Balloon Dilatation In The Management Of Congenital Obstructive Lesions Of The Heart: Review Of Author's Experiences And Observations-Part Ii
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
While investigating the outcomes of balloon dilatation procedures in patients with congenital obstructive lesions of the heart, several parallel observations were made. The purpose of this review is to present these observations/phenomena/innovations related to balloon dilatation of pulmonary stenosis (PS), aortic stenosis (AS), and aortic coarctation (AC). In subjects who had balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (BPV), development of infundibular obstruction, electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, changes in right ventricular filling, role of balloon/annulus ratios on the results of BPV, and double balloon vs. single balloon BPV will be reviewed. In patients who had balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV), causes of aortic insufficiency and trans-umbilical …

Bronchiectasis Assessment In Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: A Non-Invasive Approach Using Forced Oscillation Technique, Jesús Meléndez-Montañez
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder that results from the dysfunction of motile cilia, which can cause chronic upper and lower respiratory infections leading to bronchiectasis. However, there is a need for additional tools to monitor the progression of bronchiectasis in PCD. The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is an effort-independent lung function test that can be used to evaluate respiratory mechanics. In this retrospective study, we aimed to describe the radiographic findings associated with respiratory impedance (resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs)) measured by FOT in six adult PCD patients and one pediatric with the (

Time-Dependent Water Wave Scattering By A Marine Structure Consisting Of An Array Of Compound Porous Cylinders, Sn Bora, S Das, Mh Meylan, S Saha, S Zheng
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Under the assumption of linear wave theory, a semi-analytical model is developed to address the time-dependent water wave scattering problem involving a marine structure consisting of several circular rigid vertical cylinders, each of which is surrounded by a thin cylindrical porous wall with a water region between the inner cylinder and the wall. The problem is tackled by applying the eigenfunction expansion approach. The energy dissipation relation is also derived for the system of compound cylinders. The principal focus of this work lies in locating the optimum geometrical configurations for which the wave forces acting on the structure are minimal …

Anti-Scg3 Gene Therapy To Treat Choroidal Neovascularization In Mice, Hong Tian, Prabuddha Waduge, Keith A Webster, Wei Li
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a leading cause of blindness in the elderly in developed countries. The disease is currently treated with anti-angiogenic biologics, including aflibercept, against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) but with limited efficacy, treatment resistance and requirement for frequent intravitreal injections. Although anti-VEGF gene therapy may provide sustained therapy that obviates multiple injections, the efficacy and side effects related to VEGF pathway targeting remain, and alternative strategies to block angiogenesis independently of VEGF are needed. We recently reported that secretogranin III (Scg3) induces only pathological angiogenesis through VEGF-independent pathways, and Scg3-neutralizing antibodies …

Onchocerciasis remains a debilitating neglected tropical disease. Due to the many challenges of current control methods, an effective vaccine against the causative agent Onchocerca volvulus is urgently needed. Mice and cynomolgus macaque non-human primates (NHPs) were immunized with a vaccine consisting of a fusion of two O. volvulus protein antigens, Ov-103 and Ov-RAL-2 (Ov-FUS-1), and three different adjuvants: Advax-CpG, alum, and AlT4. All vaccine formulations induced high antigen-specific IgG titers in both mice and NHPs. Challenging mice with O. volvulus L3 contained within subcutaneous diffusion chambers demonstrated that Ov-FUS-1/Advax-CpG-immunized animals developed protective immunity, durable for …

High Dynamic Range 3d Motion Tracking Using Circular Scans With Optical Coherence Tomography, Senyue Hao, Marcello Magri Amaral, Chao Zhou
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Motion artifacts, from such sources as heartbeats, respiration, or peristalsis, often degrade microscopic images or videos of live subjects. We have developed a method using circular optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to track the transverse and axial motion of biological samples at speeds ranging from several micrometers per second to several centimeters per second. We achieve fast and high-precision measurements of the magnitude and direction of the sample's motion by adaptively controlling the circular scan pattern settings and applying interframe and intraframe analyses. These measurements are the basis of active motion compensation via feedback control for future

Book Review: Just Schools: Building Equitable Collaborations With Families And Communities, Tara Bartlett
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
K–12 schools are facing a syndemic of critical junctures right now: On the one hand, school communities and families are still reeling from the effects of racial reckonings and the COVID-19 pandemic, while on the other hand, school leaders and decision-makers are grappling with how to effectively engage families and students amid demands and realizations for equity and justice. The book Just Schools: Building Equitable Collaborations with Families and Communities (2020) by Ann Ishimaru provides tools and pathways forward. Ishimaru first describes how our education systems have long been incubators of oppression and disengagement, steeped in colonizing methods and deficit …

John The Baptist And The Key Of Baptism, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Latter-day Saint concept of priesthood keys is not well documented in the Bible. A single passage has Jesus Christ promising to give Peter “the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19), while the book of Revelation indicates that Christ held “the keys of hell and of death” and “the key of David” (Revelation 1:18; 3:7; see Isaiah 22:22). There is no mention of keys in connection with John the Baptist.
New Review Focuses On Mormon Studies
New Review Focuses On Mormon Studies
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In his introduction to the latest FARMS Review of Books (vol. 12, no. 2), Daniel C. Peterson argues that Latter-day Saints and other Christians differ in the way they think about their faith. Rooted in Semitic traditions rather than Greek philosophy, LDS religious science is history, not theology. Accordingly, this edition of the Review features commentary on several books about the Book of Mormon and Mormon studies, most of which shed additional light on the historicity and geography of the Nephite record.
Abinadi’S Disguise And The Fate Of King Noah
Abinadi’S Disguise And The Fate Of King Noah
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
After hiding from King Noah for two years, the prophet Abinadi came before the people in disguise, identified himself by name, and then delivered a message of condemnation to the king and his people. Some might wonder why Abinadi would go to the trouble of disguising himself only to identify himself shortly afterward. Recent scholarly studies of the biblical narrative may help shed light on this curious episode.

