Reducing Recycling Contamination Using An Information Nudge, Mimi Rivette May 2023

Reducing Recycling Contamination Using An Information Nudge, Mimi Rivette

LSU Master's Theses

Recycling contamination is a central challenge to recycling programs but is infrequently studied due to the difficulty of measuring contents and the inconvenience of sorting through recycling bags by hand. We conducted two simultaneous experiments to address both the issue of recycling contamination and the infrequency of its study at Louisiana State University in Fall 2021. We implemented two signage treatments, the first explicitly instructing passersby not to recycle a short list of common recycling contaminants, including Styrofoam, food wrappers, plastic bags, and face masks, and the second generally encouraging recycling but excluding specific instructions on what to recycle. To …

My Promise To Nature., Kathleen Mcvea May 2023

My Promise To Nature., Kathleen Mcvea

LSU Master's Theses

My Promise to Nature is a body of work created to emphasize the importance of conserving natural habitats in Louisiana’s Tunica Hills. The decision to do Land Art and select the Tunica Hills as the subject did not come to me right away. Nature and family have been woven throughout my work throughout my time in the M.F.A. program.

This was not out of reach, and I was already extremely passionate about the subject. It might be a pain due to location, but my family owned 400 acres of property in the Tunica Hills with a cabin that they had …

Remote Sensing And Artificial Intelligence-Based Modeling And Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms In Lake Pontchartrain, Ian Smith May 2023

Remote Sensing And Artificial Intelligence-Based Modeling And Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms In Lake Pontchartrain, Ian Smith

LSU Master's Theses

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and particularly toxic cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) have become a growing threat to the environment, economy, communities, and human and animal health. This is particularly true for Lake Pontchartrain. Forecasting the occurrence of cyanobacterial HABs in Lake Pontchartrain is a process that currently does not exist, as nowcasting by the NCCOS Algal Bloom Monitoring System or the similar system implemented by the U.S. EPA is currently the only method to monitor HAB production in the Lake. This thesis made this process possible by identifying antecedent environmental conditions controlling CyanoHABs, describing the conditions using NASA satellite …

Missense vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKOR) mutations in patients cause resistance to warfarin treatment but not abnormal bleeding due to defective VKOR activity. The underlying mechanism of these phenotypes remains unknown. Here we show that the redox state of these mutants is essential to their activity and warfarin resistance. Using a mass spectrometry-based footprinting method, we found that severe warfarin-resistant mutations change the VKOR active site to an aberrantly reduced state in cells. Molecular dynamics simulation based on our recent crystal structures of VKOR reveals that these mutations induce an artificial opening of the protein conformation that increases access of …

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is widely hypothesized to result from disordered communication across brain-wide networks. Yet, prior resting-state-functional MRI (rs-fMRI) studies of MDD have studied zero-lag temporal synchrony (functional connectivity) in brain activity absent directional information. We utilize the recent discovery of stereotyped brain-wide directed signaling patterns in humans to investigate the relationship between directed rs-fMRI activity, MDD, and treatment response to FDA-approved neurostimulation paradigm termed Stanford neuromodulation therapy (SNT). We find that SNT over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) induces directed signaling shifts in the left DLPFC and bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Directional signaling shifts in the …

Mechanically Manipulating Glymphatic Transport By Ultrasound Combined With Microbubbles, Dezhuang Ye, Si Chen, Yajie Liu, Charlotte Weixel, Zhongtao Hu, Jinyun Yuan, Hong Chen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The glymphatic system is a perivascular fluid transport system for waste clearance. Glymphatic transport is believed to be driven by the perivascular pumping effect created by the pulsation of the arterial wall caused by the cardiac cycle. Ultrasound sonication of circulating microbubbles (MBs) in the cerebral vasculature induces volumetric expansion and contraction of MBs that push and pull on the vessel wall to generate a MB pumping effect. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether glymphatic transport can be mechanically manipulated by focused ultrasound (FUS) sonication of MBs. The glymphatic pathway in intact mouse brains was studied using …

