The purpose of this project is to quantify the relationship between the US political environment and the American economy. First, impacts of U.S. presidential elections on the American economy are analyzed. The project will analyze the time effects of elections on multiple economic indicators. Average returns on the following investments will be observed: Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, gold, and silver. Additionally, the price of crude oil and the consumer price index will be studied. Time dummy variables will then be incorporated to show whether an election took place within the given time period, splitting the data into two …
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Honors College Theses
Power is embedded in teacher and student actions within mathematics classrooms, whether that power is known or not. Incorporating equity and inclusiveness requires a deeper understanding of this power behind actions. In this study, we developed and administered a three part survey questioning college faculty and college students how they perceive power related to common actions within a college mathematics classroom. For example, participants were asked whether a college math teacher assigning homework increased, decreased, or did both to the teacher’s power; then whether this action increased, decreased, or did both to a student’s power. Analysis of 16 faculty and …

Art-Based Occupational Therapy For Adolescents With Mental Health Conditions, Sarah Helm
MOT Student Capstones
Pediatric and adolescent mental health disorders have a significant impact on occupational performance. This may include difficulty in social situations, decreased ability to engage in selfcare tasks, difficulty problem solving, or difficulty during mealtime. Occupational therapy practitioners can address occupational performance in this population through art-based activities to improve emotional and sensory regulation. Research shows that visual art activities can improve emotional expression, sensory regulation, abstract thinking, communication, and self-esteem. Art-based activities can include textile crafts, painting, drawing, making things with clay, or coloring. A presentation and activity booklet were created to share the impact of art-based occupational therapy on …

The Portrayal Of Stereotypes Of Latin American Men In American Television And Film, Karina Nava
Gender Studies Student Scholarship
In this project I seek to examine the ways in which Latin American men are stereotyped in American television and film in the form of controlling images and the impacts that these controlling images may bring. The purpose of this project is to show how television and film can not only contribute to the creation of stereotypes but enforce them as well. It also seeks to bring attention to the ways in which these stereotypes can affect societal and self-perception of Latinos, and the consequences that come with these perceptions. This will be done through a cross-disciplinary analysis using Gender …

“Caught In The Continuum”: How Special Educators Facilitate Access For Students With Extensive Support Needs, Megan Doty
“Caught In The Continuum”: How Special Educators Facilitate Access For Students With Extensive Support Needs, Megan Doty
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Despite the preponderance of scholarly literature advocating the benefits of including students with disabilities in general education, students with ESN continue to be educated in restrictive settings. Limited research exists on how to facilitate access to inclusive opportunities in these segregated self-contained settings, yet this is primarily where these students are educated. Additionally, educators of these students are often “caught in the continuum;” teaching in a system that is set to exclude their students while attempting to facilitate access. This qualitative research study used collective case study methodology and methods to analyze this gap in the literature. This dissertation aimed …

University of Dayton Doctor of Physical Therapy Annual Research Symposium
Purpose/Hypothesis: Balance/Auditory/Vision exercises (Bal-A-Vis-X) consists of a series of exercises using sand-filled bags and racquet balls. Most of the exercises are completed while standing on a rocker board and heavily rooted in rhythm. The rhythmic patterns are utilized to facilitate focused concentration, crossing midline, motor planning, right/left awareness, eye-hand coordination, balance, bilateral coordination, body and spatial awareness. Only a few published studies have explored Bal-A-Vis-X as an intervention in therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of Bal-A-Vis-X to improve upper limb coordination in children with motor delays.
Number of Subjects: Fifteen children with motor delays …
First Amendment Defenses To Alien Transportation Crimes, Charquia Wright
First Amendment Defenses To Alien Transportation Crimes, Charquia Wright
Scholarly Publications
Florida law now prohibits the transportation of undocumented aliens into the state. Briefings characterize these laws as unconstitutionally preempting federal immigration law and federal due process rights. Despite this emphasis on due process, field, and conflict preemption unconstitutionality, few have addressed the First Amendment implications of human smuggling prosecutions of natural and some corporate persons. The Supreme Court's Free Exercise precedent protects the religious freedoms of natural persons and some corporations. Under state alien transportation laws, these freedoms cease to exist. Because the Supreme Court has extended these religious protections to some corporations, they too are entitled to First Amendment …

Motivational Interviewing For Problem And Pathological Gambling: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, David Forman
Motivational Interviewing For Problem And Pathological Gambling: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, David Forman
Psychology ETDs
As legalized gambling becomes more accessible and the prevalence of gambling problems are expected to rise, there is growing interest in effective psychological interventions that reduce gambling problems. A previous meta-analysis (Yakovenko, 2015) concluded that Motivational Interviewing (MI) was associated with significant reductions in gambling frequency and intensity. Yet, that analysis only included five studies and had methodological limitations. Notably, the majority of studies included in the meta-analysis combined MI with another intervention, blurring the effect of MI’s specific contributions on outcomes. To improve upon this work, the current study performed an updated systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis that 1) …
Investigating The Presence Of Patented In Vitro Models For Cancer-Nerve Crosstalk Methods, Christoff Hauptmann
Investigating The Presence Of Patented In Vitro Models For Cancer-Nerve Crosstalk Methods, Christoff Hauptmann
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this research project is to investigate the presence of patented in vitro models for perineural invasion (PNI) and tumor innervation, the two most prominent modes of cancer-nerve crosstalk that play an active role in cancer initiation and progression. PNI occurs through a positive feedback loop in which cancer cells invade passive nerves to metastasize. Tumor innervation is the process where tumor cells attract nearby nerves to the tumor microenvironment (TME) for tumor growth and metastasis. These crosstalk paths have been established for many types of cancer and result in poor patient prognosis. Recently, in vitro models have …

Gene therapies are emerging as powerful tools for treating genetic diseases and cancers, offering the potential for a permanent cure. Hemophilia B, affecting approximately 6,000 men in the U.S., results from a deficiency in coagulation factor IX protein (FIX), which is crucial for blood clotting. A substantial portion of patients, over 40%, suffer from severe hemophilia B, experiencing spontaneous, prolonged bleeding. Current prophylactic treatments involve frequent coagulation factor infusions, yet a curative approach would alleviate this burden. Gene editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas systems show promise for correcting genetic mutations, but the diverse nature of factor IX gene (F9) …
Navigating Challenges For Locally Produced Food, Paul Cook
Navigating Challenges For Locally Produced Food, Paul Cook
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
There is much interest in locally produced food and the benefits it can have on communities across the state of Kansas. By interviewing city managers, we have identified some of the unique factors and challenges that city officials face when considering their community’s local food systems. Through interview and survey data, we sensed that there is a desire for more local food in communities but lack of resources, lack of policies and the nature of large commodity agriculture in Kansas appear as challenges. Ad-hoc groups coming from schools, churches, and committees at the county level make up the majority of …

Threat Modeling Based On A Design Basis Threat For Nuclear Security, Abu Zafor Mohammad Salahuddin, Altab Hossain, Mohammad Shawkat Akbar
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Identification of the design basis threat (DBT) of a nuclear facility is an important factor of overall safety, for which the operator is mainly responsible per the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency. As threat levels increase especially threats beyond the DBT-the responsibility of the state also increases. In recent years, only a few studies on nuclear security and DBTs have comprehensively detailed the full spectrum of nuclear facilities in a nation. Thus, this paper presents the correlation between an actual threat and the DBT. The objectives of the study are to assist in establishing physical protection system (PPS) …
