Specifying And Estimating Vector Autoregressions Using Their Eigensystem Representation, Leo Krippner May 2024

Specifying And Estimating Vector Autoregressions Using Their Eigensystem Representation, Leo Krippner

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This article introduces the principles and mechanics of the eigensystem vector autoregression (EVAR) framework, where a VAR may be specified and estimated directly via its eigenvalue and eigenvector parameters. Using explicit constraints on the eigensystem permits control of a VAR ís allowable dynamics, which is illustrated empirically with standard and time-varying VAR estimations specified to be always non-explosive.

The DASS-21 questionnaire was distributed to each of the women’s basketball athletes. This 21-question survey produced scores that determined whether they are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and/or stress. …

Advancing Sentiment Analysis Through Emotionally-Agnostic Text Mining In Large Language Models (Llms), Jay Ratican, James Hutson May 2024

Advancing Sentiment Analysis Through Emotionally-Agnostic Text Mining In Large Language Models (Llms), Jay Ratican, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The conventional methodology for sentiment analysis within large language models (LLMs) has predominantly drawn upon human emotional frameworks, incorporating physiological cues that are inherently absent in text-only communication. This research proposes a paradigm shift towards an emotionallyagnostic approach to sentiment analysis in LLMs, which concentrates on purely textual expressions of sentiment, circumventing the confounding effects of human physiological responses. The aim is to refine sentiment analysis algorithms to discern and generate emotionally congruent responses strictly from text-based cues. This study presents a comprehensive framework for an emotionally-agnostic sentiment analysis model that systematically excludes physiological indicators whilst maintaining the analytical depth …

Pre-Plinian Perplexity: Identifying And Constraining An Anomalous Pdc During The Initial Stages Of The May 18, 1980 Mt. St. Helens Eruption, Justin Crevier

Geosciences Undergraduate Theses

The Mount St. Helens (MSH) 18 May 1980 eruption was a formative event for a generation of volcanologists. With so much data available from detailed studies of the Blast and Plinian phases, MSH could aptly be called one of volcanology's greatest teachers—and the volcano may yet have more to teach us. The transition period, which occurred between the end of the Blast phase (0830) and the beginning of the Plinian phase (0920) on the morning of May 18, 1980, has not yet benefited from the same degree of comprehensive review as either of those phases. The conditions which caused the …

Llms Can’T Be Trusted For Financial Advice, Gary N. Smith

Pomona Economics

ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) do not understand the text they input and output. When three prominent LLMs were tested with 11 financial-decision prompts, the LLM responses were seemingly authoritative but riddled with arithmetic and critical-thinking mistakes. Financial planners are unlikely to be replaced by LLMs anytime soon.

Using Early Childhood Literacy Interventions To Support Healthy Development In At-Risk Students, Patrick Gustafson

Graduate Teacher Education

This Capstone research study investigated ways early childhood literacy interventions can support healthy development in at-risk students. Children entered kindergarten at a wide range of literacy skill levels, and skill gaps could persist for years. Students who failed to read proficiently by third grade are less likely to finish high school. Research showed the potential for targeted early literacy interventions to positively impact outcomes for at-risk students. Interventions implemented by families, teachers, and trained volunteers all made a positive impact on academic achievement. Fidelity played an important role in effective intervention implementation, though challenges exist in real-world early childhood classrooms. …

Creative Jurisprudence: The Paradox Of Free Speech Absolutism, R. George Wright, Chris Rowley May 2024

Creative Jurisprudence: The Paradox Of Free Speech Absolutism, R. George Wright, Chris Rowley

University of Colorado Law Review Forum

Governments often seek to restrict speech on the basis of its content, navigating the ever-complex terrain between constitutional freedoms and regulatory interests. While the United States judiciary has historically endeavored to balance competing constitutional questions and government interests when scrutinizing content-based speech regulations, recent trends signify a troubling shift. The judiciary has recently embraced what this Article refers to as free speech absolutism, whereby it sidesteps the longstanding, intricate process of balancing constitutional values and public interests, in favor of an unequivocal endorsement of speech rights. This simplified judicial strategy proceeds first with an acknowledgment of the paramount importance of …

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

The Second Council’s reforms directed at full and active participation in the liturgy are not limited to the reform of the Church’s celebrations and rites. What is also required is a further engagement of the Church in the world in order to address the problematic social realities that impede the realization of what the liturgy promises and represents. One particular social reality in need of such analysis and engagement is domestic abuse, and this paper seeks to address that issue within the context of India. To gain a better understanding of the problem, first, a survey of the roots and …

