Computer Vision Faculty Publications

This research paper provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and potential solutions related to enabling haptic communication over the Tactile Internet in the context of 6G networks. The increasing demand for multimedia services and device proliferation has resulted in limited radio resources, posing challenges in their efficient allocation for Device-to-Device (D2D)-assisted haptic communications. Achieving ultra-low latency, security, and energy efficiency are crucial requirements for enabling haptic communication over TI. The paper explores various methodologies, technologies, and frameworks that can facilitate haptic communication, including backscatter communications (BsC), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and software-defined networks. Additionally, it discusses the potential of …

The amount of antibiotics and personal care products entering local sewage systems and ultimately natural waters is increasing and raising concerns about long-term human health effects. We developed an adsorptive photocatalyst, Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles, utilizing co-precipitation and calcination with melamine, and quantified its efficacy in removing paraben and oxytetracycline (OTC). During melamine calcination, Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 recrystallized, improving material crystallinity and purity for the adsorptive–photocatalytic reaction. Kinetic experiments showed that all four parabens and OTC were removed within 120 and 45 min. We found that contaminant adsorption and reaction …

The Impact Of Road Crossings On Karst Headwater Streams In Northwest Arkansas, Anthony M. Zenga Jul 2023

The Impact Of Road Crossings On Karst Headwater Streams In Northwest Arkansas, Anthony M. Zenga

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

The karst region of NW Arkansas is home to many headwater endemic Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). This includes many species of darters, such as Etheostoma cragini, E. microperca, and E. mihileze, as well as crayfish such as Faxonious meeki brevis and F. nana. NW Arkansas is rapidly urbanizing, increasing the need to construct structures like culverts, bridges, and fords. These man-made road crossings can cause stream habitat degradation and fragmentation, as well as impair overall stream connectivity. To evaluate the impact that road crossings have on aquatic SGCN species and their habitat, 30 headwater streams were sampled throughout …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Phospholipase-associated neurodegeneration (PLAN) caused by mutations in the PLA2G6 gene is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that presents with four sub-groups. Infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) and PLA2G6-related dystonia-parkinsonism are the main two subtypes. In this cohort, we reviewed clinical, imaging, and genetic features of 25 adult and pediatric patients harboring variants in the PLA2G6.

METHODS: An extensive review of the patients' data was carried out. Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy Rating Scale (INAD-RS) was used for evaluating the severity and progression of INAD patients. Whole-exome sequencing was used to determine the disease's underlying etiology followed by co-segregation analysis using Sanger sequencing. In …

Yes-Associated Protein-1 Overexpression In Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia; A Potential Diagnostic Marker And Therapeutic Target, Peter Julius, Stepfanie N. Siyumbwa, Fred Maate, Phyllis Moonga, Guobin Kang, Trevor Kaile, John T. T., Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Yes-associated protein-1 (YAP-1) is a Hippo system transcription factor, which serves as an oncogene in squamous cell carcinoma, and several solid tumors when the Hippo pathway is dysregulated. Yet, the activity of YAP-1 in ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) has not been determined. Here, we investigate the relationship between YAP-1 overexpression and OSSN. Using a cross-sectional study design, we recruited 227 OSSN patients from the University Teaching Hospitals in Lusaka, Zambia. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess YAP-1 protein overexpression in tumor tissue relative to surrounding benign squamous epithelium. OSSN patient samples (preinvasive, n = 62, 27% and invasive, n = …

Genotype By Environment Interaction And Heteroscedasticity Influence The Expression Of Parasite Resistance In Katahdin Sheep, Brian C. Arisman, Joan M. Burke, James L. M. Morgan, Ronald M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Increasingly, sheep producers are choosing breeds that express resistance to gastrointestinal parasites due to reduced efficacy of anthelminthic drugs. One such breed is Katahdin. Katahdins are raised in various climates and management systems in the United States, which can be combined into eco-management clusters to describe production environments more holistically. The objectives of this study were to determine if genotype by environment interaction (G × E) and heteroscedasticity existed across these eco-management clusters for traits indicative of parasite resistance. Body weights (BW), FAMACHA scores (FAM), and fecal egg counts (FEC) were collected at around 90 d in 3,527 Katahdin lambs …

