Public Elementary School Counselors’ Experiences Serving Military-Connected Students With Active-Duty Parents, Tiffany Archer Taylor May 2024

Public Elementary School Counselors’ Experiences Serving Military-Connected Students With Active-Duty Parents, Tiffany Archer Taylor

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most military-connected students (MCS) with active-duty parents attend public schools in the United States. Due to the highly mobile military lifestyles of MCS, some are at risk for academic, emotional, and social challenges. School counselors are often charged with supporting and advocating for MCS; therefore, it is vital to understand elementary school counselors’ experiences with these students. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of elementary school counselors who work with MCS with active-duty parents in U.S. public-schools. Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach served as a theoretical framework for this study. Semistructured interviews were …

Nsaids Role In Triggering Ibd Exacerbations; Reality Or Misunderstanding? A Systematic Review, Alec Swartz, Malitha Hettiarachchi May 2024

Nsaids Role In Triggering Ibd Exacerbations; Reality Or Misunderstanding? A Systematic Review, Alec Swartz, Malitha Hettiarachchi

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: Initial studies seemed to show that NSAID use was associated with increased risk of IBD exacerbation. Supported by known role of COX-1/2 isoenzymes (specifically their prostaglandin [PG] products) in maintaining GI mucosal barrier and mediating inflammation Combination of early research findings and COX prostaglandin knowledge resulted in NSAID avoidance in IBD patients. Recent data seemingly contradicts prior research, and NSAID use is predicted to not play a role in IBD exacerbation Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature using PubMed and American Journal of Gastroenterology. Of the thousands of results, we narrowed our results to 4 recent …

Reno-Sparks Indian Colony V. Haaland, William N. Rose May 2024

Reno-Sparks Indian Colony V. Haaland, William N. Rose

Public Land & Resources Law Review

Reno-Sparks Indian Colony v. Haaland added clarity to the scope of a federal agency’s duty to consult with Tribes under the National Historic Preservation Act. The case was the culmination of unsuccessful litigation efforts by Tribes to stop a large mining project, and it demonstrated the high hurdle Tribes face when challenging whether a federal agency has engaged in reasonable and good faith consultation.

Solar Energy Industries Association V. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Brandy Keesee May 2024

Solar Energy Industries Association V. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Brandy Keesee

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In Solar Energy Industries Association v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“Solar Energy”), the court grappled with a complex web of regulatory and environmental considerations. The overall dispute was the promulgation and implementation of Order 872, a directive issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC” or “Commission”), and its alignment with the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (“PURPA”) and the Administrative Procedure Act (“APA”). The dispute in Solar Energy is about FERC’s interpretation and application of PURPA in managing qualifying facilities (“QFs”). The crux of the contention was whether FERC’s 2020 rule revisions set forth in Order 872 …

Effects Of Leaf Species And Conditioning State Of Fresh Leaves On Colonization By Stream And Pond Macroinvertebrates, Austin R. Hoffman, Erika V. Iyengar May 2024

Effects Of Leaf Species And Conditioning State Of Fresh Leaves On Colonization By Stream And Pond Macroinvertebrates, Austin R. Hoffman, Erika V. Iyengar

Pacific Faculty Work

Fresh, green leaves are increasing as resources in aquatic ecosystems due to more frequent severe spring and summer storms, but research on allochthonous resources typically uses senescent leaves. We examined macroinvertebrate colonization of green leaves of three native deciduous trees (red maple, red oak, and tulip poplar) over two weeks within both a stream and fishless pond. Leaf colonization varied depending on the taxa of leaves and colonizers, submersion time, and the ecosystem examined. Within the stream, the densities of isopods (Lirceus sp.) and snails (mostly the invasive Potamopyrgus antipodarum) did not vary significantly across leaf species. In contrast, mayflies …

