Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole May 2023

Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Are you being bogged down by copyright? Are you getting all the access you deserve? Eastern Kentucky University Libraries recently developed and implemented a new copyright policy for interlibrary loan that forgoes the outdated CONTU Guidelines or "Rule of Five" to more closely comply with Copyright Law and leverage Fair Use.

In this session, the presenters will discuss the inspiration behind abandoning CONTU, the process for obtaining approval from library and university stakeholders, and the impact of a new copyright policy on interlibrary loan workflows and collection development decisions. Participants will also engage in a discussion of the opportunities and …

Authority Control: It's Not Just For Catalogers, Carl Horne May 2023

Authority Control: It's Not Just For Catalogers, Carl Horne

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

This presentation will discuss the importance of authority control of access points in the library's online catalog. Authority control, by means of a file of authority records, is the linchpin of a well-ordered catalog - it is the means of creating and maintaining standardized access points throughout the file of bibliographic records. It is this good order that makes searching in the catalog efficient. The importance of authority control is a matter that Technical Services, and especially catalogers, need to impress on public services and other librarians across the organization, because non-catalogers sometimes view authority work as a luxury, or …

Patron Driven Dei Acquisitions: Using Education Students And The Diverse Book Finder To Diversify A Children's Picture Book Collection, Mitchell Scott May 2023

Patron Driven Dei Acquisitions: Using Education Students And The Diverse Book Finder To Diversify A Children's Picture Book Collection, Mitchell Scott

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

In Fall 2022, the IU Southeast Library won an institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion grant to conduct research on a patron driven acquisitions project carried out in a 300-level education course for preservice learning teachers. Leveraging the grant funds and the objectives of the 300-level course, we embedded an acquisition project into the course that used the Diverse Book Finder (DBF) as a teaching and selection tool. 29 students enrolled in the course were tasked with using the Diverse Book Finder to select 5 picture books that would be purchased and added to the library collection. This session will cover …

Print Government Documents: Working Together To Eliminate Your Print Documents (With Empathy), Claudene Sproles, Tyler Goldberg

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Ekstrom Library collected print government documents for decades as a selective depository. We will discuss our process for weeding hundreds of print documents collection from the collection. What are the reasons for weeding? Where can you find digital copies? What is the process for exchanging documents, and how many are really being requested by other depository libraries? What is the current state of depository rules and procedures?

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Lightning Round #2

During the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the University of Kentucky Libraries decided to take the opportunity to make service updates while workflow was altered or restricted by the pandemic. The Main Campus and Medical Center Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services at the University of Kentucky Libraries merged in order to streamline services and resources for both our patrons and staff. Having assessed this idea in the past, it was determined that this would be a suitable time to implement this change. Some of the highlights include merging OCLC symbols, reorganizing staff responsibilities and workflow, centralizing the patron interface, and …

Aging Manuka Honey Improves Antimicrobial Activity Against Pathogenic Bacteria, Rayna M. Carlson May 2023

Aging Manuka Honey Improves Antimicrobial Activity Against Pathogenic Bacteria, Rayna M. Carlson

2023 Symposium

Manuka honey (MH) has been documented to possess powerful anti-microbial properties through multiple mechanisms. These mechanisms include a low pH, high osmolarity, iron chelation, and its unique manuka factor (UMF), methylglyoxal (MGO). Although MGO is purported to be a major pillar in the honey’s antimicrobial properties, its activity is variable against different bacterial species. We hypothesize that MH’s other antimicrobial mechanisms may also exhibit variable activity against different bacterial species. Preliminary experiments to determine the Manuka honey minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for bacterial species, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, suggested that some Manuka honey antimicrobial mechanisms …

Overexpressing Two Helicobacter Pylori Small Rnas From A Bacterial Pathogenicity-Related Chromosomal Region To Investigate Their Regulation Of Virulence Genes, Roxanne N. Mcpeck, Olivia F. Morgan, Andrea R. Castillo Phd May 2023

Overexpressing Two Helicobacter Pylori Small Rnas From A Bacterial Pathogenicity-Related Chromosomal Region To Investigate Their Regulation Of Virulence Genes, Roxanne N. Mcpeck, Olivia F. Morgan, Andrea R. Castillo Phd

2023 Symposium

The bacterial pathogen Helicobacter pylori infects the stomachs of approximately 50% of humanity, causing symptomatic disease (e.g., stomach ulcers, gastric cancer, and MALT lymphoma) in 10-15% of the infected. Colonizing the acidic, inhospitable stomach requires H. pylori to tightly regulate gene expression despite lacking many common bacterial genetic regulatory elements. The pathogen may compensate by using abundant non-protein-coding small RNAs (sRNAs) to regulate gene expression, including of infection-intensifying virulence genes. Additionally, severe disease and cancer correlate with infection by H. pylori strains that contain a nonessential chromosomal region, the cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island (cagPAI). This encodes powerful virulence …