Antimicrobial Resistance: A Growing Serious Threat For Global Public Health, Md Abdus Salam, Md Yusuf Al-Amin, Moushumi Tabassoom Salam, Jogendra Singh Pawar, Naseem Akhter, Ali A. Rabaan, Mohammed A. A Alqumber

Neurology Articles

Antibiotics are among the most important discoveries of the 20th century, having saved millions of lives from infectious diseases. Microbes have developed acquired antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to many drugs due to high selection pressure from increasing use and misuse of antibiotics over the years. The transmission and acquisition of AMR occur primarily via a human-human interface both within and outside of healthcare facilities. A huge number of interdependent factors related to healthcare and agriculture govern the development of AMR through various drug-resistance mechanisms. The emergence and spread of AMR from the unrestricted use of antimicrobials in livestock feed has been …

California’S Failure To Protect Families: Statutory Reform To Better Serve Families Experiencing Domestic Violence, Cecilia Bobbitt Jul 2023

California’S Failure To Protect Families: Statutory Reform To Better Serve Families Experiencing Domestic Violence, Cecilia Bobbitt

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Los Angeles County is home to the largest child dependency system in the world. A significant portion of the families involved in this system have experienced domestic violence. Because the system is ineffective in responding to domestic violence, families experiencing domestic violence are especially vulnerable to the harms of the family regulation system. The harm that results is the separation of families, leading to irreparable harm and trauma which hurts, rather than helps, families.

This Article’s findings are based on qualitative legal and social science research, including deidentified data from a 2021 UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Families study regarding …

Allocating Deference In Shared Administrative Space, Juan Caballero Jul 2023

Allocating Deference In Shared Administrative Space, Juan Caballero

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

How do courts allocate deference when multiple agencies propose conflicting interpretations? While the Supreme Court has a clearly established Chevron-Mead paradigm for a single agency engaging in statutory interpretation, it has yet to articulate a method for applying deference in “shared administrative spaces,” legal jurisdictions wherein statutes task multiple agencies with implementing their provisions. The Court’s silence in this arena has allowed lower courts and scholars to develop competing and conflicting approaches to applying deference in shared administrative spaces.

This Article challenges the previously proposed rules for shared administrative spaces and proposes a new one. Courts should reframe Chevron “step …

The (Ir)Relevance Of Positivist Arguments For Originalism, Andrew Jordan Jul 2023

The (Ir)Relevance Of Positivist Arguments For Originalism, Andrew Jordan

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Some constitutional theorists have started looking to jurisprudential accounts of the nature of law for help in resolving disputes in constitutional theory. Most prominent is the “positive turn” defended by William Baude and Stephen Sachs. According to Baude and Sachs, ongoing debates in constitutional theory can be resolved by looking to positive law—that is, to the convergent social practices of legal officials. As a result, they claim that we can avoid the normative debates that have traditionally occupied constitutional theorists. Here, I argue that any attempt to settle substantive debates in constitutional theory via jurisprudential accounts of the nature of …

Too Close To Home?: The Constitutionality Of California’S S.B. 9, Stefan Ecklund

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In 2022, Senate Bill 9 went into effect in California. This law allows owners of single-family-zoned parcels to split their lots in two and build at most two units on each parcel, regardless of local land use ordinances, but subject to detailed conditions. This law is one recent attempt to encourage housing development in a state where local opposition to denser housing has been blamed for the state’s current housing affordability problem. This Note will discuss S.B. 9 and the test courts apply to determine when a state law infringes too much on a charter city’s control over “municipal affairs” …
