Bluebird Bait: Quantifying The Attraction Of Ectoparasites To Nestling Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis), Ella Grace Bollinger Apr 2026

Bluebird Bait: Quantifying The Attraction Of Ectoparasites To Nestling Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis), Ella Grace Bollinger

ATU Scholars Symposium

Ectoparasites, such as mosquitoes (Culicidae), blackflies (Simuliidae), and biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), have been shown to reduce population viability by lowering post-fledging survival and decreasing the lifetime reproductive success of adult birds. This issue is particularly concerning for songbirds such as the Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) because their nestlings are relatively naked and have limited mobility, making them highly vulnerable to attacks by biting flies. However, the specific mechanisms attracting ectoparasites to nests remain understudied. We hypothesized that biting fly and mosquito abundance would be significantly higher at active Eastern Bluebird nests than that of empty boxes and would increase with …

Additions To Clarinet Chamber Ensemble Music: A Focus On The Younger Groups, Martha Elvira Smith Gomez Apr 2026

Additions To Clarinet Chamber Ensemble Music: A Focus On The Younger Groups, Martha Elvira Smith Gomez

ATU Scholars Symposium

Chamber ensembles are a valuable tool in music education. However, these ensembles are often overlooked or omitted from the school band program. These ensembles promote individual growth in multiple ways, boosting confidence, independence, reliability, and musicianship. While there already exists extensive repertoire covering the many different types of chamber ensembles, appropriate and diverse music geared towards younger clarinet trios can be very difficult to find.

In my presentation, I will be highlighting the importance of chamber music and guiding the audience through my process for creating the collection of the seven arrangements that compromise my creative portfolio. This collection provides …

Assessing The Effect Of A Human-Made Reservoir On The Mussel Community In Caney Creek, Trakker Estes Apr 2026

Assessing The Effect Of A Human-Made Reservoir On The Mussel Community In Caney Creek, Trakker Estes

ATU Scholars Symposium

Freshwater mussels are one of the most threatened taxonomic groups globally, with less than 32% of North American taxa considered secure. In Arkansas, over half of the state’s 85 species are endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Small impoundments may contribute to these declines through reduced hydrological connectivity and the resulting decline of fish community movement. This study examines the effects of Tri-County Lake, a small impoundment of Caney Creek in southern Arkansas, on mussel abundance and diversity. In total, eight sites were surveyed upstream, within, and downstream of the impoundment across various habitat types. A timed-search approach utilizing scuba …

Digitizing Transportation Operations At Safe Haven, Luke S. Garrett, William B. Turk, Clay A. Curtis, Aiden H. Behler Apr 2026

Digitizing Transportation Operations At Safe Haven, Luke S. Garrett, William B. Turk, Clay A. Curtis, Aiden H. Behler

ATU Scholars Symposium

Safe Haven’s transportation department currently relies on a paper-based documentation process that requires physical transfer of records between buildings and repeated manual uploading of documents into storage systems. This workflow creates delays, redundant administrative tasks, and increased risk of misplaced or inconsistent records. Drivers, transportation coordinators, reviewers, and clients all interact with this process, making efficiency and data accuracy critical to daily operations.

This project develops a web-based transportation scheduling system designed to digitize documentation workflows and automate many of the repetitive tasks. The system replaces physical records with digital data management, reducing unnecessary manual handling and improving information accessibility …

Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion For Electron Transfer In The Biological Complexes, Muhammad Waqas Haseeb Apr 2026

Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion For Electron Transfer In The Biological Complexes, Muhammad Waqas Haseeb

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

The emerging field of quantum biology explores whether non-trivial quantum effects such as entanglement, tunnelling, and environmentally induced memory can contribute meaningfully to biological function alongside classical mechanisms. While such effects have been explored in photosynthesis, enzyme catalysis, and olfaction, their potential relevance to virology remains largely unexplored. Viruses, which straddle the boundary between living and non-living matter, provide a particularly compelling testbed for this inquiry. This thesis investigates a quantum-dynamical paradigm for viral entry, proposing that the earliest stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection may involve vibrationally assisted electron transfer (VA-ET) between the viral Spike protein and the host cell's angiotensin-converting …

Before The War: The Impact Of Minority Stress On Palestinian Muslim Women In The United States, Rimah Jaber Apr 2026

Before The War: The Impact Of Minority Stress On Palestinian Muslim Women In The United States, Rimah Jaber

Education Student Dissertations

This study explored the lived experiences of first- and second-generation Palestinian Muslim women (PMW) living in the US. Participants were 11 women between the ages of 20 and 33 from various regions across the country. The methodology included a phenomenological approach within a constructivist–interpretivist paradigm to conduct one-on-one, semistructured interviews. Participants shared their stories during online interviews, which were recorded and transcribed before data analysis. Guided by the embodied intersectionality framework and minority stress theory, the analysis yielded two superordinate themes with two subthemes each: (a) perceived discrimination (subthemes: stressors of living in the diaspora and erasure and disclosure of …
