Incorporating Ethnomusicology In Undergraduate Choral Music Education, Cara S Gerritsen Davis Jul 2023

Incorporating Ethnomusicology In Undergraduate Choral Music Education, Cara S Gerritsen Davis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Although American K-12 classrooms are increasingly diverse, there is a lack of exposure to divergent music curricula and performance practices in undergraduate choral music education programs that prepare preservice music educators for classroom teaching. Most current choral music education programs include a narrow view of music history, theory, and performance, focusing myopically on Western music, specifically the classical, conservatory traditions with roots in European traditions. Additionally, the lack of diversity in undergraduate choral music curricula prevents an appreciation for global music genres, prohibits opportunities for understanding diverse cultures, and blinkers music relating to performance, meaning, and society. There is limited …

Nonpharmacologic Measures To Maintain Or Increase Bone Density In Patients At Risk For Osteoporosis: An Integrative Review, Katie Saporsky Jul 2023

Nonpharmacologic Measures To Maintain Or Increase Bone Density In Patients At Risk For Osteoporosis: An Integrative Review, Katie Saporsky

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Osteoporosis is a major phenomenon, impacting a large proportion of the population of the United States. Effective prevention and mitigation strategies for this condition and its related complications are necessary to promote health and well-being for the aging population. Current pharmacologic agents used to combat osteoporosis bring the risk of adverse effects, resulting in poor patient adherence. Nonpharmacologic methodologies, specifically weight-bearing exercise, targeted nutrition, and whole-body vibration, have proven to be successful in increasing bone mineral density and mitigating the risk of osteoporosis and its related complications. Implementing these methodologies results in increasing bone mineral density, strength, and well-being.

Participants had to meet the criteria of being a heterosexual male, having been arrested for sex-demand buying, and currently participating or having completed the Sex Buyers Transformation and Restoration …

The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Leading Causes Of Death In Adults- The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study On Christian Adults, Chantel Monet Smith Jul 2023

The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Leading Causes Of Death In Adults- The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study On Christian Adults, Chantel Monet Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Prior research has examined the varying frequencies, risk factors, and impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on various populations. There is little to no empirical research, however, on the frequencies, risk factors, and impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in Christians specifically. As a result, it is uncertain if psychological practices, policies, or existing psychoeducation is applicable to Christians impacted by ACEs. Through a quantitative survey method design, this study examined the relationship between ACEs, health risk factors, disease conditions, and physical health, as studied in the original ACE study, in a sample of Christian adults. Specifically, a sample of …

Recidivism Among Rehabilitated Offenders With Mental Illness: A Quantitative Study, Robert Olando Walker Jul 2023

Recidivism Among Rehabilitated Offenders With Mental Illness: A Quantitative Study, Robert Olando Walker

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Offenders with severe mental illness (SMI) found a place within the criminal justice system (CJS) with its most crucial objectives including the reduction of recidivism among discharged offenders and their safe reintegration into a free community as rehabilitated offenders. Beyond the monetary costs of recidivism, the continued potential for criminality among offenders with mental illness (OMI) added enormous costs to all law-abiding citizens and their respective communities. However, no study was found in the literature that attempted to investigate the relationship between recidivism and the successful rehabilitation of patients with mental illness. Those found involved offenders without mental illness and …

Researchers have inspected the relationship between student engagement, achievement, and program retention in residential Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) programs, with the belief that greater engagement in these programs can improve retention and achievement scores. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to examine the relationship between student engagement and …

The Second Temple Period Jewish Diaspora; Preparing The Nations For The Coming Of Christ In Accordance With Isaiah 43, Jeffrey Albert Colburn Jul 2023

The Second Temple Period Jewish Diaspora; Preparing The Nations For The Coming Of Christ In Accordance With Isaiah 43, Jeffrey Albert Colburn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Scholars debate the purpose of Israel after the Babylonian exile. Many argue that God’s promise made to Abraham (Gen 12:1-3) was conditional on Israel’s obedience. Their disobedience caused them to be removed from the Promised Land and marked the end of the Abrahamic covenant. There is sufficient biblical evidence to demonstrate that the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles were the result of Israel’s disobedience. God warned the Israelites that the punishment for disobedience was exile (Deut 28), and He continued to warn them through the prophets. However, God used exile for a greater purpose. The thesis of this dissertation is that …

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Exploring Leadership Efficacy: Understanding The Impact Of Shame In Christian Leaders, Matthew James Williamson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the Christian leader’s experience of shame within organizations and its impact on their leadership efficacy. For this study, shame is defined as a deep sense of internal, negative pressure that typically elicits a subconscious desire to suppress or deflect. Since every organizational leadership role has a degree of accountability, emotional risk is potentially present in all negotiable interactions. This paper investigated the social/cultural encouragement of shame and potential avoidance of shame when emotional risk and failure are perceived. Brené Brown’s (2006) Shame Resilience Theory inspired this study. This theory is aligned with the purpose of …

