The massive galaxy cluster El Gordo (z = 0.87) imprints multitudes of gravitationally lensed arcs onto James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images. Eight bands of NIRCam imaging were obtained in the “Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science” (“PEARLS”) program. Point-spread function-matched photometry across Hubble Space Telescope and NIRCam filters supplies new photometric redshifts. A new light-traces-mass lens model based on 56 image multiplicities identifies the two mass peaks and yields a mass estimate within 500 kpc of (7.0 ± 0.30) × 1014 M ⊙. A search for substructure in the 140 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts …

Isolation And Identification Of Phage-Host Protein Interactions As Possible Mediators Of Mycobacteriophage Phayonce Gene Host Cytotoxicity, Matthew Defreitas Jul 2023

Isolation And Identification Of Phage-Host Protein Interactions As Possible Mediators Of Mycobacteriophage Phayonce Gene Host Cytotoxicity, Matthew Defreitas

Honors Theses

Bacteriophages are ubiquitous viruses containing extremely diverse genomes. Many phage genomes have been bioinformatically annotated; however, many genes lack wet-bench functional characterization. Elucidating individual phage gene function via the isolation of phage-host protein interactions allows for the exploration of novel antibacterial therapies within the context of phage-host biology. Mycobacteriophage Phayonce, infecting the host Mycobacterium smegmatis, encodes two cytotoxic gene, 41 and 64, which lack an annotated function. Using a bacterial two-hybrid screen along with the construction of fusion-protein expression vectors, multiple punitive phage-host protein interactions were isolated for both genes. Once these interactions were verified and sequenced, multiple host …

Impact Of Socioeconomic Values Collaboration On Performance In Franchising, Vivek K. Dubey, Joseph M. Matthes, Amit Saini Jul 2023

Impact Of Socioeconomic Values Collaboration On Performance In Franchising, Vivek K. Dubey, Joseph M. Matthes, Amit Saini

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Franchises exist within cultures and societies that establish distinct socioeconomic beliefs, values, opportunities, and threats, all of which can affect firms’ operational success. Disagreements between franchisees and franchisors about such social or economic issues potentially disrupt their cooperative equilibrium, whereas collaborations that prioritize shared socioeconomic values may facilitate successful long-term relationships. Using primary data, gathered through a survey of U.S. franchisees, the authors test a proposed model of franchisee performance. The structural equation modeling results reveal that socioeconomic values–based collaborations indirectly enhance performance, through their effects on customer relationship management cooperation and franchisor idiosyncratic investment. Control of local marketing mix …

Living Below The Line: Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Economic Security Among Older Americans, 2022, Jan Mutchler, Yan-Jhu Su, Nidya Velasco Roldán

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

New estimates based on the 2022 Elder IndexTM show that the risk of economic insecurity in later life is especially high for people of color. Comparing household incomes to the Elder Index, we calculate the percentage of independent older adults with incomes that fall short of what is required to support economic security. National averages suggest that among older people living alone, 43% who are White, 59% of those who are Asian, 61% of those who are Black, and 67% of those who are Latino have annual incomes below the Elder Index. The risk of economic insecurity is lower among …

The Hipaa Privacy Rule At Age 25: Privacy For Equitable Ai, Barbara J. Evans Jul 2023

The Hipaa Privacy Rule At Age 25: Privacy For Equitable Ai, Barbara J. Evans

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article argues that unconsented access to data is not ethically problematic in and of itself. What has made it problematic is the weak framework of alternative protections that the Privacy Rule prescribes when data are used without individual consent. This Article proposes specific measures to strengthen those protections so that the pursuit of greater health care equity need not imply a loss of meaningful privacy standards.

Part I describes two competing visions of how to protect data privacy, examining the roots of ongoing discontent with the Privacy Rule and tracing policymakers’ original rationale for fashioning a major federal privacy …

A Comparative Law Guide To A Post-Dobbs America, James Hart, Flore Foulon Jul 2023

A Comparative Law Guide To A Post-Dobbs America, James Hart, Flore Foulon

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned *Roe v. Wade* and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, necessitates a federal legislative solution to restore abortion rights. Drawing on France's civil law system, the article proposes a clear, comprehensive federal law that guarantees absolute abortion rights pre-viability and includes safeguards post-viability. It emphasizes the need for consistency and clarity, similar to France's approach, to address the legal void left by *Dobbs* and ensure uniform protections across all U.S. states.

