The Effects Of Free Volume And Processing On The Development Of Gas Separation Membranes, Jacob Schekman May 2024

The Effects Of Free Volume And Processing On The Development Of Gas Separation Membranes, Jacob Schekman

Dissertations

Structure, thermal, mechanical, gas transport, and free volume properties of thiol-ene based systems are investigated and discussed. In the pursuit of generating low energy-cost polymer membranes for gas separation, it became apparent that UV-curing of thiol-ene materials presented several routes toward achieving this goal. Network structure plays a vital role in determining the gas transport properties of membrane materials. UV photopolymerization techniques provide a means to rapidly vitrify network morphologies which can be tuned depending on choice of monomer. Thiol-ene monomers offer a broad range of precursor materials from which to choose for the design of functional membrane materials.

Understanding The Tick Cellular Immunity To Pathogen Infection, Abdulsalam Adegoke May 2024

Understanding The Tick Cellular Immunity To Pathogen Infection, Abdulsalam Adegoke

Dissertations

The tick immune response consist of two main components: the cellular and humoral components. The cellular component consists of hemocytes that circulate in the hemolymph-filled body cavity. Tick hemocytes are functional analogs of the mammalian white blood cells and are involved in immune responses including phagocytosis. The Humoral component includes mainly soluble peptides that function as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and pattern recognition receptors. Although tick hemocytes partakes in the humoral responses, different tick tissues produce several humoral factors such as AMPs and lectins. We have a deep understanding of the different humoral effectors released across the tick tissues during tick-pathogen …

Einstein's Dream By Cindy Mctee: An Analysis And Transcription For Wind Ensemble, Kyle Aufderhar

Dissertations

Cindy McTee’s 2005 composition for strings, percussion, and computer music is an exploration in pluralism, combining newly composed music and computer-synthesized sounds with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Charles Ives. McTee’s initial use of Bach’s music comprises the complete harmonization of the chorale “Wir glauben all’ an einen Gott.” In later sections of the work, McTee creates entire textures from the chorale’s soprano line, subjecting it to a variety of treatments including augmentation, diminution, inversion, retrograde, and retrograde inversion. In addition to the inclusion of his music, McTee reiterates the importance of Bach through composition that relies on …

“It’S Literally Impossible To Be A Woman:” Female Depictions In The Films Of Greta Gerwig, Genevieve Graessle May 2024

“It’S Literally Impossible To Be A Woman:” Female Depictions In The Films Of Greta Gerwig, Genevieve Graessle

Honors College

With Lady Bird (2017), Little Women (2019), and Barbie (2023), Greta Gerwig made history as the first director to have her first three directorial feature films nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. This trilogy of movies is extremely relevant since Barbie was the highest-grossing film of the 2023 box office. However, little scholarly analysis of Gerwig’s filmography exists. This project examines the particular depictions of female characters in these three films. In Gerwig’s corpus, women are not solely limited to the roles of innocent daughter, obedient wife, holy mother, or damaged prostitute; they can be presidents and painters, authors …

Fairness And Bias Of Machine Learning In Search And Ranking, Yuan Wang

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Recent advancements in Information Retrieval (IR) and machine learning have significantly improved ranking and search system performance. However, these data-driven approaches often suffer from inherent biases present in training datasets, leading to unfair treatment of certain demographic groups and contributing to systematic discrimination based on race, gender, or geographic location. This research aims to address the fairness and bias issue in ranking and search systems by proposing innovative frameworks that mitigate data bias and ensure equitable representation and exposure across diverse groups.

We introduce two novel frameworks: the Meta-learning based Fair Ranking (MFR) model and the Meta Curriculum-based Fair Ranking …

A Survey Of Pet Caretakers On The Use And Perceptions Regarding Heartworm Prophylaxis For Prevention Of Canine Heartworm Disease, Stacie Williams, Charles T. Faulkner

Faculty Other Scholarly Content

Canine heartworm disease (CHWD) is caused by infection with the nematode parasite Dirofilaria immitis transmitted through the bite of a mosquito carrying the infective stage larva. The disease is insidious in its onset and almost 100% preventable with the use of highly effective pharmaceutical compounds that target the migrating larval stage acquired from the mosquito. However, use of canine heartworm prophylaxis among pet dog caretakers is not universally accepted and sometimes viewed with skepticism. Previous research conducted in the Cumberland Gap Region (CGR) indicated that 41.8% of dog owning individuals do not use prophylactic products. In this study, we surveyed …

