Many individuals receiving cancer directed therapy are at risk of developing hyperglycemia and new, or worsening of, diabetes due to location of their cancer, treatment regimen, and/or prolonged use of steroids. Meeting the goals of US K–12 science education reform requires that preservice elementary teachers (PSTs) understand engineering as a specialized discipline and a human endeavor that addresses real-world issues. Yet in their formal education, few PSTs receive opportunities to learn about the humanistic dimensions of engineering: engineers’ personal values and motivations, the sociocultural nature of engineering work, and the societal significance of engineering. No-fee or “diamond” open access embodies the principles of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, particularly openness, inclusivity, and collaboration. This model of publishing strengthens equitable access to knowledge, promotes multilingualism, and democratizes science.

Unique among open access models, no-fee open access eliminates both APCs and subscription fees, making it completely free for both authors and readers. This model is often funded by academic institutions, governments, or non-profit organizations, focusing on equity, inclusivity, and accessibility.

Chemotherapy remains the primary treatment strategy for cancers; however, its clinical efficacy is often limited by severe toxic effects resulting in normal cells. The study investigated the protective potential of the flavonoids epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) and quercetin, used in combination, against chemotherapy-induced toxicity in human fibroblast F-180 cells. Cells were exposed to three commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, doxorubicin, cisplatin, and etoposide, in the presence or absence of EGCG and quercetin at concentrations of 25 and 50 μM. cells viability was assessed using the MTT assay, while oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity were evaluated by intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and total …

Recently, several funder-driven Open Access mandates, such as Plan S in Europe or the NIH Public Access Policy in the US, have indicated a desire to shift away from allocating funds for article processing charges (APCs) and have instead called for significantly reducing or eliminating embargo periods on accepted manuscripts (AMs) to make them a viable pathway to compliance for researchers.

New Directions In Gear Up Stem Camps: How Activity Design Shapes Socio-Emotional And Stem Outcomes, Lilly Rogers

This mixed-methods study examined the impact of GEAR UP week-long middle-school STEM summer camp on students’ socio-emotional learning (SEL) and STEM engagement. Using pre- and post-intervention surveys (N = 45), an exploratory factor analysis identified two underlying competency dimensions: Socio-Emotional Skills and STEM Engagement & Spatial Skills. A repeated-measures MANOVA revealed a significant overall time effect; however, growth occurred only in Socio-Emotional Skills, which increased with a large effect size, F(1,44) = 29.28, p < .001, partial η² = .400, while STEM Engagement showed no significant change, F(1,44) = 0.89, p = .350

Remote environments lacking cellular or satellite coverage present significant safety challenges. ProxyConnec was developed as a point-to-point communication system using ESP32 microcontrollers and REYAX RYLR998 LoRa modules to provide off-grid monitoring.

The system implements a proactive heartbeat model in which a beacon device transmits a signal every 1,000 milliseconds. A base station monitors this connection using a 5,000 millisecond watchdog timer. If communication is interrupted, the system immediately triggers audible and visual alerts. Unlike conventional tracking devices that depend on manual SOS activation, this design treats unexpected signal loss as a potential safety event.

In this study, we seek to explore patterns of microhabitat use among darters, including variables of stream depth, water velocity, substrate composition, aquatic vegetation, and woody debris cover. The most informative microhabitat variables will be assessed using nonmetric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS). Species with more than five individuals collected were included in analysis, totaling eight species across 24 sites in the Lower Little River Watershed of southwest Arkansas. Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga cerulea) have declined across their breeding range, including the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, where historically occupied sites have experienced reduced populations or abandonment. Understanding population trends and habitat structure is important for informing forest management and conservation. This study compares historic and current Cerulean Warbler counts at selected upland sites within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest and evaluates whether differences in canopy composition between abandoned historic sites and foraging sites currently used by Cerulean Warblers can explain site abandonment. Arkansas, is one state where there have been very few snail-specific surveys, especially in the South Central Plains Ecoregion. This project investigates the distribution and diversity of freshwater aquatic snails in three previously unsampled creeks in Arkansas (Champagnolle Creek, L’Aigle Creek, Moro Creek, Chemin-A-Haut Bayou, and Derrieusseaux Creek). Traditional therapies, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation often have limitations, such as relapse and resistance, highlighting the need for more precise therapeutic options. CAR-T therapy addresses many of these challenges through engineering a patient’s own T-cells to recognize and destroy cancerous cells with specificity and long-lasting immune activity. The goal of our work is to automate the tedious and delicate process of optical alignment (rotating mirrors, shifting lenses by millimeters, and iterating endlessly) in the context of generating vortex beams from a Gaussian laser beam. We create vortex beams by illuminating a digital hologram displayed on a spatial light modulator (SLM). Two main issues arise: misalignment and phase imperfections in the input beam. If the beam does not pass directly through the center of the SLM, or if it deviates from an ideal Gaussian profile, the resulting vortex beam becomes distorted.

Potassium is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, yet excessive potassium fertilization can induce salt stress with detrimental consequences for crop productivity and nutritional quality. Despite its agricultural relevance, potassium chloride induced stress remains significantly understudied compared to classical sodium-based salinity. Burnout among critical care nurses (CCNs) is a substantial threat to nurse well-being, patient safety, and workforce stability. The aim of this paper is to identify risk factors contributing to burnout in CCNs using evidence-based articles. An organized literature search was conducted using CINAHL with key terms including critical care nurses, burnout, risk factors, compassion fatigue, and work environment. Five recent peer-reviewed studies meeting inclusion criteria were chosen. The results validate that risk for burnout is vastly influenced by emotional exhaustion, chronic workplace stress, high patient acuity, sleep disturbances, compassion fatigue, insufficient support, and organizational strain. Cosmological models are a tool used to understand the mysterious nature of dark energy and dark matter by predicting how these dark sector components have shaped the expansion of the universe. The cosmic coincidence problem stems from the present day densities of dark energy and matter sharing very similar magnitudes when previously we expect a much larger difference in orders of magnitude. Manual balancing is slow, inconsistent, and often only done during certain “seasons,” which leaves long periods of imbalance. This paper reviews existing automatic methods such as the Fast-Switching Relay method, the Practical Balancing Algorithm, and the Phase-EQ system and highlights their benefits and limitations. Background: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) models are gaining popularity in biomedical research; however, the high infrastructure cost, at approximately $20,000 per unit, is a significant hurdle for primary undergraduate institutions (PUIs) establishing zebrafish facilities. This study assesses if repurposing existing tilapia open-design aquaculture systems could be a cost-effective method for zebrafish facility establishment.

The examination of disaster preparedness among university students is vital to identify their readiness and challenges related to preparedness. Although numerous studies have examined disaster preparedness, most employ quantitative approaches that focus solely on assessing students’ preparedness levels. This study uses a qualitative approach to gain deeper insights into university students’ experiences and understanding of disaster preparedness.
