The Prevalence Of Anti-Feminist Content On Tiktok And Youtube Shorts, Naomi Jones May 2024

The Prevalence Of Anti-Feminist Content On Tiktok And Youtube Shorts, Naomi Jones

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In today's digital landscape, online platforms serve as hubs of political discourse, akin to modern-day town halls. Among these platforms, TikTok has surged in popularity, emerging as a significant arena for ideological exchange. However, it has also become a breeding ground for anti-feminist rhetoric, a trend not exclusive to TikTok but also observable across competitors like YouTube Shorts. A content analysis conducted on the initial 100 videos suggested by both TikTok and YouTube Shorts for a new account revealed several noteworthy insights. Within this sample, it was found that 5% of TikTok videos contained anti-feminist themes, while only 3% of …

State Antitrust Enforcement: Politics Or Economics?, Nickolas Remish May 2024

State Antitrust Enforcement: Politics Or Economics?, Nickolas Remish

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Antitrust enforcement on the federal level has clear partisan influences; Democrats usually support expansive enforcement regimes while Republicans oppose them. On the state level, the ideological divide appears muddled. State attorneys general, who are mostly elected officials, are responsible for initiating lawsuits. This study seeks to determine whether state attorneys general mirror their federal counterpart in enforcing antitrust law on a partisan basis or whether unique state variables such as economic factors overwhelm ideological motivations. Public choice theory dictates politicians prioritize re-election and will adhere to constituent interest, thus providing the theoretical foundation for why politicians may tailor antitrust enforcement …

The Effects Of Burnout And Secondary Trauma On Parole Officers Working With Elderly Inmates, Kiley Leeann West

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of working with aging inmates on parole officers. Overall, previous research has shown those who work with parolees experience secondary trauma and burnout due to long contact hours, and lack of job training and resources. Research, however, has been limited on parole officers who work with the elderly offender population. Arguably, older inmates face unique obstacles that are in addition to the general offender population such as chronic health conditions, physical disabilities, and lack of family support. As the number of elderly parolees continues to increase, parole officers who work …

Community As A Force Of Action In Lorraine Hansberry's "Les Blancs", Lily Jensen May 2024

Community As A Force Of Action In Lorraine Hansberry's "Les Blancs", Lily Jensen

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

This paper explores Hansberry’s philosophy of community in her 1970 play, Les Blancs. The paper analyzes Hansberry’s use of complex characterization in this text to show the wide reach of the colonial power structure and to show what is required of a community to push for effective action. The paper also analyzes the National Theatre’s 2016 production of Les Blancs, and how this production incorporates and enhances Hansberry’s philosophy of community through the characteristics afforded through theatre as a medium.

“Our Experience Is Fragmentary”: Partial Redemption In Marilynne Robinson’S Gilead Tetralogy, Zachary Stevenson May 2024

“Our Experience Is Fragmentary”: Partial Redemption In Marilynne Robinson’S Gilead Tetralogy, Zachary Stevenson

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

Although the characters and thematic throughlines vary across the four books in the Gilead series, each book takes an interest in the reality of division and considers ways of negotiating and healing that division. Whether the divisions are theological, familial, socioeconomic or racial, their presence haunts the text and the question of their resolution always hovers near the surface. Taken together, these considerations of difference across the four books demonstrate that Robinson populates her novels with chasms that her characters bridge, but only partially so. This coexistence of alienation and reconciliation allows Robinson to articulate a vision of Christian community …

Dnp Final Report: Double Gloving As Part Of The Surgical Site Infection Prevention Bundle For Colorectal Surgeries, Dave P. Calubaquib

DNP Final Reports

Surgical site infection (SSI) is the costliest healthcare-acquired infection that encompasses around three to ten billion dollars annually. The costs do not include the societal challenges and personal losses that patients endure when they have SSI. The evidence-based project revolves around decreasing SSI among colorectal surgical patients with a PICOT question: In patients having colorectal surgery, how does an educational project regarding double gloving for reducing SSIs, compared to no educational project, improve compliance rates for double gloving? The evidence recommends that double-gloving techniques among surgical members (surgeon, surgical assistant, and scrub techs/nurses) during surgery prevent SSI. The project utilized …

The Humanities And Interdisciplinarity: Borderless Sympathy And Global Citizenship, Lianne Gabrielle Sauvage