Gaeilge In Éirinn: Irish Language Ideologies And Attitudes In A Divided Island Nation, Skyler D. Newhall May 2024

Gaeilge In Éirinn: Irish Language Ideologies And Attitudes In A Divided Island Nation, Skyler D. Newhall

Linguistics Honors Projects

Sociolinguistic research on Irish has predominantly examined language dynamics within either the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland, neglecting the connected experiences of language communities across both territories. Drawing on media and interview data, this paper investigates the significance of a shared 'language=identity' ideology. The results reveal that despite most Irish identifying individuals operating within this framework, diverse controversies regarding attitudes towards language legitimacy, speaker agency, and perceived 'usefulness' affect native and new speaker language use and motivation. These findings underscore the need for language reclamation and revitalization projects to address language ideologies and attitudes.

Whither The Wagner Act: On The Waning View Of Labor Law And Leviathan, Brandon R. Magner May 2024

Whither The Wagner Act: On The Waning View Of Labor Law And Leviathan, Brandon R. Magner

Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal

The National Labor Relations Act’s (NLRA) well-documented weaknesses in substance and enforcement, combined with legislators’ inability to adapt the Act to the modern economy, have understandably created many cynics in the field of labor law. For several decades, legal scholars have almost unanimously derided the NLRA and the agency which administers it, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), for failing to prevent rampant anti-union conduct by employers and the collapse of the union formation process through the Board’s election machinery. This “ossification” of the law, as it has come to be known, is considered to be a key contributor to …

Gymnosperms Demonstrate Patterns Of Fine-Root Trait Coordination Consistent With The Global Root Economics Space, Jessica R. Langguth, Marcin Zadworny, Karl Andraczek, Marvin Lo, Newton Tran, Kelsey Patrick, Joanna Mucha, Luke Mccormack, Kevin E. Mueller

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Gymnosperms encompass a diverse group of mostly woody plants with high ecological and economic value, yet little is known about the scope and organization of fine-root trait diversity among gymnosperms due to the undersampling of most gymnosperm families and the dominance of angiosperm groups in recent syntheses. New and existing data were compiled for morphological traits (root diameter, length, tissue density, specific root length [SRL] and specific root area [SRA]), the architectural trait branching ratio, root nitrogen content [N] and mycorrhizal colonization. We used phylogenetic least squares regression and principal component analysis to determine trait-trait relationships and coordination across 66 …

Seventy-Five Years Of Global Health Lawmaking Under The World Health Organization: Evolving Foundations Of Global Health Law Through Global Health Governance, Benjamin Mason Meier, Alexandra Finch

O'Neill Institute Papers

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been shaped by global health law throughout its history. Drawing from the post-war establishment of global governance under the United Nations (UN), the modern foundations of global health law were laid by the WHO Constitution, which provided WHO with a range of normative authorities to realize its mandate as the UN’s directing and coordinating authority in global health. Yet WHO has faced political challenges in exercising these normative authorities to advance global health law, revealing the limitations of law as a foundation of global health governance. This article chronicles the 75-year evolution of global …

The 1983 experimental film Koyaanisqatsi remains a visionary artistic work 40 years after it was initially released, because it continues to resonate in contemporary society by vividly depicting the intersection of human life and technology, prompting viewers to contemplate "life out of balance" and its implications. The film makes us question where life is headed and the ways in which we "live technology" today.

Match Stability With A Costly And Flexible Number Of Positions, James Gilmore May 2024

Match Stability With A Costly And Flexible Number Of Positions, James Gilmore

Behavioral and Computational Economics (MS) Theses

One of the objectives of two-sided matching mechanisms is to pair two groups of agents such that there is no incentive for pair deviation. The outcome of a match can significantly impact participants. While much of the existing research in this field addresses the matching with fixed quotas, this is not always applicable. We introduce the concept of slot stability, recognizing the potential motivation for organizations to modify their quotas after the match. We propose an algorithm designed to create stable and slot stable matches by employing flexible, endogenous quotas to address this issue.
