Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research

High mortality rates in ovarian cancer have been linked to recurrence, metastasis, and chemoresistant disease, which are known to involve not only genetic changes but also epigenetic aberrations. In ovarian cancer, adipose-derived stem cells from the omentum (O-ASCs) play a crucial role in supporting the tumor and its tumorigenic microenvironment, further propagating epigenetic abnormalities and dissemination of the disease. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor derived from green tea, and Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a histone deacetylase inhibitor from cruciferous vegetables, carry promising effects in reprograming aberrant epigenetic modifications in cancer. Therefore, we demonstrate the action of these diet-derived compounds in …

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic, Lifestyle, And Health Care Determinants Of National Life Expectancies, Annie Feldman Jul 2023

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic, Lifestyle, And Health Care Determinants Of National Life Expectancies, Annie Feldman

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

Life expectancy is an important indicator of a population’s health and anticipated life-quality. Life expectancies have continued to rise in recent history, but there is great variance between countries. This paper analyzes potential reasons for country variation in the average human lifespan. Regression analysis is performed on data from 156 countries to infer explanations of observed variance. In this model, I chose factors from past research that have been highly significant. When selecting variables, I considered socio-economic, lifestyle, and health care financing measures. To explain national life expectancies, I tested variables including education, income, urban-to-rural living, alcohol and tobacco consumption, …

Identification Of Dialect For Eastern And Southwestern Ojibwe Words Using A Small Corpus, Kalvin Hartwig, Evan Lucas, Timothy C. Havens

Michigan Tech Publications

The Ojibwe language has several dialects that vary to some degree in both spoken and written form. We present a method of using support vector machines to classify two different dialects (Eastern and Southwestern Ojibwe) using a very small corpus of text. Classification accuracy at the sentence level is 90% across a five-fold cross validation and 72% when the sentence-trained model is applied to a data set of individual words. Our code and the word level data set are released openly at https://github.com/evanperson/OjibweDialect.

This two-wave prospective study applied the Social Influence in Sport Model to investigate whether the social influences of parents, physical education (PE) teachers, and peers were predictive of students' intention to engage in leisure-time physical activity (PA). Participants were 2,484 secondary school students (11–18 years old) who completed a questionnaire assessing positive influence, punishment, and dysfunction from the three social agents (parents, PE teachers, and peers) at baseline, and PA intention at a 1-month follow-up. Structural equation modelling (SEM) yielded excellent goodness-of-fit and consistent pathways between the three social agents. Students' leisure-time PA intention (R2 =.103 to 0.112) was positively …

Enhanced Degradation Of Methyl Orange And Trichloroethylene With Pnipam-Pmma-Fe/Pd-Functionalized Hollow Fiber Membranes, Rollie Mills, Cameron Tvrdik, Andrew Lin, Dibakar Bhattacharyya

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a prominent groundwater pollutant due to its stability, widespread contamination, and negative health effects upon human exposure; thus, an immense need exists for enhanced environmental remediation techniques. Temperature-responsive domains and catalyst incorporation in membrane domains bring significant advantages for toxic organic decontamination. In this study, hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) were functionalized with stimuli-responsive poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm), poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), and catalytic zero- valent iron/palladium (Fe/Pd) for heightened reductive degradation of such pollutants, utilizing methyl orange (MO) as a model compound. By utilizing PNIPAm’s transition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic expression above the LCST of 32 ◦C, increased pollutant diffusion …

Load Effects Of Truck Platooning On Existing Bridges In Oregon, Patricia Oleson

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Truck Platooning (TP) involves managing multiple trucks closely together to reduce aerodynamic drag. While TP offers benefits such as fuel savings, emission reductions, and enhanced safety, it raises concerns for existing infrastructure. This study reviews literature on TP and conducts bridge analyses comparing representative truck platoon configurations allowed under Oregon law with current truck loadings. It also explores the effects of truck head spacing and bridge span lengths, utilizing the research results to calculate rating factors using real-world case studies. The objective is to identify truck platoon configurations that may exceed acceptable load levels for Oregon bridges. The findings will …

Free Exercise Renewal And Conditions On Government Benefits, Thomas C. Berg Jul 2023

Free Exercise Renewal And Conditions On Government Benefits, Thomas C. Berg

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

When the government puts a condition on funding or other benefits that it provides, can it impose that condition on a recipient (organization or individual) whose religious character or tenets conflict with the condition? That question arises in some of today’s most prominent religious-freedom controversies, actual and potential. Conditions accompanying certain federal contracts and funding programs prohibit discrimination based on religion or sexual orientation; those conditions may prevent a recipient organization from requiring that its leaders or employees affirm or live consistently with its religious tenets. Even the highly uncertain prospect that the federal government might someday strip tax exemptions …

Assisted Suicide, Forced Cooperation, And Coercion: Reflections On A Brewing Storm, Lucia A. Silecchia Jul 2023

Assisted Suicide, Forced Cooperation, And Coercion: Reflections On A Brewing Storm, Lucia A. Silecchia

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

Because government funds to institutions and individuals finance a significant amount of medical care in the United States, the prospect of conditions or “strings” attached to that funding is an ever-present specter. Furthermore, the fact that institutions and individuals require licenses to provide medical care also raises these possibilities as the brave new world of medicine poses far more moral dilemmas than anticipated even a brief time ago.

This has led many institutions and individuals to refrain from various activities, believing that to do so would constitute direct or material cooperation in an evil activity. Their ability to avoid participation …
