Laborers And Laundrymen: Sinophobia And The Formation Of American Masculinities, Adam Comstock Apr 2024

Laborers And Laundrymen: Sinophobia And The Formation Of American Masculinities, Adam Comstock

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This paper analyzes pre-existing scholarship and primary sources to connect 19th–20th century anti-Chinese sentiment to the notions of masculinity in the Americas. It takes a trans-national approach, examining Chinese labor migrations to both Anglo- and Latin-America and the effect they had on notions of gender. The paper argues that frontiersmen in the Americas, many of whom engaged in non-normative gender and sexuality practices, used anti-Chinese xenophobia to reinforce traditional masculinity. Connecting phenomena of race, gender, and sexuality, it takes an intersectional approach to history.

By equipping our community members with features like location partnering with near-by dog-friendly spaces, geolocation technology, differentiated profile metrics, and in-app safety measures, we bring owners together so they can build …

Wonder At Overcoming Anxiety: Feelings Of Self, Negative Emotions And Encounters With The Ugly In Wonder Experiences, Kate O'Neil Apr 2024

Wonder At Overcoming Anxiety: Feelings Of Self, Negative Emotions And Encounters With The Ugly In Wonder Experiences, Kate O'Neil

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Fuller (2012) defines wonder experiences from a positive perspective, with an added emphasis to the beauty of life, the unexpectedness of life, and the inexplicable nature of life itself. He distinguishes wonder from awe when he states: “wonder differs from awe, however, in that it isn’t accompanied by fear or submission. Wonder diminishes the sense of self, yet does so without inducing interpersonal submissiveness” (p. 70). However, my experiences addressing anxiety experiences suggested to me how movement away from negative experiences can allow one to see the good from those ‘bad’ experiences, which in turn emits wonder. In order to …

Punk And Perestroika: Voicing Resistance At The End Of The Ussr, Nathan Klaits Apr 2024

Punk And Perestroika: Voicing Resistance At The End Of The Ussr, Nathan Klaits

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This paper focuses on Siberian punk band, Grazhdanskaya Oborona (GrOb). Founded in 1984, the band broke up in 1990 due to growing mainstream appeal and the end of totalitarian Soviet discourse. The liberal atmosphere of the Soviet Union during perestroika undercut GrOb’s ability to voice criticism. Commercialization as well as a broadening audience also diluted the band’s message and eventually caused it to break up. Referring to fanzines, interviews, and scholarly research, the paper presents the struggle of GrOb, as well as the Siberian punk scene more broadly, to voice criticism as rock commercialized and the authoritarian discourse of the …

The Silent, Spoken Stress: How A Lack Of Dialogue Perpetuates Vocal Issues And Lowered Quality Of Life In Educators, Peighton Cervoni

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This presentation examines the heavy burden of vocal issues and stress amongst educators in the Southern Tier of New York. Teachers are deemed one of the most at-risk groups of people for contracting vocal disorders according to the International Labor Organization (Araújo et al. 2008). Female teachers are disproportionately affected by vocal issues as caused by both biological and sociocultural factors. This disproportion then translates into their teaching, which then in turn affects their students’ learning and their job satisfaction. By incorporating evidence from articles, personal correspondence, and formal interviews with educators of various concentrations, this study demonstrates that teachers …

Webrtc Animation Transport Proposal, Paul Kerr Apr 2024

Webrtc Animation Transport Proposal, Paul Kerr

Defensive Publications Series

Video chat in a virtual environment can include avatars that are animated to track the facial expressions of a speaker. While most chat interfaces have the capability of transporting video streams captured at a client device, most do not support transporting animation data related to animating a user’s avatar in the virtual chat. In these scenarios, conventional chat technologies may transport the entire video to enable a client device to extract data for animation, e.g., facial coordinates. This is wasteful of network bandwidth and client device battery life, and unsuitable for client devices with low computational capacity. Techniques are described …

Advancements In Sequence Generation Through Gan-Enhanced Reinforcement Learning Apr 2024

Advancements In Sequence Generation Through Gan-Enhanced Reinforcement Learning

Defensive Publications Series

This paper expands on the framework of SeqGAN to explore enhancements within sequence generation using reinforcement learning and GANs. SeqGAN, designed for generating discrete token sequences predominantly used in natural language processing, operates by modeling the data generator as a stochastic policy. By utilizing reinforcement learning techniques, it avoids the differentiation problems typically faced by generators, directly performing gradient policy updates. Notably, the reward signal originates from a GAN discriminator based on a complete sequence assessment, integrating feedback through Monte Carlo search to intermediate state-action steps. We explore further enhancements with WGAN, utilizing Earth Mover’s distance to potentially refine guidance …

