infant-driven feeding model (IDF).

The IDF model focuses on individualized care, quality of the feed, and continuous assessment of feeding cues both before and during the feeding experience. Current literature …

Reducing 30-Day Heart Failure Hospital Readmissions Through The Implementation Of A Telehealth Education And Screening Program, Madison Geib, Jo Loomis, Maria (Dupi) Gomez Cogan

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Heart Failure (HF) is a difficult disease to manage. It requires knowledge on weight monitoring, diet, exercise, medications, and symptom management. With this difficulty, there is a high incidence of HF patient readmissions into the hospital, especially in the first 30-days after discharge, showing that patients are not well equipped to manage their HF on their own at home. A review of the available literature found that some of the most common reasons for readmission include poor discharge planning, a lack of continuation of care, as well as a lack of education and adherence to their medications (Mathew & Thukha, …
