As climate change intensifies, harsh environmental conditions, such as increased drought and salt levels, will cause significant challenges to agricultural productivity globally. Plants are naturally sensitive to stress but have evolved mechanisms that play a crucial role in regulating plant responses to environmental stress. However, the adaptations occurring may not be quick enough to ensure the long-term survivability or production of our agricultural system. This study examined trauma-informed practices of mental health professionals from eight different countries. The literature indicates that many practitioners feel unprepared and unequipped to therapeutically work with individuals who have experienced trauma-related psychological disorders (SAMHSA, 2014). This poster highlights themes derived from interviews with nine different mental health practitioners from around the globe, offers recommendations to emphasize graduate and post-graduate trauma-informed training, and also offers suggestions for future trauma competencies. The researchers utilized Hermeneutic Phenomenology methodology to analyze the themes from the nine interviews. Flavonoids are a class of chemicals that are found in plants, meaning they are commonly consumed within people’s diets. Flavonoids also act as inhibitors within the body. Inhibitors slow down or stop chemical reactions from taking place. In this case, the flavonoids react with the enzyme catalase to inhibit its activity. Catalase in the body is typically associated with the presence of an infection or inflammation. This leads to increased levels of hydrogen peroxide in the body, which reacts with the catalase. This study examines the flavonoids present in cherries and spinach to determine their effect on catalase activity. Flavonoids …

Many of these populist leaders have been using their power to erode democratic institutions and public trust. While the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have long distinguished themselves from the other post-communist countries of Eastern Europe, they are no exception to the populist trend. Under what conditions are populist political parties in the Baltic states successful? The literature shows hemispheric asymmetry in individuals corresponding with temperamental style. Those with greater right-frontal activation tend towards withdrawal/inhibition and those with greater left-frontal activation tend towards approach/activation (e.g., Davidson, 1992). Other literature suggests that greater right-parietotemporal activation is associated with increased arousal (Heller, 1993; Wolfe & Bell, 2014). Temperamental style has been linked with cognitive performance with approach-oriented temperaments being associated with both higher and lower performance depending on the task requirements (Khan et al., 2024; Wolfe & Bell, 2007). Literature further suggests that postural position (e.g., sitting, standing, lying down) may influence feelings of approach/withdrawal and cognitive processing. …

Due to U.S. border policies limiting safe and lawful passage, cartels have developed an industry in the U.S.-Mexico border that supplies crossing services to migrants, utilizing coercive means to regulate the market and profiting from migrant’s desperation to enter the country. This study combines economic and ethnographic research to describe the human smuggling industry and the impact it has in the migrant journey. Scarcity, inelastic demand, black markets, and monopolies are economic concepts used to understand the operations of these services. Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in the US. While much progress has been made, there is still a significant need for novel therapies. Chalcones are privileged, natural products that have shown cytotoxic activity and potential as chemotherapeutics in multiple cancerous cell lines. Additionally, bismuth complexes of small organic molecules have been shown to have anti-tumor activity. The anti-proliferative activity of phenylbismuthbis(4-carboxychalcone), a bismuth-coordinated chalcone was assessed in multiple cancer cell lines using MTS assays. Bismuth, a relatively inexpensive heavy metal with low toxicity, has the potential to be used in medicines and anticancer drugs. This project is exploring bismuth complexes with ligands based on chalcones, which are a type of small organic molecules with known anticancer properties. Preliminary results on a bismuth-chalcone complex indicate that substituted aryl bismuth complexes have better anticancer activity than triphenylbismuth or the chalcone ligand on its own. A series of trisubstituted bismuth molecules were synthesized using a BiCl₃ Grignard reaction under a nitrogen atmosphere with different substituents to provide electron donating groups, electron withdrawing groups or bulk. Divisions in the American Catholic Church have resulted in widespread dissent from Catholic moral teaching. In response to this dissent, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has used the language of communion to bar dissenting Catholics from the Eucharist, which is to push them to the margins of the Church. In contrast, Pope Francis has used the language of communion to welcome dissenting Catholics to the table through the Synod on Synodality. This thesis explores the theological implications of these different approaches to communion. It argues that the people of the Church must embrace an understanding of communion …

A circle is mathematically defined as the collection of points a given distance away from a set point. Thus, the appearance of a circle varies dramatically across different metrics—for example, the taxicab metric (as popularized by Krause and Reynolds) has a circle that is a Euclidean square. As such, metrics can be partially defined by the appearance of their unit circles. This paper focuses on creating and analyzing an infinite set of metrics defined by their circles being regular polygons. Additionally, it provides a method of exactly generating a regular n-gon given a center, included point, and specified orientation.

High school sports are the most popular extracurricular activity in the United States. Coaches serve as gatekeepers to team culture and influence student athletes’ experiences in those sports. Team cultures influence performance and well-being outcomes. Those outcomes are not inherently beneficial and have caused harm to some student-athletes. Guided by a constructivist approach paired with grounded theory analysis, this study investigates how high school coaches in New England perceive the role of team culture in promoting student-athlete well-being and performance.