Fair’S Fair: How Public Benefit Considerations In The Fair Use Doctrine Can Patch Bias In Artificial Intelligence Systems, Patrick K. Lin Jul 2023

Fair’S Fair: How Public Benefit Considerations In The Fair Use Doctrine Can Patch Bias In Artificial Intelligence Systems, Patrick K. Lin

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) expands relentlessly despite well documented examples of bias in AI systems, from facial recognition failing to differentiate between darker-skinned faces to hiring tools discriminating against female candidates. These biases can be introduced to AI systems in a variety of ways; however, a major source of bias is found in training datasets, the collection of images, text, audio, or information used to build and train AI systems. This Article first grapples with the pressure copyright law exerts on AI developers and researchers to use biased training data to build algorithms, focusing on the potential risk …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Different approaches for total hip arthroplasty (THA) may offer advantages in regard to achieving same-day-discharge (SDD) success.

Methods: We retrospectively identified patients aged ≥ 18 years who underwent elective primary THA from 2015 to 2020 who were formally enrolled in a single institution's SDD program. A total of 1,127 and 207 patients underwent THA via direct anterior approach and posterior approach, respectively, were included. Cohorts were assigned based on approach. The primary outcome was failure-to-launch, defined as hospital stay extending past 1 midnight. Secondary outcomes included Forgotten Joint Score-12, Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement, 90-day …

Solutions For Heirs Property Owners, Jesse J. Richardson Jr., Amber S. Miller Jul 2023

Solutions For Heirs Property Owners, Jesse J. Richardson Jr., Amber S. Miller

Law Faculty Scholarship

What are some solutions for heirs property owners? An offered solution assumes that there is a problem, and the first step must be clearly defining the problem. But, as the authors explain, the term "heirs property" proves difficult to define because of the vast number and scope of heirs property scenarios. Stated very simply, the term refers to a subset of tenancy in common property where the owners received concurrent interests in land through inheritance. But, heirs property is anything but simple. In fact, it is quite complex, beginning with the ownership picture of heirs property tracts of land: the …

A Comparison Of Confidence Intervals In State Space Models, Jinyu Du Jul 2023

A Comparison Of Confidence Intervals In State Space Models, Jinyu Du

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops general procedures for constructing confidence intervals (CIs) of the error disturbance parameters (standard deviations) and transformations of the error disturbance parameters in time-invariant state space models (ssm). With only a set of observations, estimating individual error disturbance parameters accurately in the presence of other unknown parameters in ssm is a very challenging problem. We attempted to construct four different types of confidence intervals, Wald, likelihood ratio, score, and higher-order asymptotic intervals for both the simple local level model and the general time-invariant state space models (ssm). We show that for a simple local level model, both the …

Evaluating An Mhealth Application For Cancer Survivors With Disabilities Through Usability Testing, Kevin Baez Jul 2023

Evaluating An Mhealth Application For Cancer Survivors With Disabilities Through Usability Testing, Kevin Baez

University Honors Program Senior Projects

The effect of cancer treatment can cause difficulties in a cancer survivor's life due to the risk of attaining a long-term disability which has potential negative cognitive, psychological, physical, and social consequences. Furthermore, post-treatment support has been shown to be severely limited, leaving many to deal with new obstacles and struggles on their own. With no real support system in place, cancer survivors with disabilities can be lost during post-cancer transition. However, mHealth interventions have been proven to effectively aid users in dealing with various health issues. We aim to support and empower cancer survivors through an application called, WeCanManage. …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Transgenic corn and cotton that produce Cry and Vip3Aa toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are widely planted in the United States to control lepidopteran pests. The sustainability of these Bt crops is threatened because the corn earworm/bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is evolving a resistance to these toxins. Using Bt sweet corn as a sentinel plant to monitor the evolution of resistance, collaborators established 146 trials in twenty-five states and five Canadian provinces during 2020–2022. The study evaluated overall changes in the phenotypic frequency of resistance (the ratio of larval densities in Bt ears relative to densities in non-Bt ears) …

Small Library Assessment Hills You Can Climb, Julene L. Jones

Library Presentations

Presenters will share achievable library assessment projects and give attendees the confidence to accomplish them as well! The projects reflect assessing cross-departmental foundation courses, benchmarking your institution’s data with peer data and presenting that in a dashboard, handling non-generalizable data, working with advisory boards or focus groups and gathering student feedback. All of the projects might be accomplished relatively quickly in a new assessment librarian’s first year or that could fit in with other responsibilities that those interested in assessment have.

