Three’S A Crowd: Conflicts Of Interest In Third- Party Preparation Of Environmental Impact Statements And Evolving Agency Responsibility Under Nepa, Colleen Mcgrath Jul 2023

Three’S A Crowd: Conflicts Of Interest In Third- Party Preparation Of Environmental Impact Statements And Evolving Agency Responsibility Under Nepa, Colleen Mcgrath

UC Law Environmental Journal

Although the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is designed to promote accountability and transparency about the environmental impacts of large-scale government projects, the lack of oversight over the production of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) can result in incomplete or biased reports, especially when the EIS is prepared by a third party that has financial or organizational ties to the project. As such, this paper investigates the inherent conflicts of interest that arise when third parties prepare EIS and how that lack of impartiality can undermine the credibility of environmental assessments, erode public trust, and diminish the effectiveness of NEPA as …

Ethical Considerations Surrounding Vaccine Development During A Public Health Crisis, Syed Arsalan Akhter Zaidi, Kainat Saleem, Rahul Bollam, Bushra Zaidi

Journal of Health Ethics

Epidemics and Pandemics have been plaguing mankind since many centuries, and are a cause of major healthcare expense in modern times. The novel coronavirus pandemic of 2019-2020 spread worldwide faster than many previous pandemics, including EBOLA in 2017. Although personal protective equipment, and social distancing slowed the outbreak, a vaccine is needed to ensure global immunization and to stop this deadly outbreak. Developing a vaccine in times of a public health crisis comes with a lot of ethical considerations, including overlooking proper informed consent, the issue of using placebo in control arm of trials, extended timelines of development of vaccines, …

A Framework For Personal Respiratory Ethics, Ian W. Goddard Jul 2023

A Framework For Personal Respiratory Ethics, Ian W. Goddard

Journal of Health Ethics

The Covid-19 pandemic raises the need for an ethical framework that addresses the unique ethical challenges and questions arising from airborne infectious diseases. For example, are we ever ethically obliged to wear a face mask? If so, why and when? The Respiratory Ethics Framework (REF) herein proposes pathways to answers grounded in ethical norms and the moral principles of non-harm, beneficence and respect for personal autonomy. REF is a personal ethics wherein your ethical duty to increase your respiratory hygiene efforts—such as by donning a mask—is proportional to your estimation of an increase in the likelihood that your respiratory effluent …

Improved Burned Area Mapping Using Monotemporal Landsat-9 Imagery And Convolutional Shift-Transformer, Seyd Teymoor Seydi, Mojtaba Sadegh Jul 2023

Improved Burned Area Mapping Using Monotemporal Landsat-9 Imagery And Convolutional Shift-Transformer, Seyd Teymoor Seydi, Mojtaba Sadegh

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Satellite imagery, specifically Landsat, have been widely used for mapping and monitoring wildfire burned areas. The new Landsat-9 satellite – with higher radiometric resolution compared to its predecessors, and improved temporal resolution when combined with Landsat-8 (∼8 days) – enables a wide range of applications, particularly burned area mapping (BAM). We propose a novel deep learning BAM model that leverages the strengths of the convolutional layers for deep feature generation from Landsat-9 imagery and shift-transformer block for burned area classification. The performance of the model is evaluated in five large fire case studies across the globe. BAM results are also …

Increasing Music Therapy Referrals In A Surgical Intensive Care Unit., Brandi Cecil

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Medications have been the primary intervention in intensive care unit patients due to the fact that the patients are often unconscious, critically medically ill, or unable to actively participate in nonpharmacological treatment. Researchers have found the integration of music therapy in patient care has helped ease pain, anxiety, and stress, and has been useful in vital control, such as decreasing heart rate and respiration count. A study was conducted in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) to examine the benefits of increasing music therapy consults. Critical care nurses were educated on the advantages of utilizing interdisciplinary care by consulting music …

Effectiveness Of An Electronic Health Record Embedded Evidence-Based Testing Algorithm For Clostridioides Difficile Infection., Sarah Marie Bishop Jul 2023

Effectiveness Of An Electronic Health Record Embedded Evidence-Based Testing Algorithm For Clostridioides Difficile Infection., Sarah Marie Bishop

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) commonly impacts hospitalized patients with almost half a million cases reported in the United States annually. C. difficile colonization is more common than infection. Identifying true infection versus colonization is critical to avoiding inappropriate treatment, unnecessary exposure to antibiotics, and increased cost of care. Implementation of evidenced-based CDI testing criteria can help reduce inappropriate CDI testing and avoid the misidentification of colonized patients as true CDI.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an evidence-based electronic health record (EHR) integrated CDI testing algorithm in reducing inappropriate CDI testing among adult …

More Than Mere Lip Service: A Mansfield Rule For Well-Being, Cecilia A. Silver Jul 2023

More Than Mere Lip Service: A Mansfield Rule For Well-Being, Cecilia A. Silver

Michigan Law Review Online

Law firms’ watchword is well-being. “Never in history have organizations around the world devoted so much attention and capital to improving employee mental health and well-being. It is lamentable that these investments are not always providing a good return regarding improved outcomes.” In the legal arena, a 2021 report from the Institute for Well-Being in Law echoed this sentiment, determining that while 99 percent of law firms have some type of well-being program, these measures did little to nothing to address internal, structural issues that perpetuate the lack of attorney well-being.

Can News Literacy Help Reduce Belief In Covid Misinformation?, Seth Ashley, Stephanie Craft, Adam Maksl, Melissa Tully, Emily K. Vraga

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

The rapid spread of misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased calls for news literacy to help mitigate endorsement of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and other falsehoods. In two cross-sectional online surveys conducted in October 2020 (N = 1,502) and July 2021 (N = 1,330), this study examines relationships between news literacy, COVID-19 misinformation, conspiratorial thinking, and political orientation in the United States. The results show that individuals with higher levels of news literacy were more likely to reject COVID-19 misinformation and conspiratorial thinking, but also that news literacy matters more for individuals with liberal political views than conservative …

In Their Words: Student Reflections On Information-Seeking Behaviors, Sarah P.C. Dahlen, Kathlene Hanson Jul 2023

In Their Words: Student Reflections On Information-Seeking Behaviors, Sarah P.C. Dahlen, Kathlene Hanson

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Academic librarians try to facilitate student information seeking by providing classroom instruction, creating tutorials and guides, and selecting and modifying search tools to best meet student needs and preferences. These efforts are often informed by interactions with students, and can be even better informed through analysis of student descriptions of their searching practices. In this case study, 50 upper-division students from the Social and Behavioral Sciences major completed searching tasks in a few library search tools and were then interviewed about their search behaviors, both in the experimental setting and in general. Their responses illuminate some of their tendencies, including …
