Mysterizing Religion, Marc O. Degirolami Jul 2023

Mysterizing Religion, Marc O. Degirolami

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

A mystery of faith is a truth of religion that escapes human understanding. The mysteries of religion are not truths that human beings happen not to know, or truths that they could know with sufficient study and application, but instead truths that they cannot know in the nature of things. In the Letter to the Colossians, St. Paul writes that as a Christian apostle, his holy office is to “bring to completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past.” Note that Paul does not say that his task is to make everybody …

What Is Reciprocity?: A Review And Expert-Based Classification Of Cooperative Transfers, Diego Guevara Beltran, Jessica D. Ayers, Andres Munoz, Lee Cronk, Athena Aktipis

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

After decades of research on the topic of reciprocity, there is still no consensus about the meaning of the term. Instead, there has been a proliferation of reciprocity terms with varied definitions, some of which overlap in ways that lead to confusion for scholars studying cooperation. In this paper, we provide a summary of 34 reciprocity terms and their definitions from across a variety of disciplines. We then report the results of a survey of cooperation experts spanning biology, anthropology, economics, sociology, and psychology (N = 85) about the extent to which they consider 30 of these definitions of …

Organizing The Process, Erika Arellano Jul 2023

Organizing The Process, Erika Arellano

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

The capstone project that I chose to complete for this semester is program organization. Our developmental preschool program offers services for children with disabilities from three to five years of age. Having a well-organized and structured program is a foundational must as so much time is consumed with paperwork and meetings. As a first-year preschool teacher, I started the school year with more questions than answers, and answers that confused me even more. The way it is currently set up is with piles and piles of loose files stacked up on a desk, and post-it notes with all sorts of …

In-House Preparation, Outsourcing, Or Offshoring Of Tax Services To Third-Party Service Providers: Does Disclosure To The Client Matter?, Renu Desai, Vikram Desai, Julia Davidyan, Andrew Felo Jul 2023

In-House Preparation, Outsourcing, Or Offshoring Of Tax Services To Third-Party Service Providers: Does Disclosure To The Client Matter?, Renu Desai, Vikram Desai, Julia Davidyan, Andrew Felo

HCBE Faculty Articles

The AICPA’s Code of Professional Conduct (the “Code”) requires that if a member intends to use the services of a third party service provider (TPSP), the client should be informed. However, the wording in the Code is not mandatory via the use of must. In addition, there is no differentiation between disclosures of outsourcing tax return preparation versus offshoring tax return preparation. This could be considered a significant area of concern because there are ethical considerations with disclosure, or lack thereof, and the economic considerations involved in offshoring of returns that are distinctly different from outsourcing returns within the U.S. …

In this study, we delve into the public diplomacy discourse of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the ongoing crisis of the Russo-Ukrainian War. We aim to conduct a computational analysis of Zelenskyy's English, Russian, and Ukrainian speeches, exploring the linguistic patterns and code-switching employed in his discourse. The study period encompasses Russia’s build-up to and full-scale invasion of Ukraine from May 2019 to May 30, 2023. This time frame is crucial as it captures the dynamic development of the crisis and the expansion of Zelenskyy's presidency, providing a unique context for analyzing his public diplomacy efforts. By utilizing Linguistic Inquiry …

Design Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering Variability In Tensile Strength Of Bamboo, Bibek Bhardwaj, Michael Stoner, Weichiang Pang Jul 2023

Design Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering Variability In Tensile Strength Of Bamboo, Bibek Bhardwaj, Michael Stoner, Weichiang Pang

Publications

In recent years, the price of steel has soared, making steel reinforcement in concrete structures unaffordable for households in low-income countries. Seismic activities in low-income households, particularly those in developing countries, pose a significant threat to life and property to unreinforced concrete structures. The application of bamboo as an alternative to steel in reinforced concrete is still in its early stages of development. Unlike steel, bamboo is a natural material, and its structural properties vary greatly based on species, location, age, and geometric properties. Thus, the design of bamboo-reinforced concrete involves more uncertainties than steel-reinforced concrete. This research investigates the …

