Depreciation Changes Ahead, Tina N. Barrett
Depreciation Changes Ahead, Tina N. Barrett
Cornhusker Economics
When the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) was passed in 2018, a lot of time and focus was placed on all the things that were changing quickly and the things that were 5-6 years out became back burner problems. Amazingly enough, we are now at the stage of the bill where things are starting to phase out. These changes will start to impact tax returns starting in 2023 and will continue increasing taxable income through 2025. The first change is the phase out of the Bonus depreciation. This law has been on the books since 2001 (there was no …
Litigating Slavery’S Reach: A Story Of Race, Rights, And The Law During The California Gold Rush, Jason A. Gillmer
Litigating Slavery’S Reach: A Story Of Race, Rights, And The Law During The California Gold Rush, Jason A. Gillmer
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
In May 1852, Charles Perkins decided he wanted his slaves back. Born in Mississippi, Charles emigrated to California in 1849 during the height of the Gold Rush. When he came, like hundreds of others from Southern states, he also brought three enslaved men with him. Following California’s admission to the Union as a free state, however, Charles purportedly freed the men and then returned home, alone. Then, a year later, Charles had a change of heart. Following the enactment of the California Fugitive Slave Act in 1852—which declared that slaves brought to California before it became a state were still …
Market Humiliation, Hila Keren
Market Humiliation, Hila Keren
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
For many people, the marketplace is too often a site of intense humiliation. This Article aims to assist legal practitioners, judges, lawmakers, and scholars in understanding what market humiliation is, how it operates, and what can be done to curtail it. This is a particularly timely—even urgent—task due to a pair of 2022 developments at the Supreme Court that carry an enhanced threat to dignified market participation. In one, Cummings v. Premier Rehab Keller, the Court denied damages for emotional harm from a deaf and legally blind woman who was refused suitable accommodation by a private medical provider. The …
Family Lifestyles, Timing Of Sleep, And Sleep Problems In One-Year-Old Infants, Therese B. Mianecki
Family Lifestyles, Timing Of Sleep, And Sleep Problems In One-Year-Old Infants, Therese B. Mianecki
Dissertations
Studies demonstrate that 10 to 74% of young children experience nocturnal sleep problems, specifically difficulty initiating sleep and waking and signaling. Many factors had been correlated with sleep problems in young children. However, family lifestyle factors and the timing and duration of sleep have not been explored as related factors in this age group. A descriptive correlational research design, framed in circadian theory, was used to describe sleep-wake schedules and sleep problems of one-year-old infants, using a convenience sample of 80 participants recruited from suburban medical practices.

Security-Enhanced Serial Communications, John White, Alexander Beall, Joseph Maurio, Dane Fichter, Dr. Matthew Davis, Dr. Zachary Birnbaum
Military Cyber Affairs
Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are widely used by critical infrastructure and are ubiquitous in numerous industries including telecommunications, petrochemical, and manufacturing. ICS are at a high risk of cyber attack given their internet accessibility, inherent lack of security, deployment timelines, and criticality. A unique challenge in ICS security is the prevalence of serial communication buses and other non-TCP/IP communications protocols. The communication protocols used within serial buses often lack authentication and integrity protections, leaving them vulnerable to spoofing and replay attacks. The bandwidth constraints and prevalence of legacy hardware in these systems prevent the use of modern message authentication and …
Investigating Factors Affecting Energy Consumption In Rural Alaskan Water Treatment And Distribution Systems, And Exploring Energy-Saving Strategies For Wastewater Treatment In Cold Climates, Muradur Rashedin
Engineering
Underlying permafrost in rural and remote Alaskan communities creates difficulties in connecting these communities to the electrical grid, resulting in the import of fuel from nearby cities by air or barge for electricity generation. During the winter months, a large amount of fuel and electricity is required for water treatment and distribution in these communities to keep the water temperature above freezing. Furthermore, domestic wastewater in rural Alaska is treated within wastewater lagoons, which lose their treatment efficiency during the freezing winter months. In contrast, the biological aerated filter (BAF), which has become an efficient alternative for domestic wastewater treatment …
Pistons To Pipelines: The Relationship Between Aviation, Oil And The Development Of The North, Daniel Berriochoa
Pistons To Pipelines: The Relationship Between Aviation, Oil And The Development Of The North, Daniel Berriochoa
Arctic and Northern Studies
Infrastructure development in the North is tied directly to military and private explorations for oil, national defense, and the use of aviation that provided access to remote regions. World War II drove the initial infrastructure development in Northwest Canada and the North Slope of Alaska, which linked aviation to oil and provided access points for further Arctic development. The Cold War brought the military back to the Arctic, using existing infrastructure to construct the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, the largest construction project ever attempted in the North at that time. Aviation provided the transportation flexibility necessary to accomplish the …
Democracy, Populism, And Concentrated Interests, Shai Dothan
Democracy, Populism, And Concentrated Interests, Shai Dothan
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Concentrated interest groups have a significant advantage over diffuse interest groups: they can effectively stop free riding among their members. Because of this advantage, concentrated interest groups work in unison and manage to capture the government in many democracies. Democratic mechanisms of separation of powers, an independent judiciary, and the rule of law are designed to prevent the capture of government by concentrated interests. Under certain conditions, these mechanisms make it possible for diffuse interests to have a fair share of the influence over the government. Populist ideologists doubt that claim, however. They are convinced that democracies are captured by …
Differentiating Strict Products Liability’S Cost-Benefit Analysis From Negligence, Paul F. Rothstein, Ronald J. Coleman
Differentiating Strict Products Liability’S Cost-Benefit Analysis From Negligence, Paul F. Rothstein, Ronald J. Coleman
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Dangerous products may give rise to colossal liability for commercial actors. Indeed, in 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court denied certiorari in Johnson & Johnson v. Ingham, permitting a more than two billion dollar products liability damages award to stand. In his dissenting opinion in another recent products liability case, Air and Liquid Systems Corp. v. DeVries, Justice Gorsuch declared that “[t]ort law is supposed to be about aligning liability with responsibility.” However, in the products liability context, there have been ongoing debates concerning how best to set legal rules and standards on tort liability. Are general principles of …

