Food Insecurity Among Women: The Data Gap And The Path Forward, Beth Dedman May 2024

Food Insecurity Among Women: The Data Gap And The Path Forward, Beth Dedman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quantification frames the world in terms of hierarchies, reputation, and status, thereby making important indicators comparable, and subsequently stripping them of their context, history, and meaning. Numerical knowledge is essential, yet if it is not closely connected to more qualitative forms of knowledge, it leads to oversimplification, homogenization, and the neglect of the surrounding social structure. Feminist-based research is completely antithetical to this form of research, focusing on qualitative experiences, the effects of relationships of power, and adding the necessary context to the quantifiable information. As of yet, most research in the Northwest Arkansas region as it pertains to the …

Overpowered, Benjamin Pearey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Overpowered is a temporary installation of a tiled living room, modeled after my own living room in a rental apartment in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It takes its name from a kind of sci-fi electro-disco love song released in 2007 by Roísín Murphy, who breaks down romantic attraction into preprogrammed meanings, chemical needs and matching data - and her sense of losing control, succumbing to the overwhelming forces at play. My installation is borne from a similar feeling. It is a continuation of a navigation of daily life under the pressures of external forces exerted by the various systems that underpin society …

The Role Of Adverse Childhood Events On The Progression Of Chronic Kidney Disease In Children: A Ckid Study, Ana Cortez, Bradley A. Warady, Darcy K. Weidemann, John Cowden, Matthew Matheson May 2024

The Role Of Adverse Childhood Events On The Progression Of Chronic Kidney Disease In Children: A Ckid Study, Ana Cortez, Bradley A. Warady, Darcy K. Weidemann, John Cowden, Matthew Matheson

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2024

Background

There is a paucity of research on the relationship between adverse childhood events (ACEs) and chronic kidney disease. The effect of ACEs on the long-term health outcomes of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic lung disease first emerged in a paper published in 1998. The National Institutes of Health sponsored the ACE Study, which Kaiser Permanente carried out in California. The study used a 17-question survey addressing seven exposures: psychological, physical, contact-sexual abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, mother being treated violently, and criminal behavior in the household. The results revealed a strong relationship between childhood exposure to ACEs and health …

An Examination Of Superintendent Turnover In Kentucky: A Decade Of Data, Kevin Hub, Gill Hunter May 2024

An Examination Of Superintendent Turnover In Kentucky: A Decade Of Data, Kevin Hub, Gill Hunter

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

This study makes use of a data set detailing instances of public school superintendent turnover in Kentucky between 2014 and 2023. A quantitative research design was used to analyze descriptive statistics in the sample of 205 superintendent turnovers occurring during the identified decade. The analysis reveals a disparity between females and males selected to fill superintendent vacancies. The research also demonstrates that superintendent turnover in Appalachian and non-Appalachian school districts is proportionally consistent, as is superintendent turnover among the eight geographically-assigned Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) educational cooperatives. The findings demonstrate that applicants for superintendent positions serving as assistant superintendents …

Wobble And Transcending The Challenges Of Novice Teachers, Thomas Jansky, Trevor Thomas Stewart May 2024

Wobble And Transcending The Challenges Of Novice Teachers, Thomas Jansky, Trevor Thomas Stewart

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

This paper explores a novice teacher's experiences and challenges in order to discuss the importance of supporting new teachers. We examine the new identity that novice teachers take on as they enter the workforce, requiring them to bring two competing worlds into dialogue with one another. By highlighting the moments of struggle and uncertainty that one new teacher encountered, the paper calls attention to the need to support new teachers and help them transcend the persistent problem of isolation in the teaching profession. This article identifies how teacher educators can help prepare teacher candidates and novice teachers to respond to …

Establishing A Boundaryless Institute Of Higher Education Through Transcendence, Sanci Teague, Melissa S. Vermillion May 2024

Establishing A Boundaryless Institute Of Higher Education Through Transcendence, Sanci Teague, Melissa S. Vermillion

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

In a modern era defined by technological advancements and rapidly changing markets, reforming traditional organizational structures is necessary to meet changing business and educational demands. One novel approach is to create a Boundaryless Institution of Higher Education. Jack Welch, CEO/Chairperson of General Electric and “management thinker,” pioneered the boundaryless organization in the 1990s. Being boundaryless means being flexible and dynamic with an emphasis on removing boundaries, both physical and conceptual. Educational leaders pursue boundaryless organizations in search of more inclusive, adaptable, and interconnected educational experiences for students. Successful boundaryless institutions of higher education shift from traditionally rigid educational structures to …
