Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Purpose: Orbital [99mTc]TcDTPA orbital single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT is an important method for assessing inflammatory activity in patients with Graves’ orbitopathy (GO). However, interpreting the results requires substantial physician workload. We aim to propose an automated method called GO-Net to detect inflammatory activity in patients with GO. Materials and methods: GO-Net had two stages: (1) a semantic V-Net segmentation network (SV-Net) that extracts extraocular muscles (EOMs) in orbital CT images and (2) a convolutional neural network (CNN) that uses SPECT/CT images and the segmentation results to classify inflammatory activity. A total of 956 eyes from 478 patients with GO …

Sociocultural Barriers For Female Participation In Stem: A Case Of Saudi Women In Cybersecurity, Alanoud Aljuaid, Xiang Michelle Liu
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforces is overwhelmingly low as compared to their male counterparts. The low uptake of cybersecurity careers has been documented in the previous studies conducted in the contexts of the West and Eastern worlds. However, most of the past studies mainly covered the Western world leaving more knowledge gaps in the context of Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia. Thus, to fill the existing knowledge gaps, the current study focused on women in Saudi Arabia. The aim of the study was to investigate the factors behind the underrepresentation of …

There is a debate whether invasive plants can induce extinction debt in native flora that is not immediately obvious. Competitive effects of invasions and how competition causes native biodiversity loss are complicated to evaluate. Experi-mental removal or introduction bears the most promise of demonstrating native species displacement mechanics. Over an eight- year period, we followed plots in the only remaining Scalesia pedunculata forest on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, where invading Rubus niveus was either removed or retained. Demographic param-eters and total recruitment failure in the presence of R. niveus suggest that S. pedun-culata may face local extinction in two decades …

The meningeal lymphatic network enables the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and facilitates the removal of central nervous system (CNS) waste. During aging and in Alzheimer's disease, impaired meningeal lymphatic drainage promotes the buildup of toxic misfolded proteins in the CNS. Reversing this age-related dysfunction represents a promising strategy to augment CNS waste clearance; however, the mechanisms underlying this decline remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that age-related alterations in meningeal immunity underlie this lymphatic impairment. Single-cell RNA sequencing of meningeal lymphatic endothelial cells from aged mice revealed their response to IFNγ, which was increased in the aged meninges due to …
Psychological Perspectives On The Presentation Of Video Evidence: How Perceivers Weight What Is Seen And Unseen, Yael Granot, David Igliozzi
Psychological Perspectives On The Presentation Of Video Evidence: How Perceivers Weight What Is Seen And Unseen, Yael Granot, David Igliozzi
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Video evidence is proliferating in the courtroom, outpacing the incremental advances in policies governing its use. Psychological research on attention and perception indicates that people are vulnerable to numerous biases in how they interpret video. The dynamic format of such evidence directs attention in distinct ways, and the visual system selectively captures some pieces of information at the expense of others. Thus, perceivers who must make decisions about video evidence are vulnerable to overweighting the information they see, underweighting the information they do not see, and being overconfident about their interpretation of what they see. We marshal emerging research on …

Cast Iron Repair Through Directed Energy Deposition And Ancillary Processing Modes, Jakob D. Hamilton
Cast Iron Repair Through Directed Energy Deposition And Ancillary Processing Modes, Jakob D. Hamilton
Theses
A cast iron repair process that restores above 80% of the original tensile strength without thermal pre-conditioning is presented. Cast iron, an integral alloy to transportation and agricultural sectors, is a difficult alloy to repair owing to the presence of discrete graphite flakes and the tendency to form brittle iron-carbide phases and porosity. Preheating and post-process annealing assist in preventing premature fracturing but are economically and environmentally impractical for large castings. Thus, methods that circumvent these limitations while avoiding defect formation are crucial. Laser-based directed energy deposition (DED) offers a highly controllable method of remanufacturing cast iron and high carbon …