Parental Knowledge Of Signs, Symptoms, And Risk Factors Associated With Sudden Cardiac Arrest In Adolescent Athletes, Lisa A. Lattera-Hughes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Exercise is associated with unmasking underlying cardiac disorders and increasing an athlete’s risk for experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) event during sports. Parental knowledge is an important component of health education in relation to the future of their child’s health. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to assess the relationship between parental knowledge about warning signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with SCA in adolescent athletes and parental willingness to participate in an educational intervention to learn about SCA. The theoretical framework was based on Nutbeam’s conceptual model of health literacy. Eightyone parents whose adolescent children participated …

Toxicological Impacts Of River Chemical Spills In Affected West Virginia Counties, Janice Lorraine Taylor Peters May 2024

Toxicological Impacts Of River Chemical Spills In Affected West Virginia Counties, Janice Lorraine Taylor Peters

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Factors such as geographical location/proximity and exposure to external environmental events, as well as poor regulatory processes, are known to increase the risk for cancers among affected populations. There is still a gap in the literature related to the incidence of cancers in specific regions with heavy industrialization and environmental health hazards. In West Virginia, chemical contamination events have occurred in or near water systems. The goal of this quantitative, retrospective study was to discover whether there were any differences in the incidence of disease or adverse health effects and cancers due to chemical contamination in four counties (Kanawha, Mingo, …

Boolean Group Structure In Class Groups Of Positive Definite Quadratic Forms Of Primitive Discriminant, Christopher Albert Hudert Jr. May 2024

Boolean Group Structure In Class Groups Of Positive Definite Quadratic Forms Of Primitive Discriminant, Christopher Albert Hudert Jr.

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

It is possible to completely describe the representation of any integer by binary quadratic forms of a given discriminant when the discriminant’s class group is a Boolean group (also known as an elementary abelian 2-group). For other discriminants, we can partially describe the representation using the structure of the class group. The goal of the present project is to find whether any class group with 32 elements and a primitive positive definite discriminant is a Boolean group. We find that no such class group is Boolean.

Perceived Normality Of Ipv And Ptsd Symptoms As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Ipv-Related Injury And Perceptions Of Responsibility For Ipv, Noel Shenk May 2024

Perceived Normality Of Ipv And Ptsd Symptoms As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Ipv-Related Injury And Perceptions Of Responsibility For Ipv, Noel Shenk

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) who have experienced injury may have numerous lingering effects of the violence, even long after the abusive romantic relationship has ended. However, despite understanding some of these lingering effects, it is unclear how the impact of perceived normality of IPV and PTSD symptoms affect survivors’ perceptions of responsibility for the violence. The present study aimed to examine these variables (perceived normality and PTSD symptoms) as moderators of the link between IPV-related injury and perceptions of the extent to which an individual provokes their own experience of abuse. To this end, participants (n = …

Minimally Invasive Tissue Extraction: Continued Growth Through Simulation For Obgyn Residents, Angela Frankel, Md, Mph, Melanie Hotz, Md, Patrick Teefey, Md

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Posters

Background

  • Minimally invasive surgery often requires tissue morcellation for extraction of large surgical specimens.1
  • Surgeon comfort with tissue morcellation in gynecologic surgery is vital in providing a minimally invasive (MIS) approach.
  • However, OBGYN residents often feel underprepared to perform this skill independently.2
  • While practicing tissue morcellation in the OR is ideal, simulation has been shown to improve resident technical skill without risking increased operative time or associated morbidity.3
  • This intervention seeks to build upon a prior simulation exercise, with the ultimate goal of improving OB-GYN resident self-reported comfort with minimally invasive tissue extraction.