Enhancing Sequence Modeling: Leveraging Gans With Reinforcement Learning Apr 2024

Enhancing Sequence Modeling: Leveraging Gans With Reinforcement Learning

Defensive Publications Series

This paper builds upon the SeqGAN framework, aiming to explore and implement strategic enhancements. SeqGAN facilitates the generation of discrete token sequences, a common requirement in NLP applications, by employing a stochastic policy in reinforcement learning (RL). This approach effectively circumvents the differentiation challenges typically faced by generators by directly applying gradient policy updates. The RL reward mechanism is driven by a GAN discriminator that evaluates complete sequences, facilitating backward integration of feedback to earlier state-action pairs through Monte Carlo search. Key improvements considered include the adoption of WGAN, which employs Earth Mover's distance instead of KL divergence, offering potentially …

Efficiency Improvements In Mdp Solutions Using Enhanced Subspace Methods

Defensive Publications Series

In the realm of finite Markov Decision Processes (MDPs), we explore a sophisticated approach utilizing enhanced subspace methods to solve the Bellman equation efficiently. Recent advancements have shifted the focus from traditional matrix splitting techniques, as delineated in Puterman’s seminal work, to the application of the Enhanced Subspace Method (ESM). This method, notable for its dynamism and non-stationarity, has been proven to vastly outperform conventional iterative solutions, achieving significant efficiency gains during policy evaluations. This paper delves into the motivations, underlying principles, and the practical utility of ESM in the context of reinforcement learning, comparing its effectiveness against other established …

Optimized Iterative Methods For Markov Decision Processes: A Subspace Approach

Defensive Publications Series

Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) are fundamental in computational decision-making frameworks, requiring efficient computational methods for their resolution. Traditionally, methods such as matrix splitting have been used to decompose the Bellman equations for iterative solutions. However, the Krylov Subspace Method (KSM) presents a more efficient alternative, leveraging dynamic iterative techniques that significantly outperform static ones. This paper introduces the Enhanced Iterative Subspace Method (EISM), detailing its conceptual motivations, practical implementations, and superiority through various computational experiments.

Unequal Contributions To Co2 Emissions Along The Income Distribution Within And Between Countries, Federica Cappelli Apr 2024

Unequal Contributions To Co2 Emissions Along The Income Distribution Within And Between Countries, Federica Cappelli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The question of whether changes in income inequality affect CO2 emissions remains a topic of debate at both theoretical and empirical levels. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of changes in the full spectre of income distribution on consumption based CO2 emissions per capita. To do so, we estimate a dynamic difference-GMM model and a dynamic threshold regression model allowing for endogeneity on a panel database covering 107 countries between 1990 and 2019. Our analysis highlights how different income classes contribute very differently to consumption-based CO2 emissions. In addition, by accounting for between-country inequalities in the …

Protecting The Blind Side Of Title Vii From The Blitz Of Textualism, Sean Harrison Apr 2024

Protecting The Blind Side Of Title Vii From The Blitz Of Textualism, Sean Harrison

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

Just like the outcome of Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the National Football League, the existence of private affirmative action is uncertain. A case could be brought, or it might not. Even if a case is brought, the Supreme Court may not even take it up. But that does not mean we should stand idly by. By analyzing the past and by tracing judicial trends in statutory interpretation, we can see a potential blitz coming. Instead of hoping the blitz never comes, we need to proactively adjust the protection in order to not be blindsided by a potential challenge to Weber …

Evaluating Bone Fracture Healing Utilizing Novel Ultrasound Modes, X-Ray And Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry In A Rabbit Model, Priscilla Machado, Rachel Blackman, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg, Traci Fox Apr 2024

Evaluating Bone Fracture Healing Utilizing Novel Ultrasound Modes, X-Ray And Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry In A Rabbit Model, Priscilla Machado, Rachel Blackman, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg, Traci Fox

Department of Radiology Posters

Background and Purpose

Healing in bone fractures is a complex process involving local inflammation, angiogenesis (i.e., the creation of new blood vessels), and formation of a bone-building callus, all of which leads to returning the bone nearly to its pre-fracture state. This is the process in a bone where the fracture is clean and the fractured ends oppose each other. Five to 10 percent of fractures are described as non-union, which can lead to poor healing and long-term complications. The purpose of this study was to compare fracture healing in a rabbit model using x-ray, the traditional method for evaluating …