The Influence Of Music Tempo On Bench Press Power Production In College-Aged Males, Samuel Linderbaum, Reese Pantila May 2024

The Influence Of Music Tempo On Bench Press Power Production In College-Aged Males, Samuel Linderbaum, Reese Pantila

Applied Health Sciences Student Works

Previous research suggests that music with a tempo exceeding resting heart rate may stimulate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), releasing catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine). These hormones have physiological effects such as increased heart rate and muscle strength in cardiovascular exercise. This study aims to see if the effect of music in cardiovascular exercise is also present in strength training. This will be done by examining whether pre- and intra-exercise music listening at different tempos affects power output during bench press repetitions in young adult males. It is hypothesized that music at a higher tempo will stimulate the SNS and result …

Navigating Identity Through Education In Literature And In The Classroom, Sofia Sakzlyan

English (MA) Theses

This thesis explores the intricate relationship between education, identity formation, and oppression, drawing from psychosocial and sociocultural perspectives. I delve into how education serves as a critical arena where individuals encounter various internal psychological conflicts and external social influences that shape their sense of self. By analyzing the perspectives of writers such as Paulo Freire, bell hooks, Kate Chopin Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Erin Gruwell, the thesis seeks to answer how education impacts the self and how it intersects with systems of oppression. Furthermore, I explore the role of education in fostering critical consciousness and empowerment, particularly in the face …

Death Of Young Women In Media: The Origins Of Obsession And A Sentiment Analysis On The Broader Contemporary Cultural Impact, Katelyn Muia

Honors Projects in Data Science

Media has affected popular culture for hundreds of years in Western literature: from non-fiction stories to news coverage, to online publications. The tone, as well as source material chosen, not only indicates what society views as important, but also influences a culture’s shared beliefs. This paper explores the origins of women as objects in narrative structures, and then analyzes the more modern impacts of this trope. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the reasons behind why young women are disproportionately the victims in violent crimes in all forms of media coverage. The survey data collected will be used …

Gentile Foods: Rabbinic Prohibitions And The Fear Of Intermarriage, David Raab May 2024

Gentile Foods: Rabbinic Prohibitions And The Fear Of Intermarriage, David Raab

Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a history of halakhah which looks to evidence from both within and outside of rabbinic literature to explain the provenance of a particular phenomenon. It suggests, contra traditional and academic understanding, that the original rationale behind the rabbinic prohibitions of eating Gentile bread and certain Gentile cooking was concern over the possible admixture of biblically impermissible ingredients, including idolatrous wine. It was only in Babylonia, possibly around the end of the amoraic period, that the rabbis added mišum ḥatnut, the fear of intermarriage, as the rationale for the prohibition of eating Gentile bread (but not cooking), thus …

Development And Simulation Of A Damage Assessment And Recovery Method For Critical Database Systems, Anthony Pham

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

With how much the world relies on technology and the critical database infrastructure that supports it, the infrastructures require efficient methods to detect and resolve suspicious database transactions, whether malicious or not. This paper focuses on an algorithm that detects and resolves malicious transactions in a database. The process begins with identifying suspicious transactions based on common patterns. When a transaction is flagged, the algorithm segments groups of suspicious transactions in separate log files, separating them for easy access. Within these segments, any dependent transactions that use data affected by the suspicious transactions will be stored there. After the transaction …

Manufacturing Silicone In-House For The Creation Of Customized Neurovascular Blood Vessel Mimics, Jacob Wilbert Perisho

Master's Theses

The Tissue Engineering Lab at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo focuses on creating tissue-engineered Blood Vessel Mimics (BVMs) designed for the preclinical testing of neurovascular devices. These BVMs are composed of silicone models, representing anatomically accurate neurovasculatures, that are sodded with vascular cell types and then cultivated in bioreactors (which maintain physiologic conditions). These silicone models are currently sourced externally from industry partners, so the primary goal of this thesis was to develop the means and methods for the Tissue Engineering Lab to manufacture silicone models in-house.

The first aim of this thesis was to develop and explore …

Background: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) presents significant challenges, with cognitive and motor deficits often persisting long after the initial injury. Current assessment methods may fail to detect subtle impairments, highlighting the need for more comprehensive evaluation techniques. This pilot study aims to investigate the efficacy of cognitive dual-task assessments in detecting subtle gait deficits associated with concussion/mild Traumatic Brain Injury (c/mTBI), with a focus on identifying which cognitive dual task would provide the most cognitive cost and afford motion capture sensors the ability to detect subtle gait changes.

Methods: Twenty-two participants without prior concussion or mTBI history underwent dual-task assessments …