High-Temperature Phonon-Assisted Upconversion Photoluminescence Of Monolayer Wse2, Fengkai Meng, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Phonon-assisted up conversion photoluminescence (UPL) is an anti-Stokes process emitting photons of energy higher than the excitation photons, with up conversion energy gain provided by optical phonons. Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides provide a promising platform for exploring the phonon-assisted UPL process due to their strong phonon-exciton interactions. Here, high-temperature phonon-assisted UPL process in monolayer WSe2 is investigated, aiming to understand the role of phonon population and the number of phonons involved in the UPL process at elevated temperatures. It is demonstrated that the integrated intensity of UPL emission significantly increases by two orders of magnitude as the temperature rises …

The future of AI-assisted individualized learning includes computer vision to inform intelligent tutors and teachers about student affect, motivation and performance. Facial expression recognition is essential in recognizing subtle differences when students ask for hints or fail to solve problems. Facial features and classification labels enable intelligent tutors to predict students’ performance and recommend activities. Videos can capture students’ faces and model their effort and progress; machine learning classifiers can support intelligent tutors to provide interventions. One goal of this research is to support deep dives by teachers to identify students’ individual needs through facial expression and to provide immediate …

Isolation Of Genomic Dna From Mammalian Cells And Fixed Tissue, Kristy L.S. Miskimen, Penelope L. Miron
Faculty Scholarship
Examination of DNA variation is central to understanding the function of mammalian cells, tissues, and whole bodies. Extraction of high‐quality DNA from cells and tissues is necessary for innumerable different experiments. We present protocols for the extraction of DNA from both fresh samples and formalin‐fixed tissue. Methods for extracting DNA have been standardized and streamlined over the past couple of decades and many extraction kits are available for a reasonable cost. In addition, many of the extraction procedures can also be automated for even higher throughput sample preparation.

How Effective Are Seta Programs Anyway: Learning And Forgetting In Security Awareness Training, David Sikolia, David Biros, Tianjian Zhang
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Prevalent security threats caused by human errors necessitate security education, training, and awareness (SETA) programs in organizations. Despite strong theoretical foundations in behavioral cybersecurity, field evidence on the effectiveness of SETA programs in mitigating actual threats is scarce. Specifically, with a broad range of cybersecurity knowledge crammed into in a single SETA session, it is unclear how effective different types of knowledge are in mitigating human errors in a longitudinal setting. his study investigates how knowledge gained through SETA programs affects human errors in cybersecurity to fill the longitudinal void. In a baseline experiment, we establish that SETA programs reduce …

Spatiotemporal Walking Gait Kinematics Of Semi-Arboreal Red Pandas (Ailurus Fulgens), Maura R. Plocek, Noah T. Dunham
Student Scholarship
Semi-arboreal mammals must routinely cope with the differing biomechanical challenges of terrestrial versus arboreal locomotion; however, it is not clear to what extent semi-arboreal mammals adjust footfall patterns when moving on different substrates. We opportunistically filmed quadrupedal locomotion (n = 132 walking strides) of semi-arboreal red pandas (Ailurus fulgens; n = 3) housed at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and examined the effects of substrate type on spatiotemporal gait kinematic variables using linear mixed models. We further investigated the effects of substrate diameter and orientation on arboreal gait kinematics. Red pandas exclusively used lateral sequence (LS) gaits and most frequently utilized LS …

Private Equity Blues: Warner Music Group, Nonesuch Records, And Jazz In The Era Of Financialization, Dale Chapman
All Faculty Scholarship
Since the 1980s, the Nonesuch label, a longstanding subsidiary of the Warner Music Group (WMG), has become noteworthy for its steady market performance during a period of volatility for media multinationals. Nonesuch Records, having once been an adventurous boutique classical label under Teresa Sterne, has developed over the last three decades as a creatively idiosyncratic and commercially successful adult imprint under Robert Hurwitz, the erstwhile director of the Munich-based Edition of Contemporary Music jazz label. Nonesuch has not historically been understood as a jazz label, though it has served as a home for a few jazz acts, including Bill Frisell, …
Enough Is Enough: Salvage Procedures In Severe Periprosthetic Joint Infection, Yves Gramlich, Javad Parvizi
Enough Is Enough: Salvage Procedures In Severe Periprosthetic Joint Infection, Yves Gramlich, Javad Parvizi
Rothman Institute Papers
Background
In severe cases of periprosthetic joint infection involving negative host-dependent factors, individual-based decisions between a curative therapy vs. salvage procedure are necessary. We aimed to review salvage procedures in severe periprosthetic joint infection cases, where a gold standard of a curative two-stage exchange can no longer be achieved. The options of knee arthrodesis, amputation, persistent fistula (stable drainage), or a debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention procedure in late-onset cases are discussed, including lifelong antibiotic suppression alone.
Methods
We focused on known salvage procedures for severe periprosthetic joint infection of the hip and knee, such as amputation, arthrodesis, antibiotic …

