Not A Student, Not An Athlete, A Person, Amanda L. Paule-Koba, Todd A. Gilson

School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

College athletics can place immense demands on athletes in terms of time commitment, physical conditioning, and pressure to perform. However, one important but less visible dimension affected by participation is one’s identity. College athletes hold multiple identities (Sturm et al., 2011) and these identities are further refined through their experiences (Chang et al., 2018). However, much less is known about athletes’ cognitive awareness of others’ perceptions and how those opinions influence athletes’ sense of self. In the present work, 52 Division I collegiate basketball players took part in a qualitative survey focused on understanding their athletic experience based on interactions …

Empirical Study Of Machine Learning For Intelligent Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Armin Moghadam, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki Jul 2023

Empirical Study Of Machine Learning For Intelligent Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Armin Moghadam, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki

General Engineering

Bearing failure highly impacts performance and production of manufacturing systems, causes safety incidents, and results in casualties and property loss. According to the current literature, bearing faults cause 30-40% of all failures in induction motors. Therefore, identification of bearing faults, at early stages, is crucial to ensure seamless and reliable operation of induction motors in industrial and manufacturing operations. Faults occur in four components of bearing: inner race, outer race, ball, and cage. Regardless of the component in which fault occurs, it causes changes in vibration signals. Therefore, comparing normal signals with faulty ones is helpful in detecting localized faults …

Ensemble Of Handcrafted Features Of Environment Sound Classification Using A Deep Convolutional Neural Network To Enhance Accuracy And Reduce Computational Complexity, Ibrahim Abdulrahman Aljubayri

Theses and Dissertations

Environmental sound classification (ESC) is an area of active research in signal and image processing that has made significant strides over the past several years. The goal of ESC is to classify environmental sounds by extracting and analyzing handcrafted and deep features from various acoustic events. The task is complex because environmental sounds are typically unstructured, nonstationary, and overlapping. Multiple deep learning (DL) approaches have successfully tackled the ESC problem and outperformed conventional classifiers like k-nearest neighbors (kNN) or support vector machine (SVM). However, most DL approaches have high computational costs, making them unsuitable for use in embedded systems applications. …

Recognizing And Reporting Of Child Maltreatment In A Pediatric Primary Care Setting., Jennifer L. Dumey Jul 2023

Recognizing And Reporting Of Child Maltreatment In A Pediatric Primary Care Setting., Jennifer L. Dumey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Child abuse and neglect, together known as child maltreatment, is a global problem with grim lifelong consequences (WHO, n.d.). Education and confidence in reporting child maltreatment are imperative for medical providers who are responsible for the evaluation of children during routine visits with pediatric providers. Research continues to link child maltreatment with adverse health outcomes that span throughout a person's lifetime. For this reason, medical providers must be provided with continued education on early recognition and reporting of concerns for child maltreatment.

The purpose of this project is to increase provider knowledge on the identification and reporting of child maltreatment. …

Boundary Setting As A Non-Binary Librarian And Facilitator, Amy Gilgan

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

In this chapter, I will reflect on the challenges of naming my trans* identity in library spaces and facilitating discussions on gender identity as a genderqueer person. I examine the why, when and how I share my gender identity alongside my racial identity. My library instruction is influenced by my work as an intergroup dialogue facilitator and mediator. Intergroup dialogue pedagogy invites both the facilitators and participants to examine the ways in which their social identity development impacts how they see themselves and others. According to Jackson and Hardiman’s Social Identity Development Model, there is a stage of resistance in …

Facilitation Skills For Critical Library Instruction (Book Chapter), Amy Gilgan Jul 2023

Facilitation Skills For Critical Library Instruction (Book Chapter), Amy Gilgan

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

Critical library instruction draws from Freirean pedagogy in which students engage in dialogic learning. As such, librarians who strive to bring critical pedagogy into libraries must build their capacity to facilitate dialogue. Drawing from both intergroup dialogue pedagogy and multi-partial mediation, this chapter will outline tools for facilitating dialogue in library instruction. Intergroup dialogue is a scaffolded four stage model in which participants build community norms and communication skills, engage with social identity, apply communication skills to conversations about power, and strategize next steps for building solidarity. In contrast to neutrality, multi-partial mediation names and attempts to address power dynamics …

There Are No Unconstitutional Conditions On Free Exercise, Michael A. Helfand Jul 2023

There Are No Unconstitutional Conditions On Free Exercise, Michael A. Helfand

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

Maybe no passage about the unconstitutional conditions doctrine is quite as memorable as the judgment rendered by Adam Cox and Adam Samaha: “You can easily question the judgment of anyone who writes a paper, even an essay, with ‘unconstitutional conditions’ in the title. The topic is very 1980s and scholars lost their enthusiasm for it not long after the Go-Go’s broke up.”

And yet, recent court decisions—and the government response to them—have thrust the doctrine back onto the scholarly agenda. At the center of this renewed interest is a series of recent Supreme Court cases prohibiting exclusion of religion and …

Religious Liberty For Religious Child-Welfare Organizations: Promises And Perils, Asma T. Uddin Jul 2023

Religious Liberty For Religious Child-Welfare Organizations: Promises And Perils, Asma T. Uddin

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

In the 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court held that states cannot deny same-sex couples access to marriage and its accompanying benefits. Some religious communities with traditional beliefs about marriage and sexuality responded to the ruling with strong concerns about its potential impact on their religious exercise.

One area of concern involved religious child-welfare organizations that work with the state to provide these services. In all states, there are two options for prospective parents seeking to adopt children. In the private system, birth parents voluntarily place their child up for adoption through a private organization. In …

Understanding The Leaders Of Tomorrow: The Need To Study Leadership In Adolescence, Jennifer L. Tackett, Kathleen W. Reardon, Nathanael J. Fast, Lars Johnson

Psychology Faculty Publications

Leadership traits and behaviors are observed early in human development, and although an improved understanding of youth leadership would usefully inform many real-world contexts (e.g., education, parenting, policy), most empirical work on leadership has been limited to adult populations. The purpose of the current article is to add a developmental perspective to leadership research that has so far been absent. Here, we (a) highlight adolescence as a critical developmental period for leadership emergence and development, (b) argue that leadership among youths is poorly understood and critically understudied, (c) provide exemplars of synergy between research on leadership and adolescent development that …