Professionalism And Moral Injury In A Capitalist Healthcare System, James Peter Meza Md, Phd, Kassem Soufan Md, Michael Francis Do, Abbass Berjaoui Md
Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates
Professionalism cautions against profit while capitalism exists for profit. This case is a structural analysis of capitalism in a clinical setting that reveals physicians to be simultaneously wage laborers and professionals. Capitalism generates profit. Professionalism views profit as a conflict of interest that erodes trust in the doctor-patient relationship. Managing these conflicting values causes moral injury for physicians, which is a driver of physician burnout.

Application Of A Diatomic Molecule Model Potential To A Series Of Homo- And Heterodiatomic Molecules, Dorien E. Carpenter, Javier E. Hasbun
Georgia Journal of Science
We apply a one-dimensional classical model of a diatomic molecule model potential with modifications to H2, HF, LiF, N2, and CO. We obtain the unknown parameters of this model by digitizing plots of the potential curves for the molecules from a published, Hartree-Fock based theoretical electron correlation calculation (Piris 2017). We then apply the method of successive approximations to the model in order to calculate the wavenumber for each molecule in the series. The wavenumber depends on a parameter which in turn depends on the initial conditions. The value of this parameter for each individual molecule …

Can Subaltern, Multilingual And Multidialectical Bodies Feel? An Aspirational Call For Undoing The Coloniality Of Affects In English Learning And Teaching, Jihea Maddamsetti
Can Subaltern, Multilingual And Multidialectical Bodies Feel? An Aspirational Call For Undoing The Coloniality Of Affects In English Learning And Teaching, Jihea Maddamsetti
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
When Spivak (1988/2010) provocatively raised the question “Can the subaltern speak?” and concluded that they cannot, she did not mean that the subaltern literally or physically cannot speak. She meant that Western/Eurocentric/White ways of knowing and languaging produce colonial, epistemic violence that silences subaltern bodies.
In this conceptual paper, I pose a related question: “Can subaltern, multilingual and multidialectical bodies feel?” Little attention has been paid to understanding the affect of multilingual and multidialectical students during English Learning and Teaching (ELT) . As a teacher educator/researcher positioned within ELT in the white settler context of the U.S., I reach a …

Not All Doctoral Journeys Are Paved With Gold, Derek E. Fialkiewicz
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
This article is a reflection on the journey through the process of my doctoral studies. Published dissertations or research articles are very neat and tidy with no mention of any adversity or struggle. Hence why many doctoral students feel stressed, anxiety, or like quitting when obstacles or roadblocks are encountered. My doctoral program took much longer than anticipated, and my resulting dissertation veered far from my original proposal. What began as a mixed-methods study with a possible 1,400 surveys and 20 interview participants was morphed into a qualitative case study with one participant. There were many contributing factors, most uncontrollable …

Detect Misconceptions, Construct Competence-Aligned Pedagogical Practices, And Use Instructional Strategies That Decenter Speech As A Means To Include Autistic Students, Chelsea P. Tracy-Bronson, Sara Scribner
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
In this practice-based article, we use data and research to establish the need to examine inclusive-oriented pedagogical strategies to support autistic individuals. We believe that educators who use critical reflection can detect many of the common misconceptions about autism, learn how to re-frame these understandings, and consider different ways to support these students within inclusive classrooms. This article provides innovative pedagogical approaches for competence-aligned instruction, cultivating a web of communication access, bolstering social interaction, and supporting changes in the environment and with sensory experiences. We also describe ways to de-center speech to create a classroom that values dynamic engagement, divergent …
Uplifting The Cultural And Ethical Desires Of A Student Of Color: An Intercultural Phenomenological Exploration Of Marginalized Desires In Teacher Education, Younkyung Hong
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
In this study, I engage in the intercultural phenomenological analysis of discovering and naming marginalized and undervalued desires in a teacher education space. Based on Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987) conceptualization of desire, I challenge the understanding of desire as an absence or lack. I chose to focus on an Asian American female student’s story that has the power and potential to provoke awareness and prompt further examination and discussion about the complex realities of preservice teachers’ learning practices. This study highlights the value of adjusting the understanding of “what is manifested” in a phenomenological study to “what is not manifested?” …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper explores the role of quality assurance in ensuring accessible services and resources in academic libraries in Nigeria. Accessible services and resources are essential for creating learning environments that cater to the diverse needs of all users. However, Nigerian academic libraries face several challenges in achieving this goal. This paper identifies common challenges, such as limited resources, lack of awareness, and technological barriers, which hinder the provision of accessible services. It also examines the consequences of inadequate accessibility measures, including limited access to information and exclusion of certain user groups. The research will also focus on quality assurance measures …
The Role Of Using Images In Outdoor Advertising Designs To Attract Attention, Sattar Al-Juboori
The Role Of Using Images In Outdoor Advertising Designs To Attract Attention, Sattar Al-Juboori
Outdoor advertising has dominated the visual landscape of cities around the world. Outdoor advertising in city streets and public places are different than the ones located in other places for many reasons. First, it is directed towards particular audience who has no option but to look at it. The research problem lies in the excessive use of images in ways that may have been randomly put without taking into consideration certain factors such as allocation, processing, design construction or some expressive and psychological aspects. Experts have defined some technical problems related to image-choice and the extent of its future impact …
