English-medium instruction (EMI) as a global phenomenon continues to rapidly grow in non-native English-speaking countries (Dang et al. 2021). In Asia, evidence of this growth can be inferred by the sheer number of EMI-centered journal articles and edited volumes (Barnard and Hasim 2018; Fenton-Smith et al. 2017). I focus this study on affiliated colleges in India, where EMI interests reflect the aforementioned. Organizationally, the Indian higher education system is based on University of London’s federal university (Singh, 2003) where universities provide central functions like curricular and exam development and degree conferral. Tobacco cigarette smoking is associated with disrupted brain network dynamics in resting brain networks including the Salience (SN) and Fronto parietal (FPN). Unified multimodal methods [Resting state connectivity analysis, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and cortical thickness analysis] were employed to test the hypothesis that the impact of cigarette smoking on the balance among these networks is due to alterations in white matter connectivity, microstructural architecture, functional connectivity and cortical thickness (CT) and that these metrics define fundamental differences between people who smoke and nonsmokers. Through a close analysis of Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive and a comparative analysis of the intertexts it references, this dissertation argues that literary scholars and literacy pedagogues can learn from sound studies and archival practices together to achieve more socially just reading, writing, and teaching. The novel narrates a family traveling across the United States, not only experiencing their own journey but also learning about past forced migrations upon the same land and present attempted migrations into the country. This autobiographical study of teaching and learning Algebra 1 was developed to examine classroom experiences through the lens of the researcher and to explore the perceptions of teachers and students involved in the study. The goal was to identify the quality, meaningful educational experiences in the classroom which led to the development of algebraic thinking and self-efficacy among students who previously demonstrated a struggle to learn mathematics. Complex humanitarian emergencies are a main driver of food and nutritional insecurity. Agricultural interventions are key to improving nutrition and food security, and their positive impacts are well-documented in stable developing countries. However, it is unclear if their positive effects on food security hold in complex emergency settings, too. In this paper, we systematically review empirical articles that apply rigorous designs to assess the causal impacts of agricultural interventions on food security, nutrition, or health outcomes in complex humanitarian emergencies. We only find six articles matching these criteria, which have mixed results on dietary diversity and food security, and little …

Orbital dynamics play a crucial role in determining the habitability of exoplanets, and many models have been developed to study the dynamical evolution of broader planetary system structure. To further investigate the implications this has regarding planetary habitability, this project simulated the evolution of the Solar System with an additional planet orbiting in place of the Asteroid Belt using the Gravitational Rigid-body InTegrator (GRIT) package. 21 total simulations were run for 100,000 years with varying values for the extra planet’s mass (from 0.01 to 10 Earth masses) and orbital parameters (based on the 4 most massive asteroids in the Asteroid …

Cultural barriers and worldview differences between American evangelicalism and the LGBTQ+ movement have historically hindered evangelism to same-sex attracted men. Although recent Christian theologians have offered wisdom for including same-sex attracted believers in the church and for combating prevailing secular worldviews, evangelistic strategies to reach gay unbelievers remain underdeveloped. This thesis identifies five desires common within the population of same-sex attracted men (beauty, friendship, romance, sexuality, and masculinity) and proposes a method of evangelism which targets these desires using theological aesthetics to communicate the beauty of the gospel creatively and compellingly. A routine scenario when developing PC applications is storing data in small files or records and then retrieving and manipulating that data with a distinctive identifier (ID). In these scenarios, the developer can save the records using the ID as the filename or use an embedded on-disk key-value database. However, many file systems can have performance issues when handling many small files. As a result, developers would rather avoid depending on an embedded database if it offers little benefit or has a detrimental effect on performance for their use case. As part of a larger study to better understand the tectonic history of western Idaho, we have studied the reliability of laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to characterize the major cation composition of feldspar. Feldspar is a common rock forming mineral composed of three phases with differing major cation proportions, internal textures, and isotopic composition, all reflective of its formation conditions. The major cation proportions need to be quantified in order to contextualize more advanced classifications. Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus; hereafter CSTG) were once widespread in shrub-steppe ecosystems in western North America, but have been in decline due to habitat loss from anthropogenic impact (i.e. climate change, invasive species, human development). CSTG are estimated to occupy only 5-10% of their former range, and are the rarest of the Sharp-tailed Grouse subspecies. While management efforts are in place to conserve this subspecies (i.e. translocations), knowledge gaps may be impeding success. Genetic and genomic tools can uncover important background including understanding remaining diversity, estimating population structure, connectivity, demographic histories, and multi-species interactions. The nose is a primary system for respiration, acting as airway filtration and thermal regulation. Obstructed breathing during sleep creates a challenge for nasal respiration during the night, affecting nearly 24% of the population between ages 30 to 60 years old. Neonates and infants have underdeveloped nasal cavities which cause higher nasal resistance resulting in less airflow. EtCO2 levels were measured from six participants in four explicit nose deformations, defined as right ala closed, left ala closed, the tip of the nose pushed upwards, and the tip of the nose pressed downwards. Supporting healthy pregnancy outcomes requires a comprehensive understanding of the molecular and cellular programs of peri-implantation development, when most pregnancy failure occurs. Here, we present single-cell transcriptomes of bovine peri-implantation embryo development at day 12, 14, 16, and 18 post-fertilization. We defined the cellular composition and gene expression of embryonic disc, hypoblast, and trophoblast lineages in bovine peri-implantation embryos, and identified markers and pathway signaling that represent distinct stages of bovine peri-implantation lineages; the expression of selected markers was validated in peri-implantation embryos. Using detailed time-course transcriptomic analyses, we revealed a previously unrecognized primitive trophoblast cell lineage. We also characterized …

We study existence and uniqueness of Green functions for the Cheeger QLaplacian in metric measure spaces that are Ahlfors Q-regular and support a Q-Poincar´e inequality with Q > 1. We prove uniqueness of Green functions both in the case of relatively compact domains, and in the global (unbounded) case. We also prove existence of global Green functions in unbounded spaces, complementing the existing results in relatively compact domains proved recently in [BBL20].

Drug/DUI courts have existed in the state of South Dakota since 2007 when the state became the last to implement a drug/DUI court program. Currently, South Dakota has 17 problem-solving courts which include drug, DUI, mental health, and veterans courts. The drug/DUI court model works to circumvent participants out of the criminal justice system by targeting the root cause of their criminal behavior. The role of the judge in this model is essential. According to research, many students exhibit problematic behavior within the classroom. These problematic behaviors can disrupt the academic school day. Teachers are reporting more instances of anger, anxiety, lack of impulse control, and oppositional defiance in their students (Aksoy, 2020). The rates of suspension and expulsion for children under five are alarmingly high. To help struggling students, teachers need better support and resources. Providing these resources can help students develop appropriate social skills and succeed academically.