Deciphering Tumor Ecosystems At Super Resolution From Spatial Transcriptomics With Tesla, Jian Hu, Kyle Coleman, Daiwei Zhang, Edward B Lee, Humam Kadara, Linghua Wang, Mingyao Li
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Cell populations in the tumor microenvironment (TME), including their abundance, composition, and spatial location, are critical determinants of patient response to therapy. Recent advances in spatial transcriptomics (ST) have enabled the comprehensive characterization of gene expression in the TME. However, popular ST platforms, such as Visium, only measure expression in low-resolution spots and have large tissue areas that are not covered by any spots, which limits their usefulness in studying the detailed structure of TME. Here, we present TESLA, a machine learning framework for tissue annotation with pixel-level resolution in ST. TESLA integrates histological information with gene expression to annotate …

A Spiritual Call: Jeremiah’S Call To The Heart And The Stages Of Spiritual Progression In Carmelite Spirituality, Julia S. Whelan
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The aim of this study is first, to identify resonances between Jeremiah 1:10 and the three stages of the spiritual journey as defined by the Carmelites such as John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila (i.e., the stages known as purgative, illuminative and unitive) and then, in light of an in depth understanding of the spiritual senses attributed to Jeremiah 1:10 in its reception history, to evaluate the impact of Jer 1:10 upon the Carmelite conception of the spiritual journey.
A comprehensive Word Study is undertaken of six task verbs from Jer 1:10, presented as three pairs: to root …

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the most important attributes for a gonadotropin pen as perceived by assisted reproductive technology (ART) patients and fertility nurses, and to examine how well a prototype HP-hMG (MENOPUR
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This market research study incorporated a two-part survey with respondents (N=221) from Poland, Spain and the UK. Respondents included patients (n=141) who consulted a fertility specialist in the previous 2 years, and fertility nurses (n=80) who assisted in at least 75 ART cycles/year. Patients were divided into two subgroups depending on their experience with ART (experienced and naïve). Key attributes for an injection …
Community-Based Monitoring: Shoreline Change In Southwest Alaska, Jessica Ellen Christian
Community-Based Monitoring: Shoreline Change In Southwest Alaska, Jessica Ellen Christian
Geosciences
Arctic amplification has resulted in increased coastal hazards such as erosion in Alaska. The remoteness of the southwest Alaska coastline hinders frequent coastal hazard surveys, requiring alternate methods for measuring change throughout the year. This study documents and evaluates a community-based monitoring program in two southwestern Alaskan communities including Chignik Bay and Dillingham. The program entitled, Stakes for Stakeholders, has been running successfully since 2016 and continues to engage with rural communities to measure and map coastal change. The Stakes for Stakeholders program promotes self-advocacy and equips local participants with the tools, information, and resources needed to respond to increasing …
Endocrine Biomarkers To Improve Reproductive Monitoring In Female Polar Bears, Monica Brandhuber
Endocrine Biomarkers To Improve Reproductive Monitoring In Female Polar Bears, Monica Brandhuber
Fisheries
Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are threatened by climate change in the wild, and experience poor to moderate reproductive success in zoos. If current climate change trends continue, the species is unlikely to persist in Alaska by the end of the 21st century due to the loss of sea ice habitat. Polar bears are a seasonally polyestrous species that exhibit embryonic diapause and pseudopregnancies, making characterization of female reproductive status difficult. The purpose of this dissertation project was to investigate a suite of understudied hormones associated with reproduction, with the goal of improving reproductive monitoring in zoo-housed and wild polar bears, …
Phenotypic Divergence Between Hatchery Pink And Coho Salmon And Their Wild Counterparts, Alexandra G. Reich
Phenotypic Divergence Between Hatchery Pink And Coho Salmon And Their Wild Counterparts, Alexandra G. Reich
Fisheries
Interbreeding between hatchery and wild Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) is an ongoing management concern, particularly when hatchery Pacific salmon possess divergent phenotypes. This project investigated the potential domestication of hatchery Pacific salmon from the relaxation of natural and sexual selection; such divergence might reduce wild Pacific salmon fitness if strays interbreed with natural-born fish. In Southeast Alaska, U.S.A., we compared two years (even- and odd-year lines) of hatchery pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and one year of hatchery coho salmon (O. kisutch) to their wild source populations to characterize divergence in phenotypes associated with mating and reproductive success. Specifically, we examined …