Early Health Conditions, Family Processes, And Educational Achievements, Han Liu Jul 2023

Early Health Conditions, Family Processes, And Educational Achievements, Han Liu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines how childhood health affects children’s own and their siblings’ educational attainment through home environments and family processes. While health and socioeconomic status have been recognized as reinforcing dimensions of stratification in the past few decades, their linkage has not been contextualized in the critical social institution of families. To fill this gap in prior research, this project uses rich data on childhood health, home environments, academic achievement and educational attainment, sociodemographic background, and linkages between family members from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Children and Young Adults to (1) estimate the extent to which home …

Sibling Relationships: A Qualitative Analysis Of Typically Developing Siblings’ Feelings About Play Experiences With Their Sibling With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Andrea L. Gardner-Bixler Jul 2023

Sibling Relationships: A Qualitative Analysis Of Typically Developing Siblings’ Feelings About Play Experiences With Their Sibling With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Andrea L. Gardner-Bixler

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this study is to investigate and describe the present and past experiences of sibling play for siblings of children with autism. Narrative inquiry will provide participants a place for their voices, emotions, and actions to be heard, in hopes that we may glean better insight into seemingly invisible features of daily play within the sibling relationships. Because daily play is such an integral part of shaping social interactions, behaviors, and perceptions, it is important to better understand how siblings experience these potentially non-typical play experiences.

Understanding The Dynamics Of Accountability In The U.S. Public Sector, Jisang Kim Jul 2023

Understanding The Dynamics Of Accountability In The U.S. Public Sector, Jisang Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Building upon the historical Friedrich-Finer debate of the 1940s, this dissertation has shed light on the critical issue raised by these two scholars: the tension between accountability and autonomy inherent in public administration (PA). Over the last 80 years, the landscape of accountability in PA has dramatically changed due to the drastic expansion of the scope and role of government, which were never anticipated at the time of the debate. Many public administrators are now highly specialized experts dealing with complex issues, and holding them accountable for their actions and decisions has become much more challenging. Consequently, the unresolved tension …

Mining And Black-Box Learning Of Relationship-Based Access Control Policies, Ravishankar Padmavathi Iyer Jul 2023

Mining And Black-Box Learning Of Relationship-Based Access Control Policies, Ravishankar Padmavathi Iyer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Information systems collect a huge volume of data about individuals such as social interactions, health/educational records, etc. To protect such data and mitigate privacy risks, access control policies specify what actions different users are authorized to perform in a system. It is important to obtain an accurate specification of the access control policy implemented in a system to 1) safely and effectively use the system as end-users and 2) ensure that it meets developers' expectations of security/privacy. Unfortunately, most systems today do not come with a clearly documented access control policy. Even worse, the access controls implemented in a system …

Aims: This dissertation research explores incarceration experiences among adult women with drug addiction histories. It aims to enhance our knowledge of the meaning of incarceration and the prolonged influence of the experience on women’s drug addiction recovery, filling knowledge gaps regarding women, substance use, and incarceration. Methodology: The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with twenty-two (22) formerly incarcerated women in the Northeast and Midwest United States. A phenomenological approach was used to explore the meaning of incarceration to the participants; the deprivation model of imprisonment, the life course theory, intersectionality, and the therapeutic jurisprudence perspective guided the analysis. Findings: Women with …

Near-Optimal Motion Planning Algorithms Via A Topological And Geometric Perspective, Aakriti Kumari Upadhyay Jul 2023

Near-Optimal Motion Planning Algorithms Via A Topological And Geometric Perspective, Aakriti Kumari Upadhyay

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Motion planning is a fundamental problem in robotics, which involves finding a path for an autonomous system, such as a robot, from a given source to a destination while avoiding collisions with obstacles. The properties of the planning space heavily influence the performance of existing motion planning algorithms, which can pose significant challenges in handling complex regions, such as narrow passages or cluttered environments, even for simple objects. The problem of motion planning becomes deterministic if the details of the space are fully known, which is often difficult to achieve in constantly changing environments. Sampling-based algorithms are widely used among …
