Atherosclerosis is a complex, multi-stage disease characterized by pathological changes across the vascular wall. Endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, hypoxia, and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation contribute to its progression. An effective strategy capable of delivering pleiotropic treatment to the vascular wall is essential to limit neointimal formation. Echogenic liposomes (ELIP), which can encapsulate bioactive gases and therapeutic agents, have the potential to deliver enhanced penetration and treatment efficacy for atherosclerosis. In this study, liposomes loaded with nitric oxide (NO) and rosiglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonist, were prepared using hydration, sonication, freeze-thawing, and pressurization. The efficacy of this delivery system was …

Raising A Bottle-Fed Calf On A Cow/Calf Operation, Reganne K. Briggs, Katelyn Barsnick, Cheyenne Reid, Ashley Longmore

All Current Publications

Having bottle-fed calves on the ranch is common for beef producers. The most likely scenarios are a cow has died, a cow isn’t giving enough milk, or a twin has been rejected. All these scenarios are likely to happen, which results in an orphan calf. Bottle-feeding a calf is straightforward; however, there are limited resources, specifically for beef producers, looking for bottle-fed calf management strategies. When bottle-feeding a beef calf, there are some things to consider, such as feeding colostrum, selecting and using milk replacers, and weaning the calf. Many of the resources on bottle-calf management come from the dairy …

IntroductionAdjuvant chemotherapy (AC) can prolong overall survival (OS) after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, fitness for AC may be influenced by postoperative recovery. We aimed to investigate if serious (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ IIIa) postoperative complications affected AC rates, disease recurrence and OS.Materials and methodsData were extracted from the Recurrence After Whipple's (RAW) study (n = 1484), a retrospective study of PD outcomes (29 centres from eight countries). Patients who died within 90-days of PD were excluded. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare OS in those receiving or not receiving AC, and those with and without serious …

Monodelphis Domestica As A Fetal Intra-Cerebral Inoculation Model For Zika Virus Pathogenesis, John Thomas, Juan Garcia, Matthew Terry, Susan M. Mahaney, Oscar Quintanilla, Dionn Carlo Silva, Marisol Morales, John Vandeberg Phd

School of Medicine Publications

Monodelphis domestica (the laboratory opossum) is a marsupial native to South America. At birth, these animals are developmentally equivalent to human embryos at approximately 5 weeks of gestation, which, when coupled with other characteristics including the size of the animals, the development of a robust immune system during juvenile development, and the relative ease of experimental manipulation, have made M. domestica a valuable model in many areas of biomedical research. However, their suitability as models for infectious diseases, especially neurotropic viruses such as Zika virus (ZIKV), is currently unknown. Here, we describe the replicative effects of ZIKV using a fetal …

What Sts Can (And Can’T) Do For Law And Technology, Woodrow Hartzog May 2023

What Sts Can (And Can’T) Do For Law And Technology, Woodrow Hartzog

Faculty Scholarship

The field of law and technology has come a long way since we last heard the unmistakable squeal of a modem connecting to cyberspace. Most of us that remember that sound now probably have more grey hair than we used to. We’ve covered a lot of ground since “Lex Informatica” and “Code is Law,” so you’d think our field would have a deeply sophisticated method for understanding the relationship between law, society, and technology, right?

Professor Ryan Calo thinks the field can do better. In this concise and accessible unpublished article that is part of a new book project, Calo …

The rapid depletion of US groundwater resources and rising number of dying wells in the Western USbrings attention to the significance of groundwater governance and sustainability restrictions. However, such restrictions on groundwater withdrawals are likely to generate spillover effects causing further environmental stresses in other locations and adding to the complexity of sustainability challenges. The goal of this paper is to improve our understanding of the implications of growing global food demand for local sustainability stresses and the implications of local sustainability policies for local, regional, and global food production, land use, and prices. We employ SIMPLE-G-US (Simplified International Model …

Cell reprogramming to a myofibroblast responsible for the pathological accumulation of extracellular matrix is fundamental to the onset of fibrosis. Here, we explored how condensed chromatin structure marked by H3K72me3 becomes modified to allow for activation of repressed genes to drive emergence of myofibroblasts. In the early stages of myofibroblast precursor cell differentiation, we discovered that H3K27me3 demethylase enzymes UTX/KDM6B creates a delay in the accumulation of H3K27me3 on nascent DNA revealing a period of decondensed chromatin structure. This period of decondensed nascent chromatin structure allows for binding of pro-fibrotic transcription factor, Myocardin-related transcription factor A (MRTF-A) to nascent DNA. …