Stock Composition And Coastal Migration Characteristics Of Coho Salmon In Fisheries Of Norton Sound, Alaska, Luke H. Henslee
Stock Composition And Coastal Migration Characteristics Of Coho Salmon In Fisheries Of Norton Sound, Alaska, Luke H. Henslee
Fisheries
Knowledge of the dynamic interactions between directed fishing effort and exploitable stocks of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. is needed to balance harvest opportunities against diversity conservation in mixed stock fisheries. This is often accomplished by relating stock proportions in commercial landings with spatial and temporal strata of harvests, but catch partitioning is hindered in fisheries targeting local stocks that do not display enough discernable variation for classification using modern tools (e.g., genetic stock identification). This study investigates the composition and migratory behavior of Coho Salmon O. kisutch stocks in the Norton Sound district of Alaska by mimicking local fisheries to …

Distress Related To Psychotic Experiences: Enhancing The World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview Psychosis Screen, Hans Oh, Nicole R Karcher, Nirit Soffer-Dudek, Ai Koyanagi, Megan Besecker, Jordan E Devylder
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: The abbreviated version of the World Health Organization (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) psychosis screen tends to yield high prevalence in online samples. Psychotic Experiences (PE) may not necessarily indicate current or imminent psychopathology; however, distressing PE appear to be more clinically informative.
METHODS: We analyzed data collected from an online survey administered to a Qualtrics panel (N = 2522 adults). Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined the association between PE (with and without associated distress) and several mental health outcomes, adjusting for age, gender, and race/ethnicity.
RESULTS: Individuals with distressing PE had greater odds of most mental …

BACKGROUND: Telehealth has become widely used as a novel way to provide outpatient care during the COVID-19 pandemic, but data about telehealth use in primary care remain limited. Studies in other specialties raise concerns that telehealth may be widening existing health care disparities, requiring further scrutiny of trends in telehealth use.
OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to further characterize sociodemographic differences in primary care via telehealth compared to in-person office visits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine if these disparities changed throughout 2020.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in a large US academic center with 46 primary …
Professional Identity Of Japanese Nurses: Bonding Into Nursing, Misuzu F. Gregg
Professional Identity Of Japanese Nurses: Bonding Into Nursing, Misuzu F. Gregg
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the process of establishing the professional identity of Japanese nurses. Professional identity was defined as self-identification with the nursing profession in Japan. Following a grounded theory design, data were generated by interviews, multi site participant observations, and theoretical memos. Eighteen Japanese nurses who were selected by theoretical sampling were formally interviewed. All tape-recorded interviews were transcribed in Japanese. Data were analyzed using methods of constant comparative analysis. Throughout the analysis both Japanese and English were used to avoid losing the subtle nuances of the Japanese language.

A Rare Cause Of Lymphadenopathy In A Young Hispanic Female: Unmasking Recurrent Nodal Rosai-Dorfman Disease, Blesset Alexander, Alfarooq Alshaikhli, Mery Bartl, Emilia Dulgheru
School of Medicine Publications
Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder that can present with painless bilateral symmetrical cervical lymphadenopathy, mimicking lymphomas. RDD is characterized by excessive tissue infiltration by dendritic cells, macrophages, or monocyte-derived cells, with a histopathologic diagnosis based on the presence of CD68+, CD163+, and S100+ histiocytes, which differentiate it from other histiocytic neoplasms. In this case report, we present a young Hispanic female with recurrent subcutaneous growths and lymphadenopathy, initially thought to be lymphoma, who was diagnosed with RDD after a significant diagnostic workup. Treatment initially consisted of surgical excision; however, due to recurrence, the patient was successfully treated …