Faculty Research 2024

Immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor T cells for pediatric solid and brain tumors is constrained by available targetable antigens. Cancer-specific exons present a promising reservoir of targets; however, these have not been explored and validated systematically in a pan-cancer fashion. To identify cancer specific exon targets, here we analyze 1532 RNA-seq datasets from 16 types of pediatric solid and brain tumors for comparison with normal tissues using a newly developed workflow. We find 2933 exons in 157 genes encoding proteins of the surfaceome or matrisome with high cancer specificity either at the gene (n = 148) or the alternatively spliced …

Cultivating Hope: The Influence Of Positive Outlooks In K-12 Climate Change Education, Agnes Brown May 2024

Cultivating Hope: The Influence Of Positive Outlooks In K-12 Climate Change Education, Agnes Brown

Student Theses 2015-Present

Abstract

Students studying the environment know and feel the emotional toll that it can take. This can easily contribute to mental health issues and utter defeat. This paper addresses the exclusion of optimism from environmental education and the impacts this has on childhood development and students as they advance to higher levels of education. Through this analysis, the goal is to find a role for hope in a topic typically framed in an apocalyptic manner. The shift from denying the existence of climate change to denying that it can be addressed, particularly through the usage of “doomsday language,” has created …

Analysis Of Bayesian Transfer Function Fitting Method - A Potential Tool For Estimating Interferometer Uncertainty, Caden Swain May 2024

Analysis Of Bayesian Transfer Function Fitting Method - A Potential Tool For Estimating Interferometer Uncertainty, Caden Swain

Honors Thesis

The Response Function of the LIGO Interferometer is central to reconstructing the strain produced by incoming gravitational waves. As a function of the interferometer's response to external stimuli, the Response Function is both analytically modeled and experimentally measured using excitations from the photon calibrator system at discrete frequencies. The uncertainty in each data point is propagated to the residual between the model and measurements, with both the uncertainty and residual being interpolated over a broadband frequency range. This project explores an alternative method to estimating the uncertainty and systematic error present in the Response function model through the utilization of …

Assessing The Effects Of Cold Storage Regimes Of North American Bombus Gynes, Thuy Tien T. Lindsay, Marcia M. Hagen, Joyce N. Knoblett, Joseph P. Rinehart, Karen M. Kapheim, James P. Strange

Biology Faculty Publications

Bumble bees are the primary commercial pollinators for greenhouse-grown crops and managing them requires insight into the Bombus life cycle. However, some aspects of the life cycle are not fully understood. Once mated, adult Bombus gynes can be stored for a short term at a constant low temperature (CLT). However, survival rates for some species are low during CLT, particularly when storage periods exceed a month. To address this, we tested the hypothesis that Bombus gynes stored in a fluctuating thermal regime (FTR) have increased survival compared to gynes stored in CLT. Specifically, the FTR had a baseline temperature of …

Clattergag, Jamie Myres May 2024

Clattergag, Jamie Myres

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Clattergag is an immersive, interactive installation that breaks the white-wall gallery confines to explore childhood nostalgia and whimsy. Fun is the goal. Playing dress up with half a mannequin, or laying in a giant burger are activities you wouldn't usually find in a stuffy gallery. As the viewer interacts with each piece, I want them to sit with their nostalgia and wonder why it is that kids pretend to be adults.

Nostalgia and adulthood are so intermingled, yet the mere presence of one means an absence of the other. Children yearn to be adults, yet it's taboo for an adult …

Faculty Research 2024

The unique virus-cell interaction in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated malignancies implies targeting the viral latent-lytic switch is a promising therapeutic strategy. However, the lack of specific and efficient therapeutic agents to induce lytic cycle in these cancers is a major challenge facing clinical implementation. We develop a synthetic transcriptional activator that specifically activates endogenous BZLF1 and efficiently induces lytic reactivation in EBV-positive cancer cells. A lipid nanoparticle encapsulating nucleoside-modified mRNA which encodes a BZLF1-specific transcriptional activator (mTZ3-LNP) is synthesized for EBV-targeted therapy. Compared with conventional chemical inducers, mTZ3-LNP more efficiently activates EBV lytic gene expression in EBV-associated epithelial cancers. Here we …