The New Intersectional And Anti-Racist Lgbtqia + Politics: Some Thoughts On The Path Ahead, Marc Spindelman May 2023

The New Intersectional And Anti-Racist Lgbtqia + Politics: Some Thoughts On The Path Ahead, Marc Spindelman

ConLawNOW

This article examines the changes to LGBTQIA+ consciousness and the politics they are producing. One result of these consciousness shifts is the increasing number of LGBTQIA+-identified people and organizations reconstituting themselves, their identities, and their politics around pro-Black, anti-racist positions, and doing so as foundational elements of their LGBTQIA+ liberation work. At the same time as these developments are unfolding, however, they are on a collision course with emergent social conservative positions and obstacles. These obstacles include developments at a Supreme Court that is increasingly deciding based on constitutional originalism. This article begins to show how the Court’s conservative originalism …

Probabilistic Assessment Of Power Systems Resilience Under Natural Disasters, Enas M. Hegazy, Abdelfattah A. Eladl, Magdi M. El-Saadawi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Extreme weather can have a substantial influence on a power system's operational resilience since they are high-impact, low-probability (HILP) events. Therefore, Power systems must be resilient to HILP incidents in addition to being reliable against widely spread and credible threats. Despite the rarity of such events, the severity of their potential impact necessitates the development of appropriate resilience assessment tools to capture their implications and enhance the resilience of energy infrastructure systems. In this paper, a probabilistic strategy is proposed to assess and evaluate the operational resilience of power distribution networks against the impacts of HILP events depending on value-at-risk …

Defensive Publications Series

Within a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) fifth-generation (5G) environment, in the event of a failure in a core network a prime approach of any operator is to provide seamless service to a subscriber. Techniques are presented herein that support the delivery of seamless service to a subscriber in the event of such a failure. The presented techniques provide a mechanism for reconciling subscriber usage in an automated way without the need for a propriety solution, which becomes difficult when a Session Management Function (SMF) and a Charging Function (CHF) are provided by different vendors, thus raising an interoperability challenge.

Development Of A Low-Cost Tool For The Compositional Measurement Of Gases Derived From Mineral Water Wells From The Eastern Carpathians, Szalay Roland, Kis Boglárka-Mercedesz

Studia UBB Geologia

The Eastern Carpathians host CO2-rich, low temperature, dry gas vents, bubbling pools and wells/drillings, which were established for the extraction of mineral water and CO2 for the bottling industry. These wells can provide important information on the structure of the geological deposits, the depths, and the source of the gases, because they are often located at important geologic/tectonic sites. Our aim was to test the applicability of a hand-made and low-cost tool in preselected wells/drillings, in order to measure the concentration of different gas species. This was challenging due to the high water and gas discharge of …

Active Mapping Of Rectifier To Voltage Supply Phase, N/A May 2023

Active Mapping Of Rectifier To Voltage Supply Phase, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to automatically map rectifiers deployed in data center racks to their corresponding AC phases. Per techniques of this disclosure, rectifier AC phase mappings are determined actively by periodically deactivating and activating a rectifier, and observing the effects on respective phases of a three-phase supply connected to the rack where the rectifier is deployed. The rectifier is cycled through periodic deactivation and activation. Current series data for each phase of the three-phase power supply are obtained. Frequency components of the frequency used for actuation of the rectifier are recovered by applying a bandpass filter to the current …

Passive Mapping Of Rectifier To Voltage Supply Phase, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to automatically map rectifiers deployed in data center racks to their corresponding AC phases. Rectifier AC phase mappings are determined by correlating rectifier input AC voltage measurements with bus-level per-phase AC voltage measurements over time. Patterns in the voltage fluctuations are utilized to associate individual rectifiers with individual phases via statistical correlation of measured AC voltages at the rectifier level and bus level. Correlations between rectifier level and bus level voltages are performed for each phase of the power supply. The phase voltage series with the highest correlation to the rectifier voltage series is determined to …