Tumors are comprised of a multitude of cell types spanning different microenvironments. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) has the potential to identify metabolic patterns within the tumor ecosystem and surrounding tissues, but conventional workflows have not yet fully integrated the breadth of experimental techniques in metabolomics. Here, we combine MSI, stable isotope labeling, and a spatial variant of Isotopologue Spectral Analysis to map distributions of metabolite abundances, nutrient contributions, and metabolic turnover fluxes across the brains of mice harboring GL261 glioma, a widely used model for glioblastoma. When integrated with MSI, the combination of ion mobility, desorption electrospray ionization, and matrix …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Smoking, alcohol consumption, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are known risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) including SCC of oropharynx (SCCOP) and SCC of oral cavity (SCCOC). Researchers have examined each of these risk factors independently, but few have observed the potential risk of their interaction. This study investigated the interactions among these risk factors and risk of OSCC.

METHODS: Totally 377 patients with newly diagnosed SCCOP and SCCOC and 433 frequency-matched cancer-free controls by age and sex were included. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to calculate ORs and 95% CIs.

RESULTS: We found that overall OSCC …

Androgynous Figures On Etruscan Cista Handles From Praeneste, Melanie Naples May 2023

Androgynous Figures On Etruscan Cista Handles From Praeneste, Melanie Naples

LSU Master's Theses

Muscular women and effeminate men adorn the lids of Etruscan Cistae found in Praeneste (modern Palestrina, 23 miles southeast of Rome, Italy). Cistae (Latin plural of cista) are storage containers used by the Etruscans for women’s beauty items. This thesis focuses on the androgynous, mostly nude, figures that serve as handles and are often displayed in pairs. These pairs frequently depict a man and a woman together and androgynous qualities are usually emphasized on the female figures. Discussions of the androgynous body in the ancient world have centered around Greece and Rome. Only recently (Sandhoff 2007, 2009, 2011), scholarship has …

Whole-Exome Sequencing Study Of Hypospadias, Zhongzhong Chen, Yunping Lei, Richard H Finnell, Yu Ding, Zhixi Su, Yaping Wang, Hua Xie, Fang Chen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Hypospadias results from the impaired urethral development, which is influenced by androgens, but its genetic etiology is still unknown. Through whole exome sequencing analysis, we identified NR5A1, SRD5A2, and AR as mutational hotspots in the etiology of severe hypospadias, as these genes are related to androgen signaling. Additionally, rare damaging variants in cilia-related outer dynein arm heavy chain (ODNAH) genes (DNAH5, DNAH8, DNAH9, DNAH11, and DNAH17) (p = 8.5 × 10−47) were significantly enriched in hypospadias cases. The Dnah8 KO mice exhibited significantly decreased testosterone levels, which had an impact on …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While many Americans may be questioning the value of a college degree due to rising costs, on virtually every measure of economic well-being and career attainment—from personal earnings to job satisfaction to the share employed full time—young college graduates are outperforming their peers with less education. Yet college dropout rates indicate that up to 32.9% of undergraduates do not complete their degree program, which has a financial impact on both students and the universities and colleges where they enroll (Hanson, 2022).

Historically, students who leave college before completing a baccalaureate degree are no better qualified than those with a high …

Selecting The Optimal Formwork System For Horizontal Elements, Alaa Allam, Emad Elbeltagi, Mohamed Naguib Abouelsaad, Mohamed E. El Madawy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Various types of formworks are available in the market for construction of cast-in-place concrete structures. Formwork has a significant impact on both construction time and cost. As such, decision making on the optimal formwork system is difficult and timeconsuming for designers or planners particularly for high-rise buildings, where any reduction in the cost of single-story formwork significantly decrease total construction cost. Formworks must be designed effectively as numerous accidents have happened as a result of poor design decisions. This article presents a Genetic Algorithm optimization model to select the optimal formwork system among Cuplock, Shore brace and Props systems that …
