Attorney-client privilege was held by the Supreme Court to extend beyond death in 1996, albeit only ratifying centuries of accepted practice in the lower courts and England before them. But with the lawyer’s client dead, the natural outcome of such a rule is that privilege—the legal enforcement of secrecy—will persist forever, for only the dead client could ever have waived and thus end it. Perpetuity is not traditionally favored by the law for good reason, and yet a long and broad line of precedent endorses its application to privilege. The internet needs secure forms of identity authentication to function properly, but identity authentication is not a core part of the internet’s architecture. Instead, approaches to identity verification vary, often using centralized stores of identity information that are targets of cyber attacks. Decentralized identity is a secure way to manage identity online that puts users’ identities in their own hands and that has the potential to become a core part of cybersecurity. Based on a significant amount of prior research, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been identified to be the most effective method of teaching sexual health education (SHAPE America, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023). Comprehensive sexual health education improves healthy behaviors and outcomes, provides useful information, and is positively perceived by students (Gardner, 2015; Kirby, 2002; Robinson et al., 2022). Over time, research on immigrant populations has revealed a trend known as the immigrant paradox in which, the further generations get from the generation of immigration, the poorer their outcomes are in areas such as mental health, delinquency, substance abuse, and education. Though a definitive explanation for this trend has yet to be identified, prevailing theories include several social, familial, and community-based factors such as the impacts of bilingualism, parental expectations, biculturalism, co-ethnic peers, quality of schools, and community support. The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) contains a section titled “Requirement to Maintain Essential Minimum Coverage.” Colloquially known as the Individual Mandate, this section of the Act initially established a monetary penalty for anyone who did not maintain health insurance in a given tax year. But with the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the monetary penalty was reset to zero, inducing opponents of the ACA to mount a legal challenge over the Individual Mandate’s constitutionality. Gardner-Webb commuter students now have a new dedicated space on campus to relax between classes, study, have access to lockers, or warm up a packed lunch. The Commuter Commons opened Thursday, April 18, on the Third Floor of Tucker Student Center next to the Student Success Main Suite. Refreshments were available and Dr. Josh Parrott, Vice President of Christian Life and Service, prayed over the space and offered a blessing for the students who will use the Commons, as well as for the staff involved across campus who support commuters.

This doctoral capstone project was completed in partnership with MOVE Inclusive Dance, an inclusive dance studio that empowers individuals of all ability levels to learn life skills through dance. The aim of this project was to provide parents and caregivers resources that would introduce them to different businesses and groups around the greater Nashville area. As a result, a parent and caregiver resource document was created to benefit families from early diagnosis in childhood to adulthood and included financial aid opportunities, respite care, support groups, legal planning, and many others. Researchers have been studying juveniles who experience both child maltreatment and delinquency for decades. These studies document the prevalence, outcomes, and demographics of youth who navigate child welfare and juvenile justice systems, also known as dual system youth. However, there is a lack of investigation into the complex processes occurring at the intersection of these two systems. This dissertation aims to fill that gap by building on previous research, organizational theory, and the growing area of punishment literature in criminal justice. Catchment Water Storage Mediates River Flow Sensitivity To Climate Change, Brian Charles Brown

As patterns of precipitation and evapotranspiration change, human water security and aquatic ecosystem health depend on understanding how catchment characteristics interact with climate to control river flow. We tested factors that mediate sensitivity of river flow to fluctuations in climate using a set of 1,148 data-rich, climate diverse catchments in various parts of the world from 2001-2020. We extrapolated these results to an additional 2,012 catchments with sparser data. Using features such as vegetation, land use, hydrology, and local climate, we found that catchments with high aridity to runoff ratios (Fuh's parameter) had 380% higher runoff sensitivity to fluctuations in …

This project aims to create a map of soil depth in the Magic Valley area. Soil depth is a crucial variable in estimating soil carbon storage. Surveying the entire valley in person would be expensive and inefficient. This study aims to generate a usable data product using preexisting and publicly available data without the need for a field survey. The Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) hosts well drilling logs for every groundwater well in Idaho. The drilling logs contain lithologic data including soil depth. We have begun research to estimate soil depth by downloading and extracting soil depth point …

There has been a massive tax competition among international society for the last couple of decades. Between 1985 and 2018, the global average statutory corporate tax rate fell from 49% to 24%. Some countries competed as tax havens and presented extremely low tax rates to foreign corporations which resulted in multinational enterprises (“MNEs”) shifting “close to 40%” of profits to tax havens. This raised concerns that such a trend is a “race to the bottom” where tax havens will have minimal tax revenue due to such low tax rates whereby MNEs pay less and less tax. This capstone project addressed the research question: “What are the systemic, societal, and personal barriers and facilitators to occupational participation and engagement that formerly incarcerated women experience in Texas?” The project aimed to advocate for formerly incarcerated women living in Texas by interviewing and collaborating with them to create an advocacy booklet highlighting their lived experiences. Following USAHS IRB approval, recruitment, and screening, 20 participants engaged in a semi-structured interview via Zoom. Insights on their experience post-incarceration in Texas regarding housing, employment, family, healthcare, and change were explored.