Bridging The Transition To Housing: A Social Justice Framework To Guide The Practice Of Occupational Therapists And Other Professionals Who Support Individuals With Experiences Of Homelessness (2nd Ed), Carrie Marshall, Rebecca Gewurtz, Skye Barbic, Laurence Roy, Abrial Cooke, Rosemary Lysaght

Occupational Therapy Publications

Occupational therapists have been supporting individuals who experience homelessness for several decades in their roles as community mental health therapists, on in-patient units, in traumatic brain injury programs, and in multiple other roles. Only recently, however, has this area of practice been acknowledged as distinct. Homelessness is growing in several high and middle-income countries worldwide. Occupational therapists have increasingly expressed an interest in gaining the knowledge and skills to effectively support individuals who experience homelessness, and in recent years, research in occupational therapy that focuses specifically on persons who experience homelessness has grown. The majority of individuals who have been …

“Source?” “I Made It Up”: The Ethics Of Citing Chatgpt In Academia, Carling Dekay

Final Projects Summer 2023

With the rapid growth of language-learning models like ChatGPT, academia has been forced to reckon with the way the tool can be used as a citation source. However, given the secrecy of the tool's dataset and its inability to provide sources for the information it provides, the question of if using it is plagiarism has become more pressing. Examining fanfiction as a source for how plagiarism and AI has been dealt with, the paper examines the paradox of citing ChatGPT and other models like it and the central question of how and when we can use it and use it …

Final Projects Summer 2023

This paper focuses on understanding if public libraries can and should form deeper relationships with wargaming and modelling hobby communities. Already adjacent to maker communities, wargaming and modelling communities often exist in third spaces that are explicitly paid. Libraries may want to consider partnering with local communities to promote miniature painting and hobbying.

Ai And Library Programming, Harmeen Singh Jul 2023

Ai And Library Programming, Harmeen Singh

Final Projects Summer 2023

Emerging technologies have impacted the ways in which public libraries exist. From e-books, to 3D printing, and everything in between, gone are the times when libraries housed just books. And now with AI landing on the scene, public librarians are watching to see just how the new technology will change the library world again. While AI programs such as ChatGPT have made their impact obvious for some institutions, such as universities and academic writing, it is less obvious for how they may work in a public library space. Often times, when the conversation of AI and libraries comes up, it …

The Dark Side Of Giving: Examining The Relationship Between The Dark Tetrad And Charitable Behavior, Bruno Bonfá-Araujo, Bonnie Simpspon, Julie Aitken Schermer

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

While the relationships between aversive personality traits and prosocial behavior still leave a lot up for debate, typically, people with a darker personality tend not to be associated with prosocial behavior. Interestingly, a few studies have found that behaving prosocially is not incompatible with the Dark Tetrad. In this study, we examine the relationships between the Dark Tetrad (subclinical narcissism and psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and everyday sadism) and charitable giving. Individuals (N = 529) completed measures of the Dark Tetrad, the Big Five, and individual charitable giving questions. Direct-entry regression revealed that everyday sadism positively predicted keeping more money …

"Migraine Journeys: An Exploration in Connecting Cultures" is a research project that looks at headaches from different cultures. Through the blog "Beyond Migraine Pain," this project looks at how different cultures use language, how they think about headaches, and how they treat them. The goal is to shed light on how migraines affect people and communities around the world and get rid of the stigmas that come with this disease. Such as women only being the only ones to get migraines and not men, the fact that very simple everyday actions can manage migraines because they aren’t “that serious”, and …

Fundraisers For Pajamas For Residents At Deasano Assisted Living, Melissa Ruvalcaba

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

After brainstorming and drawing on my final proposal for my project in 492, I decided that I either created two different kinds of fundraisers for those in need at Desano Assisted living or I create an event where people donate essentials for the nursing home. I came to the conclusion that creating fundraisers and providing the residents with their needs/wants from the funds raised was more beneficial. Raising money myself is going to give me the opportunity to provide the residents with personalized items that will provide them with a better quality of life. It has and will continue to …
