● Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomogrophy (SPECT) scans are a type of medical scan ● A patient is injected with a radiotracer, which emits gamma rays that are detected by gamma cameras that rotate around the patient ● Using a series of images collectively referred to as a sinogram, a 3D reconstruction of the patient is created using techniques such as Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (MLEM) ●MLEM takes a long time, but using a neural network can speed up the reconstruction process and allow for a lower dosage of radiotracer to be used

As large language models become more widely used, there is a growing need for reliable and consistent methods to evaluate their performance. Existing benchmarks often lack transparency, consistency across runs, or the ability to handle varied answer formats. BrainBench was developed to address these gaps by providing an automated, reproducible evaluation framework that enables fair comparison of models and deeper insight into their strengths and limitations.

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
RAB12 is a small GTPase and a validated substrate of LRRK2, a kinase genetically linked to Parkinson's disease (PD). While RAB12-LRRK2 signaling has been implicated in ciliogenesis and immune regulation, the neuronal function of RAB12 remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the role of RAB12 in synaptic physiology using Rab12 knockout (KO) mice. Rab12 KO mice developed normally but exhibited increased locomotor activity in adulthood. Electrophysiological recordings from striatal slices revealed enhanced presynaptic release probability and increased excitatory drive onto medium spiny neurons. Consistently, live-cell imaging of cultured cortical neurons revealed that Rab12 deletion facilitated, while Rab12 overexpression inhibited, synaptic …

Examination Of Celebrity And Influencer Endorsements, Mackenzie Molnar
Honors Projects
This study examines the effects of celebrity and influencer endorsements on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions. A digital survey was distributed through Prolific to 210 U.S. participants ages 18–24. Participants viewed fictional advertisements featuring either a celebrity or an influencer endorsing a product and then rated each endorsement on familiarity, relatability, authenticity, believability, and likelihood of purchase. Results showed that endorsement type alone did not significantly affect believability, indicating that celebrities and influencers can be similarly effective in marketing. However, gender, media usage, and relatability significantly influenced consumer responses. Female participants responded more positively to influencer endorsements, while higher relatability …

This research paper explores the cultural significance and the roles of folktales in francophone countries in Africa and the Caribbean. By analyzing recurring themes and character types in folktales, this study argues the importance of storytelling and traditional folklore in the shaping of a culture. Through close reading of a selection of folktales from a variety of francophone countries in Africa and the Caribbean, the research highlights themes of wisdom, greed, and explanations of the natural world, among others. Additionally, this paper touches on the historical importance of storytelling in cultures around the world. The research draws on information from …
“…You Lost Your Way On That River As You Would In A Desert…”: Spec Ops: The Line As A Post-Imperialist Adaptation And Response To Heart Of Darkness, Logan Grime
Honors Projects
As an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the military shooter video game Spec Ops: The Line grapples with adapting the themes and the narrative of an imperialist work into a modern post-imperialist context. By swapping England in Africa for America in the Middle East, the game criticizes America’s conduct of war in the Middle East by showing its similarities to the novella’s imperialism. Furthermore, Spec Ops: The Line focuses on America’s imperialism by adapting Heart of Darkness to an interactive format. “The horror” of violent imperialist action is placed upon the player as Spec Ops: The Line …
Pepper Spray Exposure And The Effect On Dna Profiling Of Blood, Brandon Schmakel
Pepper Spray Exposure And The Effect On Dna Profiling Of Blood, Brandon Schmakel
Honors Projects
Pepper spray is a common self defense tool used in both law enforcement and civilian settings, with the goal of incapacitating the sprayed individual. In real casework where pepper spray was used, a red-brown stain which tested positive presumptively for blood provided no DNA profile after further testing six months later. A previous graduate student, Emma Crawn, attempted to emulate these casework conditions and instead achieved a DNA profile with slight indications of inhibition or degradation. Further analysis of active pepper spray ingredients such as Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) and Chloroacetophenone (CN) reveals that there are observed reactions, such as oxidation, …

Study On Influence Of Udl Hyd Raulic Parameters On Anti-Seepage Performance Of Slope Treate D With Cover Layer, Xiao Jie, Yan Dongq Ing, Chen Guanyi, Hu Linjie, Chang Jin
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To explore the influe nce of hydraulic parameters of the drainage layer (UDL) on the anti-seepage performance of the capillary barrier cover (CBC) layer, the VG model was adopted to fit the soil-water characteristic curve and permeability function of soil based on the principle of unsaturated seepage in this paper. A simplified model of “fine-UDL-coarse ”-type CBC layer containing a UDL was established using Geo Studio finite element software. By carrying out the numerical simulation of seepage of expansive soil slope treated with the cover layer under heavy rain conditions, the influence rules of different hydraulic parameters of the UDL …

Numerical Simulation Of Retraction Effect Of Corroded Prestressed Steel Strands Based On Cohesive Contact, Xu Dejun, Li Jun, Yi Jiafei, Zhang Xiangzhen, Zhao Biao, Lin Yitian, Dai Lizhao
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Concrete cracking and bond degradation caused by corrosion lead to retraction slip of prestressed steel strands and changes in transfer length. Simulating the retraction effect of corroded prestressed steel strands is a difficulty in current research. A numerical model for corroded prestressed concrete (PC) components based on Cohesive contact was established. The effects of different corrosion locations and corrosion rates on the retraction slip and transfer length of prestressed steel strands were analyzed. The rationality of the model was verified based on existing experimental data. Results indicate that Cohesive contact can effectively simulate the retraction effect of prestressed steel strands …

Artist Statement Matthew Lopez
This collection of videos and posters was created with active duty members and veterans primarily in mind. The gallery installation invites viewers to sit, interact, and exist in the space. The setup encourages lingering, allowing laughter, silence, and reflection to coexist within the environment.
The first video parodies the earnest style of 1940s military training films. In it, I invented a fictional VA program called Operation S.U.R.G.E., using deadpan humor to highlight how absurd and disorienting college (and civilian life in general) can feel after leaving the military. The transition is ridiculous, and I wanted that …
