Ethnic Identity Development And South Asian Stereotypes In 'Never Have I Ever', Priya Dutta, Allison Noyes May 2024

Ethnic Identity Development And South Asian Stereotypes In 'Never Have I Ever', Priya Dutta, Allison Noyes

Honors Thesis

Intersectional media serves as poignant representations of marginalized communities, and as few positive models exist, researchers must explore the efficacy and impacts of celebrated works on consumers’ perspectives.

“Ethnic identity is less a process of ‘being’ and more a process of ‘becoming…’ The factors that form an ethnic identity allow its members to establish their distinguishing features from other groups, creating a sense of solidarity, belonging, and connection within their own definable cultural group through customs and celebrations, like festivals and religious gatherings, as well as through particular cultural artifacts, like a style of dress” (Stuart Hall, 1996). I will …

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

One of the pillars of good governance is the rule of law and administration of Justice. The main plank of market economy is property rights and enforcement of contracts. Among several determinants of Foreign Direct Investment and International Trade flows the mechanisms by which disputes are resolved among the contracting parties features prominently. Inclusive development in which the majority of the population shares the benefits also requires Financial inclusion i.e access to capital. I would like to begin with Article 37 (d) of the constitution i.e provide inexpensive and expeditious justice. This in turn implies Affordability and Access. The world …

Like Shapes Moving In Another World: An Identification And Interpretation Of Mythical Figures In C. S. Lewis’ Novel The Silver Chair, Benjamin S. Perkin May 2024

Like Shapes Moving In Another World: An Identification And Interpretation Of Mythical Figures In C. S. Lewis’ Novel The Silver Chair, Benjamin S. Perkin

Student Research

As a result of his conversion to Christianity, author C. S. Lewis felt compelled to formulate a unique definition of myth. From his perspective, myth is a means through which God communicates His truth to the non-Christian world. Myth recognizes the yearning for home all people experience yet cannot satisfy, but while it correctly diagnoses humanity’s symptoms, myth fails to treat the underlying disease responsible for them. The influence of non-Christian, specifically Greek, myth can be felt most strongly in The Silver Chair, the sixth installment of Lewis’ series The Chronicles of Narnia. Through the allusions this essay explores, in …

Double Trouble Unmasked: Femoral Pseudoaneurysm And Deep Venous Thromboses Following Coronary Angiography, Mariam Jamil, Antoine Egbe, Khurram Arshad, Yazan Alamro, Essa Kadiri May 2024

Double Trouble Unmasked: Femoral Pseudoaneurysm And Deep Venous Thromboses Following Coronary Angiography, Mariam Jamil, Antoine Egbe, Khurram Arshad, Yazan Alamro, Essa Kadiri

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms, while infrequent, represent a formidable complication of interventional cardiac catheterization, particularly in cases involving femoral artery access. This report details a unique case involving a 73-year-old male, receiving warfarin for a mechanical aortic valve, who developed a substantial right groin hematoma attributed to an iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm post-cardiac catheterization, subsequently resulting in concomitant deep venous thromboses (DVTs) in the right leg. The pathophysiology of DVTs following left heart catheterization typically involves the formation of a sizable pseudoaneurysm, exerting pressure on adjacent veins, leading to blood pooling and subsequent clot formation. Alternatively, the development of large hematomas in the thigh …

Effect Of Iv Iron-Carbohydrate Supplement On Morbidity And Mortality In Patients With Heart Failure, Yousef Alsmairat, Malitha Hettiarachchi

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Objectives: To study the effect of intravenous iron on morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. The current European Society of Cardiology's 2021 heart failure guidelines recommend the consideration of Ferric Carboxymaltose in symptomatic patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction < 45%. Methods and results: We conducted a systematic review using articles published in PubMed and EMBASE databases. The number of records first identified was 263. The study only reviewed Randomized Clinical Trails (RCTs) published in the years 2013-2023 and removed all the duplicates and irrelevant articles using Rayyan.ai tool. The final number of qualified articles that met the study's inclusion criteria was 3, with a total of 2,279 participants. The inclusion criteria for the study included: Age > 18, and heart failure (HF) with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50%. The study showed that intravenous iron supplementation in patients with heart failure and iron deficiency has been proven to reduce the symptoms of heart failure, improve quality of life, increase exercise capacity and skeletal muscle strength. IV iron-carbohydrate therapy significantly reduced hospitalization for worsening heart failure, but did not significantly impact all-cause mortality, compared to control. Conclusion: IV iron-carbohydrate therapy significantly reduced hospitalization for worsening heart failure, but did not significantly impact all-cause mortality, compared to control. Based on the study review, we recommend IV iron therapy for patients with systolic dysfunction heart failure associated with iron deficiency anemia.

Feminism And Female Identity In Adaptations Of Pride And Prejudice Throughout The 20th And 21st Centuries, Emily Suh, Emily Suh May 2024

Feminism And Female Identity In Adaptations Of Pride And Prejudice Throughout The 20th And 21st Centuries, Emily Suh, Emily Suh

Honors Theses

To many of her fans in the world, Austen is undeniably a feminist author, especially for her time in the nineteenth century. In a time where women were dependent upon male family members for their livelihoods, most of Austen’s heroines exhibit a sort of independence and strong will with a mind of their own, including in Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is the model for what an independent woman is, a woman who is not so concerned with the monetary value of matrimony and only falls in love because she wants to. Furthermore, female audiences tend to like Elizabeth more than …

Theological Songwriting, Jake William Dimas May 2024

Theological Songwriting, Jake William Dimas

Senior Honors Theses

Music affects people deeply. Because of this, Christian songwriters have a responsibility to write songs that are theologically accurate. To provide a comparison to the experiment that took place for this paper, Chris Tomlin’s biography, songwriting influences, and music are presented and discussed. The experiment began with exclusively Christian songwriters being given an initial questionnaire. A song prompt was then given to each songwriter, and once returned, the songwriter was given a questionnaire. This step took place once again for the other prompt. The songs produced by the songwriters were then analyzed, being compared with one another and with the …

Photodynamic Treatment Of Staphylococcus Aureus With Non-Iron Hemin Analogs In The Presence Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Badhu Prashanthika Sivasubramaniam, Benjamin M. Washer, Yuichiro Watanabe, Kathryn E. Ragheb, J. Paul Robinson, Alexander Wei

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

Bacteria subjected to antiseptic or antibiotic stress often develop tolerance, a trait that can lead to permanent resistance. To determine whether photodynamic agents could be used to counter tolerance, we evaluated three non-iron hemin analogs (M-PpIX; M = Al, Ga, In) as targeted photosensitizers for antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) following exposure to sublethal H2O2. Al-PpIX is an active producer of ROS whereas Ga- and In-PpIX are more efficient at generating singlet oxygen. Al- and Ga-PpIX are highly potent aPDI agents against S. aureus and methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) with antimicrobial activity (3 log reduction in colony-forming units) at nanomolar concentrations. The …
