Protection And Prevention: The Shortcomings Of U.S. Copyright Law In Combatting Cultural Appropriation In The Fashion Industry, Luke E. Steffe
Protection And Prevention: The Shortcomings Of U.S. Copyright Law In Combatting Cultural Appropriation In The Fashion Industry, Luke E. Steffe
IP Theory
American fashion represents an eclectic patchwork of diverse experiences and ideas; however, drawing upon Indigenous communities’ cultural identities and sacred traditions can easily cross the line between inspiration and appropriation. In reality, designs derived from culturally significant symbols, which have been stolen from Indigenous communities and stripped of their meaning, flood the American market. From runway shows to sports teams’ mascots to undergarment designs, these manifestations of cultural appropriation occur legally under the existing U.S. copyright regime, and adaptations to the current, Westernized system of intellectual property (IP) rights must integrate Indigenous perceptions of communal ownership with respect to their …

High temperatures have been shown to affect human cognition and decision-making in a variety of settings. In this paper, we explore the extent to which higher temperatures affect judicial decision-making in India. We use data on judicial decisions from the Indian eCourt platform, merged with high-resolution gridded daily weather data. We estimate causal effects by leveraging a fixed effects framework. We find that high daily maximum temperatures raise the likelihood of convictions and these results are robust to numerous controls and specifications. Our findings contribute to a growing literature that documents that the negative impacts of rising temperatures are often …
The Effect Of Safety Net Generosity On Maternal Mental Health And Risky Health Behaviors, Lucie Schmidt, Lara D. Shore-Sheppard, Tara Watson
The Effect Of Safety Net Generosity On Maternal Mental Health And Risky Health Behaviors, Lucie Schmidt, Lara D. Shore-Sheppard, Tara Watson
Economics: Faculty Publications
Single mothers are more likely to experience mental health problems and stress-related negative health behaviors, but a more generous safety net may improve these outcomes. We use a simulated safety net eligibility approach that accounts for interactions across safety net programs and relies on changing policies across states and time to identify causal effects of safety net generosity on psychological distress and risky behaviors of single mothers. Results suggest that a more generous safety net is protective of maternal mental health: a $1000 increase to the simulated potential combined cash and food benefit package reduces severe psychological distress by 8.4 …

Well-Conditioned T-Matrix Formulation For Scattering By A Dielectric Obstacle, Murat Enes Hati̇poğlu, Fati̇h Di̇kmen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The classic formulation of the extended boundary condition method is revisited to inject the regularization operators for the unknown coefficients of the eigen-function expansions for the travelling and standing waves throughout the dielectric scatterer. It is shown that, using the new definitions, the existing algorithm of the scattering field calculation can be kept the same for its well-conditioned version. This is exemplified for scalar 2D problems for both TM and TE polarization under illumination of a line source. The condition numbers of the matrix operators in the new version of the algorithm are drastically reduced when the regularization interfaces are …

Board Governance Of Strategic Change: An Assessment Of The Literature And Avenues For Future Research, Patricia Klamer, Qiwen Yu, Toru Yoshikawa, Michael Hitt
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Boards of directors play a central role in governing corporate strategic change. We systematically review corporate governance research on strategic change published over the past 40 years, differentiating between strategic change types and board characteristics. We identify three developments: a focus on specific strategic change types, board composition and structure, and North American listed firms as a dominant study context. Yet, our analysis of the literature shows that research on board governance of interrelated strategic changes, on different board roles and behaviour, and on the governance of strategic changes across different contexts remains underdeveloped. To address these research gaps, we …
Theorizing About The Implications Of Multiplexity: An Integrative Typology, Gokhan Ertug, Julia Brennecke, Stefano Tasselli
Theorizing About The Implications Of Multiplexity: An Integrative Typology, Gokhan Ertug, Julia Brennecke, Stefano Tasselli
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Multiplexity, the coexistence of more than one type of relationship between two actors, is a prevalent phenomenon with clear relevance for a wide range of management settings and phenomena. While there is a substantial body of work on multiplexity, the absence of a shared terminology and a typology for the mechanisms and arguments that are used in theorizing about its implications nevertheless hamper its appeal to organizational network scholars and slow its progress. Based on content analysis of 103 studies, we propose “relational harmony,” “task complementarity,” and “relational scope” as three categories to integrate the mechanisms and arguments used in …

INTRODUCTION: Filipino Americans are one of the largest Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations in the United States (US). Previous studies suggest that Filipino Americans have one of the highest incidence rates of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) among AAPI subgroups. Despite the expected increase in Filipino Americans with ADRD, no studies to-date have validated neuropsychological measures in the United States for speakers of Tagalog, a major language spoken by Filipino Americans. A significant barrier to dementia care and diagnosis is the lack of linguistically and socioculturally appropriate cognitive tasks for Tagalog speakers. To address this need, we …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We present a method to derive new explicit expressions for bidiagonal decompositions of Vandermonde and related matrices such as the (q-, h-) Bernstein-Vandermonde ones, among others. These results generalize the existing expressions for nonsingular matrices to matrices of arbitrary rank. For totally nonnegative matrices of the above classes, the new decompositions can be computed efficiently and to high relative accuracy componentwise in floating point arithmetic. In turn, matrix computations (e.g., eigenvalue computation) can also be performed efficiently and to high relative accuracy.

This article investigates the shear behaviour of Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) Z push-off specimens. Fifteen specimens with different replacement levels of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA = 0 %, 25 %, 50 %, 75 % and 100 %) were tested. It is shown that a 100 % RCA replacement level reduces shear strength by 17.3 %. The shear behaviour of the specimens was further analysed using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA). The results show that the shear strength results from the FEA and Digital Image Correlation measurements agree well (within 5 %) with the experimental results. This study proposes a new …