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Application Efficacy In The World Of An Athlete: Addressing Special Considerations, John P. Ferraro
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
The current project aimed to analyze the potential that Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST) could have on the student-athlete population. The project necessitated a research exploration of both DBT and sports psychology treatment. This was accomplished by searching Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Library’s extensive databases, such as Academic Search Complete, PsycINFO, SportDISCUS, and Psycharticles. Considerations are discussed on athlete-specific concerns, such as stigma, athlete cultural views on mental health, eating disorders, coping through injury, and performance anxiety. Current sport psychology interventions are reviewed, and they are compared with the efficacy of DBT treatment literature. Similarities in sport psychology interventions …

Telehealth: Visual Adaptations For Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act), Caycie Smith
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic led to an influx in therapeutic services provided via web-based “telehealth” platforms. Some therapeutic treatments that were traditionally offered in-person needed to be adapted for telehealth platforms. After virtually beginning ACT with a client who struggled to grasp the material, the ACT PowerPoints were created as an adaptation of an in-person treatment to help the client learn and retain the information. In addition to the ACT PowerPoints, in-session worksheets and homework activities were created as well.
This document examines literature involving the effectiveness and benefits of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), telepsychotherapy, and visual aids. The goal …

Experimental Study: The Effect Of Pore Shape, Geometrical Heterogeneity, And Flow Rate On The Repetitive Two-Phase Fluid Transport In Microfluidic Porous Media, Seunghee Kim, Jingtao Zhang, Sangjin Ryu
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Geologic subsurface energy storage, such as porous-media compressed-air energy storage (PM-CAES) and underground hydrogen storage (UHS), involves the multi-phase fluid transport in structurally disordered or heterogeneous porous media (e.g., soils and rocks). Furthermore, such multi-phase fluid transport is likely to repeatedly occur due to successive fluid injections and extractions, thus, resulting in cyclic drainage–imbibition processes. To complement our preceding study, we conducted a follow-up study with microfluidic pore-network devices with a square solid shape (Type II) to further advance our understanding on the effect of the pore shape (aspect ratio, Type I: 5–6 > Type II: ~1), pore-space heterogeneity (coefficient of …

One of the most pressing challenges associated with SARS-CoV-2 treatment is the emergence of new variants that may be more transmissible, cause more severe disease, or be resistant to current treatments and vaccines. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a global pandemic, resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. Various strategies have been employed to combat the virus, including neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), CRISPR/Cas13, and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). While vaccines and small molecules have proven to be an effective means of preventing severe COVID-19 and reducing transmission rates, the emergence of new virus variants poses a challenge to their …

Terrorist threats and attacks provide major risks and sources of public crises in the 21st century. New probabilistic computing technologies possess the capability of increasing the success of identifying terrorist threats and solving cybersecurity and encryption problems more efficiently. However, to identify terrorist threats, these technologies would require the use of a large amount of personal data, which cause potential concerns for privacy. We offer a social-identity explanation of public support for the detection of terrorist threats through the use of online personal data. A survey study (N = 1,204) revealed strong support for the provided social-identity explanation of …

Thermal Performance Of Thin-Shell Concrete Dome Structures, Daira Sofia Velasco Vega
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The objective of this research is to evaluate an insulated concrete thin-shell dome structure for thermal flux with various depths of soil coverings. Computational thermal analysis is performed to model temperature fluctuations inside a representative section of an experimental concrete dome structure during all four seasons of northern Utah. The results are compared against the baseline of a traditional insulated wood-framed building envelope and indicate that thermal flux is significantly reduced in the earth-sheltered concrete dome structure with foam on the outside of the concrete. The addition of soil dampens the amplitude of the flux and increases the time lag …