This dissertation will discuss World War II and the declaration of martial law in Hawaii. The attack on Pearl Harbor set in motion a series of events that violated the civil rights of thousands of individuals living in Hawaii. The Supreme Court declared that the military violated the rights of citizens and that the declaration of war did not stop citizens from being protected under the Constitution. Through examining the decisions of government officials in Washington D.C., the military command in Hawaii, the archival documents, and testimonies of both government workers and civilians provided evidence that the United States government …

A Theistic Critique Of Secular Moral Nonnaturalism, Dale Eugene Kratt Jul 2023

A Theistic Critique Of Secular Moral Nonnaturalism, Dale Eugene Kratt

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation is an exercise in Theistic moral apologetics. It will be developing both a critique of secular nonnaturalist moral theory (moral Platonism) at the level of metaethics, as well as a positive form of the moral argument for the existence of God that follows from this critique. The critique will focus on the work of five prominent metaethical theorists of secular moral non-naturalism: David Enoch, Eric Wielenberg, Russ Shafer-Landau, Michael Huemer, and Christopher Kulp. Each of these thinkers will be critically examined. Following this critique, the positive moral argument for the existence of God will be developed, combining a …

Context Dependence, Cheating, And Long-Term Conflict In Social Interactions, Trey Scott Jul 2023

Context Dependence, Cheating, And Long-Term Conflict In Social Interactions, Trey Scott

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Social interactions are widespread in nature and can have important ecological and evolutionary consequences. Interactions are often categorized by who is benefited or harmed by the symbiosis. For example, if both sides benefit, the interaction is cooperative. If one side benefits at the expense of the other, it is an antagonism. The kind of interaction can have important evolutionary implications, but interactions rarely fit neatly into these interaction categories. Instead, interactions often involve elements of cooperation and conflict. My dissertation explores the consequences of interactions and how they can involve both cooperation and conflict using a range of experimental, genomic, …

Three Models Of Border Stability And Integrity, Afiq Bin Oslan Jul 2023

Three Models Of Border Stability And Integrity, Afiq Bin Oslan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Border policies have gained a surge of interest from politicians, policymakers, citizens and voters in all corners of the globe in the current millennium. In turn, academia too has turned its interest into systematically studying this increasingly salient political phenomenon. At this stage, however, this topic of study remains theoretically under-founded. The primary objective of this dissertation then is to make several theoretical contributions towards the study of border politics. To this end, my dissertation studies the causes and consequences of state decisions (or non-decisions) to secure their borders from social, political and economic perspectives. I approach this problem primarily …

Solanum is one of the world's largest and economically most important plant genera, including 1245 currently accepted species and several major and minor crops (e.g., tomato, potato, brinjal eggplant, scarlet eggplant, Gboma eggplant, lulo, and pepino). Here we provide an overview of the evolution of 25 key morphological traits for the major and minor clades of this giant genus based on stochastic mapping using a well-sampled recently published phylogeny of Solanum. The most evolutionarily labile traits (showing >100 transitions across the genus) relate to plant structure (growth form and sympodial unit structure), herbivore defence (glandular trichomes), pollination (corolla shape …

Autism, Comorbidities, And Adaptive Functioning: A Potential Moderator, Joshua J. Montrenes Jul 2023

Autism, Comorbidities, And Adaptive Functioning: A Potential Moderator, Joshua J. Montrenes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deficits in adaptive functioning and the presence of comorbid symptomatology are both commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous research has identified relationships between functional level (e.g., intellectual quotient [IQ], adaptive functioning [AF]) and comorbid symptomatology in ASD. However, further insight into the relationship between AF, comorbid psychopathology, and ASD is unclear. Specifically, how AF affects the relationship between ASD and comorbid conditions is not well understood. Whether AF moderates the relationship between autism symptom severity and comorbid symptom severity in toddlers with ASD was examined. ASD symptom severity positively correlated with comorbid symptom severity across domains and negatively …

Human Gut Bacteria Tailor Extracellular Vesicle Cargo For The Breakdown Of Diet- And Host-Derived Glycans, Mariana G Sartorio, Evan J Pardue, Nichollas E Scott, Mario F Feldman Jul 2023

Human Gut Bacteria Tailor Extracellular Vesicle Cargo For The Breakdown Of Diet- And Host-Derived Glycans, Mariana G Sartorio, Evan J Pardue, Nichollas E Scott, Mario F Feldman

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Extracellular vesicles are produced in all three domains of life, and their biogenesis has common ancient origins in eukaryotes and archaea. Although bacterial vesicles were discovered several decades ago and multiple roles have been attributed to them, no mechanism has been established for vesicles biogenesis in bacteria. For this reason, there is a significant level of skepticism about the biological relevance of bacterial vesicles.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Two machine learning derived neuroanatomical signatures were recently described. Signature 1 is associated with widespread grey matter volume reductions and signature 2 with larger basal ganglia and internal capsule volumes. We hypothesized that they represent the neurodevelopmental and treatment-responsive components of schizophrenia respectively.

