The Existence Of Solutions To A System Of Nonhomogeneous Difference Equations, Stephanie Walker
The Existence Of Solutions To A System Of Nonhomogeneous Difference Equations, Stephanie Walker
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
This article will demonstrate a process using Fixed Point Theory to determine the existence of multiple positive solutions for a type of system of nonhomogeneous even ordered boundary value problems on a discrete domain. We first reconstruct the problem by transforming the system so that it satisfies homogeneous boundary conditions. We then create a cone and an operator sufficient to apply the Guo-KrasnoselâA˘Zskii Fixed Point Theorem. The majority of the work involves developing the constraints ´ needed to utilized this fixed point theorem. The theorem is then applied three times, guaranteeing the existence of at least three distinct solutions. Thus, …

Head-Mounted Displays With Integrated Cameras To Capture 360-Degree Video, Ajit Narayanan
Defensive Publications Series
Capturing videos in 360 degrees currently requires use of a standalone 360-degree camera. Playback of such videos in 360 degrees requires a separate head-mounted device (HMD). In many 360-degree videos, the person controlling the camera is unintentionally visible, distracting the viewer. This disclosure describes techniques to overcome these barriers by equipping HMDs with the capability to capture 360-degree video cameras via multiple cameras positioned on the front, sides, and back of the HMD. Multiple, aligned videos are obtained by capturing images from the various cameras in the form of a video stream and aligned to provide a 360-degree video. Unintentionally …

Gerrymandering has affected U. S. politics since at least 1812. A political cartoon that year decried this tactic by then Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry. (Gerrymandering is manipulating the boundaries of districts to benefit a group unfairly.)
While we may feel we know a gerrymander when we see one, finding a meaningful metric has proven challenging. This article uses elementary mathematics to investigate the efficiency gap, a recent model proposed to measure gerrymandering.

Effects Of A High Salt Diet On Blood Pressure Dipping And The Implications On Hypertension, Jesse Viggiano, Dominic Joseph Coutinho, Maya Clark-Cutaia, Diana Martinez
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Salt intake has been shown to have a significant impact on BP, but the mechanisms by which it influences the blood pressure dipping pattern, and 24-h blood pressure remains controversial. This literature review aims to both summarize the current evidence on high salt diet induced hypertension and discuss the epidemiological aspects including socioeconomic issues in the United States and abroad. Our review indicates that a high salt diet is associated with a blunted nocturnal blood pressure dipping pattern, which is characterized by a reduced decrease …

The fission and fusion of mitochondria are important processes for maintaining mitochondrial health. One of the proteins responsible for mediating mitochondrial fusion, mitofusin 2 (MFN2), has over 100 known mutations that cause Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 2A (CMT2A). This disease causes the nerves that control your muscles to degenerate, leading to muscle atrophy and weakness, problems walking, and other related symptoms. In this paper, we describe a mouse line with a recessive mutation in the Mfn2 gene (Leu643Pro) that causes a similar set of symptoms, including abnormal gait, weight loss, and decreased muscular endurance. However, further analysis of these mice revealed …

Faculty Research 2023
BACKGROUND: A common feature of single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data is that the number of cells in a cell cluster may vary widely, ranging from a few dozen to several thousand. It is not clear whether scRNA-seq data from a small number of cells allow robust identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with various characteristics.
RESULTS: We addressed this question by performing scRNA-seq and poly(A)-dependent bulk RNA-seq in comparable aliquots of human induced pluripotent stem cells-derived, purified vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. We found that scRNA-seq data needed to have 2,000 or more cells in a cluster to identify the …

Management efforts to control starry stonewort [Nitellopsis obtusa (Desvaux in Loiseleur) J. Groves] have been limited to stressing the thalli and have not been able to directly target the reproductive bulbils. Smaller-scale efforts such as the use of hand pulling can be employed, but hand pulling is not realistic for larger infestations. This research was conducted to test the effects of clipping stress on N. obtusa to provide a baseline for the effect of stress on the production of bulbils and the regrowth of thalli. Mesocosms were set up under greenhouse conditions to test the effects on N. obtusa of …

EGFR signaling initiates upon ligand binding which leads to activation and internalization of the receptor-ligand complex. Here, we evaluated if BUB1 impacted EGFR signaling by regulating EGFR receptor internalization and activation. BUB1 was ablated genomically (siRNA) or biochemically (2OH-BNPP1) in cells. EGF ligand was used to initiate EGFR signaling while disuccinimidyl suberate (DSS) was used for cross linking cellular proteins. EGFR signaling was measured by western immunoblotting and receptor internalization was evaluated by fluorescent microscopy (pEGFR (pY1068) colocalization with early endosome marker EEA1). siRNA mediated BUB1 depletion led to an overall increase in total EGFR levels and more phospho-EGFR (Y845, …

Narratives play a powerful role in sharing meaning and making sense of experiences. Specifically, health narratives convey storylines, characters, and messages about health-related behaviors and provide audiences with models for healthy behaviors, prompting audiences’ health-related reflections and decision-making. Narrative engagement theory (NET) explains how personal narratives can be integrated into interventions to promote health. This study utilizes NET to test direct and indirect effects of teachers’ narrative quality on adolescent outcomes during a school-based substance use prevention intervention that includes narrative pedagogy and an implementation strategy. Observational coding of teacher narratives in video-recorded lessons along with self-report student surveys (N …

This thesis addresses the challenges posed by rapid aging in Korean society, particularly in depopulated rural areas, where the aging population ratio is significantly higher compared to urban areas. With the predicted elderly population reaching 40% by 2050, it is crucial to develop effective strategies to cope with this demographic shift.
The increasing closure and abandonment of schools in depopulated rural areas further exacerbate the challenges faced by these communities. While efforts have been made to repurpose closed schools, many of them still remain unused. This thesis proposes the reuse of abandoned schools as community centers to tackle both the …

Importance: In the 1930s, the government-sponsored Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) established maps of US neighborhoods that identified mortgage risk (grade A [green] characterizing lowest-risk neighborhoods in the US through mechanisms that transcend traditional risk factors to grade D [red] characterizing highest risk). This practice led to disinvestments and segregation in neighborhoods considered redlined. Very few studies have targeted whether there is an association between redlining and cardiovascular disease.
Objective: To evaluate whether redlining is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in US veterans.
Design, setting, and participants: In this longitudinal cohort study, US veterans were followed up (January 1, 2016, …