Honors Thesis

In an era marked by capitalism, rapid globalization, and technological advancement, the humanities, and interdisciplinary studies have been pushed aside for the sake of profitability. Drawing on insights from scholars like Martha Nussbaum and Stuart Hall, this paper explores the crucial role of a humanities-based and interdisciplinary education in fostering skills and sensibilities necessary in navigating the increasingly interconnected world. Through an examination of various interdisciplinary courses at Loyola Marymount University, this paper demonstrates the nuanced ways in which the humanities enrich our understanding of human experience, cultural diversity, and sociopolitical dynamics, ultimately developing a borderless sympathy that is necessary …

An Alternate Proof For The Top-Heavy Conjecture On Partition Lattices Using Shellability, Brian Macdonald, Josh Hallam May 2024

An Alternate Proof For The Top-Heavy Conjecture On Partition Lattices Using Shellability, Brian Macdonald, Josh Hallam

Honors Thesis

A partially ordered set, or poset, is governed by an ordering that may or may not relate any pair of objects in the set. Both the bonds of a graph and the partitions of a set are partially ordered, and their poset structure can be depicted visually in a Hasse diagram. The partitions of {1, 2, ..., n} form a particularly important poset known as the partition lattice Πn. It is isomorphic to the bond lattice of the complete graph Kn, making it a special case of the family of bond lattices. Dowling and Wilson’s 1975 Top-Heavy Conjecture states that …

The Oncology Etf: How Retail Traders Can Utilize Custom Growth Etf’S, Samuel Sprute May 2024

The Oncology Etf: How Retail Traders Can Utilize Custom Growth Etf’S, Samuel Sprute

Honors Thesis

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are potent investment vehicles to generate returns from systematic gains in any market. However, they have historically been products created and distributed by large financial institutions. Due to various drawbacks of institutionally available ETFs, many retail traders have begun to create their own custom ETFs. These custom ETFs operate as mini-portfolios and have significant potential to generate alpha, or positive risk-adjusted return, when positioned specifically in growth markets.

In this work I aim to show the potential for custom ETFs in retail trading. In achieving this goal, I have broken this work into two sections. The …

Shear-thinning hydrogels are a class of materials with unique rheological properties that enable them to undergo a reversible reduction in viscosity under shear stress, which allows for easy injection. The injectability of shear-thinning hydrogels is particularly important when considering their use in biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing. However, before advancing to these applications, it is crucial to evaluate the “injectability” of new shear-thinning hydrogels to avoid clogging of the needle for injection. Injectability is typically associated with determining suitable viscosity, storage/loss moduli, and other factors, such as injection force (e.g., needle length and gauge …

Dual Modes Of Dopamine Underly Distinct Facets Of Impulsive Actions, Tzvia Pinkhasov May 2024

Dual Modes Of Dopamine Underly Distinct Facets Of Impulsive Actions, Tzvia Pinkhasov

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

During the pursuit of basic needs, animals sometimes fail to suppress actions that are maladaptive and counterproductive to their survival. In humans, these actions are often called impulsive because they can incur negative consequences. Impulsivity is ubiquitous across psychiatric disorders and related to debilitating outcomes such as substance abuse, crime and suicidality. Despite its risks, a lack of a neural mechanism understanding of impulsive actions impedes the development of effective treatments. In this dissertation, I set out to bridge the knowledge gained from the parallel fields of neuropsychopharmacology, experimental psychology, and systems neuroscience to uncover neural mechanisms of impulsive actions. Clinicians …

Neuroepigenetic Mechanisms Of Brain Development: From Technology To Biological Insights, Allen Yen May 2024

Neuroepigenetic Mechanisms Of Brain Development: From Technology To Biological Insights, Allen Yen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Each cell in the brain has the same genomic sequence, yet they can have vastly different phenotypes and function. This diversity is a result of complex genetic and signaling pathways, and knowing how these are regulated is key to understanding physiological development and how pathogenic dysfunctions arise. Genomic methods such as chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing (ATAC-seq) have played pivotal roles in dissecting these processes. However, a key limitation is that the cells are destroyed upon observation of their molecular states, which preclude our ability to correlate historical epigenetic information with future …

Lost In The Times Of Yesterday And Other Stories, Anes Ahmed May 2024

Lost In The Times Of Yesterday And Other Stories, Anes Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

Lost in the Times of Yesterday is an ongoing collection of fiction that features short stories who, while varying differently from one another, are all intertwined by the themes of immigration, post-colonialism, and Arabic and Arab-American identity, aiming to capture the diverse orchestra of Egyptian and Egyptian-American voices through the lens of magical realism. Some examples: the grief of a village girl and her attempt to understand her father’s ghost; an Egyptian-American actor whose slow physical disappearance leads to an examination of identity within contemporary performance; and the life of boy born with chestnut wings in a Brooklyn apartment.