STUDY DESIGN: We assessed the expression strength trajectories of these signatures and evaluated their relationships with indicators of neurodevelopmental compromise and with antipsychotic treatment effects in 83 previously minimally treated individuals with a first episode of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder who received standardized treatment and underwent comprehensive clinical, cognitive and neuroimaging assessments over 24 …

Background Studies in mice and small patient subsets implicate metabolic dysfunction in cardiac remodeling in aortic stenosis, but no large comprehensive studies of human metabolism in aortic stenosis with long-term follow-up and characterization currently exist. Methods and Results Within a multicenter prospective cohort study, we used principal components analysis to summarize 12 echocardiographic measures of left ventricular structure and function pre-transcatheter aortic valve implantation in 519 subjects (derivation). We used least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression across 221 metabolites to define metabolic signatures for each structural pattern and measured their relation to death and multimorbidity in the original cohort …

Caudal Dmn Neurons Innervate The Spleen And Release Cart Peptide To Regulate Neuroimmune Function Jul 2023

Caudal Dmn Neurons Innervate The Spleen And Release Cart Peptide To Regulate Neuroimmune Function

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a fundamental biological response to injury and infection, which if unregulated can contribute to the pathophysiology of many diseases. The vagus nerve, which primarily originates from the dorsal motor nucleus (DMN), plays an important role in rapidly dampening inflammation by regulating splenic function. However, direct vagal innervation of the spleen, which houses the majority of immune and inflammatory cells, has not been established. As an alternative to direct innervation, an anti-inflammatory reflex pathway has been proposed which involves the vagus nerve, the sympathetic celiac ganglion, and the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Although sympathetic regulation of inflammation has been shown, …

Lgr4 And Lgr5 Form Distinct Homodimers That Only Lgr4 Complexes With Rnf43/Znrf3 To Provide High Affinity Binding Of R-Spondin Ligands, Yukimatsu Toh, Ling Wu, Soohyun Park, Allison Wang, Jianghua Tu, Mingxin Zuo, Qingyun J Liu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

LGR4 and LGR5 are two homologous receptors that potentiate Wnt/β-catenin signaling in response to R-spondin (RSPO) ligands. The RSPO and LGR4 complex binds to and inhibits activities of two related E3 ubiquitin ligases, RNF43 and ZNRF3, and thus protects Wnt receptors from the E3 ligase-mediated degradation. The RSPO and LGR5 complex, however, does not interact with the E3 ligases, and the structural basis of this difference remained unknown. Here we examined the affinities of monovalent and bivalent RSPO ligands in binding to LGR4, RNF43/ZNRF3, and LGR5 in whole cells and found unique features among the receptors and E3 ligases. Monovalent …

A Bayesian Network Approach To Social And Nonsocial Cognition In Schizophrenia: Are Some Domains More Fundamental Than Others?, Samuel J Abplanalp, Junghee Lee, William P Horan, Robert S Kern, David L Penn

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVES: Social and nonsocial cognition are defined as distinct yet related constructs. However, the relative independence of individual variables-and whether specific tasks directly depend on performance in other tasks-is still unclear. The current study aimed to answer this question by using a Bayesian network approach to explore directional dependencies among social and nonsocial cognitive domains.

STUDY DESIGN: The study sample comprised 173 participants with schizophrenia (71.7% male; 28.3% female). Participants completed 5 social cognitive tasks and the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery. We estimated Bayesian networks using directed acyclic graph structures to examine directional dependencies among the variables.

STUDY RESULTS: After …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Although many studies have showed abnormal thalamocortical networks in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), the dynamic functional thalamocortical connectivity of individuals with SCZ and the effect of antipsychotics on this connectivity have not been investigated. Drug-naïve first-episode individuals with SCZ and healthy controls were recruited. Patients were treated with risperidone for 12 weeks. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was acquired at baseline and week 12. We identified six functional thalamic subdivisions. The sliding window strategy was used to determine the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of each functional thalamic subdivision. Individuals with SCZ displayed decreased or increased dFC variance in different thalamic …
